Default Trying Encounters for the first time

DM said to make a level 1 character.

He said Drow is preferred but other races are possible, but other races will be considered slaves.

I decided I will make a Drow Bard, and go with the concept that I admire and respect the slave races and value their tales from the surface world. (I'm assuming this is starting in a drow city)

anyhow, I haven't played 4E in a VERY LONG time.

would love some advice on the bard, never played one. I am a bit of a power gamer, but not totally into optimization. I enjoy zany builds. advice would be appreciated.

If you have HotF, the Skald is really cool.

I wish I did, I would love to have more options.

made a virtue of cunning bard and took the advantage of cunning feat.

    cha 20
    int 14

at-wills: viscous mockery & guiding strike
    encounter: blunder
    daily: stirring shout

chain mail, light shield, long sword.

hoping to make them miss by using vicious mockery, then to slide them and my allies around creating combat advantages. then to gang up on them with guiding strike for quick finishes.

Or you could go a bit looney tooney and be a paladin/bard hybrid Drow who sing an epic ballad in full shining plate armor , a well polish shield and a silvered long sword every time he fights (just like in the opra) he/she would look really funny and when blood begin to splash in his armor it would be downright disturbing hehehe >:)

That sounds good. Bard is one of my favorite classes in general.

If you're considering getting a Heroes of... book I recommend the Feywild one, it adds a ton of low-level magic and "mundane" items, a lot of which don't give mechanical benefits but are great for roleplay, some useful themes, and new Barbarian, Bard, Wizard, and Druid subclasses (Summon Nature's Ally!).

The Skald is sort of a wizard/bard controller/leader. You get a spellbook like a wizard does, and most of your spells/powers are activated immediately when you melee-attack and hit an enemy.
