    Default Alchemists of Al-Revis (IC)

    OOC: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262821

Ah..alchemy..where would we be without it.

    NOWHERE!

For alchemy is the power that holds the world together, it builds our selves, makes our food, and powers our magic...

For various reasons, alchemy is one of the most important areas of study in the world...and for this reason, Al-Revis Academy was built.

You're picked up in a bus..well bus may be the wrong word. It's more a "big roofed metal cart that happens to be powered by magic". And taken across the land to the academy, it's your first year, and it's time to see what kind of alchemist you can turn out to be.

You're dropped off outside of the front gate with all the other students, the gate magically opens. Normally this would be creepy, but this place is far too high-class. How you got into this school without paying anything is beyond yourself, this place looks like a castle!

Suddenly a teacher slides out of the shadows.

"Hello hello students!" he says with a merry smile. "First years, eh? Can't wait to start teaching you. Well first things are first, we need to get you to your dorms. Please leave your luggage behind it will be taken care of by our excellent staff and transported to your dorm. After you've gotten all moved in it's time for the opening ceremonies!" He turns around. "Onward!" this guy is so happy and hammy, you wonder if he's poisoned his mind being around chemicals all these years.

For the past little while, Aveline has been sitting by herself on the bus. Of course she wouldn't want to talk to anyone - it was only the first day, after all. One couldn't expect to make friends right away. So Aveline has been content to occasionally watch the other kids wordlessly. In the meantime, she has opened up her travel knapsack and taken out some of the plates for her armor. It was so bright! As the students get off the bus magical metal cart, the warrior-in-training packs away her armor and zips up her back. Hauling it over her shoulder, Aveline leaves the vehicle with the other students and listens to the strange man as the doors to Al-Revis academy open.
Hmm... I wonder if they have good smithing or shop classes here. Alchemy is useful, but there's so much more to crafting things. I guess that's why I'm here, though - I shouldn't stray too far from my purpose. As events unfold in front of her, Aveline's gaze is drawn simultaneously to the overly cheery faculty member and the students. Were some of them looking at her?
Just put that out of your mind, Aveline. You don't need to worry about them right now. Remember why you're here. Silently, she follows the teacher and the group into the school.

Alembic looks disdainfully around the group of teens on the 'bus'. He nods at Sebastion, but makes no other acknowledgements. Taking up his backpack (ignoring the words of the professor, as that is his only luggage) he walks sullenly towards the school.

You are lead to the dorms, you are separated by gender.

"In later years, after you have joined an alchemy lab and started working together in groups, you will start sleeping in your labs. The second year and above labs have beds and such. You will notice our service staff have placed your luggage at the ends of your beds. If you wish to switch beds with other students feel free to do so. Please do not move the furniture around however."

He smiles and lets you get associated with the dorm, 30 minutes later he comes back to lead you to the dining hall for brunch.

You sit down at the first year table, and the headmaster stands up to address the crowd.

"Welcome, welcome to Al-Revis academy! I look forward to seeing what our first year students accomplish this year! Do keep in mind our policies against bullying and so on. If you wish to check the school rules you may do so in the student resource office."

He looks over the crowd. "Classes are divided by years as you all know, but we encourage our 2nd year and later students to drop in and help our first year students. However please do not do their assignments for them."

He continue on for a fair while until one of the female teachers pat him on the shoulder.

"Ah yes, I apologize I tend to ramble. Let us enjoy our first meal of the year! After this you may go to the student resource building and register for your classes."

He sits down, and the food appears in front of you. Those of you who have spellcraft, can tell that it wasn't a creation effect, but rather a teleportation effect. Apparently they have a big kitchen staff, cause the food looks great.

Alembic sits quietly at the corner of the table. He's attentive but doesn't approach anyone else. He's been keeping an eye out for his friend Sebastion, so he can offer the seat next to himself. Aside from that, he won't meet anyone's eyes, or start a conversation, but he gives short and quiet replies to anyone who asks him a question.

After the food appears at the table, he eats quickly - after examining it carefully, even going so far as to drop bits of it in a test tube he pulls from his pocket and watching the color change. Then, he begins examining the plates and table for enchantments, looking to see how the teleportation affect was managed.

