Post So...any Hip-Hop fans here? At all?

I'm guessing that there are few hip-hop fans on here, but I'm curious to see if there are any, and if so, what their opinions on it are.

For me, 2012 has been one of the best years for the genre since the 90s. 2011 ended with me beginning to abandon rap. It'd gotten...well...bad! But this year there's been so much success!

Lupe Fiasco abandon the fiasco (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?) that was Lasers and returned to his original style and flow, producing a brilliant, socially conscious album. Nas, one of the kings of rap and the author of what many consider the greatest rap album of all time (Illmatic) made his triumphant return, with what is arguably the best album he's released since Illmatic.

In the world of underground hip hop, Brother Ali and Vinnie Paz both released very well received albums. Tech N9ne flooded the market with EPs, although they weren't as good as much of his earlier work. Macklemore also killed it in his debut album, and produced a hip hop anthem for gay rights movements.

Even the more mainstream rap, which had become SO stale in 2011, has improved a bit. MGK's debut wasn't fantastic, but it's definitely worth a listen, and Rick Ross's new album wasn't anything new, but it was also OK.

And of course, there's Kendrick Lamar, who's sophomore album is already being considered one of the all time greatest rap albums.

So what are other people's thoughts on the genre?

Not a huge fan of the genre, but there's no genre that I dislike entirely. In the 80s I dug Run DMC (and still do on occasion), and after the film Ghost Dog, came to appreciate the brilliance of the RZA. I dig a lot of instrumental hip-hop (and where it crosses over into trip-hop), DJ Shadow, Dr. Octagon, etc. I liked Deltron 3030, and have a couple of Kid Koala's records. Lots of the Ninja Tune stuff is cool (though that's only occasionally hip-hop based). A local DJ/producer used to trade mixes with me; he'd give me an underground hip-hop mix, I'd give him a noise/experimental mix, so I've heard a lot of the local/underground scene from around 2003-07.

So anyway, to answer your question, versed, but not WELL versed. I'll have to check out some of your recommendations!

I am incredibly ignorant on the subject in general, but I've been dabbling, mostly with stuff mentioned by JoshL there (some of which I suspect are rather obvious, perhaps?)
Specifically, Deltron 3030, Dr Octagon, Several of MF Doom's aliases, even a bit of snoop and public enemy. Other than that, I rarely encounter much outside of gorrillaz collaborations and so on, especially modern stuff. But then, I don't tend to encounter much modern music, mostly stuff I seek out myself or have recommended so that's not surprising.

I'm also rubbish at keeping track of who is what genre, so there's that too. For example I'm honestly not sure if Janelle Monae would count as thread relevant. She's great regardless, but the genre I mentally fit her into is more specifically "Music about cool scifi stuff", alongside Deltron 3030 than anything.

Edit : Links added. Even to Janelle, who is probably not what we're supposed to be talking about.

Sage Francis is the only rapper/hip-hop artist I really care for to be honest. A few songs here and there by others but nothing in a broad swath.

I like some skip-hop and some British stuff (do The Streets and Scubio Pip(sp?) count?), and appreciate some rap for the poetry. Hip-hop is a genre I wouldn't say I like as a whole ( not like I'll say "I like alternative electro-dance-pop"), but there are bits and pieces I like well enough.

    edit: And chap-hop, of course!

I love hip hop but I disagree with almost everything you just said. 2011 was fantastic, the 2010s on the three years we've got so far are already better than every other decade. The current generation of rappers is doing more for the genre than a cursory glance would ever suggest. I'm talking people like Kanye West, Lil B, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Curren$y, Big KRIT, Lil Ugly Mane, Main Attrakionz, A$AP Rocky, Riff Raff, Clams Casino, Chief Keef, Lil Reese, Lil Durk, Kitty Pryde, Azealia Banks, Macklemore, Drake, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Action Bronson, Earl Sweatshirt, Killer Mike, ScHoolboy Q, J. Cole, Das Racist, Joey Bada$$, Rick Ross, Juicy J, Smoke DZA, Future, Shady Blaze, Spaceghostpurrp, Yelawolf, Machine Gun Kelly, Young Jeezy and a few more I can't remember.

I certainly do not mean preachy conscious rappers like Donald Glover or Lupe Fiasco too wrapped up in their own sanctimony to see the irony of their behavior. I really can't stand Lupe Fiasco. Both the man and his music. I expect people like Chief Keef or Kanye West to, respectively, act like tactless pillocks or throw tantrums but they're not trying to "teach" or "enlighten" us. When Lupe Fiasco throws a hissy fit and demands his fans boycott a publication that gave him a negative review or threaten to retire because someone he criticized has the gall to respond to him I roll my eyes. It's hard to take the insight of this petulant primadonna seriously anymore, not that his insights were especially interesting or fresh to begin with.

Well...to begin with, excepting the Lupe Fiasco comments, you didn't really disagree with anything else. You just listed a bunch of rappers. And yes, my list was far from comprehensive. J. Cole, Schoolboy Q, Big K.R.I.T., A$ap Rocky (and the rest of the A$ap Crew really), and Yelawolf should all probably have been included in the OP.

