Mab's flight takes her directly into the path of a few of the stinging clusters of flying ice, but for the most part she escapes unscatched thanks to her thick scales and quick maneuvering skills.

As the dragon zooms into the inn, through the swinging, western style half-doors, she'll see that most of the inhabitants are sitting semi-calmly at their tables. Most flinch every time a random ice object hits the roof of the tavern, but since this is a two story building, they're confident about their odds of not being smashed to bits. Most are sipping at pints of ale or harder spirits to settle their nerves, and a few industrious souls seem to have darted out and grabbed a couple of the larger hunks of ice from the street and are selling off broken bits of frozen rabbit and miniature chair to cool the drinks of anyone willing to listen for a few silvers apiece.

No one seems too concerned that a dragon just tumbled into this particular tavern, and it's immediately apparent why. The races and cultures these patrons come from are about as diverse as it gets, and there are even a few things that would be traditionally considered "monsters" sitting/hovering/lounging next to what would normally be their prey. Mongrelfolk are the only thing that passes for a "majority" but that's only because there's three of them playing cards at a table closest to the door.

    Everyone Else

Periwinkle's quick leap through the darkness saves him from being struck by a falling icy cantaloupe that disturbs the thick smoke he left behind almost instantly, though he's still peppered by icy shards that remind him not to dally overlong. The nearest cover similar to this awning that's on its way to the inns won't provide much shelter, as Periwinkle can see it already has quite a few chunks taken out of it by hailstones. However, if he wanted to reach it, it's about sixty feet away from where he is now. He probably has a straight shoot to the inns if he wanted to risk being exposed though.

Orpheus is delayed quite a bit by his stumble, and only manages to make it a short distance towards safety. He may have been better off taking shelter in one of the buildings off to the side of the road, flimsy though they may be, but if he can survive out here a bit longer it shouldn't matter overmuch. That could be a problem, considering how much of the disturbingly glass-like ice is sticking out of his body at the moment.

Cassidy and Lyzper, meanwhile, manage to make the most distance towards safety of all the bipedal members of the group, and in another few seconds they'll have made it all the way there unless they're otherwise delayed. Like the rest, they can feel the sting of the shards lightly penetrating their limbs and torsos, but they're able to avoid the brunt of it.

Orpheus hisses in pain as bits of ice bite into his skin. He had to find cover quickly. The elf tries to cast a spell, but another jagged piece of ice strikes him, breaking his concentration. He mutters a curse in bastardized Elvish, angered over the wasted spell, and runs for the nearest bit of cover, abandoning the idea of getting to the tavern.

The situation could be better. Dashing across the distance will prove difficult. He considers the pros and cons of moving from cover to cover. Sticky. In more ways than one. His body isn't going to hold up forever against the damage. He attempts to get the guard's attention and indicates the terrible weather. Should the guard pay him attention, he will, through gesture, see if the guard has any means of helping him to the nearest inn.

Soon she'd be able to start her first real adventure and then- wait, what was that sound?

Though some of the races surrounding Mab are unrecognizeable without further scrutiny, those are in the very slim minority. Mab can see a mephling chatting it up with his kobold barmaid, and a pair of raptorans snuggle against a back wall, giggling and fairly drunk. Before the narrator has time to describe any more races however, Lyzper and Cassidy crash into the inn, bloodied and covered slowly melting ice. The mongrelfolk at the front table wince a bit at their state, but don't actually get up or offer to help.

The bartender spits something fragrant into a spittoon. He looks to be human and fairly young at that, but his eyes are pale yellow, "New in town? What can I get ya?"

    Moments before, with the rest

The whistling Cassidy heard turns out to be a rather large seagull made of ice crashing into her shoulder, just as Lyzper takes a mindflayer bust to the base of his tail. Both are nearly brought to their knees by the blows, but they will thankfully make it inside the inn they saw Mab disappear into mere moments before.

Periwinkle will find his conversation partner to be quite recalcitrant to pick up his own end of the conversation. In fact, he doesn't move at all from where he stands and doesn't even acknowledge that Periwinkle was trying to get his attention. How rude of him.

