    Default The OotS Magic Compendium

    - The Order of the Stick Magic Compendium -
    A Reference Project


    This project is an effort to list all the spells referenced or used in the Order of the Stick comic in alphabetical order, and then link to all occurances of said spell. This is to see the difference in appearance of the spells, have a way to quickly see who is casting in what situations, see what spells are cast more often, and perhaps eventually, have an explaination of how each spell works within the comic. Some are as the SRD would state, but others are the Giant's own creation. This project was inspired when I wondered which spell was cast the most in the comic, and kind of grew into this fairly quickly.

    How to Contribute:


    Any help you'd care to give to this thread to make it more successful is welcome! However, there are a few things we ask you consider before submitting!
    • If you see a spell that's missing, please post at least a link to the update, and name it, so that I can quickly reference it.
    • There are MANY spells that need to be added to the list from the Unknown Spells section. I would love help to rectify that!
    • I'm human, and make mistakes. Please point them out in a kind fashion so that I may fix them! That goes for suggestions on format as well!
    • Please refrain from debating any moral details within the comic here, we are not interested in what spell is morally Good or Evil, but rather what is Accurate or Not, and I would prefer not getting this thread locked by such conversation.

    • Why do you have a spell that's obviously "X" in the unknown spell list?

      While there are some spells that are obvious, if they are unstated at the time they are cast, I'd rather be sure by someone seconding my assumption than misplacing it in the list. If you see something obvious, tell me why! List a reference, please.

    • Why do you have some class abilities in this?

      Many class abilities look like spells in the comic, and since this compendium is for people who don't know D & D as much as much as it is for people who DO know D & D, I felt these abilities worth listing. If you see something that's an obvious class ability, let me know, and I'll denote which class it is a feature of, and put it into the Class Feature section.

    • Why don't you have "X" spell listed if it was interupted/counterspelled/mentioned?

      Well, that's a product of going through the comic and seeing a spell in the comic, but not counting it as part of the list because it wasn't completed. As I got farther into the comic, I started to question if that was such a good idea. SO, I may have some listed in here that were countered, and others that aren't. In essence, if you see a spell mentioned, or not successful, and it isn't in here, go ahead and let me know, and I'll add it in.

    • Are you going to include bonus material that isn't online?

      I'm not sure. It's hard to reference to the source material when its not online, but I suppose I could reference the page number or comics it's in between. Not to mention, I don't own most of the books. What do YOU think?

    • Why is "Counterspell" listed as it's own spell when it's not really in D & D?

      Counterspell is significant in that it uses a spell slot to counter a spell, but is not a specific spell. A spell can be countered several different ways, but since the comic does not depict which way the caster is using to counter a spell, and since a spell is being used to counter a spell, I thought it prudent to just list it as its own spell (especially since that is what the caster names it when he or she is casting, similar to other spells and abilities).

    That said, I reckon you should probably include spells that are interrupted too. You've already included the unsuccessful spells from #792, and we know, for example, that Horrid Wilting exists in OotS, even if we never see it actually used.

    There's another instance of Baleful Polymorph in #176, too - it's identified by V in the next strip.

    A celestial fish of can-be-caught-on-a-hook size could only be Summon Monster I, cast as a Lawful and Good spell.

    But that spell picked one from the Lawful Good plane. Though I suppose a DM could rule that Summon Monster I with a Neutral Good caster went to Celestia rather than Elysium...I'd think the DM was kinda odd, m'self.

    There are a lot of non-spell explanations for the poofing desk in the Summon Desk link.

    That's not how Summon Monster spells work. The alignment is based on the creature, not the caster. We know it must be Good, because it's a celestial fish, but beyond that the Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic component doesn't always follow a particular pattern. For example, a celestial dog is LG while a celestial monkey is CG. Why? Who the heck knows.

    Under "Disintegrate", #638 is listed even though the spell isn't cast in that comic, #653 is listed twice, and #900 is not listed at all.

    Under "Shapechange", Vaarsuvius did not cast it a second time in #649. That spell has a duration of 10 minutes per level, and the caster can change shape an unlimited number of times while it lasts. (Yes, it is very powerful.)

