A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Cynthia, a small planet out in the Frontier, conventional wisdom would hold that it's orbit is much to close to Cronus, its star, to support an ecosystem, but do to the abnormally small energy output of Cronus, and Cynthia's unusually strong electromagnetic field, the planet exists within a sweet spot allowing it to have been colonized with very little Terraforming.
The development of the planet during the Solar Dynasties was carefully controlled, preventing any pollution or deforestation. This makes it one of the premier agricultural centers of the Known Worlds. Grain, fruit, meat, genuine leather or wood. Cynthia exports it all, this combined with it's positioning in a confluence of Canals make it a major trade hub. It helps that the government doesn't realize what it has and thus has minimal trade tariffs.
In far orbit around the planet is the space station Argus.
The Argus serves as a refueling station and a dock for ships too big or bulky to fly in Cynthia's atmosphere. It is also a common stop among many interstellar shuttle services.
The space station is alive with the sounds of hundred of people going about their business. Around you are people from all parts of the Known Worlds, both the Frontier and the Central Empire. Most notable among them are a group of three human men who don't seem to be doing anything but staring at their timepieces.
All seems normal and quiet until one of the three men pulls out a communicator and says one word. "Now." Then everything happens at once. Several monstrous beings of rotting flesh and wicked black steel burst forth from one of the docked ships. Flayers. The three men writhe and change as their flesh turns metallic and ceramic. Pulling out beamklaves the three mechanical men turn on the other inhabitants, cutting the to ribbons as the Flayers tear them to pieces. Finally there's a cacophony of engines as hundreds of ships emerge from the canals at once led by a massive Soulsteel ship larger than anything you've ever seen.

SpoilerWhy you are all here
SpoilerFidelis
SpoilerYou've been able to dig up some fairly convincing evidence that suggests that Yugash has been operating in the vicinity. However exploring the uncharted space where you think Yugash is could be very dangerous, not to mention the threat of the Scout Planet itself. You have taken the precaution of hiring some mercenaries to protect you, a group called the Black Arms. You have arranged to meet them here.
Bossk, Jinzou, and Swan
SpoilerThrough chance and circumstance both Swan and Jinzou have found themselves in the employ of the Black Arms, at least for the time being. Bossk recently got a job offer from an Innari. He styles him self an adventurer and is looking for some muscle fr an expedition into uncharted space. It's risky business, but the pay is good and if the expition turns up anything it could greatly help with building a name for the Black Arms. You've arranged to meet the client here.
Joy
SpoilerThe other Sidereals have tasked you with looking over a mercenary group known as the Black Arms that contains three Celestial Exalts. After quite a bit of searching you've tracked them down to this station where they will be meeting with a potential employer.
Roll Join Battle. In addition to the ten or so Flayers and the three men with Beamklaves their are approximately thirty extras that exist mostly as scenery and to be killed off by the bad guys.

