Carn lets you know that the forest is home to a wide variety of Pokemon, mostly bugs and birds, but also ghosts and snakes and many more. "To be honest, I only ever saw these creatures as prey or competition. There is one beast in particular, snow white fur but with jagged red scars all over. A vicious, but mindless predator. I once watched it take down three vipers at once."

Carn cuts himself off and stops suddenly. He points over to the side, and you can see a few Pokemon through some thin shrubbery.

One is about four feet tall and pink-and-beige in color...but something is odd about it, which you can't quite make out from your point of view. It looks to be healing another Pokemon, that one quadrupedal and white with a sharp blue tail and a single blue horn coming out of the side of its head. They have not noticed you. You've only just started watching when the healing process looks finished and the white Pokemon stands back up.

Gritting his teeth, Mordecai forced himself upright despite the agonizing pain. No! He had to focus - Paka and his Zorua were counting on him to do so! He couldn't just roll over and accept it! He wouldn't!

"P-Paka - " He began, before swallowing. 'C'mon, Mordecai, you're a ranger! People are counting on you to succeed! Bear through it'! He mentally shouted at himself.

"Wing attack." He said, through strained teeth, pointing. The starly cocked his head to one side, giving a confused chirp.

"I'll..." His styler felt like lead in his hands. He strained to lift it, but to no avail - he couldn't get himself to use the thing.

Spite! By Lowe, he was in trouble here. Paka literally couldn't hurt ghosts in any other way. Don't lose it, Mordecai - everything will be fine if you keep your thoughts up.

Whatever that was seemed to be doing a great job - he was very thankful, but couldn't afford the spare words at the precise instant. Wait! He /did/ have a weapon!

"An - " His voice cracked. He bit his lip, and straightened. "Anything you can do, Zorua!"

Paka, still blissfully unaware of the danger he was in, hopped briefly on Mordecai's head for a moment, gave a chirp, and hopped off. Mordecai knock it off I wanna see what the pokemon is!

Having almost been captured, the Haunter decides to stop messing around with you and winds up for a massive punch. As it nears you, suddenly your Zorua jumps in the way! It takes the hit for you.

Pitch reaches for a Pokeball to arm himself, only to realize he used his last one on Lighter. The healer would be beyond useful, and the white one appeared to be a hunter of some sort. He wanted them; he wanted them badly! If he could just get the two Pokemon to come with him as far as Elrem, he might be able to catch them. The trick would be getting them to travel that far with him...

Pitch, trying to stay silent, scans the duo with his Pokedex. Perhaps the intel provided by the little device would give him an idea.

    "Zorua!"

Bruised and battered, Mordecai picked up his companion in one arm to shelter her from further harm. He was really glad that she resisted ghost strikes.

He lashed out with his styler, striking at the final haunter. "Paka! This one! Wing attack!"

But now that there were fewer, he kept an eye to the west. He definitely wanted to thank whomever was helping him when this was over.

Quinn eagerly but politely scans your Pokemon, reading each entry carefully. "Ooh, a Mienfoo! Those are pretty rare. I'm kind of jealous you have such a special Pokemon, Nikolas! Come on everyone, our turn." She motions for her Pokemon to give you a chance to scan them as well. She also releases a few more, a Delibird and a Gulpin.

The two wild Pokemon linger as the healer patches up the injured-looking hunter a bit more. Soon enough, your Pokedex returns you full info on Audino and Absol.

The Audino's entry mentions it being overtly nonviolent, while the Absol's entry has a little snippet about the species appreciating duels to determine supremacy.

Mordecai gave an exhale of relief as the final haunter fell. "Phew! Way to go, Paka!"

Paka, who at no point was aware that there was danger or possibly even that he was in a battle, hopped on Mordecai's head with a chirp.

Then he shifted - slightly startled at the voice in his head - but paused. Right - it was a psychic trainer. He'd been trained on them - they could read minds and tended to use psychic-type pokemon in general. If he ended up ever going for detective or commander training he'd have to learn how to lock his mind, but that wasn't in the cards anytime soon.

Aaaaaanyway, book information on 'what is a psychic' aside, this guy had helped him out considerably! He almost certainly would have died had he not had the extra help.

"Thank you for helping me!" He called out. "I was in over my head there!"

He then paused. He'd said 'human'? Did psychics not consider themselves humans any longer? Either way, that was fine - Mordecai wanted to be polite to his benefactor. Mental commands would explain why he didn't hear the commands to his benefactor's pokemon - they must be very stealthy!

He shifted the Zorua in his arms - she looked stable, just unconscious. "Thanks again." He whispered to her, not that she could hear him.

Carn grunts as you injure him and for a moment--a brief instant--a frighteningly murderous look flashes across his face, but it's gone just as quickly as it appeared. He nods and makes his way through the hedges.

Pointing at the Absol, Carn says in his most intimidating voice, "You. Me. Now."

The Audino whimpers and backs away while the Absol stands up straight and responds in its native tongue. Carn speaks in his native tongue as well, and the two exchange a brief conversation.

Then the two start circling each other, each waiting for the other to make the first move.

The yellow is the path they're following as they circle. You (as in Arc, Pitch probably won't be doing anything but watching) can control Carn and make his rolls--don't do the flying up in the air thing because the Absol definitely won't respect that.

Mordecai's eyes widened. Just for a moment, however, as glaring at the pokemon seemed like an exceptionally rude response from Mordecai - thus he kept his face pleasant immediately thereafter.

His mind, however, was racing: It was a pokemon?! Wow, that was nowhere on his list of expectations. He knew pokemon could be smart, but he hadn't imagined them actually talking to him. He thought even psychics could only speak to other psychics! Wait, was this pokemon psychic? He reached for his dex before pausing. He'd never thought to actually ask a pokemon's permission before scanning. Was that rude? Would he mind?

What did he say? 'Wow it's cool that you're a pokemon'? Should he even mention this? Was this a common thing, or not? No, that was probably rude and he was trying to thank the super helpful pokemon. Okay, this was silly - just act the same way he'd act to anything else.

"Oh! Well, thank you for - " He began, when he paused. He at no point said 'you are human'. That means the pokemon was reading his mind - which meant he was actually being a gigantic jerk despite not meaning to through his thought process! He hadn't meant to - his thoughts were still being read!

    "Er... I didn't mean... er..."

    He paused. Start over.

"Thank you for helping me! I'm Officer Mordecai Aumakua! What's your name?"

Frowning again at the girl's choice of word, Nikolas crosses his arms. "Like I said, they're all special," he says adamantly. He is however, not ungrateful, so he smiles at each individual Pokemon when he pulls out his Pokedex to scan them. Quite in awe of the number of assembled Pokemon, he asks, "You have a lot of Pokemon. How long have you been training?"

The Pokemon raises a hand to you and says, "Please relax, Officer Aumakua. I am called Iudex. It is nice to meet you; glad I could help you take care of these outlaw ghosts."

Quinn puts her hands behind her head as she thinks back. "Oh, hmm...wow! I guess it's been over four months now. I don't challenge gyms though, I spend almost all my time going on Ranger missions. There's been a rise in criminal activity over in Xylo, so I was dispatched to go help figure out what's going on.
