Re: Favourite Character Tournament
And we open with another tough one. Great characters pitted against eachother... Not-so-great characters pitted against eachother. Well, here goes:
Mr Scruffy, Tsukiko, Jirix, Roy's Archon, Belkar Bitterleaf, Crystal, Secret SoD Character, Qarr
Julio, is hands-down one of the best minor characters ever, channeling so many steroetypes into one precise arc of awesome. But, Scruffy is Scruffy!
Tsukiko is not one of my favorite personalities, but she was very plot-relevant and had a few moments. I'd almost forgotten Sangwaan...
Aaargh! Leeky is, once more, one of my favorite one-arc characters! But Jirix's speech and presence during so many moments of awesome give him an edge.
Miko gave us many great arcs- but I just like R's A better...
Thahn, you great one-arcer, you; this was just one more fight you were not meant to win...
Crystal was annoying. But she made such great fodder for Belkar! Oh, you poor dumb pickle-woman indeed!
I actually do remember Trigak (who could forget Evan's Spiked Tentacles of Forced Intrusion) but assuming the Secret Character is, well, the only one it should be- no contest.
Qarr. Hands down.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
1. Mr. Scruffy. Not the biggest fan of too much meta-references, and Julio is all meta.
2. Tsukiko. Misguided as hell, but interesting.
3. Leeky Windstaff. Loved that dude, wish he stayed in the LG longer. Best of luck, Jirix!
4. Miko Miyazaki. Same reasons as Tsukiko
5. Thanh. I'm fairly neutral on the Belkster, but Thanh flat-out rocked. He and O-Chul exemplified the D&D Paladin for me.
6. Draketooth. See #s 2 and 4
7. SoD Character. And as epic and awesome as that story was, and as much as I like that Secret SoD character, I'd like toprotest his inclusion until such time as he appears or is referenced in the main comic.credit oppyu for shutting me down.
8. Qarr. I just like the dude.Last edited by Peelee; 2013-01-02 at 12:02 PM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
It would make things interesting, but the point of a seeded pyramid structure is to make sure Haley comes up against Roy in round 6, not round 2. I could go through and only shuffle the non-seeds, but at that point there's enough effort involved that the idea hits the wall of 'you already have an excel spreadsheet drawn up, and it took you enough time to track down the one strip in oots history where Sangwaan had relevant dialogue'.
Seriously, if you guys put not-Tsukiko into the second round, I'm probably going to have to go with her anguished scream as Xykon's zombie dragon kills her.Last edited by oppyu; 2013-01-02 at 12:19 PM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Mr. Scruffy ftw.
Tsukiko - more interesting than Sangwaan (maybe if she hadn't died so soon?), and it was fun to have Belkar make his misogynist jabs at someone who actually deserved them.
Leeky Winstaff - the quoted passage today is one of the best villainous monologues of all time, from one of the best OotS episodes of all time.
Miko Miyazaki - this was a hard one. I like Roy's Archon, and maybe if he gets some more screen time he can have some worthy development. But Miko was just a truly impressive character: complex, powerful, loathe-able, great for making the story more epic, great for having interesting (yet tragic) character development, great at inspiring some of Roy's best quips, and especially great at making the fandom passionate about the OotS.
Belkar - my inherent bias towards good makes me want to pick Thanh, but eh ... he just never won my heart like O-chul or Hinjo. And while Belkar's hateable in plenty of places, he's also loveable sometimes ... and drop-dead funny in others. Besides, I'm interested in seeing just how far his character development will go.
Girard Draketooth - the "PICKLE DEATH ATTACK" (hilarious) almost won me over to voting Crystal. But then I remembered that I don't particularly like Crystal in spite of her idiocy occasionally being very comic. Then again, I don't really like Girard either ... but at least he's more important to the grand plot, which makes him more interesting.
Secret SoD Guy - he almost fixed Redcloak. Maybe his legacy still will be able to make the world a little bit more right?
Qaar ... gotta admire the little guy's gutsy ambition. Plus, the Empress of Blood just wasn't all that entertaining to me, other than the visual spectacle of seeing her for the first time.Last edited by Draz74; 2013-01-02 at 03:29 PM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Mr. Scruffy, because I can't bear to see Belkar unhappy. Besides, corrupting cats is awesome!
Sangwaan, both because I was always intrigued by the character and because I can't stand Tsukiko.
Jirix, because I have a soft spot for the goblin rebellion.
Miyo Miyakazi, although it's a tough contest. But her ending was just so perfect.
Belkar Bitterleaf. No contest.
Crystal is the best nemesis ever.
Trigak, as I haven't read Start of Darkness.
The Empress of Blood is my hero. Heroine. Whatever.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Julio Scoundrél for his montage.
Sangwaan for her coolness in the face of zombie dragons.
Jirix for his political savvy.
Roy's Archon for not being slowed down by lacking hands.
Thanh for his mustache.
Girard Draketooth for his paranoia.
Pass due to not being familiar with Start of Darkness.
Empress of Blood for being awesome!