    Orpheus

As he slips inside the unlocked shack, Orpheus can see it already has a few dents in its thatch and wood ramshackle roof, but it seems to be holding for now. If it takes a solid hit from a larger hailsculpture he'll be in trouble, but he might just be able to last out the storm as it is if it's a short one.

The inside of the hut is fairly bare, with just a pile of straw to serve as a bed, two crates stacked in a corner, and a small cookfire in the center of the room. The door he passed through looks like the only entrance, and it's a set of thin planks stretched across two boards that are held onto the frame by leather hinges. It would in no way keep the draft out on a cold night, but between it and the daub and wattle walls Orpheus is protected from any further splinters flying through the air.

The elf let out a sigh. What a dismal place this was. It seemed he was stuck here until the storm blew over, unless he wanted to risk a run to more secure location. With nothing better to do, Orpheus placed the trinkets he'd picked up on top of the stacked boxes and began the working of spell to identify what magic was on them, if any.

Though a few heavy thuds disturb him, it's not enough to break his concentration on the spell without the shards to distract him, and he can clearly make out two distinct yet faint auras among the three obvious talismans she can see on the crates. It appears that at least one of them was either never magical or has had its magic expire long enough ago that it doesn't register under his spell's detection.

However behind those two auras, each solid lump of hail outside the hut also glows faintly, the auras on those ice sculptures diminishing even as he focuses on them. There are only a few in range of his spell that still retain their magic by the time he focuses on them sufficiently to get an idea of their type.

(You can roll spellcraft once for each aura if you want to know what school of magic is involved in the two working talismans. You can also roll for the 3 ice sculptures outside the hut if you're curious.)

He pulls out ten gold and tosses it gently in his hands a few times, eliciting a wonderful clink clink clink. Hopefully the guard will catch his meaning. Will you help if I pay you?

For a brief moment, Lyzper spots the icy projectile falling from the sky and in that moment he is certain that this is it. This is how he dies. Not peacefully in his bed, nor in the midst of a battle. But here, in this gods-forbidden molted toe-scale of a city. Crushed by a statue of a squid.

There was no justice in life.

And then the impact comes, smashing into the base of Lyzper's tail. The lizard-folk wheezes in pain. His sight blurs and is replaced with lightly wafting stars that burst only to be replaced with more, smaller stars. In this moment of blindness he trips on a loose cobblestone, falling to his knees and barely avoiding getting impaled by a spike of screwdriver-shaped ice.

    Ow.

Somehow between then and six seconds later, Lyzper finds himself slumped in a chair near the bar of the inn, his tail stretched across another. Even more incredibly, there's a mug of mead in his hands that's already half empty.
    Funny old world, that.

Sipping his mead, Lyzper glances around. Hopefully Mab had made it here too, or else he'd have to go back out and look for her.

"Ahhh!!!" Cassidy cries out as the pain sears through her body, causing her vision to blur. She staples forward, nearly collapsing until her hand suddenly can feel the wall of the tavern.

Feeling a sense of relief, she enters the tavern as her hand reaches down to touch the belt which is tightly drawn around her waist. Feeling it's enchantment doing it's magic the ugly bruise left on her shoulder by the seagull starts to fade a bit.

But she was an adventure now, she would have to expect these sort of things to happen. With that in mind she smiles weakly at the other patrons and takes a seat besides Lyzper. "Do you have any wine?" She asks the bartender. She knew she was supposed to save money but after taking a seagull to the shoulder, it felt like she really needed some liquid comfort.

He manages to easily divine that the auras on the two active talismans are that of abjuration magic, which would make sense if they were to ward off mind and body altering magics. The fractured sculptures beyond the walls are all radiating faint auras of conjuration, which seems to indicate they were magically created above the city before being dropped, which would explain why there were no clouds for them to fall from.

    Periwinkle

Finally the guard turns towards the small warforged, speaking through the grate of its helmet as it sees the coins.

"Bribing a guard is a punishable offense. You will be escorted to the guard house for processing. Submit, or you will be detained." Well that's not at all promising. Worse yet, more of the shards pepper Periwinkle's wooden flesh as he stands around trying to communicate with the guard, though his place under the awning still keeps him safe from direct hits.

He turns to Mab even as he fishes a small book from his pocket and starts flipping through it to a section he's got dog-eared, reading aloud from the passage he finds there in halting draconic.

