There's a difference between a girl dressing masculine and someone that you thought was a girl turning up obviously male :P

Eh, there'll be another time. My family already know about me intellectually, they just haven't actually seen me as a girl yet. It'll happen at some point.

Well, I can't speak for everyone else, Helio, but I have sorted you into the 'girl' category in my head, so even though I 'know' I still would see a girl dressed in a more masculine or tomboyish way.

Not at all. My "rules" are just what I think allies should probably believe, but you don't have to think about them to believe them, or bear them in mind while you're hanging out.

I think the first time rape culture really came to my attention was when I watched Glee. I mean, in the first season (spoiler alert I guess? I mean, Glee is now on the fourth season I think, so) a guy gets a girl drunk to sleep with her. She gets pregnant, has the kid, gives it up for adoption.

They deal with a lot of their relationship issues during the first season in a way that would be fairly realistic for teenagers- except that they never call what happened rape. It's three seasons later and I'm pretty sure they still have never referenced it as rape.

She was unable to consent, he did it anyway (and completely without protection, might I add), and yet he gets high-fives in the hallway (and sympathy when she gives it up), and she gets called a whore and worse. She also gets kicked out of her house.

In-universe, everyone acts like he was just doing what he always does, since he's noted for his sexual "conquests", and she had a moment of weakness. Yeah, a weakness in the form of trusting her boyfriend's best friend.

It's made worse because they're in the Midwest, and as someone from that region, I'll be the first to tell you that we're damned backward in that respect. It is always the woman's fault in some way, and even if he had run her down in broad daylight and violently raped her, she would still face social stigma.

That is an incredibly good point! I haven't seen Glee in ages (I loved the music and anything Brittany said, and Kurt and Kurt's dad, but everything else got on my nerves so I stopped watching) but I remember hoping they dealt with how Quinn was treated. It makes sense to show it happen like that cause that's very realistic, but there should be some acknowledgement that it's horribly unfair.

Hooray for you, Mystic! I'm glad it went well - I know how stressful it can be to do, believe you me! I think the way you went about it was great: giving him a chance to digest the information before getting into a big discussion. Hopefully you weren't sending him to work liek that though; that seems like a good way to tank his productivity.

They'll get to see it sometime. Hopefully you don't mind my saying, but genderfluidity seems like an incredibly awkward identity to have, and I think you're amazing for being able to find such a balance between two parts of yourself that are so incredibly different!

This is actually important. We're a big family here (or at least, I think so), so when there's nothing major going on, we just chat and play silly games. But the main reason we're here is to help, so never feel afraid to ask for it. We can get serious very quickly (well, most of us can)!

On FB: I just keep a sort of... Phantom account? That's probably a misnomer, but it sounds neat so I'm keeping it.

Anyway, I just use my real first name (read: my chosen one :P), a made-up last name and absolutely no personal information whatsoever aside from stuff I have no choice but to have (and those are neither public nor even slightly detailed). There's one picture of me, but it's... Very unlikely that anyone I know would find it, especially considering how vague my location is and my avoidance of friending family members (the ones I tell totally understand).

Despite being an active internet-goer, I'm not really a part of any of the 'net support groups. I find it hard to get comfortable in them. It seems like people either push for you to identify (which I'm not keen on), or they're so sure in themselves that coming in as someone who's still working it all out is daunting.

No, I'm talking about equal consequence. The word "tranny" offends me. It doesn't matter if the person saying it is trans and I appear not to be. I will ask politely not to throw it around. I will then tell them to stop. And then, if they continue to spite me and I'm in a bad mood I will act on it. It doesn't matter what the word is or who says it. Asking for special dispensation because you're gay/straight/black/white/trans/Cis/curious/religious/agnostic is fine, because it's a request. People are allowed to make requests. Creating a price large for yourself and forcing it on other people is not fine. Even If that privilege is being able to refer to yourself via slurs by changing the 'Eric' at the end to an 'a'.

Let's reiterate what happened without the emotive shock word. A student was violently assaulted, developed PTSD, and when they finally sought help, was abused more by the supposed support services than they were by the initial attacker.

This isn't meant to trivialize the initial rape. (Like I said, violent assault and PTSD are pretty nontrivial, with the sex part being the icing on a turd cake.) But focusing on the "rape is bad" part overlooks the part where support systems in general are a mess that needs to be overhauled.

Because honestly, what we need more than medieval punishments for rapists and a lot of hand wringing is to make sure that there are solid support structures in place to help the victims recover their equilibrium. It's a conspicuously absent point from most discussions on the topic.
    Spoiler

Indeed. It's seriously messed-up how obsessed most cultures are with punishment. Like that somehow fixes the wrong or at least diminishes it (while also never being excessive or unnecessary)... Sometimes I wonder how common it would be if more people understood consent properly, if the energy directed and telling people not to rape were used to tell them how not to. Not to say that would stop it all, admittedly. :/

My standard answer to this was to raise one eyebrow, spread my arms out to draw attention to my outfit (funny geeky T-shirt, cargo shorts with pockets full of stuff, plain white crew socks, and sneakers) and respond, "Would you really want to go shopping with someone who considers this to be the height of fashion?" They generally got the hint.