Sebastian is feeling almost ecstatic about finally being in the academy for the first time especially since he had only narrowly been accepted after another, more unfortunate, student had dropped out in the last three months. Still he wasn't entirely safe yet. There were friends to make and teacher's whose names he would struggle to remember on top of all of the other new things in this wondrous place. Making friends didn't seem like it would be much of a problem most of the people here weren't too stuck up, and he even saw Alembic on the bus, there was little to worry about aside from perhaps being bored to death by the headmasters speech. Leaning towards the person next to him, a very tall girl with tangled blonde hair, Sebastian asked "I do not have a clue what it is about this place but it just feels so homely here don't you think? Have you got any idea what classes you are planning on taking?" in retrospect he probably should have introduced himself first but pleasantry was not foremost in his mind at the moment.

As the food mysteriously appears and many of the students dig in, Aveline is content to watch coolly from her bench. Clearly, this was a place of power. She suppresses a chuckle as she watches a nearby student put a morsel into a glass tube. However, Aveline's reverie is cut short by another student leaning dangerously close to her and whispering in her direction. Her immediate response is physical: an almost imperceptible movement away from the boy. Aveline forces herself to take a small breath and think about what he is saying before actually responding to the words that came out of his mouth.
"It's pretty nice. Umm I'm don't know what I'm taking yet." She does not offer her name, nor ask for his. A faint smile, turning away from the student. Her food suddenly looks very appetizing.

From what you can tell, it's some variation on the dimension door spell. Meaning it's likely the kitchens are right below you geographically.

When the meal is finally finished the headmaster stands up and gives the closing speech. When you get back to the dorm you find your packages on your beds. Including a map of the school. You are advised to check out each location before going to student affairs and registering for your first class.

The locations listed are as followed.

    1. Classroom halls
    2. Student Store
    3. Student Affairs
    4. Infrimary
    5. Campus Grounds
    6. Cafeteria (No need to go here since that's where you came from)
    7. Alchemy Labs

Other locations exist off campus, but you are not to go to them until classes start.

Classes will start tomorrow, REMEMBER TO REGISTER FOR YOUR FIRST CLASS.

Alembic reaches his dorm room and scans the documents. He briefly considers skipping the walk through of locations and going straight to the student affairs office, but thinks that visiting each room will hopefully give the other student grades time to finish their registration - which they would have started immediately after dinner, not needing a map to know where to go.

So instead, he takes his map and finds Sebastian. Without any real introduction or wasted words, he states, "Campus tour: Labs, Infirmary, Store, Halls, then registration. Finish with grounds, will take the longest. Bringing the girl?" Alembic acknowledges the presence of the girl Sebastian had been talking to during dinner, without actually having greeted her. He doesn't attempt to meet her eyes, and seems nervous about looking at her directly.

Aveline promptly arrives in her room, tucked away in the girl's wing of the dorms. It seems that the majority of her luggage had already arrived. The first thing she does upon closing the door is check that no piece of her armor has been lost in transit. Satisfied that this is not the case, she neatly packs it away with her hammer in her closet alongside several spare sets of clothing. Aveline sits on the unmade bed, staring into space. Her mind drifts back to the events of dinner. Who was that strange boy? Didn't he have any sense of personal space? The majority of the meal had been extremely awkward after that, not talking to anyone around her but staring down at her food. Aveline shrugs internally: she had come to the academy to learn, not make friends. She thinks about all the facilities listed on her new map, admiring the intricate artwork of the scroll.
Fergar would love all this... everything is done with a craftsman's touch. A pang of sadness hits the girl as she thinks back on her friend and master. She lies back on the bed for a time, fighting off tears before hardening herself and getting back up. It wouldn't do to dwell on this - hopefully she would see the dwarf again before too long. Instead, Aveline forces herself out of her room and heads towards the Classroom Halls. She had best familiarize herself with the campus before registering for classes, as was counseled.

Sebastian was confronted by Alembic's particular method of speaking and replied "No, Somehow I don't think she will want to accompany me but if she does I won't stop her."

Alembic always had been rather brief in his way of speaking and it offered a much needed sense of familiarity in the new environment, nevertheless Sebastian thought it would be prudent to bring his (Eternal) wand of burning hands and pocketed it before leaving the dorms.

