Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
Probably for the best then, Wookie. I did little besides driving away the elves with some unknown wooden bits.

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
After a series of events which included being locked out of my house for a number of hours (most of 4 to be exact ), I was unable to get to the fort. However! Tonight (barring any more unforescene circumstances *knocks on nearest piece of tree material*) I should be able to get things moving again.
Other than breaching the caverns to play with the critters there, anyone else have any insanity they want to see me try?

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
Set up the grand arena to pit our bronze collossus against all comers. We have like 40 goblin prisoners as well as various beasts and even an ettin. Which would all die horribly to the BC, but it would be an awesome and dwarvish spectacle.
Claspedchurches: This is a mudstone dwarven fortress. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with bauxite, studded with ice, decorated with gold, and adorned with hanging rings of magma. This fortress menaces with spikes of steel, iron, bronze, and silver. On the fortress is an image of an image of cheese in pitchblende.
On the fortress is an image of a megaweapon in gold, silver, jet, obsidian and adamantine. The goblins are burning.

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
Or just manually rotate miners in andout of the burrow when they get hungry/tired or whatever. I left a lot more mining designation than we have miners to dig it, so I wanted to force them to get a work on the arena. That is whole purpose of the burrow. That and to prevent them from dropping a roof on themselves while they channel it out.

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
Thanks to yet another unforescene series of events (that was not limited to finding one of our guinea pigs very sick, taking her to the vet, and then having to put her down because that was the best option with how sick she was (only getting air to about 1/4 of one of her lungs )) I was only able to get a couple of days into the fort.
Tonight however the wifey will be visiting a friend, so in true dwarven fashion there shall be drinking and madidiocyheroics. I was able to set up designations to dig into the caves and dig one of our critters (read: forgotten beast) out of a stairwell, but it seems our miners are either lost, or can't find their picks at the moment. We also have a brand spanking new critter that showed up just before I had to call it quits for the night, so expect lots of Fun.

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
At least three of them are in the aforementioned arena burrow, working on digging out the collosseum. F7 should take you to them.

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
Journal of
OverseerGrand Zoologist Extrodinare Wookieetank:
Spoiler1st of Granite, 128: I find myself in charge yet again! After a rather boring run last time round in charge, this time I plan to spice things up by exploring our forgotten beast zoo. Nothing could possible go wrong with this plan.
7th of Granite, 128: One of our dorfs made an acacia ring. Also it seems that we've had a number of masterpiece engravings engraved.
6th of Slate, 128: Apparently I slept for a goodly while, since no one saw fit to wake me till this new critter shows up and they come barging hollerin about an enormous one-eyed gopher twisted into humanoid form that undulates rhythmically and shoots web. For starters we're nowhere near the fireswamps where ROUS make their home, and second when was the last time anyone heard of an ROUS trying to be Spiderman. I mean seriously people, get back to digging already. Seeing as how our miners having seemingly vanished from the arena, I order more picks made so we can begin our zoological explorations.
7th of Slate, 128: Several of our animals keep showing up missing for a week or more and then I keep getting reports of others being slaughtered. I am unsure of the cause of any of this and ask my minions to investigate.
9th of Slate, 128: Looks like at least one of our dwarfs is mining for today we have struck rock crystal.
11th of Slate, 128: Our resident vampire seems to have gotten loose. Finally something interesting is happening! For lack of anything better to do I start a bet pool going as to who will be the first victim on this season of Vampire Survivor.
13th of Slate, 128: With the vampire no longer contained, and our miners off somewhere pretending to be productive, I order for the construtions between the vampire deen and the caverns removed. Now we can finally go on our subterrainian safari. Honor and Glory here I come! But first, I order our militia to escort me. Don't want anything happening to our head zoologist on his travels.
16th of Slate, 128: Vampire McUrist has wandered back to his lair. Guess I should go seal him in, what with this whole public opion and such. Don't want the masses getting restless. Also looks like we have some newparticipants in Vampire Survivor, I mean migrants. Our dwarves also seem to be overcome with a strange lethergy that many are attibuting to energies in the water flow. Seems I must make right what I once un-did and atempt to get the river back into a river. Construction has begun on what I hope will fill the channels to the lake once I collaspe them into it.
18th of Slate, 128: Vampire Survivor is now canceled, due to the re-imprisonment of Vampire McUrist. Gambling is not encouraged and any bets having been made on this program are considered having been taken at your own risk. I'm not sure how, but we seem to have a dwarf roaming the caverns somehow. Poor sot won't know what to watch for without me there to provide my zoological expertise. May he meet his end quickly and painlessly.
19th of Slate, 128: It looks like one of our miners finally got around to breaching the caverns as I had ordered, now I can finally get this zoological expedition on the road for reals. Somehow an eyeless viper critter has gotten itself into our main fortress and has annouced its presence by noming on Zuglar. Pity he was one of our miners. This is much more exciting than Vampire Survivor though, somebody grab me my specimen jars! To provide a sense of safety for the common I order our milita to defend the burrows. The death count climmbs as a peon and Luzahn have been found dead. As a PSA I must remind all dwarves to be careful on the stairs as they are slippery with the unfortunate demise of many of our fellow dwarfs.
OOC: Even after deaths our population is at 117. this could take a while...

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
YES!Of course not, why would I want to get rid of aboringstable fort suffering from major FPS lag?
It did take like 2 hours of playing to get this far, figured helping us along to a new fort should make things easier.

