Re: Broken Lands
In that case, perhaps we should depart now. The sooner we leave, then the sooner we can accomplish our task.
Inaius turns to his companions; Do either of you have an objection to leaving at this point in time? Are there any tasks that need attention before you depart? You found the hidden text! Have a cookie.

Zephyr shook his head. "Nope. I'm in between jobs right now, so I'll head out right now. I'll see you two when you get to Dunwar." Zephyr popped out of his chair. "Mikelen, if you could provide me with whatever documents Roth will need, I'll be on my way."

Re: Broken Lands
Fern raises his eyebrows at Zephyr's remark, it was casually flippant, but, he had no concept of who and what Fern or this Inaius fellow were.
Interesting...oh yes, someone asked me a question.
Turning to Inaius he nodded, "Absolutely, although, I think we could manage, My steed should help out somewhat, what with her flying and all. I do believe she could take the both of us."
He looks back to Zephyr with a sidelong glance at the mention of a flying steed and then back to Inaius, "or we could hire some sword arms to accompany us there, even just some beef cake morons would work to sway most and I have some coin for it..."Spoiler

"The roads before the way station are patrolled and are safe to travel alone. The way station sits on the Fellrock side of the gateway between Greenfell and Fellrock. It acts as a guard station, and effectively prevents bandits from setting up in Greenfell. Past that you will need to be on your guard though.

Re: Broken Lands
Fern looks back to Inaius, Wow, he really is adamant on leaving, perhaps he is trying to hint towards something....or perhaps he needs a drink as much as I do? , hell, either way, the sooner out of this office, the better.
"I'll be good to leave as soon as we get our two hundred up front, as promised." he says, looking to Lord Mikelen, with out any hint of sarcasm.
Once received he will exit the office and Summon Stormwing, he smiles as he sees the majestic beast appear before him, neighing slightly as she recognizes her master. He runs his hand through her shaggey grey mane and turns to Inaius, "you may want to get a mount, you know...to keep up."

Re: Broken Lands
Mikelen pulls four large pouches from a small drawer that slides from his desk. The pouches are notably bigger than the drawer.
Here are your advances, and the advance for Roth. Hilda should be done writing the missive to the Lor Rep. His name is Sam Qwillfeather. He should be at the Lor staging warehouse. It's just past the gate, can't miss it. He will make my offer to Roth and hopefully Roth will be ready quickly.
You exit the room and Hilda is waiting at the door with a letter sealed with the Lor seal (A walking cain crossed over a merchants scale). She hands it to you wordlessly and shows you out. You note that there are three merchant looking fellows in nice business outfits waiting patiently on the chairs in the waiting room and the large earth creature is nowhere to be found.
Upon summoning Stormwing, it occurs to you that he cannot carry both of you unaided.

"Unfortunate, it seems your steed is incapable of carrying the both of us," Inaius glances about the city street, searching for an idea.
Inaius snaps back to attention, apparently having come up with an idea; "I believe I can procure a horse for myself without much difficulty, would you like to ride ahead to the way station, or accompany me?"
SpoilerEither way Inaius is going to make his way to the nearest location where he can purchase or rent a horse. Inaius will make a Gather Information check in order to find such a place, hopefully one that currently doesn't have any customers in it.
Here's the gather information roll. Inaius is looking for a mostly empty place to purchase or rent a horse.

Re: Broken Lands
Horses are easy to find, if still expensive, in a trade city such as Purgis. You find a horse merchant who has a light warhorse for sale. The shop is empty except for him and two stable hands. He is willing to part with the horse, fully kitted with riding saddle and a weeks feed, for the steal of 150gp.

Re: Broken Lands
Inaius makes his way to the stable, but stops about 100 feet from the building. Putting his fingers to the forehead of his mask, Inaius concentrates for a moment, invoking the magic item's power. Illusionary magic ripples out from the mask, disguising Inaius. The mask's deception replaces Inaius' typical look, making him resemble a Druid of sorts. His new attire includes a tunic of bark, a gnarled staff, and a long, unkempt beard. His face is that of an old man, and his cloak is made of a variety of leaves woven together. The magical mask itself now resembles a hand-crafted, wooden animal mask, carved to depict the face of an exotic, colorful bird.
In his new appearance, Inaius finishes his walk to the stable, and enters the building.
Approaching the counter, Inaius begins to speak in a slow, but slightly squeaky, voice; "Ah, hello good stable-keep. I was, err, wondering if I might be able to acquire the service of one of your horses? I was told that many of the denizens of this city rely upon other such methods of transportation, however, as a man of nature, I am much more comfortable when traveling via animal."
Inaius pauses, then clears his throat before continuing; "Unfortunately, in nature there aren't many shops, so men such as I don't typically have very much use for money of any sort. Because of this, I find that the meager amount of funds that I have is completely inadequate to pay for one of the fine steeds you happen to be selling. Perhaps, as a favor to me, you could lower the price? I could make it up to you in another manner, perhaps by spreading word of your shop? That way, you will surely receive more customer, and I would be happy to assist you, as any man who works with animals is a friend of mine."
SpoilerInaius is attempting to lower the price of his steed through a combination of disguise, bluff, and diplomacy checks.
Inaius' disguise check is an attempt to resemble a druid, or some other individual who would spend the majority of their time in nature (rather than a city such as Greystone). Inaius is in possession of a Mask of Lies, which allows him to cast Disguise Self upon himself three times per day. Inaius is expending one of these uses to activate this ability, giving him an additional +10 to his typical +8 when is comes to disguise checks.
Inaius' bluff check is an attempt to act in character when conversing with the stable-owner.
Inaius' diplomacy check is an effort to reduce the price of the horse.

