Do we want to track the vampire Blood Drain ability? It's Ex, rather than Su or Sp, but it is a special ability of a magical creature. The same is true of his Spider Climb ability.

Why should a man be scorned if, finding himself in prison, he tries to get out and go home? Or if, when he cannot do so, he thinks and talks about other topics than jailers and prison-walls?

Don't know if you accept speculation, but the spells in strip 14 appear to be daze monster and greater magic weapon.

Greater magic weapon is the only of the cleric spells that applies specifically to weapons that has a range greater than touch, requires verbal (Durkon's mouth is open), Somatic (He's waving the spell glowy hand around), and divine focus (note that he is holding his holy symbol aloft in his other hand) components.

Daze monster is single target and ranged. It also has no components at all, and V is neither speaking nor gesturing.

I won't attempt to speculate on why Durkon would wait to use such a long term buff at the end of the day, but V being close to empty would explain why they used such a low level spell comparatively.

Edit: While I'm at it, I believe the spell Xykon kills the flying woman with in 448 to be energy drain due to the lack of verbal component and no apparent need to actually gesture, and the fact that receiving negative levels equal to or greater than one's level kills you outright. I suppose it could also be still (?) silent finger of death. I do know for a fact that it is not an inflict wounds spell of any sort as the first post speculates, as those are all divine spells and Xykon is purely an arcane caster.

When the SRD leaves out most of a spell's description, with "As (lesser spell) but..." - refer back to the lesser spell for missing details.

So - you'd use Daze - which does have components.

A similar principle would apply to Create Greater Undead as compared to Create Undead - it isn't componentless - it uses the components of the lesser spell.

Or, for Energy Drain - you'd use Enervation - which has a Verbal and a Somatic component.

Any indication on what level of Summon Monster did Hylgia use to summon four Anarchic Giraffes?

Still trying to guess which Summon Monster Hylgia used.

For al that have neen discussed on the matter, it seems the Giraffes are similar to bisons, and should be summoned by Summon Monster III. Thus, she would have used Summon Monster V to get four of them.

If it really gets to that point I'll bring it up for discussion. Ultimately, I'm not ready to give up this or other projects just yet. Its likely not a long term issue, just a current one while I get adjusted and clean up the messes.

The Energy Drains in 1117 failed. Need to note that.

I don't see any unknown spell in 1117, except for Ponchulas in the last panel. She certainly wasn't summoning a monster with that. I expect it was just preparing to cast the Sound Lance, which she did in panel 1 of 1118. Sometimes the dweomer shows up in the panel before a spell is actually cast and I think that's what happened here.

The way you wrote it makes it look like you're not even sure what the spell was, not just uncertain about the specific level of the spell. Instead of saying "Unknown (summon monster ?)", say "Summon Monster (level ?)" or something like that.

Interesting enough, although X is the most common letter to indicate an unknown value, we can't use Summon Monster X in this case...

Not sure why I'm doing this, but...

776 Amplify Sound -- not a standard spell, but you can see the dweomer when it's cast.

1123: Flame Strike; Cure Serious Wounds (failed); Green Energy
1125: Cure Moderate Wounds (failed); Dispel Magic (mention); Green Energy; Sword return
1126: vampiric energy drain; Green Energy; Anti-Life Shell; Sword return; Blindness (cast here but the effects not seen until 1127)
1127: Blindness; Remove Blindness (mention); Green Energy; Boots of Speed
1128: Green Energy; Flame Strike (Empowered); Raise Dead
1130: Protection from Evil (cloak clasp)
    1131: Dismiss Anti-Life Shell

    Continuing spells and effects:

    Anti-life Shell -- 1127-1131
    Blindness -- 1128
    Boots of Speed -- 1128
Protection from Evil (cloak clasp) -- 1131
    Vampiric Domination -- 1123-1131

Are we counting staking of vampires? There's been several of those.

776 Amplify Sound -- not a standard spell, but you can see the dweomer when it's cast.
    Thank you for doing this!

I wonder if there's a spell we could fit with this that amplifies a targets voice. Was 5th edition around when that strip was made? I don't think it was, but maybe its booming voice? If not we can just go with Amplify Sound, but there's gotta be something, right? Amplify Sound in the 3.5 spell compendium is something different, so that makes this worse.

Are we counting staking of vampires? There's been several of those.
What would staking even be considered? My gut says no, as its not a spell or spell like ability.

Not a magical ability, but perhaps a magical disability. Normally, being poked with a wooden stake would not kill a D&D character unless they're 4th edition minions, but it does for vampires. Exposure to direct sunlight would be another disability.

Yeaaaaah, I see what you're saying. But then we might have to start doing that for other things too. It opens a can of worms, one i'm not fully sure of the ramifications of. Anyone else have any opinions on it?

I agree with your assessment. I don’t see the value in tracking staking, and it could create really weird precedents.

    Ah yes, the Dungeon-Kruger effect.

Vampires have no particular weakness to "someone did a trivial amount of damage to me with a stake." A stake through the heart would kill anybody. "Belkar can't possibly do as much damage as this webcomic just indicated he does," in every context, should leave the Order of the Stick forum for the Here We Optimize By The Letter of D&D Rulez forum.