    I'll work on the formatting tomorrow. Just wanted to get it put up at first, and make it a little more pretty later. I like the suggestion.

    I appreciate the editorial help. First draft generally gets some mistakes, as you can see.

    Counterspell I'm going to count in this comic as a "spell" since it's said when it's "cast". Perhaps an explanation can be put into it's description. Moved Elan's strip 19 illusion. That was based on a change in how I did things after the first couple strips, and not realizing I hadn't switched that one. Made Turn and Bolster Undead labeled as "Cleric Class Features". Thanks!

    Hrmm. Alright the 638 got changed to 640, where it does happens. I might have accidentally double posted 653, or it could be a copy and paste error from a later strip....As for 900, it looked like Disintegrate to me too, but I wanted a second opinion since it wasn't explicitly stated in comic.

    As for shape change, since it's an occurrence of the effect again, I'll count it as a separate occurrence, but perhaps I'll note something like (same spell from last entry) since I don't tag twice to the number of times something happens in the same thread like several sendings. It's a new occurrence of it, even if the spell is in the same duration.

    Do mentions of spells count (the spell is mentioned in the comic, but not actually cast or attempted)? If so, a bunch were mentioned in 049. They are Dispel Magic, Feather Fall, Fireball, Fly, Haste, Lightning Bolt, Meteor Swarm, Time Stop, Vampiric Touch, and Wish.

    The context is that V is trying to trade for a spell, listing spells that he would allow Zz'dtri to copy in exchange for fly. With the possible exception of Meteor Swarm, Time Stop, and Wish, the spells that V lists are assumed to be in his spell book, and thus castable (those three could just be outlandish suggestions on V's part to try and get Z to answer anything other than negative, so V may not be able to actually cast any of those (particularly wish))

    Edit: Also, the spell "Protection from Fire" is missing from the list. It was cast twice in 052

    You listed "Weather Control." It's actually "Control Weather." In the following strip, an angel is talking to Thor about it, and refers to it as such. Durkon was just chanting the name over and over, and it happened to "zoom in" (for want of a better term) on his speech while he was saying "weather."

    That's a very impressive accomplishment. I'm sure it must have been lots of work, and I really hate to suggest even more work, but I will.

    First a nitpick: I would change Death Ward to "Death Ward, Mass", and then you can skip the notations after each instance. The second one failed, and that should be noted.

    As far as more work, ideally this database should have

    • who cast the spell
    • did it fail
    • was it cast via a scroll, wand, staff, or rune/sigil, or class feature
    • was it a counterspell
    • multiple instances on a page


    and maybe some other info I'm not thinking of. OK, that's a lot more work, especially the part about caster. And I can totally understand you not wanting to go to the effort to gather this additional info. But if you do, you could use the reserved post to crosslist all spells by caster. That would be even more impressive.

    As far as counterspell, AIUI, a counterspell is a casting of the same spell as the spell being countered but cast in some manner that cancels the original. So they can be counted as an instance of the same spell, only note that they are a counterspell.

    By multiple instances, I mean the same spell cast by the same person in the same strip. This isn't too common, but there are times when someone does more than one of the same Cure * Wounds, or V casts more than one Disintegrate or X spams Drain Energy.

    Now if you do decide to add info about caster, here's a thread with all Elan's castings. That'll give you a bit of a start. Note that he frequently casts illusions without saying which one. I assumed that any that talk are Major Image and the rest are Silent Image. I could be wrong on these, of course. And I do wonder what spell he cast for the celestial tree sloth, since it's touching Sabine and none of the illusion spells include tactile effects.

    Anyway, good job on collecting this info.

    Before catching up on these posts, I wanted to address this one, because I wanted to state my predicament in this. My character count for the second post is already above 30K on the material alone. Cleaning up the links adds more characters, and the table would add more. Judging at how many are in the work page, and that there will be more updates, I don't think a table will work, mostly because eventually even without it I'm likely going to hit the character limit, and then extend the list to a second post. Since, as you point out, a table wouldn't be very effective when split between two posts, it seems to me it's not going to be a great option.

    Which is sad, because I LOVE tables, and am pretty well versed on them.

    If you have any solutions to these problems, however, or other suggestions on format, I'd love to have input.