I used to take my sister and her friends shopping before she or they had a car, by which I mean I would drive them to the mall and read in the bookstore until they were done 6+ hours later, and started not-so-subtly bugging me to allow her to update my wardrobe at an early age. After I came out to her, mentioned the above reactions, and said with a completely straight face "And it's true, you know, all gays love shopping. Does this Saturday work for you?" she burst out laughing for a good five minutes or so and had intermittent fits of the giggles for the rest of the day.

We had limited shower space, and one of my roommates (roommate 1) was complaining that the other roommate (roommate 2)'s girlfriend always left her stuff in the shower between visits and took up too much space.

After a bit of evasive mumbling, roommate 2 admitted that they were his toiletries, not his girlfriend's, at which point he got some ribbing for using "girly" products and roommate 1 said "Wait. So you're telling me we have one guy living here who's gay...and we have one guy living here who uses Ocean Breeze shampoo, Strawberry Cream conditioner, floral soap, a moisturizing skin cream, and like three kinds of loofah...and they're not the same person!? Come on, [Dice], you're letting your team down!" I promised I'd ask roommate 2 for tips sometime, then went over to the whiteboard we used for to-do lists and scheduling and wrote down "Saturday afternoon, time TBD: Episode #1, Straight Eye for the Queer Guy." Much amusement was had by all.

A few hours later our friends from next door came over to join us for dinner, and one of them (a very ~fabulous~ bi guy) saw the writing on the board and asked about it. I explained the context, he said "Oh please, [roommate 2] has no taste at all, don't listen to a thing he tells you!" and he went over and underneath the first message wrote "Saturday afternoon, ASAP: Episode #1, Queer Eye for the Queer Guy." He then joked that for the sake of completeness we needed a session of Straight Eye for the Straight Guy, so roommate 2 came out of the kitchen, looked around, gave everyone a thumbs-up and said "Yep, y'all are fine," and went back to cooking dinner.

Yeah, after having read it, I realized that what came across in my paragraph there, was not really what I was trying to say. It isn't that we only have one person out there that will love us, or anything of the sort. But there is someone out there for us. Does that make sense? I have always been of the opinion that love is going to take the reins and you will end up loving whoever you are meant to love, men, women, both, neither.....whatever. My point, which I tent to not make very eloquently, is that love is always a possibility, and it will reach out and punch you right in the face, usually when you are least expecting it. Like you said, much better than I, don't follow the Yellow Brick Road, go down that red one that everyone forgets about....

Good nose, your parent has. Sure it is not them who bears the blood of the dragon's child? Certainly would explain why one would refer to the possibility of there being more than one. Vlad III Dracula's children did not inherit the name, after all.

My parents are almost opposite of that, they would not care that I smelt odd (Other than suggesting I shower) but they both dislike long nails regardless of gender. ^_^'

I have heard of that, but has yet to find the story.

I still need to dig more into the classics (only read Dracula by Bram Stoker so far), but I prefer the vampires of Buffy the Vampire Slayer so far. Still suffer from the odd inability to touch crosses, but entertaining and less childishly illogical than the Voivode of Wallachia was in the book. ^_^

@PairofDice: I rather enjoy shopping, and a few other of the stereotypes, but I guess that's just fine. And I mean sure there are days when I'm lazy and just show up to school in a t shirt and jeans. But there are some lines I will not cross when it comes to being seen in public.

Wait, what does she think a "Dracula" is? Does she mean vampire? Does she mean goth or emo? Do vampires have long nails? I'm confused!

I've heard that a person I know turns out to be trans, but in a kind of adorable move, their significant other also turns out to be trans. So they swapped presented genders, and apparently also discussed just swapping their given names. I don't know if they did or not, I'm not very close to her (I knew her from LARPing ages ago). Unfortunately, I don't know her new name, so I have to refer to her by her old name, which sounds really strange now I know it's wrong cause it's like "[boy-name] has her holidays".

Eh, as long as you point out that both are serious issues, it's not bad that you think that. You're right. Rapists are bad and deserve to be punished, but the administration there caused most of the long-term damage. It's not fair that the rapist got off scot-free, but that the negligent and abusive school workers did too is just as bad.

    Context.
Any thoughts? I usually say "female doctors" or whatever because it sounds better than "women doctors" or "doctors who are women".

Really, it's less empty platitudes and more them not thinking beforehand. Self included! When I was a kid, I imagined wearing a bland grey suit and sitting at the bar of a nightclub, night after night in my forties, waiting for a counterpart of the appropriate gender to be the same. I expected decades of aloneness. And that's not how life is at all, really. So things will get better; what they mean by you'll find someone is "don't worry about it, you'll only stress yourself out and it won't go any faster".

I think I'm bad at cheerin folks up. >_<
I never think people are TRYING to upset me more, it's just that it's not a very helpful thing to say.

It is. Saw her at a convention. There was another man there, I forgot his name. He's an influential member of Autism culture, which is why it's ticking me off that I forgot his name! Anyways, he called people with Asperger's Syndrome "Aspies", which is my go-to name for people diagnosed with AS now. I keep trying to get "Autsies" or "Auties" to work, but I always feel like I'm calling someone Australian.

I should found the country of Autstralia now.

I don't really have a name for normal people. I've tried "generic" and "neurotypical", but it never felt right. The best name just hit me though: John Does and Jane Does. Military terms never fit so right in my daily life.
