Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Elan for his optimism.
Gannji for his attitude.
Enor for his chart.
Zz'dtri for his laconism. Also for inspiring me to learn a new word.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Elan, partly because Eyepatched Resistance Leader barely has had time to be a character and certainly not enough of one to challenge the protagonists, but mainly because he is a true wonder: dumb as a rock and yet entirely likable and sympathetic, and not just because we're laughing at his stupidity.
Gannji. Qarr is just an annoying little imp who gets swept up in happenings he doesn't understand. Gannji is a real character; someone called him George to Enor's Lennie and that's pretty much exactly it. He may be in a questionable vocation, but he is not a jerk.
Enor. Samantha's Dad wasn't a very interesting character to start with and while Enor's "gentle giant" shtick may not be very original, I still like the big lug.
Haerta Bloodsoak. While Zz'dtri is certainly more important there is a limit as to how interesting a barely-speaking character can be.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Sorry about the 2 different posts on the last vote, i only remember posting one of them, but i was opening, closing and reopening tabs all the time and i do remember changing my vote, but not before posting. It doesn't matter if you took my vote for Niu or Horace anyway, but i will be more carefull in the future, so i will put explanations next to my votes.
Elan-he's a very amusing and endearing character in his own right, but even moreso compared to the stereotypical bickering resistance leaders.
Gannji-the fiends are cool and all, but he quoted Star Wars.
Enor-the forest bandit family are just unpleasant people
Zz'dtri-the chaotic good rebel yearning to throw off the reputation of his evil kin tickles my fancy a bit more than Haerta

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Eye-patched Resistance Leader. Seriously? What is the point of pitting one of the main protagonists against a character so minor he doesn't even have a name. That's just... mean! I have to assume Elan would have no part of such an unsporting competition and therefore refuse to hurt his feelings by forcing him too.
IFCC Some bottom-feeding bounty hunter living off other people's misery, or a trio of people attempting to unite all the Planes Below and turn the whole world on its head. There are some people who are the movers and the shakers, and there are others that are just dino-chow
Pa Enor was just a big dumb lug that did what someone else told him too. He had no real personality or even characterization. Pa had both, though they are both quite the minor players
Zz'dtri Haertia isn't even a character, she's a tool. She was in place for one thing and has no past and no future... I'm not even sure she counts as a character.Official Incense Aroma Specialist for the Vaarsuvius Fan Club!

Zz'dtri - although before his recent return, I would have voted for Haerta. Z became a much more interesting character with his recent spell-preparation-matchup rivarly with V.You can call me Draz.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Elan. I mean, a minor character can't really compete with a protagonist.
IFCC. They are snarky, intelligent, and probably more important to the plot than Gannji.
Bandit Dad. This was hard, but he is just funnier than Gannji. Maybe it's the fact that there are already a bunch of stupid, childish characters: Elan, the Monster in the Darkness, and Thog. I guess by the time Enor arrived, it was just more of the same.
Z'zdtri. Haerta just wasn't an interesting character in my opinion. She just seemed like a shallow necromancer stereotype.Last edited by pwning doodes; 2013-01-25 at 03:57 PM.

Qarr serves the IFCC. He is not an actual member, any more than Sabine (...or Nale...or Vaarsuvius...) is. He's also had matches of his own. The IFCC is Lee, Nero, and Cedrik.

Hmmmm, should I go for a tiebreaker if there's a tie (which, spoiler alert, is looking very possible right now), or just let both characters through to the next round? Decisions, decisions...