<My apologies, we are not a brothel, we have no virgins on hand.> He smiles broadly, perhaps not fully understanding what he just said.

Her voice is much different when speaking in Common - one could describe it as being either dignified or snobby, high-pitched and feminine despite her large form.

Lyzper snickers as the barkeep reads from his note book. "He thinks you want a whore," he tells Mab in Draconic.

He leans back, wincing at the pain shooting from the base of his tail. He reaches down to an ornate belt buckle, tapping a clawed finger against one of the three barely glowing turquoise gems set in the etched silver. The gem winks out, fading to a dull sapphire. Lyzper closes his eyes, sighing softly as the healing magic worked it's stuff. The bruising heals, the cuts close and mend, and the pain fades to nothingness. In a matter of moments, it is as if Lyzper as never struck by an air-born cantaloupe at all.
    Much better.

With a flick of his now-restored tail, Lyzper send the chair it's resting on away and wraps the bulk of it under his own. He leans forward to rest his elbows on the bar, keeping one eye on Mab while rolling the other around the bar. Huh. Looks like Periwinkle hadn't made it. Lyzper took a sip of his mead as he continued to scrutinize the other patrons. He hoped the little warforged found somewhere safe to wait out the storm.

"So," Lyzper speaks up when his eye finally rolls back over Cassidy. She did seem to be awfully... naive, but that was hopefully just a side effect of her inexperience and would wear off after a day or two. And since it looked like she'd be sticking around, it'd be useful to get to know her. "What's your story?"

Cassidy looks thoughtfully at the barkeeper while mentally making the math. She still had one hundred and twenty six gold pieces but she had started out at over two hundred gold pieces. That mean she had almost spend half of her budget already and then she needed to feed Snarx too...

But then again, this was a special occasion and since the adventure had started she'd be rolling in gold, just like a real dragon. She giggles a bit to herself at that mental picture before replying. "One bottle then please." Already picking up the gold from the green bag hanging over her should, placing it on the counter.

Then she turns her attention to what she assumed to be her new companions with a smile. Mab seemed a bit rude, but she was sure the dragon would seem nicer once she got to know her better.

The Lizard man though... what was his name again? "Ah... I'm Cassidy Moonheart, but you can call me Cass if you like." She replies with a smile. "I'm from the white forest in the north and I'm here since I heard there was work for adventurers around here. I'm a sorceress." A basic enough story and she felt pride that she had tried to keep eye contact with the lizardman during the entire introduction even if she hadn't met any of his kind before.

That wasn't exactly what he had intended.... Oh well. Plans change. Rolling with the changes is crucial to staying alive in any situation, of course. But how to handle this one? More money won't work. Killing the guard would be the most straightforward solution. But that would likely make things more messy down the road. Which leaves subterfuge and escape.

First a clever diversion is in order. Periwinkle throws his hands up in shock and surprise and points behind the guard in a dramatic fashion. Whether or not the guard actually turns around, he throws another pellet at the ground and vanishes in a cloud of smoke. While invisible, he ducks around the corner into the alleyway and finds a good spot to hide.

The guard doesn't fall for the distraction, but Periwinkle disappearing in a cloud of smoke seems to take him completely by surprise as the warforged ducks around the corner and out of sight. In terms of hiding places, there's a midden heap piled outside the back corner of one of the huts, or Periwinkle could keep running before his invisibility runs out and look for more beyond that.

The guard doesn't seem to be following, probably because his quarry is invisible. He is looking around methodically though.

Last round that you need to make a reflex save. The storm is over.

    Orpheus

The "nicest" working trinket is a dark green glass bead surrounded by blue feathers on a brass chain. The other two, including the useless one, are tucked away safely.

When Orpheus looks out through the crack in the door, he'll see that the storm has passed and all the ice is laying in the street, melting steadily and turning the dirt between the cobblestones slowly into mud. Looks like he dodge that- wait, what's that noise?

One more sculpture hits the roof directly above him, but fails to pierce through it. Maybe it's not as safe as he thought.

    Inn

The barkeep nods, swallowing briefly but audibly, "We've got some garnet wine in the cellar. I'll go fetch it for you." He takes Cassidy's coins and leaves her the bottle of regular wine and a glass as he goes into a door behind the bar, presumably to fetch the dragon's drink.

