Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
A member of the ponythread in the media section directed me to this thread to ask for feedback on my picture. Greetings, fellow bronies! My salutations to you all.
Here's the picture in question, sketch version, color with colored lines version, and color with black lines version. WARNING: BIG.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
Eh, we're mostly the same people, there's just less of us and we don't talk as much. I think you'd be better off advice-wise in the main thread even though this one was set up for the purpose. That said, welcome.
The pencil and black line ones look the best. I'd agree with all of Thanqol's advice, and add that Spike's expression is a little strange, and I have no idea how he is managing to keep his balance. The highlighting (mostly on the bodies) looks very thin and line-y, while the shadows are a little hard to notice.
I also don't get why Rarity's mane has corners while her tail does not, but that's how you always draw her, so I guess at a stylistic influence.
How long did the original sketch take you?Last edited by Madcrafter; 2013-06-01 at 10:49 AM.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
I don't think so. The main thread will give you plenty of random 'awesome's which are nice but not much use as far as actual art critique goes.
Also, Madcrafter, why do you write Music: Pony at the bottom of your posts? It is of no value. The reason for my daily music plug is so that I can recommend other people music I like and build a backup playlist of all my favourite music in the unlikely event that my house burns down and I lose all my data.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
Well, Forum Explorer and MLai were giving him lots as far as I can remember.
As for the Music: Pony, it was originally supposed to be something similar to yours, but never actually got there... I think. Never got there and it kinda just, stuck around. I'll take it off.
A forum is an odd choice of remote backup though.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
And I'm glad to be welcomed. :)
It seems the majority opinion seems to be that black lines are better with my style, and so from now on I'll work with black when inking my sketches. Spike's tail is supposed to be wrapped around Twilight's hind leg and he's to be leaning on it, but I derped the depth and Spike now seems to be floating midair. I'll watch out for these kind of errors next time. I wasn't very sure about adding highlighting to this picture at all, but I did it anyway in the name of practice - and it is all too evident that I need more of it. Rarity's mane corners have more to do with the fact that those circles are small (about a centimeter or less on the actual paper); I'll fix that on my next Rarity. On shading, I'll use darker colors next time for the multiplying layer. That might fix things.
Thank you greatly for your feedback, dear sir! :D
PS: I think the sketch took around 50 to 70 minutes. I had trouble with Rarity's face and Applejack's pose, and I had to erase a lot of things before I ended up with the finished sketch.Last edited by meto30; 2013-06-01 at 08:24 PM.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
Almost a WIP, but mostly because the pony the picture of is a work in progress (for example, hairstyle may yet get tweaked, cutie mark is a placeholder).

Nah, I've got one, too. And I'm a pack rat.
Also, Thanqol also generates a YouTube list he can triple reference for clarity.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
Capes eh? That gives me an idea.
----
Day 341:
Watched some videos, tried some things. The cape comment set me off though; unnecessary background info about this piece:flyingchicken's post made me think that maybe I should do some looking into colour again. Problem is, I don't really know what colours he should be. Any suggestions? If not, maybe I'll just leave him grey and move on.Time: 1:30?SpoilerThis comes from a improv game I once played, where the prompt was to the effect of "Support group for failed superheros". We were on a sailing ship, so props were in short supply. For no particular reason, I remembered a Chekhov's gun line from Angels and Demons, along the lines of "a square yard of fabric can slow a man's fall by 20%". Grabbing a climbing harness and all the bunk sheets I could find, Capeman! was born, on the reasoning that if the line above was true, than if he had enough square yards of fabric attached to him, he'd be able to fly. Hilarity ensued.
The mega derp in this piece is the right leg, which doesn't actually hook up to the side of the torso. The arm is in the way, which makes it a little less noticeable, but it's definitely off looking. I need a some more work on foreshortening too (though that link that was posted in your drawthread by Colonel Fedora was very helpful Thanqol, interesting way of doing it).Last edited by Madcrafter; 2013-06-02 at 11:28 PM.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
Uh, yeah. I honestly didn't even think about it; the sky was just a little too plain and I was like "clouds!", switched my colour to a white, and lay down a few strokes. This was actually the first picture I think I've tried using a different brush than just the default round one; I think I can see now how people become "brush sluts" as I saw it termed.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw II
@Balmas: It's pretty good. The only thing I can suggest is to consider upping the line weight on the rifle, his beak and maybe the cigarette. As it is, it looks really weird what with all the other lines being much thicker.
And don't worry about the whole pants thing, that'll come to you eventually.
Anyway... Wings. Wings are the worst thing to happen to ponykind since the hay blight of '74. All I can say is that that historical comparison makes no logical sense whatsoever and that I hate drawing them. But yet, they look so cool!
Spoiler
What do you people think? I'm worried that his left wing looks deformed when compared to his right.

I lack first hand experience of Harem Pant crotches and Griffon tailoring both.
However, I can assure you those are in fact Harem pants, of the classic-full variety. Gauzy and everything!
Elemental? Picture isn't displaying for me, not even using the url directly as a link.