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
I'd advocate advancing both, and having them face other people - as in, assign Gannji and IFCC the values E and F, respectively.
A fights B, C fights D, E fights F, G fights H, and I fights J.
A, D, E, F, G, and J advance.
Instead of A fighting D, E fighting F, and G fighting J, which would simply be a rehash of Gannji and the IFCC, you could pit E against D, F against G, and A against J. This would ensure there would not be another tie, and should still maintain the even numbers of the tournament and nobody would get a bye. It would also be with minimal selective-interfering (E and F would simply fight the combatants opposite them, so there would be no accusations of cherry-picking who they went up against to stack the deck in any way) The 3-way free-for-all Kish mentioned could also work, with less potentially less confusion (and definitely less work on your part), but could also have the potential to split the vote between the IFCC and Gannji and have a third character reap the benefits of an undivided fanbase (not that I have any realistic expectation of this happening, but it is a possibility) . Keep in mind I'm not up to figuring out your entire spreadsheet right now so I don't know how this would affect the pyramid.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Patience young padawan, some of us have lives. And others pretend to have lives in between updating inane threads like this one. Oh, and I support and endorse any attempt to make another question-per-strip thread.
Spoiler2: Elan - 34 - 91.89%
VS
Eyepatched Resistance Leader - 3 - 8.11%
*cough* foregoneconclusion *cough*
IFCC - 19 - 51.35%
VS
Gannji - 18 - 48.65%
Awww, poor Gannji. Stupid big bads with their stupid big baddedness. Fortunately however, I don't need to try and understand Peelee's (thoughtfully formatted) complex sea of letters.
Enor - 27 - 75.00%
VS
Samantha's Dad - 9 - 25.00
Another resounding loss for the old school characters. I quite liked Samantha's Dad.
Haerta Bloodsoak - 6 - 16.22%
VS
23: Zz'dtri - 31 - 83.78%
Haerta was a plot device. An important plot device, but still a plot device.
Hinjo: "OK. But if I get killed before Xykon's army attacks, the city will have no leader and thousands will likely die in the confusion. So, you know, it's your call, Roy."
Roy: *sigh* "Fine, I'll do it. But that was low for a paladin."
Hinjo: "You're obviously not familiar with one of our key class abilities: Summon Conscience."
11: Hinjo
VS
Hieronymus Grubwiggler
"It's alive! ALIVE!!!"
"It appears... not everyone agrees with your... analysis."
Shojo
VS
Old Blind Pete
"Let me put it this way; I used to be known as 'Eagle-Eyed Pete' before Bozzok caught me selling guild secrets to his rivals. A word of advice: If you're going to do business with criminals, don't pick a nickname based on any body part you can't afford to lose. *sigh* I shoulda listened to Appendix Steve when he tried to warn me."
Greysky Priest: "I guess you have all the angles worked out then. You're a real smart guy, huh?"
Old Blind Pete: "Heh heh, you bet. Now help me get this sword out-"
Greysky Priest: "Maybe we ought to start calling you... *raises mace threateningly* 'Brainy Pete'."
Greysky Priest
VS
Ancient Black Dragon
"I left my son - my only child - alone to guard our home for a few months while I visited his uncle. He was old enough to be by himself, and I thought he might appreciate the responsibility. I told him not to have any wild parties while I was gone, but I expected that he would have some friends over. Perhaps that nice green girl from the next woods over. I try to be open-minded, you know. When I returned, do you know what I found?... NOTHING!"
"Crush the world beneath your heel."
Ganonron
VS
14: Blackwing
"Hey, hey, look: Mistakes were made all around, but the important thing is that this needless conflict is now over WITHOUT the loser's entire family line getting totally eradicated. So, you know. Progress."Last edited by oppyu; 2013-01-31 at 04:10 AM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Grubwiggler. Hinjo is fine -- he's nice enough, he's heroic enough, he was thrust into a difficult political situation and handled himself well. For as often as he's been in the comic, though, he's just not that exciting. Important to the plot, yes, but do you really look forward to seeing him? ...Grubwiggler, on the other hand, has an awesome name. Grubwiggler.
Shojo Not a contest. Remember when he threw that wizard's skeleton at Roy? Good times. I miss this guy.
Greysky Priest Hard one! The priest of Loki and the ancient black dragon are probably my favorite few-strip characters. I love the dragon for her role in the Darth Vaarsuvius arc... But the Greysky priest gets my vote by virtue of how much personality and nuance Rich was able to give him in a very short span. I'd vote for him over most of the main characters in the strip -- only wish he had a name!
Blackwing. I appreciate Blackwing for helping V's character development. Ganonron, like Haerta, is more of a plot device than a character.Last edited by Bird; 2013-01-31 at 04:50 AM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Hinjo vs. Hieronymus Grubwiggler
A real character vs. a shtik.
Shojo vs. Old Blind Pete
Shojo was funny; Pete was a treacherous ingrate.
Greysky Priest vs. Ancient Black Dragon
She had a lot more initiative than the Cleric of Loki. Besides, you know, being a dragon.
Ganonron vs. Blackwing
Blackwing is nicer, funnier, and has more to do in the comic. And he’s a stealth dinosaur.Last edited by Tannhaeuser; 2013-01-31 at 07:43 AM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Hinjo, Shojo, Greysky Priest (aka CoLe ), Blackwing
This time's was rather easy- mostly alot of characters I really like versus alot of characters I really, really like, so no contest in each case.
I like Grubwiggler and his whole arc, but Hinjo has a lot more screen time and character. Old Blind Pete was great (in a dickish sort of way) but Shojo is one of my favorite characters of all time (as is his quote among quotes). With CoLe I may be in the minority as ABD is quite ploterrific (and p'terrifying) but the C-man's just got a high charisma score, I guess... And while Ganonron is hilarious as a voice in V's head, like Haerta he's mostly a plot device and probably less funny than Jephton anyway- and thus wins Jimminy Crow-cket...

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Hinjo vs. Hieronymus Grubwiggler
Hinjo is not the greatest character, but he beats Grubwiggler
Shojo vs. Old Blind Pete
No contest - Shojo is one of the best chars in the comic! (sad for Pete, against Hinjo I would have picked him)
Greysky Priest [I would have named him Nameless Cleric of Loki] vs. Ancient Black Dragon
For that low amount of strips the Nameless Cleric of Loki hat pulled of a real great time. ABD is ok, but being a badass dragon isn't enough.
Ganonron vs. Blackwing
since Blackwing has becomes more or less a real character, he is quite good (although against other chars he could have quite a hard match)Last edited by ChristianSt; 2013-05-17 at 07:28 AM. Reason: Edited to add singature

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Hinjo. I've been loving pretty much every Paladin in this story that has a name. I like Hinjo trying to work out how to do Shojo's job while, ya know, actually being a Paladin and having to stick to the Lawful side of things.
Shojo. Which sucks a bit, 'cause I really liked Old Blind Pete. But he can't compete with the best ruler in the story. Dude also knew how to make a point.
Greysky Priest. Difficult choice, as the Ancient Black Dragon had massive importance for such a limited appearance. In the end, though, the Greysky Priest actually had a bit of personality around him, and I liked how he handled a simple hidden-heal job that suddenly turned into a desperate battle for survival against pretty much the entire thieve's guild.
Blackwing. He was a class feature. In the beginning of the strip. He has cast off the shackles of unimportance and is now V's staunch ally, which I rather like.Cuthalion's art is the prettiest art of all the art. Like my avatar.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
This round is rather easy
Hinjo
Shojo Greysky vs Azure contest had to end up this way... All these characters are likeable though, in their own way.
Cole (Greysky priest) No contest here. I really don't like the reptilian dumbass bondvillain.
Ganonron Class feature versus plot device, eh? I'll go with the epic conjurer.Last edited by Mike Havran; 2013-01-31 at 11:12 AM.
