Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
Went in with Classic Ironman, I'm averaging something like 2 troops lost per mission. Reasonably sure they've captured the XCom feel, at least in my mind.
Man this thing was full of outdated stuff.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
Been playing for a couple of hours now. I'm still in what the game seems to consider the tutorial (which is awfully long for a tutorial), on normal. I like what I see so far.
Haven't lost any troops besides the ones that automatically die in the first mission, yet. Have definitely noticed that the fights can be risky, though - everyone in my squad was wounded in the rescue mission I did, most for around half of their health. I was worried about losing them during the mission, and afterward and I was worried that I'd be without three of them in my next one, since the best-off one needed seven days to heal. (Turns out I was fine, took around ten days or so before the next mission.)
Seems like there's plenty of things to do and possibilities to explore, even from what little I've seen so far (which I'm sure isn't everything, since again, still in the tutorial). I look forward to more.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
From what I've seen of the health system, they made troopers about twice as durable, so they can generally survive one hit, but go down on the second. This was most likely to offset the smaller squad size, but does not nesecarilly (sic) make it any easier. I would say that twice the endurance but the same amount of actions balances out to where I would dub it about a 6-9 man team in old X-Com depending on squad size. That plus getting out of the rookie uselesness stage quicker.
LPs that I like to think I will get back to some day.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
Well, scratch my "haven't lost anyone but the scripted deaths" part. Brought three recruits with me on my last mission, lost two of them. Naturally happened to be the two armed with arc throwers, so I was unable to capture an alien, which is my current side-objective. I seem to be out of the tutorial though, as it's letting me decide what I want to do at my base fully now.
Speaking of characters, though, I now have five who have earned at least one promotion, at which point I customize them. Customization's not as thorough as I'd like - looks like the basic body type is always the same for each given gender, for example - but I'm making do. Two have earned nicknames, too. My characters so far:
Seargent Kanji Tatsumi, "Beefcake." Heavy-class male.
Seargent Chie Satonaka, "Carnivore." Assault-class female.
Corporal Akihiko Sanada. Support-class male.
Corporal Yosuke Hanamura. Sniper-class male.
Squaddie Shinjiro Aragaki. Heavy-class male.
Yeah, I'm basing everyone on Persona characters . Picking which ones based on class, though, which means I'll have to switch to something else once I run out of options for a given class. Which will happen awfully fast if I don't start getting more female soldiers, since Persona casts are about 50/50 male/female. Out of nine other soldiers I have, only one is female, and it doesn't look like I can control which sex I get when recruiting new ones.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
Having a great time with it so far. I'm doing Normal Ironman myself, since I'm a big weenie and hate it when I lose characters <T_T>
So far, Normal has been just hard enough to be fun, but not so hard as to be annoying; which is exactly what I'm after; at least for a first run.
The one thing driving me nuts though: Panic levels! Mein gott, everyone is panicking and satellites take ages to build! (That's not even including the uplinks!) No one has left the council yet, but I'm convinced it won't be long. Germany would have had I not gotten lucky with a Terror Mission there and dropped their panic back to 1.
I will also admit that the HUGE size of the male soldiers really makes me think "Space Marines" from WH40k... which inevitably prompts me to wonder where the researches are for "Bolter" and "Chainsword".
As for losses... I believe I'm up to 7 so far, mostly rookies, but I lost my favorite Support soldier too - that was incredibly disappointing. Lucky crit got her, bleh. But that's X-Com for ya.
SpoilerI recently got a really nice ability from the Officer Training School too - Rookies automatically become Squadies, so all new hires (and my existing backstock of rookies) all come equipped with a class to begin with. I haven't had it long but I think that's going to be *huge* going forward; since none of my soldiers will be total crap.
I've found starting in Asia a very useful thing due to the 50% discount on Officer Training and Engineering things. It's stretched my meagre money supply quite a bit further since (so far) selling corpses and the like isn't worth a whole heck of a lot.Computer is back! Yay!

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
Yeah, I'm getting worried about that myself. I'm in month 2, and still working with just two satellites. It's becoming obvious that I'll need to get more up quick, but money and the supplies needed are a tad low right now. Might have some trouble in the future.
Yeah, I noticed that to - well, not the WH40k thing, since I'm not familiar with that, but the design of the male soldiers being so huge. It's off-putting, especially since the characters I'm naming/designing mine after are all or normal or skinny builds, being from Japanese games and all.
I had my first (at the time only) support soldier get hit hard in a mission not long ago. He went into some kind of critical state, which required a medkit to fix, and none of my other soldiers had one. Fortunately I finished the mission before he bled out, so he survived, but has to spend something like 13 days in recovery.
SpoilerYou were allowed to start in Asia? I only had the option of North America or Europe. Went with North America basically at random, because I wasn't sure which one would be more useful.
A question: is there any way to control what class a unit gets upon initial promotion? Because I've gotten something like five heavies already, but still have only one sniper and assault, which is a bit frustrating.

