Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
I vote
1. Affiliations
2. Relationships
3. Gear
4. Reputations
She shouldn't need many reputations, but if she's leading a horde made by uniting 7 different tribes using political marriages, she's going to need some serious affiliations.
Edit: I forgot to second the notion for spoils of war.Last edited by Randomatic; 2012-11-11 at 12:40 PM.

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
So, here's what we're looking at.
1. Affiliations
2. Reputations
3. Relationships
4. Gear (including buying something from the Spoils of War list)
When I get back to my book, I'll figure out how many resource points that allocates towards the categories, and give some options for each category's expenditures.
Meanwhile, who's interested in running through the character process again for someone different? I'm taking votes now on which character stock (Man, Elf, Dwarf, Orc) to use, although I'd prefer to show off a new stock (Man or Elf) before doing another Dwarf or Orc path.Last edited by CarpeGuitarrem; 2012-11-12 at 02:34 PM.

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
I'm definitely interested in another character, if that happens, I would vote for Elf.
A gracious thanks to Bradakhan for the avatar, and Time Walk's card artist, Amy Weber.

Another character would be awesome, but I'd vote Man. It sounds like there are a truly ridiculous amount of lifepaths to choose from, and that would be interesting.

I get Xefas's joke despite not being old, largely because my parents are old. Also, I vote Elf.

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
Voting for new character stock will still be open, but it looks as though Elf is carrying it. Anyhow, with our current resource spread, we're looking at 194 points. I've chosen to divvy that up into 80, 50, 34, and 30 to the four categories respective to votes (Affiliations, Reputations, Relationships, Gear).
I'll be trickling down unspent points.
So, Affiliations! There's a few options we could choose from...
Option 1
Boost your Great and Black Orcs affiliation to 3D, granting you power on a massive scale
Gain a 2D affiliation (a group that's large, regional, or expansive)
Gain a 1D affiliation (a small, local or specialized group)
Option 2
Take some other affiliation at 3D (I'm gonna require us to take a 3D affiliation for Great One 3x...I mean, you can't get that high without having that much power to throw around at the ruling level)
Gain three different 1D affiliations, along with 1D Great and Black Orcs
Option 3
I don't like either of those options
Also, give some suggestions as to what groups should go with affiliations. If we get enough bandwagoning, we won't need a vote. Remember: each affiliation is tied to a lifepath (Born Great -> The Rites -> Follower -> Named -> Great One)

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
I'd say Option 1. for the 2D, could she have a large group of Swissles tied to her that she uses almost as an elite guard, like the Roman Praetorian Guard (going with the whole Orc Caesar thing), but with wolves? Or would that just be 1D? Or am I misunderstanding the whole Affiliations thing?

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
Yeah, this. I mentioned it once in the thread, but that may have gotten buried beneath stuff.
Having an affiliation would allow you to pull strings and call in favors from the group, but not reliably carry around a band of fighters. Having a 3D affiliation with the Swizzles means that you can get a bunch of them to join up with you for a battle, but then they have their own businesses to attend to.
Purchasing said Swizzles as "gear" means that you are their business. They are in your pay (you continuously make a Resources test at regular intervals, I'd say) and will always be around.
I will check the books but I suspect that if we axe a 1D Affiliation, we'd have enough money to buy up gear and stuff.

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
Gear is gear isn't it? You could have a relationship with the top dude of a group or an affiliation to help you find helpful members of the group but I don't think you can have folks on hand.
The major affiliation gives you 3 dice to find the members of the group that can help you.Mannerism RPG An RPG in which your descriptions resolve your actions and sculpts your growth.

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
This is an exception, I believe; having a Clan or a Warband is explicitly called out as being buyable in the gear list. Basically, the Dwarves and Men have property, the Orcs have warbands, the Elves have magic stuff.

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
Although Burning Wheel lists clans and warbands as gear, it says to purchase them as affiliations. 1D is a minor/typical clan, 2D is a powerful clan/horde it gives as examples.
It says reputation asserts position within the warband (3D for boss, I guess). So no buying people as gear. THe who's who in the Warband will be down to Circles, which means possibility of failing and therefore the enmity clause :).
Therefore my vote:
3D The Great and Blacks Who Have Been Born To Rule
2D The Mighty Greldit Clan
1D The Servants of Blood And Night

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
I vote Option 3
Affiliations
1. "The Circle of Shadow and Flame. Leaders of the Clans of the Festering Swamp and Howling Wood." 1D Great and Black (free)
2. "The Indomitable Black Legion. Scourge of the enemies of our hatred. May our goblins feast on man-flesh!" 3D Black Legion
3. "The Great Greldit Clan. Our mighty fist, and spreader of the ashes of all that oppose us!" 2D Orc Horde
The remaining points trickle down.
From the impression given by the Lifepath names, it seems dark descriptive names are appropriate.
Edit:
Affiliations are mostly about the size, and power to a degree, of the organization. A Praetorian Guard would be a 1D, unless they were exceptionally well trained. Also, larger Affiliations incorporate smaller ones in them, so by having an entire horde, it could also include an elite guard.Last edited by Randomatic; 2012-11-14 at 12:40 PM.

Re: Let's vote up another Burning Wheel Character!
"Circles" is an abstract stat which represents your character's ability to hunt down and negotiate their way to a helpful NPC. You can only circle up an NPC whom you might've had contact with via one of your lifepaths. So, our orc would be able to circle up other fellow participants in The Rites, for example. We'll get to the Circles stat later.
(Fun fact: when you fail a Circles test, the GM invokes the enmity clause--you find an NPC who's either hostile to you or who will charge some sort of price for helping you.)
