Re: Runelords IC
Khazak followed the others, when the big nasty appeared out of nowwhere. Suddenly the group leapt into action, attacking the beast with tooth and claw, axe and bomb. The echoes of the explosion were still dying away by the time the dwarf hustled forward to find the others engaged in some intellectual dialogue concerning the characteristics of the obliterated creature in front of them.
As Khazak looked around, the girl with the skin condition asked, "... Say, inherited properties. Khazak? This'n a dwarven stereotype - your underground sense tell you anything about this here cave system?"
The dwarf looked around, then rubbed his beard for a moment. "Well, lass, Ah'm guessin' this cave be made o' stone. Or rock ... definitely sumtin hard and ... rocky. Or stoney." After a moment, his face split into a grin as he shook his head. "Lass, Ah've been livin on the steppes fer most o' me life, fightin' giants. Ye've prolly got more experiences then Ah do. And it's fer certain Rag there has read more on caves then Ah've seen ..."
Reaching out, he touched the edge of the cavern. "But this do look a bit worked ... Ah'm guessin' it ain't natral." Khazak took a few moments to poke around in the beasts nest, using his axe, then walked over to check the cave to the right.

Re: Runelords IC
"We can take the right way first, fine, but let's not waste time examining their droppings to find out how many could be here. They either heard us coming, or didn't, or don't care. Either way, we need to get moving before they ambush us while we're doing research, or we need to get them before they set up defenses."
"Hesitation is death." That's the phrase he always heard in Urglin. Sure, there's a time and place for strategy and tactics, but it doesn't help if the group gets caught flat on their asses when an enemy charge comes through.
"C'mon, let's get moving." Despite the command, Tarok doesn't move forward until Liresha does as well. She had their best source of light, and he wouldn't do much good if he went ahead by himself in the dark. Apparently other orcs can see just fine in the dark, but that never applied to the ranger. Maybe he just didn't spend enough time in dark tunnels crawling with ugly abominations.Avatar by A Rainy Knight

Re: Runelords IC
May stood a bit puzzled by what had happened. A nervous smile on her lips as if to show confidence in what had happened... particularly of the large boom and chaos that ensued the destruction of the rather suspect creature. Her eyes fixated on the group as Baelthor walked up beside her. "Well... I think if theres things around to hear us... they would of heard us already quite easily. I do think we should keep moving steadily, just being careful and watching our step." She spoke, raising her own hand before forming her own source of light, aiding in providing some light as she lingered near the back.
Baelthor kept himself behind May, as if attempting to protect her back side. May wasn't exactly the most 'sturdy' of individuals. She could easily be fodder to something dangerous, and Baelthor had no desire to have harm come upon her. While it might cause him rage given someone were to point it out, he tended to act more like a 'bigger brother' to May, attempting to push her the right way and protect her... even if he could be overbearing and much to protective over his master.

Re: Runelords IC
The tunnel runs for maybe 30ft before reaching a waist high pile of rubble. The rough worked walls of the cave complex now replaced with smooth grey stone walls carved with the outlines of some sort of creature - though so broken it hard to see.
Through the hole in the far wall over the waist high rubble you can see a small chamber. The original purpose of this chamber is unclear, but large mounds of rubble lie strewn on its floor. An investigation of the rubble reveals that most of it seems to have consisted of broken urns and other pottery containers that once held food stores, long since crumbled to dust. The urns themselves are covered in fragments of detailed pictures, each depicting various monsters devouring humanoid figures in interesting and unpleasant ways. A single door crafted form sort of strange red metal is the only apparent exit - the red metal unusual as your approach it hair stands on end and metal items jiggle and point towards it slightly.
Spoiler
Know History or Religion can be useful here?
- the door effect isn't dangerous, its just a slightly magnetic metal that they used to build the door. Dungeon stylings....