Re: Broken Lands
Inaius manages to convince upon the merchant his need and convinces him that he needs to be helpful. He sells the horse for 130gp and the promise of a favor next time he needs help with a sick horse. Inaius manages to get a mile out of town before he realizes he never got the name of the mysterious druid at his door.
Zypher takes the parcel for the Lor rep and takes off at a bit of a jog. By bit of jog, I mean he covers ground faster than a fast horse and touches dirt about every 130ft.
The island of Greenfell is a bowl shaped rock with a large misshapen lake in the middle. The lake is well maintained, and is used to irrigate the island. Rice is grown towards the center, with vegetables sloping up the hills, and the island is rimmed by orchards of lumber and fruit trees. The amount of trade that crosses Greenfell has provided for a sturdy bridge crossing the lake directly between the gates and a good road to connect them. Still 30 miles of farmland is a long, boring trip for most.
Zypher makes it gate to gate in 138 min. He takes a moment to catch his breath and makes his way to the warehouse and turns the parcel over to the rep, a tall human named Finias Kain. He reads the parcel without comment and directs the staff to provide Zypher with some comforts while he waits, then departs.
Zypher is given a jug of water, some toasted bread, and a glass of wine that isn't half bad, and set on a bench off to the side of the warehouse to wait.
The rest of the group makes the trip in another hour. As they arive they make their way to the warehouse easily. The enter the door and see Zypher waiting. Just after they enter they see Finias enter through the loading door followed by a massive giant of a man with red painted armor. He is unnaturally large. This must be Roth the Red.
You are shown to the map room without much talk, and Finias pulls out a 15' x 5' map of the island.
"Ok everyone. This is Roth. Good fellow, I fought bandits with him before." he says "Mikelen was a little sparse on details. How do you want to go about getting this wagon back, and how can I help?"

Re: Broken Lands
Zephyr looked up at the massive man, and shook his head. "Direct confrontation is a last resort here, old chap. We'll want to take a more subtle approach, if possible." Zephyr turned back to the map, studying it as best he can. "Okay. I'm not familiar with this area, so you'll have to help me Finias. Where is the WuTan Clan's encampment, and do we have any high cliffs, embankments, hills, that sort of things nearby?"

Re: Broken Lands
Inaius rode towards the way-station, quite pleased with his deception, even if it had only saved him a small amount of gold. During the ride, Iniaus grew quite fond of his newly acquired steed, and decided to dub the horse "Abacus".
Arriving at the way station, Inaius dismounted and made his way toward the bench where he spotted Zephyr. However, before Inaius could speak, a towering figure in red armor approached, and began to speak.
Inaius didn't quite agree with this plan, as slaughtering the Goblin thieves could result in the creation of enemies for Inaius. Inaius was, of course, not unused to having enemies (it occurs a lot for a man such as he), but it was still not the best result if ti could be avoided, and a subtler approach was surely possible. Before Inaius could speak against the plan, Zephyr spoke up, voicing an opinion similar to Inaius'.
Inaius spoke up, offering a third strategy; "If we attempt to resolve the situation without bloodshed at all, then no sort of application of force will be needed." Inaius turned toward Roth and Finias, whom he assumed to be the most familiar with the WuTan Clan. "Do we have any way of bargaining with the clan? Are they known to be an agreeable group?"You found the hidden text! Have a cookie.

Re: Broken Lands
Looking from Zephyr to Inauis, a slightly amused look on his face, Roth bluntly remark: "If they could be bargained with, why would Lord Mikelen bother with hiring us? We simply don't have the time for diplomacy. Violence is inevitable, i am guessing you are here to keep it to a minimum."

