Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
Started playing Resonant Rise since the number of players on ShneekeyCraft pack are at 0 for the past couple of weeks, I figure it's mostly dead.
It's certainly different. Those who want All The Things(tm) are likely going to enjoy it.SpoilerQuite possibly, the best rebuttal I have ever witnessed.

Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
It's a 1.6.4 mod pack. It uses something called the AT Launcher, which just links to the pages of mods they're not allowed to distribute, so you can download them.
I know nothing more since I don't play 1.6.4, because there's no Thermal Expansion.

Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
To expand upon what Triaxx has said (and by the way, Thermal Expansion 3 is in early alpha testing, so your wish might be granted...)
The ATLauncher is also the launcher that both ShneekeyCraft and Resonant Rise is hosted through. As Triaxx said, because we don't want to offend mod authors (and please, let's not get into another twelve-page debate on that) the ATLauncher has a clever solution for including mods in mod packs without actually distributing the mods. Basically, it will pop up the mod author's download site so you can manually download and include it in your game.
Resonant Rise is... different. And huge. It contains Ars Magika 2, Thaumcraft 4, IC2-ex, and a BUNCH of other mods. Seriously, go check it out.
If you consider packs like Unleashed or Unhinged to be 'mainstream' packs, I'd call Resonant Rise an 'indie' pack. Go check it out.SpoilerQuite possibly, the best rebuttal I have ever witnessed.

Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
So having played on the snapshot server for a bit, I've worked out I'm not a fan of Amplified Terrain, at least for a general survival world. It's a giant pain to navigate with hunger an issue, there's no flat ground anywhere and there's so much noise: disconnected blocks and chunks of mountain everywhere. I cruised around for a while looking for a build site that caught my eye, and nothing ever did, it's crazy mountains pretty much all the time, so nothing stands out.
I think the best world-gen type is Large Biomes. While in HC2 it was a hassle to find new biomes, the large biomes did make for some epic scenery and a map that felt so much more "worldy" than the patchwork effect of the regular gen. Which is still present to an extent in 1.7.

Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
While Large Biomes works well for building, it's a pain to find some or the rarer resources sometimes. Jungles and snow biomes don't provide too many necessary resources, but they can be nice to have. In the past I've had problems finding witches in nonstandard world gens, but now that they spawn in dim areas that shouldn't be a problem (I haven't actually updated to 1.7 due to waiting on mods).

Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
Hm... yeah, I get what you mean. So best would be some terrain generation that's Large and has only the mountain biomes be Amplified. (Well, some of them)
As far as I can tell Amplified does not contain any steppes or any sort of flat terrain in general, which is somewhat of a downfall of that.
(I wonder if the generation can be switched back to Large now without there being ugly seams at the borders...)

Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
hm, alright then. I a bout of madness a backup of the snapshot server has been made and the world generation changed to LARGE BIOMES. See if the borders aren't too bad.
If they are we'll revert back.

Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
I think the terrain generator didn't take, I just traveled to z:-4500, still amplified terrain. I did find a few horses around x:13 y:94 z:2052.

Every time I launch a pack using ATlauncher, it almost loads, then closes the Minecraft instance and reopens the main part of the launcher.

Re: Minecraft Thread XII: Don't Kick the Bukkit
I think it is large biomes, I spawned in on the side of a cliff in a mountainous area but not extreme like amplified. Problem is, I have no idea where I am and dying doesn't take me back to my house, so I don't know if the area we all built in still exists.

How so? I've had a few games where I spawned in Extreme Hills and had no problems.