Re: Runelords IC
Liresha blinked twice, then shook her head.
"Rock, eh? Drat. Should'ave seen this comin'. Desna weeps, we're in a cave system! The shock. Knew your keen dwarven sense'd come in handy. Good job, Khaz. Also? Whallop me next time I go harebrained and assume you're some kind of walking stereotype o' beards, biceps and beer. It's---
"Shank me, you're right". Stepping out of range of the blood splatter helped ease of the scratching at the back of her mind.
"It's just... fascinating, being attacked by weird freaks in a rocky, stoney system of worked caves. I mean, goblin's terrifying and one thing, right, but this is just... Pathfinder Chronicle stuff! I'd wave my arms about to get all spotter on how nifty this is, but yeah. Focus. Just never figured I'd be traipzing around some tomb somewh... "
Liresha trailed off with a shudder.
"... If anyone sees a skeleton wrapped in a bunch of bandages shambling towards ya, leg it. S'is unlikely, n' dont' recall Sandpoint resting top of a sunken city, but yeah... Focus. Someone else want the sunrod? Tie it to a belt or summit. S's odd seeing everything greyscale, then colorbloom."
Taking point, Liresha headed down the rightmost path. Khazak was right, keen dwarven sense or no, and the walls here had been worked over by something trying to make it smoother. The long tunnel leading to this place was coarser, so that made this bit part of a different complex - older, probably. A quick move through a mound of waist high rubble made that all the more clear, as the room at the end of the path contained nothing but dust, debris and a foreboding red door that seemed to tug at her pouches. All the fragments had spent innumerable ages in the dark, and the smell was not so much dust as it was age, a kind of weight pressing down. Albeit that might just be the final fraying of nerves giving up under the assault of curiosity.
Who'd build a door of magnetic metal? Someone trying to bar or hinder arcane magic? Or a group of people with a particular infatuation with pulling pranks on knightly times. Curious and curiouser. The tiefling drew closer, stepping past murderous depictions of grime and gore. Infinite historical value, probably, but not a lodestone door.
"Anyone ever seen anything like this before? Whoever built this place really fancied monsters."
Up close, she could her various trinkets scuttling about, buffered invisible forces. Huh, every single die in her bag would be showing snake eyes right now, courtesy of the little lead plate that made winning game slightly easier.
Hopefully, not a sign to indicate anything about the door itself...
SpoilerUnless someone goes "Historically, that's a Red Door of Doom! And touching it will curse your kin for eight generations!" or something similiar, Liresha tries to open the door, and peek into the gloom beyond.

Re: Runelords IC
Raigard smiles widely at Liresha (a disturbing sight considering the amount of explosives he carries) after the magus mentions about the possibility of pooling/trading resources and prepares to begin a twenty minute enumeration of all his texts.
Fortunately for everyone, some new shiny trinket appears in front of Raigard and his short attention span drops the conversation... for now.
Spotting the strange door, the alchemist's curiosity takes over and Rag rushes to examine the strange material.
Oh, this is magnetic! Did you know natural magnetism originates from certain compounds having unpaired electrons in their atomic or molecular orbitals? And just having that is not enough! The magnetic momenta need to be aligned, otherwise they cancel each other and you have what is called paramagnetism, which is actually exhibited by oxygen in air... mumbles Rag as he examines the door
SpoilerRag has both knowledge History and Religion, both with +6. It has never been clear to me what to do in these situations (roll just one or both), so I'll roll both and if I have to choose one, I'll say History

Re: Runelords IC
THe slightly magnetic door is not the first that Liresha has heard about. Unusual metals like this not all that uncommon in ancient Thassilonian architecture, which if true would make these caves ancient.
Although the pots and their depictions worry May slightly. The depiction of Lamashtu the mother of monsters and the unloved not boding well for the nature of the catacombs they were about to enter.
Moving up the corridor you soon come to another split. Ahead at the edge of the torch and light light you can see another reinforced red metal door and just before it another small chamber with some kind of statue though the details can't be made out as only a few bits of the edge can be seen.
To the right the corridor looks clean and well used, but ends in a corner some 80ft away...

Re: Runelords IC
I say we keep right suggests the alchemist, his mutagen once again in his hand it is well documented that a sensible approach to searching unknown structures is to always keep course with one of the walls. Of course, the approach starts to become less useful once you add multiple levels and magical teleportations, but the principle should stand
Although that statue does look interesting finishes Rag as he streches his neck to catch even a glimpse of the hidden object, his curiosity betraying the logic of his earlier plan.

