Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
I know Durkon is the obvious choice to be the main dwarf since he actually is one, but I think Roy would be a better candidate for Thorin. As well as being the sword-wielding leaders, Roy and Thorin are probably the most serious minded members of their respective groups, and are both motivated by a quest for vengance against an enemy much more powerful than them.
Durkon would be be best suited as Balin, being the leader's wise councilor in one another's group.

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
Yeah, the list seems random because the dwarves really are way too one-dimensional to have enough distinction to fit with the order. -1.

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
The OOTS characters and those in the Hobbit are really too different to draw any meaningful comparisons.
"And yet, will we ever come to an end of discussion and talk if we think we must always reply to replies? For replies come from those who either cannot understand what is said to them, or are so stubborn and contentious that they refuse to give in even if they do understand." - St. Augustine

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
On principle, I feel I should say that similarities between characters are unnecessary; part of the humour can be seeing dramatically different characters play the same role and reacting to the same events (e.g. Haley as Little Red Riding Hood).
In this case, though, I'd have to be inclined to agree. White the OotS can be used to spoof the clichés and conventions of various different genres (and, I think, that's pretty much what the character-swap stories are about), there's not much point doing it for the Hobbit; OotS are already spoofing the whole fantasy-adventure thing. And in any case, there are very few obvious parallels or clear contrasts between the characters.
That said...
SpoilerI think Eugene Greenhilt would make a brilliant parody of Gandalf. He's not just the obvious choice because he's a wizard; think how funny a sarcastic Gandalf would be, constantly bullying Thorin and Co, complaining 24/7, manipulating them for his own ends, and getting distracted every time something more interesting comes up...

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
I think Vaarsuvius is more like legoais, I mean sure both are wizards but personality wise they're a little distant, Gandalf is alot more humble, and quiet while Vaarsuvius and legoais are somewhat arrogant even though they're all intelligent and wise.
Another thing is Gandalf seems to be very mysterious while Vaarsuvius who, even though appears to be very introverted is also extremely laquacious. Since he's older Legoais views his party members as "children" which is similar to Vaarsuvius' perspective with some of his/her party members.
To me Gandalf just appears to be more warm and open to friendship than the other two. I'm not saying per-se gandalf is better than the other two because all of them have their unique and redeeming qualities along with their flaws but it just seems to me Gandalf and Vaarsuvius seems to be oppisites personailty wise.
Also V and L both elves ;).

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
I don't really know what to say, other than...this is quite recognizably a t209 thread. Hobbit simply doesn't make for a good team discussion because its narrative is almost entirely focused on Bilbo, so there's no team of fully fleshed-out characters to compare to the Order.

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
I think V would be closer to Thranduil; rather then Legolas;
The smart elven king; that came marching to Erebor for his part of the treasure;
the insular and mightily arrogant Thranduil that refused to help the dwarven race out of their predicament; out of fear to lose things of his own.
Furthermore, to the OP; comparing Bofur (who is easily one of the 2 most empathic dwarves of Thorins company(maybe Balin beats him out there; and maybe Dori comes close)) to Belkar Bitterleaf is clear nonsense

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
At the end of the last Hobbit movie, near end of battle of 5 armies, Miko shape shifts into a great bear and heroically kills many goblins and wolves. ;P
(In middle earth, heroes kill evil races first, ask question later and no Belkar on Team Good to long term conflict with Miko. Miko/Beorn is less major character that kicks butt in combat, helps the needy, etc.)Last edited by multilis; 2013-01-23 at 05:05 AM.

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
Uh, okay, but literally everything else about Beorn and Miko is completely different. Beorn isn't anyone's vassal and wouldn't take kindly to that sort of authority, acts on his personal judgment and emotions while lacking any sort of strict rules-based code of conduct.

Re: OOTS Characters in Hobbit
Radagast the Brown needs to be Leeky Windstaff.
SpoilerThis is the thief who likes to hoard,
That loves the bard with the puppet Lord
That admires the fighter with the green-hilted sword,
That employs the Wizard, whose bird is ignored,
That has the gender unexplored
That intrigues the Halfling, usually bored,
That slew a mountain of the goblin horde,
That follows the cleric,
That serves the lich,
That seeks the gate,
That guards the snarl,
That lives in the prison the gods built.
guess what I was gone but now I'm back
