Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
So I've recently found the Genesis and SNES my grandmother bought oh so long ago for my dad, and she has a big box of just Genesis and SNES games.
Now, I know I'm going to be sitting around for the whole of my weekend playing these games with my brother, but I'll probably not get through all of them.
So I wanna know, what were your guy's favorite Genesis and SNES games?
That way I'll know what one's to play first, and it's just fun to remember the old games.Busy with Life

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
First of all, this probably ought to be in the Gaming subforum
Secondly and more importantly: Yoshi's Island, all three Donkey Kong Countries, Lufia II (though I gather the rest are pretty good too), Super Mario Kart, and Bubsy. The Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
Earthbound is the only SNES game I've ever really played a significant portion of, and it's really fun if you like the type of game. If you don't already have a copy, though, you're not gonna get one without shelling out a pretty penny.
It's been a bit, GitP. If you're reading this, you're either digging through old stuff, or I've posted for the first time in forever.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
Super Street Fighter II
That game was all the rage when I was 9 and the game we were all obsessed about. Since I also didn't have a SNES myself, that's what we mostly played at friends places.
Illusion of Time was also neat, we played that when staying at a friends house for a weekend.
Oh, and F-Zero. That game set the standard for racing games and I still play pretty much only racing games in which the cars have no wheels. We are not standing on the shoulders of giants, but on very tall tower of other dwarves.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
I don't know why but there's something I find really creepy about Yoshis. They eat everything and everything they consume gets turned into a yoshi egg. They can breathe fire (red versions), fly (blue versions) and cause small localised earthquakes (yellow versions). Bowser is small fry compared to monsters like these. oO

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
I grew up with genesis. Sonic 2 and 3 are considered some of the best platformers out there. For run and gun, Gunstar Heroes and Contra Hard Corps are some of the best shooters ever created.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
I had a Genesis myself.
I'll agree that Sonic 2, 3, and 3+ Knuckles were among the best of the best. Shining Force 1 and 2 are also absolutely amazing games. Phantasy Star 4 is a gem too. Kid Chameleon was bizarre, and insanely difficult yet still fun somehow."And if you don't, the consequences will be dire!"

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
Super Mario Bros. All-Stars. I practically grew up on that game.
And also... *points to username* Ain't it obvious? One of my brothers blew my naive child mind before we got the game when he said that Bowser was a good guy in the game.
Other gems were Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Mega Man X, and Goof Troops.
On the other team, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles.you know that I'm more than just a doll do you?-Geno

Super Metroid. Gotta have Super Metroid.
Also, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is one game. They're the Genesis/MegaDrive OTP.Last edited by Mando Knight; 2012-11-16 at 02:18 PM.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
There are some great suggestions here, but I have to second this one because it's a great game. Just all around well made, fun, good music, and a pretty good story. It appeals to the action/adventure and RPG crowd. Keep in mind depending on your region it could also be known as the Illusion of Gaia or Illusion of Time. I have played it many time and after getting rid of my old school games years ago, Illusion of Gaia was one of the first I bought when I started buying up old games a few years back.
And now I want to find my cart and fire up the ol' SNES.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
Secret of Mana, Super Mario Kart and Turtles in Time were my favourite coop games back in the days.
For solo play, nothing beat a good round of Prehistoric Man while everyone else was playing Donkey Kong. Not that Donkey Kong is bad, it just does not feature a screaming caveman with beerbelly
These are all on SNES ofcourse. Everyone knew that the Sega stinks
PS If you haven't played it already on some other system, go play Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past. Best. Game. Ever.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
For the SNES, in no particular order.
Mega Man X 1-3
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario Kart
F-Zero
Harvest Moon
Legend of Zelda, a Link to the Past
Secret of Evermore (totally underrated game here)The first chapter of The Book of Svarog

Comix Zone, Zombies Ate My Neighbours, both for the genesis, I think.
Also, Ristar.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
Rock'n'roll racing was excellent on both systems, though the SNES version was slightly better (as was often the case).

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
Never owned Genesis. Short list of my favorite SNES games, something remotely resembling an order:
- Chrono Trigger
- Super Mario World (Allstars too if you haven't played the NES ones, of course)
- Final Fantasy VI/III (curiously, the western localization is fairly good too, unlike with Final Fantasy 4 for which you need the Japanese version or a remake to really experience its potential)
- Super Mario RPG
- A Link to the Past
- Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (alas, Super Turbo was never released on consoles; original SFII is the groundbreaking game, of course, but the vastly expanded number of playable characters makes New Challengers more interesting, and few new moves and changed priorities really improve the balance so given the choice I'd rather introduce myself to The New Challengers than World Warrior now; anyways, make sure to play SOME Street Fighter II, those games are made of awesome and have good versus multiplayer)
- Super Metroid
- Secret of Mana
- Axelay
- Lufia II
- Megaman X
- Secret of Mana
- Turtles in Time
- Super Castlevania 4
- NHL '94

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
I can't see Genesis and not recommend Shining in the Darkness (if you have it). It's the precursor to the Shining Force series and a great dungeoncrawler.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
Gotta go with Donkey Kong Country 2 for the SNES. Easily one of the best platformers ever for that system. Not as knowledgeable about the Sega, but Gunstar Heroes and Sonic & Knuckles were amazing games.
And don't forget Earthworm Jim for both systems.Once you go blue, nothing else will do. Once you go Quarian...someone will die.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
If you like shooters, I recommend Gunstar Heroes and Contra Hard Corps for genesis, as well as Super Contra for SNES.
The Mario games are classics as well, which for SNES would be World, All-Stars and Yoshi's Island.
On the RPG front, Genesis has the brilliant Shining Force series, while SNES has a host of offerings - Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore etc.Plague Doctor by Crimmy

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
I just spent the day playing Yoshi's Island.
That game is just...amazing.
Shining in the Darkness was pretty amazing too, in the bit of time I played it.
Thanks for all of the wonderful recommendations. My grandmother had a lot of the games mentioned, though sadly enough there wasn't any Phantasy Star...Last edited by Mindfreak; 2012-11-17 at 09:38 PM.

Re: Favorite Genesis and SNES games?
I'll pick just three games for the SNES:
-Super Mario Kart (especially multiplayer)
-Super Mario RPG
-Earthbound (I love FF6 to death, but I'll give the edge to the system exclusive one for this)
I agree with a previous poster, Genesis stunk. :P