Or perhaps soil his pants privately. Either way, he's gone for now and the rest of the bar patrons, who were for the most part eying the newcomers, settle down again to talk to each other in low murmurs.

Periwinkle runs to the far end of the alleyway then ducks around the corner and out of view. The guard probably won't be following him yet, so he sneaks along to the next ally over in the general direction of the inn and peers carefully around the corner with his small mirror, to see if the coast is clear.

    In the Inn

"Never been to the White Forest," Lyzper admits, taking a sip from his mead. Even sitting he's probably at least a head taller than Cassidy, so any pride she feels in meeting is rather scrutinizing gaze is probably fairly won. "They don't speak Draconic in White Forest?"

    Mabdebereth

"I am from Grim Reach. It is a terrible place only the mad would find endearing. I would prefer not to speak of it further." Mabdebereth snorts at the end, remembering the vile things that went on at the keep. Visibly distraught now, she channels her anger towards the bar and its tender. "WHERE IS MY DRINK?!" She roars, slamming her foreleg down on the bar. "Pothoc, pothoc, pothoc..." she mutters afterwards.

    In the Inn

"Not anyone I knew." Cassidy replies thoughtfully. "But then again, I didn't know a lot of people, there weren't even a lot of people to know. Guess it must be the cold and monsters. I didn't mind so much though, which I guess the reason I'm crazy enough to be here, huh?" She states with a faint smile. "What about you? Where are you from?" She asks the others, the reply from Mab making her hesitate a bit. Did she really have to be so loud and rude?

    The Inn

"Right here ma'am." The bartender replies shakily as he slinks out of the back room, holding a deep red glass bottle that sparkles in the lantern-light. It actually takes a moment to realize that the bottle's glass isn't what gives it its colour, but something suspended inside the drink itself.

"Garnet wine, our most expensive and highest quality drink. I'm s-sure your palate will appreciate it, and I assure you it's the highest proof d-drink we have on hand." He stammers, setting the bottle on the counter and pressing a corkscrew lightly against the cork.

"Would milady like just a glass, or the whole bottle?"

One of the raptorans who was busy up until now engaging in a little tongue-play with his mate snorts and shakes his head, muttering under his breath, "Bit uppity for such a little wyrmling isn't she? Must be new." Lyzper and Mab hear him fine over the noise, but Cassidy doesn't seem to pick up on it.

Then a bit louder he says, "Oy snaketongue, give the pinkie a break, he's only a kid." addressing Mab directly.

    Orpheus

Thankfully, no more hail assaults Orpheus as he dashes to the Inn where he remembers seeing Mab fly inside before he was separated from the rest. He can easily slip inside, catching the tail end of the raptoran's comment to the wyrmling dragon he just met.

    Periwinkle

Oddly enough, there are no signs of pursuit. In fact, from the lack of footsteps Periwinkle heard as he was rushing away it's entirely probable that the guard did not give chase at all. Perhaps he's not used to potential criminals vanishing into thin air right beneath his helm, and decided to give the little warforged a pass for his relatively minor crime.

In any case, the path to the inns is clear, but walking out onto the main street could expose him to the guard's vision again. He could try to stick to the back alleys, but there's a chance he might get lost as they don't follow the main road parallel, instead branching off and becoming dead ends seemingly at random.

"That's more like it. Just a glass, if you will." She says, approving of his humbled-if-terrified demeanor.

Hearing the raptoran over the din of the barroom, Mab simply smirks. "When you are as magnificent as I, 'uppity' is but a natural state of being." After taking a sip of the wine, she gives the bartender a nod of approval, then turns to the smart-mouthed raptoran after hearing the nickname. "I would watch my mouth if I were you, chicken-lips. The boy has provided good drink, and so I grace you with the chance to not be incinerated and turned into a suitable meal."

    Periwinkle

Periwinkle gets the inn in sight and ponders the best way to cross the road without being seen. Not easy, for sure. Well, no. It is extremely easy.

He checks his gear and throws a pellet, vanishing and slipping through shadow to within range of the door. He moves invisibly the remainder of the distance and enters the inn, glancing around quickly while still invisible. To get a look at who is there and to see if he can locate his fellow party members.
