"Not precisely, though that is part of it in some ways. They function as memory triggers, so that the mistake is not made again."

She pauses for a moment, considering how best to explain it to Nycca.

"You have never had to rely on such methods because most of the time, there isn't terribly much riding on your errors, but we come from a very harsh world, where even small mistakes can lead to one's death, or the deaths of those depending on them, so we have to use proportionately harsher measures to correct ourselves when we do make an error."