    Classroom Halls

The classroom halls are wide and vast, and the classrooms well kept. The classrooms have well forged desks, and each looks like it could hold about 30 people. There doesn't seem to be much to the halls, as the classrooms are well arranged by number so it's easy to find what room you're looking for. You eventually come across a group of 4 older students, a brown hair boy, a blue haired swordswoman, a blonde elf, and a pink haired short girl who looks like a mage.

    Alchemy Labs

When you enter the labs you can hear minor amounts of setup being done. You eventually come across a teacher who looks stern.

"Hey want me to show you the forge?" He asks. "I can explain the labs to you."

Upon seeing the group of other students, Aveline slows down. Continuing her trend of silence, she begins to hover on the edge of their periphery. It might be useful to at least get a sense of who the other students are and what kind of aptitudes they wielded, so the girl leans against a wall and pretends to act uninterested as she listens in on their conversation.

"So what do you think's going to happen this year Wil?" The young mage states.

"Something interesting no doubt." The blue swordswoman calmly notes.

"This place is always interesting. That's what makes it so endearing." The elf argues.

"Either way we better get to the student affairs office to sign up. It's our last year."

The 4 of them take no real note of you and run off. You get the idea that they're serious students who are part of a lab together.

The teacher walks over to the magical forge. "This forge uses the fabricate spell." He nods. "You know what that means right? In order to forge high quality equipment you need to will it into existence, it's not a spell you can use without knowing how to make it by hand first." He taps it. "That's why we have mundane crafting classes. If you know how to make truly great item, they're easier to enchant and they're more effective." He throws some iron into the forge and focuses his energy on it producing a longsword.

"Here why don't you give this sword a try, sadly I need it back from you, strict policy on students using items made by teachers and higher years. We need to have you use your own stuff or else no one would take the smithing classes."

You strike the training dummy he motions you to by the wall, the sword seems to flow like it's attached to your arm, but since he just made it, there's clearly no magic in the sword, it's just that well forged.

(Item of Legend Knack War of the Lance, sword has a +5 bonus to attack rolls).

"1st year labs do not have sleeping quarters" He explains. "This is so people can figure out who they get along with and work well with in the dorms in the first year. We can't have groups signing up for a lab then finding out they don't work well together." He gives a small smile. "There are a maximum of 6 people to a lab, usually with a minimum of 4. Labs are Co-ed, however all policies are still in effect."

He nods and continues. "Labs are sorted by year. However don't be surprised if a 2nd year or higher student shows up to give you some tips. We encourage tutoring and aiding other students. Remember that asking them to do the assignment is forbidden, they are theory teachers only. Also they are not allowed to help you forge your own equipment."

He ponder for a second. "I think that's it. Any questions?"

Sebastian understood the explanation perfectly, it was just a shame that he would probably forget it before the end of the day. Still, a magic forge was nothing to sneeze at and he silently wondered how many classes you could sign up for. It was obvious he had a lot to learn but that was something he wouldn't need to worry about until the lessons actually started.

Gingerly raising his hand Sebastian asked "Is there any limit to the complexity that the forge can work with or can you really make anything just by knowing how to and having the materials nearby?"

In truth he was asking a question for the sake of it but this was the best he could come up with on short notice. He was rather too busy stealing occasional glances around the room while still trying to look like he was paying attention. The room had a very powerful feel to it, it told him that this was a place people worked and it was equipped for any sort of metalworking you could possibly want to do. It was probably possible to forge an entire fortress in this place if only it had a high enough ceiling.

The teacher nods. "Good questions, you'll go far you two."

"The raw materials are usually mined in the mountain by you personally. There's what they call a "living dungeon" there. You mine the rock, come back here, use the forge or the actual smithies, make your items, and keep them in the end."

    He nods.

"You're probably wondering how we keep this place afloat. Well, when you forge new items, you tend to sell the old items used at the student store, at which point we put them on the market. Also we get some government funding."

He turns to Sebastian. "You can't make creature or magical items using this forge. Also you can't invent new items with it we've found. You have to actually be able to regularly produce the item. You can't just ask it for some kind of new weapon and it give you it."

"Anything else?" he says scratching his head.

Somewhat frustrated at the lack of cogent information so far, Aveline shrugs herself off the wall and begins to head to the labs. It might be a good idea to check out the actual facilities she would be working with this year.
Hopefully, their forges and equipment is up to par. Upon entering the labs, Aveline hangs back and continues to watch what is going on. She spies the two boys she had noticed at dinner, subsequently directing her eyes away so that they wouldn't notice her presence in the back of the chamber.