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Mr. Scruffy VS Julio Scoundrél
I have to say, the animal companions aren't my faves. I love Scruffs, but compared to Julio, no contest.
Sangwaan VS Tsukiko
Just for the death scene. Fantastic. One of my favorite moments in the comic (in terms of pure oomph)
Leeky Windstaff VS Jirix
Always liked the gnomes.
Roy's Archon VS Miko Miyazaki
Dang, these are actually two of the characters I liked most (for very different reasons). Miko may have been nasty, but she was brilliantly written. Roy's Archon might not have been in any way deep, but it/he was possibly the nicest character in the strip. Seriously. He's all good.
But Miko played a much larger role, so she gets this.
Belkar Bitterleaf VS Thanh
Thanh was fine. Fine don't cut it for the Belkster.
Crystal VS Girard Draketooth
I don't much like Crystal, but I just can't give it to someone I still feel there's so much we don't know about.
Trigak VS Secret SoD Character
Saddest moment ever.
Empress of Blood VS Qarr
Qarr. The Empress just bothers me.!

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Spoiler10: Mr. Scruffy - 12 - 57.14%
VS
Julio Scoundrél - 9 - 42.86%
Admirable showing from the few-strip wonder, but the Scruffinator wouldn't be defeated.
Sangwaan - 10 - 47.62%
VS
Tsukiko - 11 - 52.38%
I'll admit, you guys had me worried for a second; at one point Sangwaan was winning 5-1. But sanity and plot relevance prevailed.
Leeky Windstaff - 8 - 38.10%
VS
Jirix - 13 - 61.90%
Redcloak's second-in-command beats the enjoyably hammy but one-arc Leeky Windstaff... hehe, leaky staff.
Roy's Archon - 7 - 33.33%
VS
15: Miko Miyazaki - 14 - 66.67%
Everyone's least favourite paladin makes it through the first round; it'll be interesting to see exactly how strong her hatedom is in future rounds.
4: Belkar Bitterleaf - 12 - 57.14%
VS
Thanh - 9 - 42.86%
Thanh got over 40% of the vote against a protagonist... pretty damn impressive, even if he couldn't pull off the win. We miss you Thanh!
Crystal - 12 - 60.00%
VS
Girard Draketooth - 8 - 40.00%
Pickle death attack for the win! Unrelated, I would totally pay to see a band called Pickle Death Attack.
Trigak - 4 - 22.22%
VS
Secret SOD Character - 14 - 77.78%
It'll be interesting to see how far SSC goes with his fanbase of 'only people who have read SOD'.
Empress of Blood - 9 - 42.86%
VS
21: Qarr - 12 - 57.14%

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Xykon VS Geoff
Geoff hasn't been around long enough to make any big impression, and the few times he's been around his scenes weren't particularly memorable. Not memorable enough to compare to Xykon, at least.
Horace Greenhilt VS Niu
The whole afterlife arc is one of my least favorite in the comic. Niu, in my opinion, was more entertaining, even if Horace was needed for Roy's character development.
Ian Starshine VS Jenny
Have to go with the ill-tempered paranoid old man.