"Check the statue, Raigard. Silver piece says its the megalomaniac who constructed an underground cave system full of freaks, magnetic doors and Thassalonian artefacts. Hope to Desna that door's a fluke, by the by, crawling 'round Thassalonian complexes issa way, way easy way to get stuffed n' snuffed."
Infinite historical value!
Minimal chance of hospitality, with a side of ancient, barely functioning magical interloper deterrents.
On the other hand, old places meant old books, and Thassilonian would mean really old books, just shy of dust. Archiac phrases, descriptions of people long since dead, completely irrelevant geo-political breakdowns, poetry so out of style it was practically vintage - all the really good stuff.
Scratch that "Stuffed bit", I think there's a good chance this place'll be worth it. I can nip down this hallway rightwise, in the dark, peek around the corner and you history buffs look at the stoneface?

Re: Runelords IC
May's eyes seemed to focus to great lengths upon the statue and pots scattered around. It was far from a comforting sight to behold. Given who it was, there was a good likelihood if something lingers inside, it likely wasn't of very good intention. Hearing the others speak snapped her out from her daze as she wandered forward in thought, looking up to the others.
"Ah...s.. sorry. The statue... its of Lamashtu." She spoke, Baelthor looking up at her as she spoke not quite knowing what it meant though showing curiosity none the less. While Baelthor was her Eidolon, they didn't exactly know everything about each other. It wasn't something he expected for her to know such things.
"Ah.. I suppose its better to clarify. Lamashtu is the mother of monsters... and the unloved. I'd assume this place is dedicated to her and... its not very likely if there are things much like we encountered before down here, they aren't very likely to be the friendly sort at all." She gave her warning looking up at the others, hoping to give some pause before they might decide to venture further.

Re: Runelords IC
Lamashtu. Not the type to engage in religious research, Tarok didn't know very much about the gods, but there were a few orcs back in Urglin who revered the unholy Mother of Beasts. Gorum and Rovagug were always popular of course, but that probably had to do with the fact that they were much more simple (kill everything you see kind of gods), or perhaps because they were much less female.

Re: Runelords IC
As you get closer May and Raigard can see that the red marble statue is of a strikingly beautiful but, at the same time, monstrously enraged human woman standing in the middle of this room, her stony expression twisted in fury. The woman wears flowing robes, and her long hair is held back from her face by an intricate headdress of hooks and blades. In her left hand she carries a large book, the face of which is inscribed with a seven-pointed star. Her right hand holds a glittering metal and ivory ranseur that looks razor sharp and is has a string of Thassilonian runes carved down the shaft.
There is nothing else in the room save for a hole in the wall leading back to the tunnel that you were walking down initially. This room obviously meant as some sort entry chamber. Ahead there is another door of red metal and to the right stairs lead upwards into darkness...
Back to where the others are waiting everyone pushes down the right hand corridor, the corridor going around a sharp corner before the room widens slightly and the light of Liresha's spell plays out around you. The tunnel widens here into what appears to have once been a small shrine, for to the northeast steps lead up to a platform of gray stone. Sitting atop the platform is an ancient altar, little more than a jagged block of black marble with a shallow concavity on top of it. This basin is filled with what appears to be filthy water. The light illuminates the great double doors on the far side of the room, the same image of the women statue emblazoned upon them.

Re: Runelords IC
Liresha's permission was all that the alchemist's curiosity needed to win over his desire to take a systematic approach to searching the dungeon. In a few quick paces, Raigard is by the statue's side, prodding, probing and of course, talking
Oh look another entrance! I guess this defeats the purpose of the red doors? I wonder if they were made before the cavern systems... that would sort of make sense, since everything in this area resembles what I have read about Thassilonian architecture.
Is that a real book? says the healer, touching the statue without stopping to think if it could be cursed or trapped
And how about this weapon? Is anyone capable of detecting magic? I wonder if there is some enchantment that has kept this weapon rust free. Well, it could also be the lack of humidity in the area, but in general you would expect some corrosion over time even underground... Raigard says, pulling gently on the marvelous looking weapon