Snapped back to reality by Alembic's question, you could just tell it was a question, Sebastian replied "As long as it is only for reference, I do not intend to visit it any more than is strictly necessary".

The infirmary wouldn't be too much of a problem for him anyway he could just rest for a day and then heal the last of his injuries himself as-long as he didn't break any bones or lose any limbs. He entertained this thought as they walked down the corridor towards the infirmary, the walls were pure white and the tile floor clicked as you walked even with the softest of shoes. The decorations didn't give the impression that the designer obviously thought they did. These walls that practically glowed did not say "Here is a place to be healed" instead they simply expressed that cleanliness was the ruler of this domain. Any blood spilled would be removed and any wounds inflicted would be healed in time but despite whatever intent the staff might have, whatever entirely honest and good reason they might give, the decor said that they were only treating you to remove that unsightly scrape, bump or bruise.

That was only Sebastian's opinion of course.

After making sure that the other two boys had left, Aveline steps up towards the forge. She smiles shyly at the teacher briefly before looking back to all the equipment at her fingertips. There was so much potential here! This was all very promising indeed.
"I have metalworking training, sir. Apprenticed for nearly five years." Her tone is curt, matter of fact. Putting the teacher out of her mind for the moment, she examines the fabrication forge more closely. Aveline takes a moment to admire all the details. Yes, she had the feeling that she would be spending a good deal of time in here. However, having entered after the demonstration, she remains in the dark about the actual process.
"Can you show me how it works?"

"Pretty simple really. Just put the materials in, focus your mind on the forge, and will what you want into existence." He displays his technique to you again, but this time with some verbal step-by-step.

    ~Infirmary~

An adult doctor is there. She seems to be in her mid 20's.

"Hello new students, I'm Elli, your doctor for the upcoming years. I would say I look forward to seeing you, but that would be rude seeing how we're in the infirmary."

    She nods.

"The infirmary is a place to go if you get sick or knocked out by wild beasts, heavy precautions are taken to make sure none of you die, so don't worry about that. In addition once you have learned how to make basic healing potions, you can buy them and other such medicines here, if you don't want to go to the trouble of making them yourselves."

    She nods.

"We also occasionally have recipes for sale."

Aveline nods slowly, taking in every detail of the teacher's instructions. Her mind is now abuzz with questions and possibilities. However, the implication of this process was still worrying, as a rote knowledge of forging and an abundance of alchemists could potentially put honest merchants such as Fergar out of a job.
"What makes the end result different from 'mundane' forging?" While Aveline is itching to try it out, her initial curiosity has yet to wear off.

Alembic nods at the healer's words and asks, "Who makes the potions for sale here?"

He's already quite proficient at making various types of healing potions, so perhaps he can get some pocket money by supplying the infirmary?

"Wouldn't it be easier to have a healer on staff here instead of potions? I understand that they can only use so much magic before it gets tiring but it would help you in regards to not needing to make as many potions."

The infirmary was quickly becoming Sebastian's least favorite part of the academy, not because of decor anymore or even the staff. He disliked this place simply because it smelt of medicine to an almost, ironically, sickening degree. Oh well, he would not be visiting this place very often so it wasn't much of a problem. He was a little giddy about the "Living dungeons" he had heard about from the teacher at the forge though, the idea of having a mine or a place of work that functioned as a partial home was fascinating and very appealing. He was almost certain he was going to take smithing and potion brewing unless the class limit, if there was one at all, got in his way.

    3Second.

"Simple, you don't learn anything from doing this. You want to get better, do it the mundane way."

    Other two

"The potions her are mostly made by me. Of course if you have excess potions you can sell them here, but we don't sell those until we test them."

She nods. "The reason we sell potions is because you can't have me following you around everywhere and holding your hand. You got to develop independence. If you ever actually get send to the infirmary due to an injury, I'll heal you with actual magic. Potions are used cause they're easy to use by anyone, and they're portable. Of course if you want to use scrolls instead, I have them for sale too, but they tend to be less reliable..."

"Okay, so if you judge me a good enough smith, may I try this forge?"Aveline's desire is naked on her face, any sense of shyness of propriety cast aside for the moment. In the moment, there is nothing that she wants more.