Well if you REALLY want to kill it, the flooder will do the job. Especially if for some unknowable reason, the floodwaters become tainted by forgotton beast extract.
We have at least 3 with deadly dust or noxious gas. Shouldn't be too hard for a creative fort slayer like yourself.Claspedchurches: This is a mudstone dwarven fortress. Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
Continued Journal of Wookieetank Zoologist Extrodinaire:
Spoiler22nd of Slate, 128: As a PSA I must remind all dwafs to not pet the forgotten beasts. Fellowdwarfs these beasts were forgotten for a reason, and that reason was so you would NOT PET THEM! Leave the interactions to the zoologist and crazy animal nutjobs. THanks to those who have been petting the forgotten beasts, we seem to be down 40 dwarfs in our population. Guess I should go order some coffins made or some such.
23rd of Slate, 128: It seems several of our stray war lions tried to make friends with the FBs and got themselves nommed. Goes to show even zoologists extrodinaire have something to learn fromm forgotten beasts still. war Lions are tasty, although with how useful they are, I'm going to regulate them to a sometimes food. On a completely unrelated note, efforts to follow the cotton candy veins we've discoved have been stymied with the overabundance of warm rock being found.
24th of Slate, 128: Did no one comprehend my last PSA? We're down another 20 dwarfs today. I could go swimming in the ammount of blood pooling around in our main areas. For whatever reason, one of my advisors took the time to inform me that one of the Elk Birds has revereted to a wild state. I care about this why? I mean seriously, all these dwarfs who can't keep their hands off the FBs and keep getting nommed and I'm being disturbed about Elk Birds?
3rd of Felsite, 128: There are now only 27 of us left now, I fear my quest for knowledge is much more dangerous than I had anticipated. Looking through previous overseer notes, I find something about a lever that is to be used in times of danger. Not knowing which lever it is, I set out to pull them all. Surely this will save us from our gory fate.
5th of Felsite, 128: Looks like I found the right one, a huge deluge of water poors out of a giant construction on top of the fort, flooding everything in front of the fort. Thanks to my minions not pulling the lever for the bridge (which I ordered first!) it seems the water is also flooding into the fort. Must I do everything around here?
6th of Felsite, 128: I get reports of 3 dwarfs having been drowned, if this mad device saves us from the critters, it will have been worth it.
7th of Felsite, 128: 5 of our brethern have been reported missing for over a week now. I don't expect we'll be seeing them again.
11th of Felsite, 128: I found a lever today on the south side of the fort that I haven't pulled yet. My curiosity getting the better of me, I command this lever to be pulled.
12th of Felsite, 128: Despite all the madness and tragedy raging all about us, it seems some of our dwarfs are still able to keep up their spirits, as I'm inform that Lor Uzolgusil created a masterpiece today. Perhaps this will bring hope to us in these dire times.
14th of Felsite, 128: Today we are ambushed! If they can make it past the flood and critters, by all rights they deserve whatever they can get their hands on. Wait whats that? Kobolds you say. BWA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! If they even make it to our walls I will be impressed and throw them a trinket or two from the walltop as a reward for having made it that far.
17th of Felsite, 128: Someone tells me a "Vile force of darkness" has arrived today. I'm not sure how more vile or dark you can get than our current circumstances, but I've been surprised before.
26th of Felsite, 128: Several more of our kin have been found dead. We're now down to 10 in number, and I fear the end is near.
6th of Hematite, 128: It is a dark day today, only myself and 1 other remain in these halls of death. Our stairways run with the blood of our kin and the hall stink of their corpses. I'd leave this place, but I feel it is my duty to stay and honor those who have fallen. On closer look it seems to be me and the vampire. This does not bode well.
9th of Hematite, 128: Our resident vampire is throwing a tantrum today. I don't entirely blame him really. Isolated from all others of his kind, deprived of his foodsource for a number of years now, it'd be enough to make me mad too.
14th of Hematite, 128: With a heavy heart I take my leave of this cursed place. Yesterday the vampire quit yelling and throwing things about, so I'm guessing he's calmer now, but I can take no more. If you find this journal leave this place while you still have your life, and hopefully your sanity.
tl;dr: death, death, death, death, afternoon tea, death, death, death, death, death, quick shower, death.
Save
So project flooder was very awesome to behold in action. I was quite impressed with how it looked, and was rather surprised at how awesome something could look only rendered in ascii.
That took much more time an effort than I expected. I won't be playing withwaterrivers anytime soon with community games. On my own however....

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
Rivers are no longer as vital as they once were thanks to modern farming being doable undergroud in soil, but at one point, they were almost required because of how underground farming required mud to be on the stone before it could be farmed.

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
So let's see:
If we want to begin another fortress in the world, what would we do to reduce the framerate issues? I'd think setting off of water would help with that, and maybe some early limits to population.

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
Lower the embark size can help, and fluid movement and temperature is a big hurdle. Unfortunately, the main issue with FPS is still the sheer number of items that build up, and there's little that can be done about that other than selling them.

Re: GitP Dwarf Fortress Succession Game 4: Dwarves on Patrol
As I believe I mentioned upthread, there simply aren't many good sites that have both interesting terrain (much of the availiable terrain is mostly flat woodlands) and nearby enemies. It was fairly difficult to find either.
I'd also prefer a different mod, where the extra races aren't simply carbon copies of goblins, but have their own traits. As I mentioned, I'm partial to Civ Forge, but that's a personal preference and I am by no means wedded to it. If worldgen time is a difficulty, I will generate the world as needed. My computer does a decent job of it.
