It's not as high quality as other avvies I've made, but I promise to come back to this one and improve it.

Thanks! It is actually a pic of spaaaace. Specifically, the andromeda galaxy part of space.

I actually haven't drawn anything in a while, and I'm trying to get back into the "game" so that I can start a(nother) comic project. This one, hopefully, will last longer than my previous attempt.

How does one manage to draw the new style hands? I've been trying really hard on some new Hobbit-Inspired OOTS drawings, but I can't get the hands looking right. They just end up looking like horrible tentacle hand monstrosities.

You draw a normal hand. Then you make it nearly twice as thick, duplicate it, and make the copy flesh-colored. You then make it a bit under half the size of the original stroke.

    Here's the basic method:

    1. Have various overlaying objects, with an outline on top. For the wings, I had a single (super high res) picture and the wing outlines.

    2. Select what you want, then right click and go to "Set Clip"

    3. Voila!

From there you can add another outline or do more stuff to it. I just discovered how to use this tool not too long ago, so I'm still experimenting with it.

No offense to Cuthalion, but that seems quite labor intensive >_>
Personally, I do my avatars fairly big because I don't like mucking with decimals and such.
My average line stroke is 5, for eyes I do 3.5... for arms I also use a 5. I turn this into an 8 for the arms and legs (which I make normally).
From there, I turn the paths into objects which will give them an outline of 8. I lower that to a 5, select a color for skin, and call it a day.
It sounds like a tedious process due to the amount of words but it's worked for me so far and it goes by fairly quickly *shrugs*

No problem! It also helps with comic-making, as you can have a single background, pose the figures around in it, then take a panel and be like "snip".

Both ways of making noodley arms are pretty easy. Here's how you can do it the other way:

Step 1: Bring water to boil, add arms Using adjust lines by nodes tool, click "convert stroke to paths" at the top

Step 2: Pick your skin and border color, set stroke to 1/2 size (for me, it's 2 px to 1 px). Voila!

The problem with this method is that adjusting the appendage/extremity afterwards can be a pain, since now your normally just-a-stroke object is an actual object . However, it also lets you customize the object a bit more, meaning you can easily add claws, talons, change the dimensions for a differently angled shot, etc.

I use Paint.NET, so things might not transfer over, however:

I draw all my work on a 480/480 image (although I usually zoom in 200% - my eyes aren't what they used to be) and then resize to 120/120. Usual line thickness is 7 pixel (or 8 if I want it zoomed in a little). Which means my lines end up a little thicker than 2 pixels (uh... how can that be ;^). For new hands, I found 15 for the outline and 7 for the flesh looks best. I and I just draw 2 both layers on different layers.

    Size at drawing:

Maple has too changed. I altered her snout a little (I am really bad at drawing animals, and she's about as good as she's ever gonna get)!
Also, more upgrades, because I'm just updating all of OotP's major characters (regardless of whether they've appeared in comic or not yet), so Team Evil.

Violet and Marissa/Aeryil look 10 billion times better.
It's definitely getting a reboot soon.

    Edit:
And we certainly can't forget the characters from alignment shift.

Rather well done for your first OOTS-style art. A few recommendations. You might want to try Inkscape, it will be easier to draw and won't have that pixellated look. I'd also make the head larger, and curve the arms and legs somewhat. Otherwise, quite well done.

Thank Youy Very Much for tips. Already installing the Inkscape, the image is too obviously done at Paint (Win7), using it remembered my childhood (such nostalgic wow too much pixels hahaha)...

Larger head and curving arms and legs, checked.

    *Snip tons of images*
I dunno, it all looks like you just took a template and added stuff to it. There's no variability. The line thickness is not the best, you don't make differences between outlines and details, and those details you do put in are all in black, so most of it looks kinda out of place.
Then there's the size of the eyes, it's too big. Barbossa is the best example of this.

On Gandalf, those lines on the clothing look really weird. Are they supposed to be pattern, or folds? His hat could do with some work as well.

Saruman's eyes look awful. Smaller, and with a finer outline, maybe? Also, the bags under the eyes look weird. Try making the lines "dark-flesh" toned. That way they accentuate the look of age.

Tyrion looks like he's normal sized. The ratio between the size of the head, the body and the length of arms and legs is the same as that of a normal human. IIRC, he's a "dwarf".

Finalle, the poses. The feet look weird. In the old OotS design the feet went sideways, but in the updated one there can be seen feet going towards the viewer, meaning a more 3D cartoonish view. Check on that and maybe excercise with some of it.

My definite favorite is the 2nd one. It's an amazing design.
Also, the last one (Kerrigan? I have no idea who it is) I love the shading on it. Simple but it's there.

I made a gift for a friend, it's his Starbound hylotl.

You want to know what sucks? I have to draw those again because Inkscape decided to corrupt the file instead of saving it and my most recent recovery point didn't have those designs (luckily, those are the only thing I lost).

Shush you, it's really just playing around. The trick is minding the colors and not the actual "filling". I usually draw these at like 200 or 300% zoom, and I just scratch the colors. Once done, and back to its original size, it looks better.

    ---

I would say what I like best from that image is the sitting position. I'm not too sure about the light.
Maybe you need to shade his cloting as well so the contrast really kicks in. The cave "depth" could also do with more concise figures, rather than seemingly random curves.

I am new to this and just finished my first avatar with Inkscape.

However the size is a little small and frankly I have no idea what I did lol. I followed the guide and downloaded some reference pictures and I thought the size looked pretty much the same, apparently I was wrong.
After I uploaded her to to the avatar window I noticed she is a little small compared to all the other avatars and I tried to resize her in Inkscape to 120/120... however it only gave me the option 117/120. (If that makes sense)

So now I have two questions:

    1. Is there any way to make her bigger? (In the avatar window here on the forum)

    2. How do I start drawing on a 480/480 window? Do I make a square in these dimensions and then start drawing? (Please put into consideration that I've never done this before, so be patient with me. )

If you want to make her bigger, export her at a larger size. It looks like she is at maximum for the vertical dimension, so you might end up cutting her off on the top or bottom.

Go to File > Document Properties, and it will have inputs for document size.

    I hope that helps.
