    Dear Princess Celestia,

I would like to write and thank you for placing me in charge of this so-called X-com project. However, I cannot help but think that you may have made a minor error in your letter describing the operation. Not that I would ever accuse you of making an error, Princess, I just thought that perhaps somewhere along the line there was a bit of misinformation. Please don't send me to the moon

What I mean here, is that you seem to have confused the terms "crack soldiers" and "rag-tag bunch of misfits." An understandable mistake, I admit. First off, somehow all of my rookies are named "Thanqol." This is both their first and their last names. Due to the difficulty, I have taken to differentiating them by national origin. I suppose I should commend you on this ruse, as they seem to only reveal their true names after a promotion.

That gets me into the first mission. We flew into Egypt with several Thanqols. We weren't sure what to expect, but these small, bug-eyed aliens definitely weren't it. The troops have taken to calling them "sectoids" though I mostly call them cannon fodder. There were only six of the creatures, spread out widely and we made short work of them. French Thanqol was shot in the leg. She will be laid up for 8 days while she recovers. She also had no kills and missed all her shots. I am deeply disappointed in French Thanqol.

All my other troops received a promotion, however. Assault Squaddie Forumexplorer, Support Squaddie Diego Havoc, and Heavy Balmas all seem exceptionally competent at their duties compared to the mass of Thanqols. This is not saying much.

Within a few days, we heard news of alien abductions around the world. The French redeemed themselves by offering me several engineers, so I went to save them, leaving South America and Africa, who I am certain can fend for themselves. I took forumexplorer and Balmas, but left behind squaddie Havoc in order to bring two new Thanqols for training, Russian Thanqol and German Thanqol.

Let me just say, I am in awe of German Thanqol. She eliminated the aliens with ruthless German efficiency, gunning down three all on her own. Russian Thanqol was laughably incompetent by comparison, although he did catch one alien in a grenade blast. Balmas caught two with his rocket launcher, although our science team had some words for him regarding "collateral damage" and something to the effect that "big rigs are not toys for you to blow up." Forumexplorer also conducted himself well, putting a face full of shot-gun rounds into a sectoid at point blank range. I thought I saw him whispering "dodge this!" under his breath.

Both Thanqols were wounded in the line of duty, however, and will be out for a week to recover. They have promoted to snipers, and once they recover, I expect good things from squaddie Gamerlord and Squaddie Sylvestor McFly.

Now, if you'll excuse me, Princess, the situation room is paging me. It seems our satellites have picked up a saucer over Nigeria, and Dr. Valen keeps paging me about some kind of alien containment facility that she wants to build.

    Your faithful commander,
    Anarion

    Edit:

So noted. Are you sure you wouldn't prefer a shotgun though? I really like assaults with shotguns.

Just finished going through "A Bird in the Hoof" again. Interesting that Celestia says "Where on Earth did you get an idea like that?" near the end of the episode. Possibly their planet is also called Earth?

    Dear Princess Celestia,

My gosh, it's been a busy month. And no casualties so far! I'll be the best pony commander ever, you'll see! Oh, but if you could kindly stop making every single Thanqol turn into a sniper, I'd really appreciate it. It was funny when there were 3, it's not funny when Diego Havoc is my only support and I have 5 snipers!

Anyway, we had just sighted a UFO when I left off. We sent out an interceptor and it brought the ship down. A little too violently actually, all the flight computers and the power source were destroyed in the landing, as it turned out. The pilot has received an appropriate thrashing from Dr. Vahlen. That girl is scary.

I dispatched Balmas and Forumexplorer again, along with Kenyan Thanqol and British Thanqol for this mission. Although we captured the ship without incident, Forumexplorer suffered a grave injury. We had cleared out all the sectoids, when some kind of new UFO pilot alien emerged. Undaunted, Forumexplorer sprinted up to it ahead of the squad and unloaded his shotgun. Our combat scanners estimated 5 damage from the shot with 88% hit rate and a 70% chance for a critical shot. Although he did hit, Forumexplorer's gun must have been lacking some oopmh, because he only did 4 damage and ate a plasma shot directly in the chest. Barely hanging on to the edge of life, he unloaded another blast directly into the alien menace and brought it down before collapsing from his wounds. He'll be out until next month, but fortunately, the doctors inform me he'll make a full recovery.

I note here that none of this would have been necessary if Balmas hadn't wasted his only rocket with the fatal words "heads down, rocket off course." Frankly, It's a miracle nopony was killed.