Standing around an waiting for an employer wasn't really new to Swan. He's had enough 'hurry up and wait' moments from his career to become used to it. Anyways, here he could relax, and simply watch the people coming and going.
And at least a couple people just standing around. Huh. Checking their watches quite often. Wonder if they're waiting fo-
The second one of the men speaks into the communicator, Swan's hand is already moving towards his sword, and by the time the monsters drop down it's clearing his sheath as he throws himself forward. Looks like Buisness will have to wait.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Joy had been approaching the mercenaries with the intent of introducing herself, almost skipping as she listened to a lighthearted dance tune. After all, if she got there before the employer, it'd be easier to make an excuse for her to tack on, and gave her time to explain herself. There's a sudden twist of wrong, the forces of Serenity, Battles, and Endings all suddenly being thrown sideways by the rapid expenditure of essence disruption the calculations. Her face suddenly became one of worry, and she adjusted her soundtrack to something considerably more intense and lively.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Fidelis is reclining in his chair, working through a cup of Kaff when he hears the commotion start. He's out of his chair and gone for cover before he consciously registers the sounds of weaponry and fighting, examining the terrain as he draws his blaster.
He hisses under his breath at what he sees. The only upside is that where normally he'd have to pick out bystanders from combatants, the mechanical nature of these terrorists means he probably doesn't need to worry about firing on an innocent who has also gone for her gun. Though he doesn't want to wait to intercept a bolt from a less obvious combatant anyway.
"This would never be tolerated back home," he hissed.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Bossk peered through his sunglasses at the denizens of the space port as they went about their business. Lets see... what did Innari look like again? Are they those large, golem shaped buggers that look like they're made out of rock? No, those guys are Lurks. Maybe the fat, whiskered brown mammals? Wait, those are Rein. Bossk blew air through his nostrils. Grisil 7's spires had been a very homogeneous environment; it was difficult learning all the names and peculiarities of the different species that traveled canalspace.
Bossk turned and looked out the window. Well, at least space looks the same anywhere you go. The dark void, sprinkled with the millions of tiny stars and sinuous colors of the canals, interrupted only by a vast attack fleet of hundreds of ships led by a massive Soulsteel Behemoth... wait, what?
His trenchcoat flaring behind him, Bossk whipped around just in time to see half a dozen Flayers tear a man to pieces.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Jinzou is standing off to the side of the crowd eating her way through a bowl of noodles just as the fun starts. There is a happy little smile on her face that disappears as soon as the carnage begins. It doesn't turn into a frown until a fleeing bystander runs into her, jolting the bowl from her hands and spilling it all over the floor. "Oh dammit. I was enjoying that." Jinzou mutters more in annoyance at the loss of food than at the sudden danger to herself; she was used to the later, but still looked for the former everywhere she went.
"Guess I should probably do something." She comments as he witnesses a few people in the crowd springing to defend themselves, one of such including her new employer. Her stance shifts as she slides her right leg backwards, resting her weight lightly so that she could move in any direction on a moment's notice. Her arms raise as if they were cradling a gun pointed in the direction of the newly appeared threats.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
"Pardon me, sirs?" Joy decides to make the foes with beamklaives the highest priority, as the smaller group would be easier to dance around, at least compared to a ravening horde. The mercenaries, she figured, would be more drawn to those anyhow. As she approaches, she holds up her hand in a halfhearted wave for attention that, thanks to her wrist-mounted weapon, would help her line up her shot. "You need to stop killing people."
Deciding to start with the nearest of them, Joy suddenly flicks her wrist downward, causing a holographic disk to shoot from the launcher on her wrist. In reality, the bright blue shuriken was a weak anima field directed inward to contain an electric charge, but the distinction would likely be lost on the nearest of the three mechanized attackers once his muscles were made to spasm.
SpoilerAim for a tick, then spend 3m on the First Firearms Excellency. Any stunt dice are to be converted into target number reduction, as per World-Shaping Artistic Vision.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Swan's charge towards the things is hampered by the various obstacles, like fleeing civilians. Legs pumping, he half-steps half jumps onto one of the low couches, tipping it over, but giving him enough height that his jump puts his feet just on the level of their heads. Sure, getting hit by combat boots on a head or shoulder is unpleasant, but at least now he can get to the beamklave wielders.
Leaving a few stunned and bruised civilians behind, the Abyssal dives onto the back of the men, sword first. Letting the thing's body absorb the force of his fall, it also takes the thrust hard, which allows Swan to take a vicious slice out of the body in order to free his sword.

