I'd just gotten kind of bored with Dredmor, but VS Let's Plays sounds interesting. Put me on the list, or however this will happen.

I've beaten Medium with a rogue and a warrior, and was looking to find a good rogue/mage build to try Hard with. But I don't think I could even play the game without taking Archaeology.

I'll be happy to try out the contest as well - and themed builds are a nice idea.

I used to feel the same way, but I had a brief run with the beta of the next patch, in which It Belongs in a Museum gets severely nerfed, and though I have reverted back to the old version due to some stability issues I've tried to back away from my Archaeology addiction - and I haven't really missed it all that much.

I usually end up running big game hunter over Archaeology most times, particularly when using melee characters. On top of granting bonus xp and a large amount of lutefiskable items from mobs, the lure ability not only draws an enemy towards you, but greatly debuffs any mobs caught in its area of effect.

Yeah, I've switched to BGH as my goto XP-booster as well, it has the additional advantage that you don't really need to put points in it early on (or indeed at all, if your other skills are more important). Extra Enemy Dodge Reduction isn't bad either.

Would Hunter + Archaeology create some kind of massive super-XP boost? Would that be worth it?

Also, what's everyone's favourite way of snagging those artifacts only accessible by teleport?

Until they get around to nerfing Belongs In A Museum more, you probably won't even notice the contribution of Big Game Hunter past the first five or so levels; the ability to sacrifice a piece of jewelry or a good-but-not-better-than-what-have weapon for thousands of experience kind of dwarfs the extra 4-8-whatever per Animal kill you get from BGH.

Favorite? Psionics. Shove pushes them off their islands and busts through destroyable walls, is targetable anywhere, and is dirt cheap to cast with no cooldown. (Have I mentioned before? Psionics solves *everything*, it is the cheesiest skill tree.)

Magical Law is probably the easiest, since it solves it neatly with the 1st level power. Psionics and Artful Dodger are the other obvious solutions.

There are also a number of other skills that can push stuff off islands, such as the second skill from Rogue Scientist.

A handy wand can also substitute for psionics, as far as I recall. Good if you don't have any appropriate skills (even though it is generally advisable to include some kind of teleport in your build eventually).

The one thing I would NOT recommend is trying to use Froda's Jump Discontinuity from Mathemagic (or another random teleport). It requires inhuman levels of patience and luck, so only attempt it if it's a really, really, really good item

Psionics is pretty damned OP. But I did make the mistake of taking it as the only offensive skill for a mage once. setting everything on fire one at a time became very tedious. it worked, but I gave up on that...

The mace skill active attack can also knockback items off of their little islands.

Well, my default chargen method these days has been to load up on tons of mods, and then hit random when making characters. So I've played around with quite a few, dropped those that didn't work properly or were just silly balance-wise, and generally had fun with it.

Essense's skill mod package is pretty solid (and popular enough that a few of them were ported into the main game package.) Bushido and QiGong are particularly helpful for Warrior builds, both with good skills and in making the actual playstyle a little less boring. I also use Fax's Summoner skill (not so much for the actual skill, it's a little finicky and there's some bugs that are preventing it from working the way it should.. but it also adds new 'Diggle God' statues to the upper floors that let you get some really nice buffs to help you when you need them.) That plus the More Dred item pack is my main set.

Anything by Essense, Roguish Renovator, or Fax Celestis should be worth giving a try, and if you click on into their own Collections to see what they like you'll probably find some other neat stuff.

Just something I've been to ask; are we going to use No Time To Grind mode? And speaking of it, are there any particular disadvantages/advantages to using NTTG? Any character types that might be better/worse off in it?

    Crafters and archaeologists.

There are less drops of artifacts and just stuff in general. Also slightly less XP whatever the game may claim. In general the less you want gear the better.

Was wondering if you were going to be able to get pairings up today. I've been looking forward to this all week, and after how work went yesterday some Dredmor madness would be a great way to make this week better.

    The Challengers:

    Corlindale
    Cogwheel
    Wookietank
    Tyckspoon
    Mistcast Mage
    Tectonic Robot
    Kesnit
    Science Officer
    Succubus
    Reynard

    The Rules:

    * Each challenger will progress through the dungeon, taking occasional screenshots and commenting on their game.
    * The aim of the challenger is to outlast their opponent - first one to die loses. Completing the dungeon is a secondary goal.
    * The challenger will pick their skills as they wish but must have some skills relating to the theme. For example, if the theme is "explosion", a challenger may wish to go with promethian Magic or a throwing build that uses explosives made from alchemy.
    * Themes will be decided by the audience in addition to settings such as NTTG, difficulty or 15 level dungeons.
    * Challengers shall be 1 v 1 and selected via dice roll initially, or until all possible match ups have been selected.
    * Snarkiness between challengers is actively encouraged.

    Timing:

    * Each challenger should look to do a level a day. If a challenger falls, the victor can proceed at a faster pace (remember that other people will be waiting to play).

    Themes:

    * When choosing a theme, try to be as open minded as possible. "Drinking" is a good theme, "swords and shields only" is a boring theme.
    * Challengers will be asked to explain the reasoning behind their build and will be pelted with rotten fruit if they've only gone with a very minor reference to the theme.

    Voting:

    * Each person can put forward a theme suggestion but must vote for 2 themes.
    * Votes must also include difficulty and additional settings.
    * For example:

    Theme: "Darkness"
    NTTG: Yes
    10/15 levels: 15
    Difficulty: Going Rogue
    Voting for: "Bacon", "Darkness"

Once votes have been tallied, the dice will roll and the players will be selected.

    Let the voting begin.

Is it too late to make some suggestions?

One: Make a new thread, or, better, rename this thread to better indicate that there competitive let's playing is going on.

Two: I, for one, would prefer voting on skills, and maybe some other stipulations, rather than nebulous "themes". But hey, whatever people like.

More Fun* things you can try:
-Firing a BMD at someone standing next to you
-Putting a lutefisk cube inside a lutefisk cube
-Typing Digle Hell into the arcane teleporter as your destination
    -Stealing from Brax
    -Drinking unidentified potions**

*Disclaimer/warning: Fun does not mean safe or beneficial to the well being/good health of your character and may in many instances shorten one's lifespan.

    **Results may vary