Despite misgivings, I took Balmas on the next mission as well, along with my new assault, Maxtronaut, and two more Thanqols, Kenyan Thanqol and I forget what country Thanqol, possibly a second German. This was a simple abduction in Buenos Aires. I was worried because it was at a gas station, but all was well when a sectoid tried to move up to flank our squad and a recently shot car took that exact moment to explode, setting off a chain reaction that took out the fuel pump and the sectoid. Balmas once again fired his explosives wildly, but this time there was no harm, thanks to Kenyan Thanqol's precise shooting taking out an extra sectoid. We pulled out with 8 dead sectoids and no injuries! Squaddie Maxtronaut was especially effective, dodging several shots and making it look easy. I've promoted him to corporal, along with a few other squaddies that have been doing good work.

I thought we would have a break here, at least enough time to get some arc throwers made to capture the aliens, but no such luck. No sooner did the skyranger get back, than we got a call from counsel of nations (I presume you hoof-picked them yourself, Princess) with a high-priority escort mission. I had been tipped off that this would be a tough mission, so I only took one Thanqol, another Brit. I also brought Balmas (again), Tiki Snakes (the sniper formerly known as Kenyan Thanqol), and Maxtronaut again, since Forumexplorer was still recovering.

Balmas misfired his rocket...again. As I received a new heavy, by the name of Amishpirate as a special counsel recruit after this mission, I have decided to give Balmas some "enforced leave" to brush up on remedial explosives training. Sergeant Amishpirate will be taking his place in future missions.

Fortunately, Tiki Snakes and Maxtronaut saved the day. Between the two of them, they killed 3 thin men and 4 sectoids. Tiki even landed a precision sniper shot on a thin man as it air dropped onto the freeway that was supposed to be our escape route. I could just start hugging him and never stop, but instead I promoted him to corporal and he has acquired a skill called "squad sight." Given his superb long-range talents, I anticipate taking him on every mission henceforth. I also promoted Maxtronaut to sergeant, and thanks to his new lightning reflexes, he will receive the dubious honor of always running in front of the rest of the squad. I have taken the liberty of increasing his life insurance premiums.

The science labs finished the arc throwers just after that, and we launched a satellite over Russia and received our first report from the counsel of nations. They gave me an A and said we had exceeded their expectations. I'd like to extend a hearty congratulations to all squad members. Except Balmas, as I'm just now receiving reports that we'll need to replace the ceiling in the remedial explosives lab. /sigh

    Your faithful commander,
    Anarion

Did it involve soldiers marching in the shade? Actually, while we're on random stereotypical English stuff, can I ask if you can sing the entirety of "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" by memory?

I have no idea what X-Com is aside from it being a game about aliens, and unfortunately I don't have time to devote to playing it as opposed to the other games that take precedence. However, if you need names, feel free to use mine. Make it some sneaky and/or trickstery class if possible.

    Told TvTyrant I'd post this:

    Blood Raven Ravener Commander

It is a well documented fact that a single ravener somehow became a force commander in the blood ravens and made use of a special teleporter pack that had no cooldown and unusually long range as well as no energy cost. In addition, he was able to use the chaos sorceror's doombolt ability effortlessly at extreme ranges without needing to be corrupted by chaos. He was also able to produce multiple rapid warp blasts similar to what a zoanthrope does in addition to his already formidable melee combat prowess with augmented scything talons that could apparently strike without moving. Lastly, he seemed to have a perfect mastery of infiltration such that it required no effort and could not be seen through by any means. Oh, and he was somehow born with 20000 points in all relevant combat abilities and complete invulnerability. That's just an odd quirk :/.

Well... pics or it didn't happen so...
Also, he's part of the White Knights sublegion of space marines that are actual good guys rather than the normal problems that space marines and the empire have. Or so I have fluffed it in my mind. Note the white armor.

    Just an update:

Currently prepping for the ponythread run. Steam has horribly misconfigured Apoc out of the box and it took some wrangling to get the settings I wanted.

However, to my delight, DOSBOX actually supports making movies. I might actually update these on a youtube channel or something.

That's awesome. Would be worth watching as long as the time isn't too long.

Additional names noted for my X-com run as well. That gives me 15 names total now (plus all rookies named Thanqol). If I'm lucky enough to never lose any soldiers, that's probably enough, although if I make it to psionic testing and you all come up negative, I might fire the lot of you.

Actually, I adopt that philosophy for D&D too. If someone is unapologetically evil and doing evil acts I will come down on them mercilessly.

For example, if Kharn the Betrayer was about to say mean things about Fluttershy would anypony anyone do anything about it?

This is wonderful, but I'm a little concerned that I am your only support and I haven't been in any missions since my promotion. Waiting until the squad size upgrade before worrying about saving people?

Now that all your rookies are "Thanqol Thanqol" it reminds me that in my own XCOM game (nearly complete) I managed to get a Chinese soldier rolled with both names the same. Poor Cheng Cheng. I wish you'd lived long enough to get a nickname.

Especially if your nickname ends up being "Fedora".

Hmm, that's a thought. Anarion, how are you handling nicknames? Are you going to leave us with what the game decides on, or will you give us new ones?