Alright, Swan was going after the ones with the laser swords. He's tough, he should be able to take them, or at least survive. So I'll take- Bossk peered over the tops of his sunglasses at the Flayers emerging from one of the docked ships -the Flayers. Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Swan
As the first stroke is falling, the darkness of the void seems to boil out of Sawn, not hiding him as would be expected, no instead it seems to accentuate him and the mad gleam in his eyes.
The beamklave's strike slows, caught on the black presence, but Swan's parry is unhampered, catching the beam on his own sword for a second, before knocking it back.
The reply to the second swing is worse. The darkness that was boiling forth now erupts outward, and a shape forms in the darkness. A swan, neck and wings broken so bad that the bones clearly exit the skin, with gashes leaking terrible fluids. It's death-glazed eyes still turn though, wildly at first, then focusing on it's attacker.
The beamklave's light seems feeble, but it continues onward, only to be batted aside by Swan, who this time returns the slash, carving a great slice out of the thing's midsection.
The Third and final attack seems anticlimatic, as the deathknight steps around the almost glacial swing, to carve into the arm instead.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Seeing that one of the Exalts she had been sent to find had the mechanical men well in hand, Joy decided to continue on toward the Flayers. Essence flowed through her body, accelerating the parts of her brain that handled trajectory and behavior analysis. Once she was within range of the oncoming Flayers, she gestured out toward them with her wrist, firing an unusually large disc.
The projectile flies toward one of the Flayers over the shoulder of another Exalt, the more intense coloring and increased size of the disc being due to an infusion of Essence by Joy to provide it with multiple layers of fielded charges. After the disc hits the first target, it ricochets into an adjacent Flayer. The blue disc bounces on from one marauder to the next, delivering stunning bolts to the frontmost chargers to add a pile of stunned bodies to the obstacles of the invaders. The disc actually skids between one hit and the next as the throne reacts to the glowing blue pinball of pain, but the press is thick enough that a miss won't disrupt the chain too terribly.
SpoilerSpending 8m personal on Steel and Smoke Mandala for a flurry of eight attacks against eight targets. If there are signifigantly fewer Flayers than I thought, redirect attacks to the mechanical men. Any stunt dice are to convert into target number reduction.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
The electric blast pinballs between Flayers creating a massive technicolor light show, when the light fades enough to see the aftermath only two of the ten Flayers remain standing.
These two unfazed by their fallen brethren leap upon Bossk wildly flailing their arms trying to rake into his flesh with their wicked steel talons.
On the other side of the room the fallen robot rams his beamklaive into the chest of a passing bystander using the leverage to pull himself to his feet.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Jinzou shifts backwards as a screaming woman nearly runs into her, not even looking where she is going in her fright. Were this not enough, a whole crowd of screaming people stand between her and the disparate attackers. Jinzou could still shoot past them, as she was taller than most, but it would be harder than desirable. Jinzou skips to the side planting herself atop a nearby chair and rests her right leg down on the table behind for stability, giving her a clear view of the battlefield.
Her empty hands snap forward into a shooting position in what seems to be a meaningless gesture, but the purpose of such an action is made clear in a flash of gold as a gigantic rifle appears in Jinzou's hand. No sooner does it appear than does Jinzou pull the trigger, firing a burst of bullets over the head of the crowd and towards the two mechanical men.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Almost casually, Swan plants his blade in a fallen mechanical man, and in the same motion flips out his gun, adopting a picture perfect parade ground firing stance. He fires twice, the first a body shot to a flayer, the second a headshot to put it down for good.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Seeing the rain of weaponry pouring towards the enemies, Fidelis brings up his arm in a smooth arc and times his pull of the trigger so that it will intersect with his target, rather than taking a more traditional aim. He balances his firing hand cupped in his left for stability, but other than that relies more on reflex than form. The bolt is intended for the last flayer that seems to be untargeted in an attempt to put it down, though he continues his arc towards the mechanical men and leaves his firearm trained on them in case they look to be getting back up.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
((I'm not sure how much time I'll have at a comp this weekend, so I'm just posting my action now. Should still make sense, although it may have Bossk punching an
deadinactive flayer if Fidelis kills one.))
Bossk took a step forward as the Flayers' blows ineffectually glanced off his essence hardened arms. It was an old brawler trick. When up against someone who punches fast but doesn't hit all that hard, let them commit to the first blow and focus on blocking it. Then clock em back while they're off balance. Bossk cupped both of his hands and slapped the sides of the Flayers' heads, bringing them together in classic brawling fashion.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
In a flurry of bullets and fists the fight comes to an end. The strange mechanical men have been reduced to slag, unbelievably large lumps of liquified moonsilver and soulsteel where their corpses had been. The flayers lie on the floor their bodies brutally mangled, a dim predatory cunning still seems to shine in a few of their eyes but their bodies are twisted beyond all maneuverability.
The frightened citizens have stopped running now staring at the carnage with stupefied awe and terror. In the middle of the station lies the dead civilian, the hole burned into his chest by the beamklaive a shocking reminder that not even your best efforts were able to save everyone. Still, the losses would have been much worse had you not been here.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Joy walks nonchalantly up to her fellow Exalts, a bright smile on her face as she changes out the essence clip on her Stormwand. She was confident that she had made a good first impression with her helping to clear out the rabble, at least. "Hi! I'm Joy, of Discovery. I don't suppose you guys have any plans for the imminent invasion fleet, do you?"
In all of the excitement, it can be easy to overlook monstruous soulsteel war machines, but Sidereals made a living of keeping track of things that could be important later.Half-Orc Scout by Magioth

