My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

All in good fun! If it's not your cup of tea, skim it, but this show has triggered a great creative outpouring from the Internet. Pony themed fan-art is abundant and often excellent. See below for some examples.

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

Scootaloo never retrieved her scooter. Betcha she'll have another one next time we see her. Cartoon logic.

What if the whole "Luna can enter people's dreams", was just a part of Scootaloo's dream? It's not really true, and when she sees an image of Luna in the moon when she was talking to Dash, it was just her imagination remembering what Luna said.

And, yes, this is huge problem with this episode. In Season 1, Nightmare Moon affair started because Luna felt unappreciated ponies slept instead of staring into her night - but she can't be so oblivious to ignore need for sleep, and given that she supposedly can hang out with anyone in magical landscape she can change on her whim, instead of dark, cold night...

Nope, it being purely a dream makes far more sense, IMHO, especially given it implies ponies just lived through millennium of horrors no one took care of (notice how she blasted apart the nightmare headless horse...) due to Luna being absent. Also, this would meant that ponies are plagued not only by outside creatures (windigos) but also internal ones you can't run from. Grimdark much?

I don't know, just doesn't seem to fit canon, pity there was no foreshadowing...

Yes, the whole ending, with magical RD reappearance and flying scene pretty much blown past anything anyone with decency wrote in Scoot wish fulfilment fanfics. It also ignored 2.25 season worth of RD character traits and pulled Luna's role out of nowhere, without foreshadowing (I mean, it's much larger than Shining Armor, and look how much people complained at him). Without this, it would have been excellent ep, as it is, it clashes too much with rest of canon, IMHO...

You know, I have a feeling this new writer is good, but like Merriwether Williams took what amounted to a glance at wiki to see who characters are, and due to this ignored established lore and pretty much all character development they had (seriously, only AB and AJ were not problematic, and it's only because they are so simple...) to write this one.

Yes. The Luna you saw in the moon speaking to Scootaloo was just her "imagination", or her remembrance of Luna from her dream. Notice Rainbow Dash doesn't notice anything. In theory of course.

And I imagine that Luna has spent more time with the ponyfolk outside of Luna Eclipsed. Remember she did show up at the end of the Royal Wedding, where anypony who's anypony was at.

Also remember that we don't know the scope of her power, maybe she can only be in one at a time, in pretty close to real time, meaning she can't be everywhere in Equestia at once, not by a long shot. And also bear in mind that if pony's are like humans, they don't dream most of the night, which would leave Luna a limited Window of opportunity to operate under. Meaning she might still have had limited interaction, which could foster jealousy. More so with an outside force.

I have two complaints:

1) Luna in the real world speaking through the moon was just a hair too silly/over the top/telling not showing for me.

2) We didn't get any Scootaloo background.

3) Scootaloo's scooter can only be lost so many times! It has feelings too!

These two complaints are currently drowning beneath a sea of squee, d'aww, heartwarming, and *slam* LUNA IS BEST PONY!

Easily my favorite episode of the season so far.

Like, I'm loving the amount of material these episodes are giving us, but I can't help but wonder if they're only throwing it in there because they know we'll like it. I mean, we got the Scootaloo episode just a week after the "Evil Trixie Returns!" episode, my skeptical side can't take that as coincidence. And while it may be fun for now, fandom nods are no way to build a show forever.

I faith in the writers, but I couldn't help but feel like this episode was at least in part inspired by what the fandom has made of the RD/Scoots dynamic.

I didn't feel like this episode was pandering to bronies the way the last one was. We wondered when there would be a Scootaloo episode because they've never given us one 'til now and it was overdue. The RD/Scoots dynamic has been pretty much canon since RD picked Scootaloo up after the show in Show Stoppers.

If they'd been pandering we would have gotten an answer about Scootaloo's parents/family situation. The only thing that might have been pandering is the Luna appearance.