Re: Broken Lands
Yes Finias replies I assume none of you have dealt with the WuTan before. Watch yourselves, they are very quick, very dangerous, goblin ninjas. They like to use fire attacks
Fellrock is an 60 mile long fairly narrow spit of rock that is the first leg of the trip between Purgis and Dunwar. The terrain is rocky and in many places mountainous. Not much lives here. It wouldn't be a problem except that the goblin clans keep showing up. We think they have access to a gate we don't know about. That or they have some sort of caravan from a goblin controlled island near here.
There are three clans currently with active raiding parties on the island. Wutan is the only clan on this end right now. Removing them has not been a high priority, and most of our bandit hunting efforts have been focused on the Wratth clan up north, far nastier.
The WuTan clan is actuary not bad as far as bandits go. They take prisoners and generally avoid killing. Partly because we pay good ransoms for survivors, but also because they have a clan culture that makes a live capture much more of an achievement of honor than a kill.
They keep their deals with merchant houses and honor contracts. The fact that Lor was hit at all is odd, as we pay them favor money to hit other houses rather than us. Someone must have out bid us. They also have been asked about negotiating for the wagon. They won't open talks, and that tells us someone else has already entered negotiations for it. They won't talk to anyone else until those talks fall through.
I have never seen talks take less than four days though, so the party who is dealing with them is likely still at the camp, here. He points as the map. The location is a small forested area in the shadow of a mountain. Cliffs make it hard to move around in this area, so the clan sets up meetings here. I was going to arrange for an aerial survey of the area with a boat we have on hand. I can't put it into danger, but I can arrange a flyover.
I will say this though. Mikelen says you are good, and I hope so, because this smells bad to me. I don't have a full brief, but I am worried about who else you are going to run into down there.

Re: Broken Lands
Fern waits for Inaius to purchase his horse, which by his time keeping took entirely too long. With a raised eyebrow at his new companions capabilities of purchasing a simple thing, he grabbed the reigns of Stormwing and cantered off, hoping that Inaius was capable of controlling the beast he just purchased.
It didn't take long for the pair to reach the way-station and when they did, he felt Stormwing was reluctant to stop, as she probably knew he would dimiss her for later. Smiling, he leant down and whispered to her, 'not today my lady, we'll let you stretch your wings!'.
"Go ahead, I'll catch up." he said to Inaius, as he spotted their other companion, Zephyr outside on a bench. He slowed her down to the short canter and took his time, he knew they would plan and talk about things with his absence, having not known each other, and he also knew out of inevitability and due cause, that they would defer to his opinion. Not because he was so much better than they were, and of all accords, that was still in the air. They were still new acquaintances, settling on a plan before all were present would be a bad way to go. And well, he had a way with words.
He watched as he saw the big Red armored man approach as Inaius came close to Zephyr, "Ah, he must be Lor's man, interesting, he is larger than old Grug. I wander if he is as strong..." he said to himself, musing out loud.
He stopped by the same area where Inaius had dismounted, having handed his reigns off to a hand, Fern dismissed the offer to take his mount and instead wrapped the reigns about the saddles main handle. "Have fun" he said as he slapped her behind, sending her skyward as she unfurled her massive wings.
Sighing he moved into the room to see them all conversing with another, he was saying something about a skyship doing an an aerial survey.
"Excellent, some recon would be the first step to take, we don't want to just traipse up there on horse back and take a look around. Even if that is what we'll end up doing." He looks at the tall man "you must be the help that we were told was here, either you have giants blood or there is magic about you, I can't tell either way, and neither do I care, I assume you can form a sentence?" he asks moving on as if the question was irrelevant "When can you get your boat in the air? One thing that is not on our side is time" he says, fully aware of how his late entrance was contradictory to what he just said. "I suggest we head out, while you send you ship," turning to the other man, the one who was obviously less useful and on Lor's direct payroll "can your ship rendezvous with us on the road? Not having to wait will speed things up."
He stands there and waits for an answer like the Lord of the house that he was, 'ah, those lessons came in handy after all, father.' he thought to himself. He knew some here wouldn't take kindly to his actions and tone, but it would get the job done. And he was thirsty.Spoiler

Gesturing at the glowing runes and the dozens of floating daggers surrounding his head Roth exclaims in a cheery tone:"You're a bright little noble, you'll figure it out. . . Eventually anyways."
Turning to Finias he continues, in a more serious way: "Do we know when the negotiations started? If they started just yesterday we should still have enough time to not rush in and get killed."Last edited by Tjallen; 2013-02-08 at 08:00 PM.