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
The darkness recedes a bit, becoming indistinct once more, and the figure the light turns towards the happy figure, before turning to patrol the dead bodies.
"Call me Swan. And, well, fleet battles are for navy pukes. I'm a groundpounder. Doubt we can really do anything to stop it, not unless his place has rather more military than they've shown so far. "
Swan occupies himself making sure that each of the flayers is truly dead. Easy enough when they aren't moving. Not wanting to waste bullets, he simply gives each corpse with light still in it's eyes a few good simple hacks with River. He fears his fate too much, and his reward is small, who will not put it to the touch, to win or lose it all.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
"So that means evacuation and- Oh!" Noting that one of the mechanical men hadn't dissolved yet, and immediately goes about checking his injuries. While she wasn't the best at treating people, all of her Caste had a respectable ammount of medical training. Plus, nobody else was rising to the occasion, so she was firmly within her element. "Live source of information, could be helpful later. Anyhow, evacuation?"
The lacerations were sever, and would need patching. Her normal medical materials weren't suited for the specialized materials the mechanical men were made of, but there was still material to work with. Using what tools she had to gather up the liquid remains of the slain mechanical men, Joy would combine it with her own medical supplies to create a liquid patch to seal and stabilize the wounds inflicted on her patient.Last edited by Ganurath; 2012-08-13 at 12:52 PM.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Bossk turns to look at the window at the fleet of advancing ships. Turning on his heel, he dashed past Joy and Swan, ignoring their conversion. Crashing into the croud, Bossk reached out with his hand, grabbing the lapel of the closest station crew member and pulling him to his face.
"The control station! Bossk shouted at the man. "Where are the controls to the station's comms array, thrusters, and fuel storage?"

You grab a gawky young man in his late teens or early twenties. The boy is clearly in a state of shock his eyes glazed over and answers mechanically. "Those areas are for employees only."

Watching for danger, Swan stalks over to the ship the Flayers emerged from: perhaps there are more beings inside.

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Bossk turned a bit, giving the employee a view of the invasion fleet just outside the window and the Flayer remains scattered around the floor of the station, and said loudly. "This isn't any time to **** around. If someone doesn't send out the alarm that invasion fleet will have the whole sector by the balls. The only way anyone's got a chance of mounting a defense is with a warning. Are you going to cooperate or not?"

Re: A Galaxy on the Brink of Chaos IC
Swan
The ship appears to be an ordinary cargo hauler, a thirty yard long expanse of titanium, the metal is scuffed and dented in places showing decades of wear and tear. All in all it could go anywhere in the Known Worlds without being remarked upon.
The airlock is still open revealing a dimly lit interior and allowing a sickly sweet scent to weft out into the station.
Bossk
The young man stares blankly at the scene for a moment, then your yelling seems to knock some sense into his head. Shaking his head he says contritely. "Uhh, sorry." After he regains his senses the boy points to a door marked 'Employees Only', throwing you a keycard he says. "That door will lead you too a hallway. Third door on the left is the control room, first door on the right is the stairwell down to the storage bay. The elevator is right across from it if you would rather take that."Avatar by Elagune

Swan moves into the ship. Might be more enemies, or maybe survivors. Someone, something, had to pilot this, though. Cockpit shouldn't be too hard to find.