Still, you can watch this episode without knowing anything about bronies or their fanon and enjoy it, while that isn't necessarily the case with the ep last week. In fact, this would be a strong candidate for an introductory episode to someone unfamiliar with MLP

It's not like Luna was dropping by to hang out with Scootaloo. She was doing her job. And her issue was always that she felt under-appreciated in that job. Even in this episode, Scoots immediately assumes Luna was a dream. Instead of appreciating her beautiful night, the ponies are frittering it away in their lame dreamscapes and then she has to keep working fixing all their stupid nightmares. And does anyone thank her? No.

This is just proof that the story we see in the pilot is the simplified old mare's tail version. The actual events were far more complex.

Second, we have no reason to think that being sealed in the moon did not block her powers. So either Celestia took over being the shepard of dreams or ponies just did without for a thousand years. And we certainly have no reason to think at this point that there are actual dream monsters, though it would not be all that surprising for a fantasy world.

I don't see the problem. It would only be an issue if these episodes had no worthwhile ideas except to toss out references and such. But they are strong episodes in their own right, and really just validate the fan interest in these characters because the characters are in fact interesting.

Hey, Scootaloo, just take solace in the fact that you aren't the only one who has nightmares about running. Seriously, the bit where she wakes up in the tent, panting and wild-eyed? Accurate depiction of me.

I forgot how gorgeous Pony looks in HD on a proper monitor. I have been watching on an iPad and a netbook, and then SUDDENLY BEAUTIFUL POKIES

A good episode of Pony comes from the characters. Scootaloo was an endearing protagonist. Absolutely adorable. Plus, it confirmed my suspicions that Applejack, Rarity and Rainbow Dash interact well together. Rainbow Dash was very much the lovable accidentally-insensitive; Applejack, voice of reason and snarker.

CAMPFIRE SONG SWEETIEBELLE YOU ARE THE MOST ADORABLE SINGER (And now I admit that this was partially written mid-episode.

Luna's voice has evolved a bit. I like it, I think. Also, dream guide? Dream guide. This is perfect for HEROICS you have no idea.

And the ending is, barring the excellent character interaction/development in the episode, the reason I watch Pony: it gets me to unironically, without pretense, feel. Scootaloo admitting to Rainbow Dash, exposing her vulnerabilities, and being accepted without question? D'awwww. Rainbow Dash holding Scootaloo up as they fly? Sweet Celestia, my heart.

It wasn't quite as fanservice-y as Magic Duel, but I still think that it was a very solid episode, and I enjoyed it immensely. Now, to go back and read about how. everypony hated it. Huzzah!

So, a Scootaloo episode. Scootadventure! And that it is, kinda. At least it did turn out pretty well for one.

Another three-main-cast episode, like Dragon Quest and Putting Your Hoof Down last session! I figured we would see more like these, as sometimes the full six characters would be a bit too much all the time. Indeed, Pinkie acting silly or Twilight analyzing the ghost stories would probably have not been as amusing. I do find it interesting that, despite the episode staring Scootaloo, there was much more focus on Applejack and Rarity (with Applebloom/Sweetie mostly being there to show them with their sisters).

Wow, Rainbow Dash is either pulling the giant jerk or being completely oblivious. And oddly enough, Rainbow's reasoning at the end seems to really justify this with her behaviour - she is just so set on ignoring her own fear and nervousness that she ends up ignoring anyone else trying to hide the same thing. It may not be that flattering of a character trait, but I will admit that it does make her more interesting.

It's nice to see Applejack pulling a confidante role, even if Scootaloo wasn't willing to take it. It seemed to me that she ended up an important role in the episode, even if she didn't do too much. Come to think of it, she was there to listen and advise Sweetie Belle in Sisterhooves Social, wasn't she? It was also nice to see Luna with an important role again - I did notice her in Scootaloo's first dream, but didn't think much of it beyond just Nightmare Moon/Nightmare Night as a background in Scoot's nightmarescape.