Re: Broken Lands
"You're a bright little noble, you'll figure it out. . . Eventually anyways."
"Oh so you DO speak, how grand!" he says with a giant mocking smile "It will make it SO much easier when telling you what to hit! And I thought we were going to do some combat charades, my training hadn't actually gone over that particular method of communication, but I thought we might improvise it, you know, a combination of somatic maneuvers and a sprinkling of martial discipline...oh never mind!"
He stops smiling and looks at the large man "While I do realize you are Lor's man, and you may have some military training, do not begin to think, in your addled pea sized brain, that you are in charge. Or for that matter, the hidden agenda of this whole thing goes beyond the will and word of those present. I am a man, and as you so bluntly put, a noble. And more so, a summa cu m laude of the great Warmage college, and my associates here, while newly acquired, my colleagues, where chosen along with myself for this specific mission with our specific talents in mind. You were choice number two for the brawn's department."
He stops again, mostly for the dramatic pause, but to catch his breath "So with that said, until the time comes that we all know each other better, and can order our usual drinks for each other. Know your place."
He turns to Finias expecting his answers post haste.
Spoiler

Looking down at the noble, Roth continues, the sarcasm thick in his voice:
"But of course i bow to your superior noble brain and your years of experience with hitting training dummies, how foolish of me to think learning how to fight through combat was actually a good idea, A dozen years wasted."

Re: Broken Lands
Finias shakes his head at the snipping back and forth. He leads the group out of the map room and into a hanger. In the center is the Lor boat. It is a squat, flat, round disk, roughly 30ft across, studded with a ring along the outer edge of crystal nobs the size of your fist. It is bowed along the bottom as if it was a slice cut off the bottom of a massive sphere. A guardrail runs around the edge and there is a pilot's stand along the edge. On the for of the ship is labeled in golden paint "Westwing".
Finias moves to a pulley near the door and pulls down. As the roof begins to open sideways he speaks.
It seems this is not a group for detailed talk. Good, I prefer to be airborn myself. It helps you get a look at what is really going on. He strides up to the helm of the boat and lays his hands on the controls. The boat springs to life, the crystals glow light green and a low hum fills the room as the boat lifts to hover a few inches over the ground.
Hop on, we will go have a look see.

Zephyr looked at Fern as he verbally assaulted Roth with a mixture of distain, confusion, and disbelief. Yeah, sure, Fern was a noble, good for him. But that tirade was just plain rude. One would expect a noble to have better manners than that. Zephyr contemplated pointing this fact out to the rather prissy noble, but was momentarily distracted by Finias leading the group to the hanger. And then everything else washed away as his eyes filled with the boat.
"It's...It's glorious!" Zephyr took a running leap onto the disk of the airship, and began examining it from aft to stern. "I never get over these things, never get over them! What model is it? Custom made? Oh, I bet it's a psychic engine. It's a psychic engine isn't it? I prefer Incarnum engines myself, but that's because I'm better at using them. Oh, but this is beautiful." Zephyr bounced up, down, and all around the Westwing, his eyes (and, somewhat surprisingly, feet) glowing with excitment.ATTENTION ANYONE WHO I'M PLAYING WITH:

Re: Broken Lands
She is a Dunwar Mining rig, with some modifications of course. Psychic, wooden hull, 30ft end to end. Finias says with a smile. He seems glad that someone has taken an interest in his ship. Got her off the dwarves one year after she took a rock slide. They say they barely got her to limp home. I had to rebuild the aft crystal array myself after the dwarves wrote her off. She is not much use hauling cargo, and she is slow, but she is great for going up and parking. I have never had a better platform for surveying. That is why Lor has me hired, I make maps. I have a full set of surveying equipment stowed in the storage lockers, along with a folding drafting desk and inks. You can float right up and just look down at everything.

Re: Broken Lands
Thankful at the break in the dulldrums of verbal abuse, Fern follows Finias to the airship.
As he walked he was formulating another verbal tirade to punish the rock Roth. But as he walked he suddenly asked himself, mentally, why in the nine hell's was he being so verbose and....well...rude? He didn't know this man, and well...he didn't care to, was it that he was Lor's man? No, that couldn't be it, he had no qualms with the man, let alone his peons. What in the world was going?
Shaking his head he watched as the others stood in awe of the ship. It didn't seem much, just a small air sleuth, just like the man said, it was a mining ship how great could it be?
"Well, you all can get in that thing, but I'll be coming along by my merry self, I have other means of aerial transport." he said, not really caring that he had insulted anyone, or at least trying to come of that way.
He doesn't wait for anyone to retort his statement and walks back outside and whistles, getting Stormwings attention, which wasn't hard as the beast was coming in low anyway, getting impatient at her masters absence.
He smiled at her approach, she could always make him smile. Mounting her swiftly, he took off into the air, circling around the building for where the ship would come out. Staying obvious so they would see him.Spoiler
