Passage to Paradise

[madtinker]

"Too true! Hey, isn't that your pa?" On the path ahead you see a stout man in a leather apron and greying hair hurrying towards your group of hunters.

[Manwhoisthisman]

"Ah, yeah, that's him. Hey! Da'! Everyone's made it back in one piece, but we've got one that needs to see Father Feodor, have you seen him about?"

[madtinker]

Your father trots up, obviously relieved to see you in one piece. "He's on his way, wasn't a minute behind me. Is that bo bad hurt?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

"He's through the worst of it now, I think, but he's still a bit weak."

[madtinker]

"and you and Sam both look like you took a thrashing. What happened out there?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

"A couple of glindwings and a couple of clawfoots took exception to the tree felling. Not together, thank heavens. Tom took care of us pretty well though... well, well enough anyway."

[madtinker]

Sam chimes in with, "Plus a giant razor tooth!"

At your father's confused look, Tom explains "We were attacked by a beast I've never seen before, but your son aquited himself well all around. You can be proud of him, Jonas."

Your father nods and smiles. "I should have known he wouldn't stick to candle wax for long."

[Manwhoisthisman]

"Actually da', I used some of that today too."

[madtinker]

"Did you now? this I have to hear. What good can candle wax do against a clawfoot?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

"Against a clawfoot, not that much, but under a green shrub it can smoke out a glidewing."

[madtinker]

"Ah ha! clever boy."

He's about to say more, but Father Feodor rushes up to Georg. Touching him with one hand, holding his sundisk in the other, he mumbles a prayer. Georg's eyes flutter open. "You can put him down, he should be able to stand. Was anybody else hurt?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

I ramble, "Yeah, Sam and I both got hit a little, but we're alright. I didn't really look at Tom, he seemed fighting fit but I'm sure he also got some scrapes. Petr, I haven't even thought to ask, how are you?"

[madtinker]

Tom cuts you off with "A man fell from the palisade catwalk. He's back there, still unconscious I think."

"I'll fix you boys up after I see to him." He bustles off toward the rear of your little column.

"I'm alright Tobias, just glad I don't have to carry this sad sack (jerking his thumb at his brother) the rest of the way to the village."

Georg, on his own feet for the first time in several hours, glances around. "Glad to see you too. What happened?"

Petr answers, "You were mauled by a clawfoot. I thought you were a goner, but Tom gave you one of the Father's potions. And then a giant razortooth attacked the palisade wall."

Georg processes this all for a second and asks, "What's a giant razortooth?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

I shoot Sam a grin and add in, "You know, a thunder lizard. Big scaly thing, little arms."

[madtinker]

Sam holds his elbows to his side and jumps at Georg, fingers crooked to represent claws. "Rawr! Kind of like this, only as tall as the wall and teeth as long as daggers. You've never seen one?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

I chuckle, "Ok, but really I don't think you missed too much."

[madtinker]

Father Feodor returns. "I see you both were injured. Let Pelor ease your pain."

"Thank you Father," mumbles Sam.

Father Feodor obliges him by casting another spell of healing. Color returns to Sam's face, and for the first time since the clawfoot attack he looks like himself.

"And you Tobias?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

"Yes, thank you Father."

[madtinker]

Again the muttered prayer. You feel all trace of soreness and pain evaporate as you recover (1d8+3)[10] hp.

"Take better care of each other," the priest entreats, then he falls back to speak with Tom.

Your father slaps you heartily on the back. "Well, we best hurry along. Your mother was in a state when we found put where you'd gone. Best head back and put her worries to rest."

[Manwhoisthisman]

I nod, "Yes, we had better."

[madtinker]

You both trot ahead of the main group and in a few minutes are in town. Climbing through the main street you arrive home just as the last light of twilight fades.

Entering the candle shop you head up the stairs to the family living quarters, where you mother has dinner waiting for the two of you. As you open the door, your mother looks up and smiles. "Thank Pelor you're safe!"

[Manwhoisthisman]

"Yeah, of course, mom," after a brief pause to whiff the air, "Smells good, what's for dinner?"

[madtinker]

"Clawfoot chili. You go wash up. Devian and Loren will be here soon, and you can tell us all about the world outside."

(Devian is your oldest brother, and his wife is Loren. They have two kids, Igor and Sasha. He is set to inherit the candleshop but they live in their own house down the hill until your father is ready to retire.)

I look visibly ill at the thought of eating clawfoot.

[madtinker]

Concerned, your mother asks, "Are you sure you're alright? Perhaps you should lie down?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

"Sorry, I guess I just got more tired today than I thought. Get me up when Devian gets here?"

[madtinker]

"Oh that's too bad. I'll just..."

At that moment you here familiar footsteps coming up the stairs. The kids make it up first, full of energy and ready to play with their favorite uncle.

[Manwhoisthisman]

"Sasha! Igor! How are you today?"

[madtinker]

their high pitched voices chime together, "Good."

"papa said you went outside the wall."

"was is scawwy?"

[Manwhoisthisman]

"It was scary, but we're safe here inside the wall."