Classes are totally random I'm afraid, at least as far as I can tell.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
Well, an update on my progress. I've started the third month with no further casualties, though injuries are becoming more common. I've just done my first mission against a landing UFO, which was a resounding success, despite a couple of bad injuries.
My team has grown substantially, and now consists of:
SpoilerCaptain Chie Satonaka, "Carnivore." Assault-class female.
Lieutenant Kanji Tatsumi, "Beefcake." Heavy-class male.
Lieutenant 5th-Gen Labrys, "Steel." Heavy-class female.
Lieutenant Yosuke Hanamura, "Ressentiment." Sniper-class male.
Seargent Akihiko Sanada, "Two-Fist." Support-class male.
Seargent Shinjiro Aragaki, "Gourmet." Heavy-class male.
Seargent Yukiko Amagi, "Snow Black." Support-class female.
Seargent Yukari Takeba, "Gale." Sniper-class female.
Squaddie Junpei Iori. Heavy-class male.
Squaddie Rise Kujikawa. Support-class female.
As far as Persona characters goes, I'm running out of ones to use. I don't think Ken or Koromaru work, being a kid and a dog, so that leaves only a handful, and since I'm only assigning them to classes that I think are appropriate, and most are female... well, I'll dipping into other things to base my characters on soon I think.
Yeah, still rather unbalanced in classes overall. Chie is still my only Assault trooper, so she's been in almost every mission I've done (all save when she was injured), thus being my highest-ranked unit easily. She's been insanely useful though, with run-and-gun being a fantastic skill all around, and lightning reflexes allowing me to waste enemy overwatches harmlessly, so I really want the game to cough up another Assault-class unit for me. Meanwhile, I have four heavies, three supports, and only two snipers. Guess I need to get back to training those recruits...
I've gotten another satellite uplink up, and have two more satellites in development, so hopefully that'll be up and running soon. Which is good, because a few countries are getting up there in panic levels (India is a particular worry at 4, and I have five others at 3). However, all this construction I'm doing is drastically increasing my upkeep, a consequently cutting the amount of spending money I get from the council. And I'll need another aircraft or two once those satellites go up. I'm beginning to see what a balancing act this game can really be.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
I just did the stupidest thing.
I can hardly believe I did it frankly.
Here's the situation:
I have 6 squad members, including 4 assaults, 1 Major level Heavy, and a Captain level Sniper all in a single long alleyway. I also have a VIP I'm escorting.
I'm also within Dashing distance of the exit! Hooray, mission will soon be over!
Around the corner is a Thin Man. I know he's there, I know he just set himself to Overwatch.
What do I do? Do I use one of my assaults with Lightning Reflexes to waste his reaction shot? No no no that would be the SMART thing to do.
Instead I, for reasons entirely beyond my understanding, decided to send the VIP out because "Hey, he'll make it to the drop zone and be safe!"
It ended exactly as you'd expect - VIP dead, mission failed. <X_X> Since I'm on Ironman I can't reload and undo the damage too.
Also despite winning all but that one mission with Good or better ratings, half my countries now have 4-bars of panic, and Russia who I *just* put a Satellite over is now up to 5.
<;_;> I do believe I am doomed.
On the upside, I do have lasers now, and they're much more powerful than kinetic weapons. (I admit though, I do love the sound of kinetic weapons, so I'll miss them for that reason alone.)
I will say however that the ability to have all new recruits start as Squaddies is *incredibly* useful. I bought 3 soldiers recently and all 3 turned out to be Assaults. Needless to say this has been an awesomely effective team - the Sniper and Heavy hang back, usually on overwatch, while the assaults rush up and scout.
The only real flaw thus-far has been the assaults aren't getting a whole lot of kills, since the Heavy is a Major and can shoot twice with great accuracy and damage. She has more kills than everyone on my team combined, including the Captain level sniper!Computer is back! Yay!

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
This is what has been bothering me about the game, too. I've lost two countries, Germany and France, to panic and they left the council. And there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. For the entirety of months two and three, I had no missions in Europe whatsoever.
And satellites are both too expensive and too logistically intensive. I put up my third satellite at the end of month 3, at the cost of skimping on interceptor upgrades and squad armor. The first chapter of The Book of Svarog

I didn't know XCOM had been released, or was on the cusp of being released in the case of Australia.
Quick question: should I pick up XCOM for the PC or a console?

