But that excitement quote isn't quite as funny as...

I didn't want to leave you folks with a cliffhanger before I leave for a week, but I also wanted to give you plenty of reasons to want the story to resume!

Well, we are into the week off. And while we'll be getting some teaser art, it probably will not be too terrible. Namely, because Mookie is the writer of this joint venture, and I doubt we'll get his terrible contributions in a preview.

So that said, while we wait for more garbage, I'd encourage you all to check out things that are actually decent.

In all these, the art ranges from good to gorgeous, and the plot is well written. (Though I'd criticize Derelict's abuse of time skips/flashbacks/flash forwards in the beginning that made it hard to get what's going on exactly.)

Oh, we're doing this?

Rice-Boy: Non-traditional fantasy comics. Quick reads. Two finished series and one ongoing, set in the same world. Publication order: Rice Boy - Order of Tales - Vattu. I've yet to see anyone who didn't like Rice Boy. The art gets really good.
Gunnerkrigg Court: Surprised this hasn't been mentioned, maybe because most people already know it. I like it but most people seem to be more into it than me. Check the latest page to see how good the art is.
Bad Machinery: John Allison's successor to Scary Go Round. Teens in a town in England, with a supernatural element (better than it sounds.) It's pretty good I guess.
Oyvind Thorsby's work: The art is pretty bad but you get used to it eventually and the writer's humour/imagination more than make up for it. Hitmen for Destiny (his first work) is probably the most imaginative comic I've read and really fun to read.
Tails gets Trolled: Elmer Fudd is a necromancer. Motion comic

What if the comic is about the maturation of the Beast? He started out as a baby (not a Lovecraftian monster) incapable of speech and kept trying to eat things that weren't good for him, like fear or magic or seers. He was also teething and fond of hugging.

Then he learned how to speak and became a toddler, explaining his petulant behaviour and why he ran away from a crab mask. He was still at that stage where peekaboo-I-see-you would terrify him. He got out of hand for a while and played "stop hitting yourself" with a squid, but he's ok now.

King Dave is the Beast's adopted father, who clearly loves his son. That photo of him hugging the Beast is such a heartwarming example of father-child bonding, almost as good as Siegfried's gift to Warlord Moustache. TIM is the Beast's other dad and the Battlecasters are his action figures.

I can't wait for the Beast to become a man. King Dave will be so proud.

But the comic is alas about God. I mean, what's-his-facebath. Dominic. It's about Dominic.
(And as a very revealing lapsus, I almost wrote "Mookie" instead of "Dominic".)

What if the comic is about the maturation of the Beast?

That would be nice. It could be about how a being of incredible power, born out of a magical nexus or whatever the Elemecca actually is would gain and develop a mind of its own, one that is somewhat alien and often destructive, but not really malicious. And about how its existence and actions could alter the very nature of magic forever.

The king would represent those that embrace this, and try to work with it, see how there can not only be coexistence but also benefit for both this strange being and the world it entered.

The Deegans would instead see not the possibilities the changes to magic could bring, but the massive destruction the Beast is liable to cause.

Of course, there would be the moral dilemma of them opposing something with the mind of a child - not innocent per se, but not really capable of being truly responsible for its actions either - and how to best deal with this.
While the king, on the other hand, would bond with this Beast much like a father and attempt to teach it as best as he can, not only about the magic that he has studied all his life but also about, well, humanity. But he would still, at times, sometimes not even admitting it to himself, want and attempt to use its vast powers for his world, his species, his kingdom, and ultimately himself.



I mainly want to see this because there are only very, very few authors that could conceivably make this not an absolute trainwreck, especially when presented in webcomic form, and Mookie is certainly not one of them.

But even if he would just suddenly become amazingly talented over night, Dominic Deegan would still be a horribly inappropriate comic for such an arc.

It would be a wondrous string of hilarious failures much like the DD arcs of times long past.


Instead, we get...what we get. It's really so dull at times I have no words for it.

We're going to have a week of pictures without any attempt to put them together in a form of a story, and all the characters will probably wear strange clothing and pose shooting lasers and beam spams.

Unlike any other week of DD, this time it will be intentional, so I guess the teaser art week won't be that bad.

This week, I was idling sketching this young wizard character I've been toying around for a story idea, when it struck me that this guy only uses cold/ice magic (except maybe for wind/storm stuff later), and he has a scar over one eye. I never made the connection.

Well, you can let him keep the scar. Just make sure when you use him that he actually has a hindrance out of seeing from that eye. Doesn't have to be completely blind either. But if he has some noticeable effect from the scar, you're miles better than Nimmel.

The reasoning behind the scar was more of a psychological symbolic mark as a branding of a personal failure that cannot be hidden. Which makes it almost exactly like how Nimmel's scar should be since he got his betraying Miranda and the sacrifices of his classmates, except the comic's bizarre Mookinsert logic somehow turned that in a badge of pride.

I'll probably remove the wind/storm stuff too because it's far more interesting to have the characters be highly specialised. One of the things that bugs me the most about DD is how no-one is ever creative with their ability set. If Luna was only an illusionist she still has an amazing magical ability that could affect any creature with sight but has no ability on anything else - which is great for setting up story problems and character. But this is DD, so Luna can invent new spells at a whim and then sits around being useless 99% of the time.

Now I'm even more curious as what will be the main character in Mookie and Garth's superhero sci-fi comic.

I'm betting on it being Mookie's Mass Effect character, myself. His assistant/love interest will be a geeky superheroine with an unfortunate disease/mutation/curse that means she has to wear a full-body suit at all times (skintight, naturally) although there will be cleavage and room to show skin so we can see how much of a strong character she is. We will be informed by the Mookie how great she is, and she will begin to form a healthy codependent relationship with the Mookie, as he was the only person not to shun her.

Her superpower will be the ability to resurrect herself from the dead, but the power is located in her ass.

I am excited. well, usually I dislike filler or concept art weeks since they put the plot on hold and I'd like to know what happens next. But since they plot has been dead for three years and put in quicklime in the attic to cash in social security this isn't a problem.