The little war between Rarity and Sweetie Belle this episode was fun to watch. Yes Sweetie, you may have got what you wanted, but not entirely the way you wanted it. It was nice to see Rarity drop it and just have fun at the end, though.

Scootaloo flying off at the end, with the Superman reference, was a good way to end things.

I liked Read It and Weep, although not so much Rainbow Dash in that episode. It did have a lot of fun events in it, between Daring Do and Rainbow's "escape" though.

Yeah that's pretty much why I was uneasy with Luna having the power to look into dreams. If she could, why was she lonely? She even talks to and interacts with Scootaloo normally in her dream. Perhaps she can only intervene in a nightmare and that just wasn't happening under Celestia's rule?

Not so much, I think. Remember that Luna was used to ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE and not having fun alongside her subjects. There is not much to indicate that she had a similar relationship with ponies 1000 years ago as she is taking now, and quite a bit to indicate that she did not. If she was primarily known as the scary princess of the dangerous night, then visiting ponies in their dreams (specifically their nightmares) may not have provided the heart-to-heart talks like she had with Scootaloo.

Heck: it may have even been Luna's visits to sleeping ponies' dreams, and their sleep-addled responses to what they thought as a nightmare of a princess, than produced her isolation in the first place.

S3 Concern

Am I the only one who's feeling just a little pandered to? Like, I'm loving the amount of material these episodes are giving us, but I can't help but wonder if they're only throwing it in there because they know we'll like it. I mean, we got the Scootaloo episode just a week after the "Evil Trixie Returns!" episode, my skeptical side can't take that as coincidence. And while it may be fun for now, fandom nods are no way to build a show forever.

I faith in the writers, but I couldn't help but feel like this episode was at least in part inspired by what the fandom has made of the RD/Scoots dynamic.

I'm not too worried about the pandering just yet - by which, I mean, I'm not worried because the episodes have still been good and entertaining in themselves. If there is any fan-pandering, it is for deciding which ideas to visit or display to focus on. Sweetie/Scootaloo growing up (One Bad Apple) isn't really something that should be unexpected as the seasons move forward, and Trixie coming back (Magic Duel) was certainly handled better than just a generic "Trixie Revenge" story for the fans.

Two things to keep in mind.
1. As Megan McCarthy's recent Twitter shows, they work way ahead. They made decisions for these episodes a year in advance. It doesn't mean it isn't pandering, but the timeline for this stuff shows it was decided in a totally different context.
2. The fandom writes about everything. The reason the Scoots/Rainbow Dash relationship is popular is that it's a good idea. No reason the show can't address that, especially considering that Scootaloo never got her own episode for two seasons.

I didn't feel like this episode was pandering to bronies the way the last one was. We wondered when there would be a Scootaloo episode because they've never given us one 'til now and it was overdue. The RD/Scoots dynamic has been pretty much canon since RD picked Scootaloo up after the show in Show Stoppers.

If they'd been pandering we would have gotten an answer about Scootaloo's parents/family situation. The only thing that might have been pandering is the Luna appearance.

Still, you can watch this episode without knowing anything about bronies or their fanon and enjoy it, while that isn't necessarily the case with the ep last week. In fact, this would be a strong candidate for an introductory episode to someone unfamiliar with MLP

While I'd be perfectly willing to admit that the Luna appearance was inspired by brony love for her (arguably her entire reintroduction was inspired by bronies), I found her highly appropriate here. Having the helping character appear inside Scootaloo's dreams gave her a safe area to speak where Scootaloo would be receptive. Applejack or Rarity wouldn't have worked as well because Scootaloo would have been nervous that Rainbow Dash would overhear and might have lied. The number of ponies that can appear in dreams is pretty limited, and considering last week's episode, having Twilight Sparkle messing around with a random spell was totally out of the question. So I found Luna to be by far the most appropriate choice for the role of adviser here.