Now, you also listed some rapper's names that made me go Lil B is widely recognized as the worst rapper alive, Wacka Flocka Flame and Young Jeezy are both just awful and nothing special or unique, and Gucci Mane tattooed an ice cream cone on his cheek.

Now...you also complained that Lupe Fiasco is too "preachy," which honestly is a fair critique of him. But then you said to listen to Kanye West instead...because according to you, he's not preachy? Now, most of his so called preachy songs are religious in nature, so I won't get into that for fear of breaking forum rules, but clearly you have NOT listened to the College Dropout if you think Kanye can't be preachy.

Widely recognized as the worst rapper alive? By whom? Youtube commenters? Amongst the circles I hang around with Lil B is actually considered one of the greatest rappers alive. Critics have praised releases like I'm Gay and in particular God's Father to the high heavens, the latter being called by a few as "one of the greatest hip hop mixtapes of all time". Rappers like Kendrick Lamar, Big KRIT and Lupe Fiasco are all on record as being vocal fans of the guy, Lupe himself calling the I'm Gay album a "masterpiece" (not that that's a compliment, given my earlier comments on the dude).

Then there's Flocka, Jeezy and Gucci. I suspect you don't like trap, and that's fine. Trap can be a hard genre to love. I love it but it's one of those things that, if people said they hated it I'd be cool because I can see that. But don't underestimate Flocka and Gucci, they (alongside producer Lex Luger) are pretty much responsible for making trap the powerhouse that it is today. Flocka's "Flockaveli" album is considered a modern producer classic (but again, that's more Luger's victory). Not sure I see why the ice cream tattoo is relevant either.

Let's assume that College Dropout alone is enough to incriminate Kanye, even on that album the preachiness was not what defined the lyrics. It was there, certainly, but nowhere near as prominent or sanctimonious as Lupe's. I gotta say though, it's really refreshing and fun to have an intelligent conversation about hip hop with someone on the net. It's great, thanks!

Eh. The ice cream tattoo was me making fun of him. But yeah, trap isn't really my thing I guess. I listen to it sometimes when I'm with my friends, but in general I don't think it's too good. I respect you enjoying it though.

I still disagree with you on the whole Kanye thing. I get you saying that Lupe is too preachy. That totally makes sense to me. The Kanye comparison just isn't a good one, I don't think.

The 50-page limit on thread length prevents me from typing Wu Tang as many times in a row as I want to type Wu Tang. I like a lot of other classic/old-school East Coast stuff pretty well, some of the newer underground stuff (most of Odd Future, a decent portion of Rhymesayers, Cannibal Ox, MF Doom's various projects and aliases, etc.), and have a soft spot in my heart for Snoop.

Most other forums I visit have a Lil B thread that is so populated and active that in all cases it rarely leaves the first page. I'm kinda hoping to recruit enough into the flock here to have that happen here. It's certainly more deserving of a dedicated thread than My Little Pony.

    That's the dream.

I can bring out the big guns if you would like. The ones I linked were not "the big guns" (okay, maybe "I'm God" and "The Bible" was), they just happened to be good tracks with music videos. I have album tracks that blow that stuff out of the water. Figured I'd ease you into it. You just gotta ignore his party tracks. It gets easier.

EDIT: Oh yeah! And "Lone Warrior" is pretty outstanding.

Why do you think Lil B is more deserving of a thread than MLP? A controversial, niche MC with a cult-ish fanbase versus a controversial, niche tv show with a cult-ish fanbase; don't see why one is more deserving of a thread than the other, especially on this forum, given its demographics.

Well, Moff, as any man learns, at a certain point in his life, the intrinsic value of all things is measured in swag/minute. Li'l B is among the first auteurs in human culture to create a work of art more objectively perfect than "Once a Jolly Swagman," the previous pinnacle of a swag-poor species.

There isn't a clear difference, really. The easiest way to think of it is hip hop as the genre as a whole, and rap as specifically the vocals of hip hop. Other times, rap is used to refer to the entire musical genre while hip hop is used to refer to the entire culture: MCing, DJing, graffiti, break dancing, etc.

I always understood it as kind of a hybrid of those two definitions, with rap solely referring to the vocals, while hip hop refers to the totality of hip-hop culture, including rapping. I guess what I mean is always put DJs within the purview of hip-hop, rather than rap, but would still include b-boys within hip-hop. That said, there isn't a clear, distinct delineation or "right answer."

Practically, if you use the two interchangeably nobody will think less of you. Even hardcore fans rarely differentiate between them

Well...trying to keep this thread alive. I just discovered a rapper named Anilyst (specifically his song "Triple Threat"). You can download it for free on his website. It's really, really good, but I will say that it's not all that creative. Nothing revolutionary or brilliant, just really good modern hip hop, I guess. Give it a lesson if you've been following this thread.

As long as we're linking free music you guys should get Lil B's God's Father mixtape. Potentially his magnum opus but be warned, it's two hours long so I would recommend listening to it in one sitting only for those with the stamina. But other that it's great, it's more consistent than any two hour album has any right to be (let alone free mixtape.)

Definitely making my AotY list in December. You guys should listen to it. It's cool.
