Default Games like doom and wolfenstein.

I am jonesin for a nice 2d/3d first person shooter like doom, doom 2, wolfenstein 3d. There are only two suggestions I won't take and those are hexen and heretic. Anything that is guns or futuristic will do. Any ideas?

Chex Quest 3 - not a very well known game based on the Doom engine, the iwad is available online. Lighthearted shooter, would install it on a kid's computer.

    Blood
    Duke Nukem 3D
    Shadow Warrior
    - those bolded ones are from the Build family of games (as in they run on the Build engine)

Bungie's Marathon is apparently good enough to be included in the mod Samsara which allows you to play Doom levels with the mechanics from a whole bunch of other iconic FPS games depending on the character you choose

Quake is quite a bit advanced beyond Doom and Wolf3D so I'm not sure if you want it and I'm pretty sure actually that you should at least know the game already unless you've been living under a rock. Also, Unreal in a similar vein.

Also, since it's actually Doom's 20th anniversary today, you might as well try to hunt one of the many, many, MANY .wads for the actual Doom game, some of them being really damn advanced, there actually being an annual competition for rating them called Cacowards. In fact, there exist Total Conversions that pretty much create their own game out of the Doom Engine, such as Hacx (though I'm not sure how good that one is)

Final Doom mappack with TNT Evilution and Plutonia is also good and still id Software approved if you care for that.

Also I never heard the expression of "jonesin" but that might be because I'm the monkey and you're the cheese-grater, mate.

My only issue with WADS is, how do i know which of them are good or bad. I can't find much information on each WAD.

Generally the big 32-levels .iwads for DooM are usually very well-done. Even older stuff like Requiem, Alien Vendetta and all the various Community Chests by DoomWorld are all very fun to play.

In addition to what Grif said, you can safely assume that this list has a lot of very palatable .wads. You might want to try out the modern ones instead of starting from the bottom since obviously the art of Doom mapping has really come around since the early days and many people consider the early entrants on that list as not having aged well. Though, I repeat, I am a fan of The Plutonia Experiment.

Oh, and also: Dark Forces series are very good FPS, being some of the best Star Wars games ever made.

Depth Dwellers, for one. Dunno where to find it, though.
Also, Marathon by Bungie, and, to an extent, the original System Shock.

Though the original System Shock plays more like Ultima Underworld. System Shock 2 is a proper FPS(/RPG) though.

Delver is a good Roguelike/Doom-Like with plenty of difficulty you could try and it goes on sale on Steam for pretty cheap. I picked it up for 2 bucks on the autumn sale and it's bound to go on sale in winter too.

    Old FPSes, huh? Let's see...

    Rise of the Triad
Dark Forces - bolded because no one else gave this suggestion yet. It's really good, also Star Wars if that's your thing
Duke Nukem and other games that use its engine (Redneck Rampage, Blood - Shadow Warrior is too tryhard for me though)

THIS. It's the first Doom-alike that I played that featured 3d maps. Everything else was just 2.5d.

Hunt down a game called Painkiller. THAT is what you want if you'd like something classic, yet polished while wearing the coat of new tech.

Well first of all if you already own Doom then you're probably better off with a source port than the raw version of the game because it's just easier to run. Most .wads tend to make use of GZDoom (which is ZDoom with OpenGL) goodies though if you want the most pure vanilla feel you go for Chocolate Doom. Haven't personally used PrBoom+ but some people vouch for it. It'll make it easier on all counts while unlocking spiffy stuff you may or may not want to play with.

Anyway with GZDoom it's easy because you just download a .wad, drag it over the executable of the game and it asks you what do you want to run that with if you have more than one .iwad to choose (so like, Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Chex Quest etc.).

So for instance you download UACLabs.wad, drag it over gzdoom.exe, choose Doom 2, choose New Game and it runs. Don't play UACLabs.wad.

Certain ports/versions (including the vanilla one IIRC) require you to use a -file name.wad command.

This might be a bit more modern than what you're searching, but if you haven't played those yet I'd reccomend Serious Sam: The First Encounter and Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. They very much live up to older shooters in terms of gameplay - you shoot first, then shoot some more and usually don't bother asking questions because there is always more to shoot at :P

Just avoid Serious Sam II, we don't like to speak about that one

Strife is a weird game, with more plot and RPG-ish elements than typical for FPSes of its age, but still not enough to be called an RPG in the vein of System Shock or Deus Ex.

It's unique enough to be worth a try, and a good enough game in its own right.

Yeah Tylorious seems to looking for 2.5D shooters specifically, not just any shooter which is over-the-top action like Serious Sam and Painkiller.

This exactly. But thank you everyone for all your suggestions, I have one more question, is there a way to do all of the .wad stuff on steam?

AFAIK there's not even a problem with running source ports through Steam. Just run the game from the Doom folder with whatever .wads you want.