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
PC. Definitely, presuming you have the system to run it.
That said, I'm unable to play due to no cash, so keep up the fun mission tidbits. Having been playing UFO:AI a bit lately, I find that I miss the Inventory management when playing the demo, but dis-like it while playing UFO. Strange.
Anybody playing a lower difficulty level and finding out that the Panic increase is difficulty related?
Also those who were asking about the original X-Com, you couldn't have all countries quit on you, because Russia would never quit. My cousin had a save with a few techs to research and only Russia still funding him. (Officially. He was farming Alien Bases and then selling one or two million credits worth of plasma weapons at a time.)

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
Ouch. I'd be bashing my head against the wall if I did something like that. Fortunately, I'm not playing on Iron Man, so I could redo it if it happened.
I researched lasers pretty early, and have been slowly purchasing them, in between the myriad other things this game has for me to spend money on. By alternating them among my units so I can have almost everyone going on a mission now using them (though I only bother to give laser pistols to my snipers). Some seem better than others, honestly. The laser sniper rifle is an amazing upgrade; the laser shotgun, much less so.
Anyway, I just did a big milestone mission: my first attack on an Alien base.
SpoilerNow that was a harrowing mission. I got out with everyone alive, but just barely. Two were critically wounded, and no one escaped unscathed.
By far my mission MVP was Yukari, my sniper. I swear she must have taken out half of the aliens in that base, literally. She now has a kill count higher even than Chie's - yet because apparently you can only get one promotion at a time, she only went up to Lieutenant. Slightly annoying, but hopefully it'll mean that her next promotions will come faster than they normally would.
The base was very light on cover, it seemed - many of what looked like low walls didn't offer any - which made it tough to position units effectively. I used up four med-pack healings during it (one carried by Yukari, three by Yukiko), most of them quite early. By the end I had Chie, my highest-rank unit and only Assault, down to one health and was being stupidly cautious with her. The alien leader turned out to have mind control powers, and he made one of my heavies shoot Yukiko, my favorite support, dropping her into critical condition. I was going to try and capture the leader, since the mission briefing recommended it, but given the circumstances (on top of the above, Chie was my unit with the arc thrower), I decided to go for the kill - and Yukari obliged with a critical hit.
Notable engagements include two instances where I had three Cryssalids deploy right next to a unit I had just moved - one of these being my first encounter in the fight! Managed to get past one of these mostly because of an ability Chie had that let her take an automatic reaction shot when enemies got within four spaces of her (she wasn't the unit I had moved, but she was nearby at the time); and another because I still had the unit's second move available, so he withdrew, I had a heavy drop a missile on the trio, and finished them with basic fire and overwatches.
Oh, and the best part of all this? On top of all the other rewards (of which there were plenty), completing this mission dropped panic by 2 points globally. Which is exactly what I needed, with more countries hitting 3 and 4 panic points. *
Of course, now two-thirds of my non-rookie units are wounded, but a couple are ones that were wounded before that mission and will be back in action in just a few days, so I should be good.
* ...and of course, after I say this, when I check my panic levels after my latest mission, I find that Egypt is back up to 4 and a couple other countries have returned to 3 already . At least I finally got a second Assault trooper from that mission, though.

I hated the demo, mainly due to the fact it was just hand holding. I have hopes for the game, but I haven't bought it yet.
Is the beginning a forced tutorial section? Because I got enough of that from said demo.Originally Posted by Alabenson

Based on what I'm reading though, it seems that after a handful of missions your teams are essentially sentient scar material stuffed into anthropomorphic suits and prodded to move with electric pulses.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
I got the game tonight. XBox version. It's the only game for my XBox besides Duke Nukem Forever that I've payed full price for (because I mean, I had to. )
Anyway, although I've NEVER played XCom before, after watching Iskandar's LPs and a variety of pre-release footage for this game, I decided to jump straight into Classic Ironman mode. I skipped the tutorial mission and got down to it. First mission, I got a total party wipeout. Apparently, it's Game Over if you wipeout on the first mission, but there was an option to retry. Second time I only lost half my squad.
The second mission, everyone survived! I count myself lucky so far. After two missions, I have 4 squaddies--one of each character class. An extremely balanced team, but we'll see how long that lasts.
I'm honestly surprised at how much fun this game is. I'm keenly looking forward to what the future has in store with this game.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
I've played a few hours and got all squad laser weapons unlocked though not enough engineers to fabricate them yet. Then I crashed and learned that autosave was not on by default
My restart is going fine. I have laser rifles and will soon have better armor for my troops. Even survived my first terror mission. So far the game seems pretty solid. The scripted parts of the tutorial (the first mission and forced choices for the beginning story missions) can thankfully be skipped.
The missions i've had so far are fun. I was dubious of the bomb mission at first. However the fun factor of it lets you ignore then questionable logic for why the aliens would plant a bomb that only you can defuse. If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!