Re: Runelords IC
Freezing four steps into the rightmost corridor, the magus waited a heartbeat and then, muttering a quiet invective, backtracked to her former position. Infinite historical value, sure, but dark corridors, freaks and demon gods? A bit too much. Demons meant familiar bad news, the exact stuff she'd come all this way to avoid.
Nothing I say can convince of her beaut-- That's it, I'm not going crazy. Nier nier! This is my head, let it go, dammit.
"... Figures I'll just actually wait here while we look at that statue, mhm. Thanks May, good to know. "
The weapon didn't smell like it had any enchantments, as such. Wasn't anything in the air but the sensation of six creatures jampacked in an underground room either. But then again. Thassilon. Could be hidden, could be shrouded. Could be a dummy intended to hide the actual magical trinket somewhere, or say a cheery message when visitors joined in. Old arcanists got up to weird things.
"Ayup."
Liresha snapped her fingers once and squinted - mostly a theatrical affectation. No, the trick was to feel with the back of your head...
SpoilerDetect magic! Presence or absence of magical auras?
"Scoot, lemme see the runes. Erh, pointed slanted squiggly, square, resplendent circle of violence unfolding... Yup, that's definitively... something"
SpoilerLiresha has linguistics (1 rank) and can read Thallosian (Albeit, not well). Reading lots of old books and knowing Cyphermages from Riddleport comes in handy! Does this particular weapon have a name or bear a greeting, or tell us who this woman might be?
---
"No humidity n' a pool of water down the hall? Old looking altar, concave basin? Lamashtu? I hear vials of Rapid-Onset Painful-Deathitis sell well, yeah... Desna wept. "
That, and there were other uses for vials found at dark altars too. The kind of things she'd been trying to run from, too. Then again, goblins, caves and a half-elf lover wishing for a succubi to hold him at night. Shanks were meant to settle scores, not aid dreams, as the saying went. On the other hand, consorting with forces like that just didn't end well, as a rule. Her mouth worked that decision out faster than her brain settled the moral conundrum.
"... Bottle the lot of it, please, Raigard. It'll come in handy"
The man with the large axe had a point. Jumping at shadows might be good for getting the heart beating, yet it didn't exactly leave a mind that considered the tactical situation all that well. Focus.
"S'is right odd. One guard outside, but no one else even with a big boom? Don't think the spotter fell asleep in the crows nest, erh, that these things need much sleep. Complex is bigger than we figured, other doors, and you're right - it was freaks, so there must be more'n one. Smells like a trap, or like... "
Demons. Demons. Endless spawn of the Abyss, chaos and death made real, awkward conversations with mom so long ago and all those texts on the various manifestations poured over to get an answer.
"... Hahah. Hah. Or arrogant enough not to give a care at all to people invading home 'cause it thinks itself the biggest, baddest boss. Demon-thinking. Quasits are tiny, sprite-like things. Magicians cart 'em around - you might'ave seen a few? Dunno where they actually come from, but you'll find the occasional little helper. Spiteful fellas. Good researchers, I guess. I could get one, with some effort.
Tarok stared. Right, right - too many words. Trim out the adjectives, shorten down the appeal to books, what actually mattered?
"Sorry. Tiny. Magical. Intelligent. Wings. Zaps. Bites. Tough flesh. Spits spite, breathes hate and smells like wrath. Erh, think a tiny angry human? If it's been stuck here longer, there's no telling though. Reading books for hundreds of years'll do you a lot of anything. Hit it hard, hit it fast. Watch out for spells! Probably looks like a marine stuck on flotsam for a month, so hit the ugliest thing in there that ain't me. It can probably pull in additional aid if it gets contact out by promising our souls to something dark and dastardly?"

Re: Runelords IC
The group seemed intent on making definitive statements cloaked in the vagueness of possibilities. Lots of talk, lots of speculation, very little by way of action. The dwarf leaned against the wall, having glanced at the statue, the broken pots and urns, the altar with the dirty water, and the door. Nothing bespoke of anything in particular to him, so he didn't have anything to say just yet. Sitting for long minutes as Raigard perused EVERY inch of the statue was less than exciting, as was his sampling of water and the close consideration of the door.
At the talk of the quasit, he grunted, "Well, as long as me axe kin hurt 'em ...", before stepping close to the door to listen for signs of life from the other side, and look for signs that anyone had been through this area recently.