Started playing on Classic but then I had three 78+ shots miss in a row and decided "Classic is BS" and switched to normal. I've been doing great since then. It's still hard, I usually come back with 2-3 wounded troops but my guys have stopped dieing because 78% chance to hit hit 0% of the time.
I'm getting my satellite nexus up and running soon and should have enough satellites to blanket North America and finish off Europe.
Loving the game and my guys are turning into real monsters.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
I'm a few months in, been sitting on the Alien Base mission for some time, just now feeling comfortable enough to do it.
Bad base-building early on meant It took me awhile to get more satellites in the sky, so I lost the UK. However, I've managed to only lose one trooper (besides the 3 in the tutorial mission) without resorting to excessive save-scumming (Usually if one trooper dies, it's because I've totally screwed myself over, and several more are soon to follow, so I reload. I am not Ironman).
I researched Laser weapons, but currently only use them for snipers, heavies, and Scatter Lasers. I've got high-ranked assault trooper with an Arc thrower whose collected enough light plasma rifles (Marginally better than laser rifles) to keep my troops equipped.
My favorite minor-feature is the Nickname generator. I don't know if it's a coincidence that my troops keep getting fitting nicknames, or if they are able to detect things.
For example, I had shot down a terror ship. I brought a team of veterans and a corporal (Assault trooper).
They get to the top of the stairs and the corporal is the first through the door. He steps through, spots three cryssalids.
They all use their "I've been spotted" move to cluster right next to him, he uses his second move to book it through the door, I imagine shouting "NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE".
The rest of my team goes on Overwatch and gun down the 'lids as they move through the door.
Later in the mission, the same trooper is checking out a side room. A Cyberdisk pops out of nowhere, switches to offensive mode, moves right next to him, and fires.
somehow it misses. My heavy with HEAT ammo is able to move into position and hit it, letting my poor assault trooper finish it off.
After that mission, the Assault trooper (Who managed to make it through unscathed), get's the nickname "D.O.A". I'm taking that as a reference to his habit of stumbling into certain death.
Also, I got a soldier from one mission who showed up with the nickname "Boom Boom". I like to imagine him showing up at base.
"Hello, my name is Captain Williams. However, you can call me Boom Boom"'
Also, protip for those just starting. When given the choice of first researches? Pick Armor. Three extra HP is MUCH better than 10% boost to aim.Last edited by BRC; 2012-10-10 at 10:46 AM.

My main Assault trooper is also call D.O.A and I think it's a fitting nickname for him because his promotion took place right after a mission where he went down and came within a round of dying from bleed out.
I also had a heavy called "Nuke" after he killed 3 cyrssalids and 2 floaters with a rocket. Course he died in a mission soon after :( but oh well can't win them all.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
I played a couple more hours, and my guys are dropping left and right. After my main troopers all got seriously injured, my backup guy and a squad of rookies Code Black'd investigating my first medium-size UFO crash (damn SlenderMen ).
I'm into the second month now and I have 19 scientists but still only 5 engineers, so I can't build additional satellite capabilities. Right now I have three countries at full panic level and there's not much I can do about it. I got a decent amount of cash which I've used to excavate and expand my base. I had to build a regular power station because I don't have the engineers for the thermal yet. Researched lasers but not enough engineers to build them. Maybe I can build the carapace armor I researched. I'm not sure what the requirements are for that, but all I have now is rookies until my other soldiers recover and they need all the help they can get.
I'm kinda glad that individual missions don't last too long, because I'm enjoying the strategic level of the game just as much as the tactical level. It also makes it feel like I'm moving things right along, for good or for ill.

Re: XCOM: One Does Not Simply "Shoot" a Cryssalid...
Hey guys. While I don't play X-Com myself, I read a webcomic that makes jokes on different games. Anyways, I thought I'd leave this here and hope someone here appreciates it to the fullest extent.

Nice, but they forgot to factor in the difficulty level. I'm not rescuing anybody flagged as "very difficult" even if they're offering exactly what I need the most, because you have to actually win the mission to get the rewards.

Very Difficult missions when I played on normal yesterday just upped the number of aliens. As long as you take it slow, you shouldn't get too overwhelmed. Plus you get a nice bounty of weapon frags and corpses.

Yeah, Very Difficult levels just mean I have to bring my A-Team, rather than dragging along a few low level troopers in need of XP