Re: Runelords IC
May nodded towards Tarok hearing his thanks. She watched as the alchemist seemed to go on a 'tangent' as she might put it. She looked a little uncertain at him as he seemed fascinated beyond what she would expect most ever would, particularly in a place with the risk of danger lurking inside. The last thing she wanted was to have them get in trouble. If they weren't to return, its very likely someone would eventually notice they were missing... something she already still felt bad for not mentioning at all to anyone. She knew it was likely better that way, but it still didn't help going against her normal tendencies.
Baelthor wandered forward, not seeming at all to have May's 'tolerence' as he might put it for Raigard's rampant curiosity. The Eidolon traversed forward down the hall they had been talking about, being one of the first to do such. While he wasn't about finding out things, he didn't have patience to find trivial little details that didn't matter in the least bit.
Finally as the Alchemist felt satisfaction in her research as the grouped forward, May couldn't help but gaze towards the alter. The curious girl perked a brow, looking if she could figure out more about it, looking in thought wondering what its purpose was, as well as what the strange water might be.

The Statue
The statues oozes a sense of wrath and anger. The book attached to it a purely ornamental one that is melded to the statue. The massive golden and rune inscribed ransuer glitters subtly and has a dull magical glow about it.

Re: Runelords IC
These are the Waters of Lamashtu! announces Raigard with a mixture of disgust and fascination Whatever you do, DO NOT DRINK IT! If you drink, the BEST case scenario will be HOURS of nausea
As he says that, the alchemist retrieves from his backpack gloves, goggles, a face mask and a pair of long tweezers. With extreme care, the chemist fills two glass vials with the unholy liquid, corks them and places them into a padded box
I will need to run more tests when we get out of here, but I might be able to research some formula to inoculate us against it in the future. Or I guess we could use it against other foes, but that is definitely not in the area of morality where I feel comfortableAvatar by me

"Beating someone over the head's fine, but maybe slipping 'em profane demonic essence issat step too far, yep. Shanks worked so far. Thanks Raigard, grab one for me, yeah? Nice gettup. "
Succubi are demons too...
Right.
That.
Had to find a way to turn those thoughts out of her head.
"So, the consecrated power o' demons low below... Figure Nualia had a sip, got herself that arm in the drawings? Sacrificed father, transformation, new hand, taint celestial n' profane?"
Speaking them out loud in an ancient Thassilonian complex owned by a longdead furious, mysterious Alaznist didn't exactly help as much as she thought it might. Digging through her pockets, Liresha found a kahve bean, something acidic to ease frayed nerves. Took a moment to collect her thoughts and then spoke, carefully.
"May? Who was Nualia? Pretty foundling, touch of the divine angelspawned thing, took in by Tobyn, gone inna fire - none of that really screams "Killer". What's missing? Everyone t'was all saying she was a right kind child."
Because of course someone with a touch of the celestial would be. All grace, smiles and beauty that almost hurt to look at, features too perfect and matched by far and hair with some odd, of-the-cuff color. All complete with sparkling eyes and a dazzling set of teeth to create a smile that made the sun seem dull. Probably be bad to grow up next to, something too perfect to approach, like a weird alien thing invading a pond of ducks. Oh, let's point at it. Maybe it'll do funny tricks. Oh hey! Let's try throwing sto-- Realizing she was chewing noisly and fidgeting, Liresha tried to regain some semblance of control. Years spent playing mysterious in towns and taverns and all it took to crack that was some angelgotten foundling, a couple of goblins and an old ruin covered in dust and depictions of depravity? Pits to that. That bundle of neuroses and unresolved anxiety issues could stuff itself, taint and the lot.
"People ganged up on her or teased 'er a lot 'bout her no-doubt significantly beautiful hair or didn't let her be friends with no soul or wassit?"
May had lived in Sandpoint all her life, so she had to know. There would be an explanation for all of this, somehow.
Remove her celestial taint
Liresha twitched, tightening her grip on her rapier. A joint popped.
"Ah pits. Let's kick down that door n' straight up murder everything inside, I have a host of unresolved, repressed issues I need to work out on someone else and then stubbornly, adamently refuse to think about while playing raiding a library."

Before the group goes in, Raigard also hands Tarok a small blue-colored vial
I though this might be useful to you: It provides you with a magical shield. You know, on account of the enemies bite having some adverse effects, I thought it would be most efficient to improve the defenses of the frontliners.

Khazak looked at the nasty, foul, murky sewer water and turned to Raigard solemnly. "Thank ye, lad. Ye saved me from me own thirst. Ah was jus' gonna 'ave a sip ... right after Tarok washed 'is pits with it, an' Baelthor dipped 'is infernal twig 'n berries innit!"

Re: Runelords IC
May looked at the water not to satisfied at all knowing what it was. Her lips parted as if to speak out though it was made clear before she even could by the help of the alchemist. She nodded a bit in response to his words. This place was quite clearly not a wonderful place to be. Considering that creature they encountered walking into this place, she was more and more positive dangers lurked within.
May looked to Tarok as she shook her head a bit. "I wasn't really close to her. I just recall off the top of my head that she had been in a Coma and that she was believed to have perished in the fire five years ago... but I was only 12 then." She spoke looking up biting her bottom lip looking up a bit in thought attempting to recall anything else she might of heard so long ago.
Baelthor looked over at the mumbling dwarf... or at least what he considered to be mumbling by his accent. He snarled a bit looking at him. "I had no plans to do such. Only an idiot would touch something of that nature in a place that seemed to be for warship of a foul creature." He spoke quite sharply as if insulted by the dwarves words. It was enough to cause May to shoot a glare towards him, Baelthor letting out a frusterated grunt before looking away asif being told mentally to stop without needing a single word to be mentioned.Last edited by HanaRei; 2013-10-29 at 01:23 AM.

Re: Runelords IC
The massive double doors fly open under a solid dwarven kick revealing the large cathedral like vault beyond. This huge room looks like nothing more than an immense underground cathedral.
The walls are carved with strange, spiky runes. In the centre of the room is a large pool, a ring of polished human skulls balanced on stone spikes arranged in a circle around the deeper midsection. At the far end of the room, a pair of stone stairways leads up to a pulpit on which sits a second pool, this one triangular and filled with churning, bubbling water that looks almost like translucent lava. Yet while wisps of what look like heat and steam rise from the strange orange liquid, the room itself is deathly cold.
Two of the strange creatures stand in the centre of the room paused in what must be a act of worship towards the pulpit, perched atop the pulpit itself is a demon winged demonic female creature covered in heavy patchy scaly skin. Garbed in black silk with a golden dagger clasped in a hand it screeches in rage at you, a tiny tiara balanced precariously atop its head.

Re: Runelords IC
One swift kick from Khazak's boot sent the double doors reeling and revealed an underground room eerily like the inside of a monastery. Runes in cursive script carved into the walls, a pool of something orange that bubbled and there, perched next to that very pool, a target for her current ire. She'd savor the architectural specifications later.
"I called dips! Right one! Let's test something!"
The white, thin limbed monster had nasty teeth and sharp claws but it was quite near the pool and those skulls were an apt hint that the waters weren't fit for living things. Throwing herself forward, Liresha attempted to rush the spawn and throw it off balance, trusting in her own speed and sharp contour. The impact was jarring, the monstrous thing hard and unyielding. Surprise and speed were poor replacements for training and bulk, and the damned thing seemed more perplexed than anything else as it batted her aside, none the worse for wear and not the least bit toppled or tumbled.
Infuriating, really.

Khazak looks around the room and chortles. "Well, 'ere be a fun little meetin' ... must be the Ugly Club!" Glancing at the blue vial Raigard had given him earlier, he shrugged his mighty shoulders and took a long swig. "Better taste like ale!"

As the doors fly open, Raigard watches the scene with his usual curiosity
Maybe we should consider talking to them. begins the alchemist Wait are those skulls? That is horrible, but at least that simplifies things

Re: Runelords IC
Baelthor watched as Luresha seemed to call dibs, changing towards the Sinspawn before him. The Eidolon snarked a bit at the rather awkward attempt to rush at the creature. Seeing the other one to its own devices, the beast like creature rushed at the awaiting creature hoping to tear it down quickly.
May watched as the doors came flying open, seeing the enemies before her. Attempting to try and aid as much as she could, she drew her new light crossbow, holding it a bit nervously in her hand. While she had used one before... actually firing it at someone almost terrified her, even if it was some evil creature. She pulled the trigger firing at the one Sinspawn hoping to aid Baelthor in his attack.
