Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Actually, those are not the borderline cases I was thinking about, Mallorean Thug. They're clearly outside the genre. Girls und Panzer is an underdog sports story with a close focus on the team coming together and preparing for their big tournament, with a huge side order of military nerdinesss. The team just happens to be cute girls. Bodacious Space Pirates on the other hand is a modernized version about those old books about a boy going to sea and becoming a man, just with a girl instead, in space and a whole lot less racism.
The two borderline shows I was thinking about are Azumanga Daioh, which is as much gag comedy as cute girls doing cute things, and Maria Watches Over Us, which is as much soap opera and drama as it is cute girls doing cute things. Yet both also undeniably hold elements of the cute girls doing cute things genre, as what the characters are doing is less important than who they're doing it with in both cases, just like it's easy to look back on both shows and see their formative influence in creating the genre.
The fourth one I was thinking about is really quite obvious when you stop to think. It's K-On, the show that more than anything else defines the entire genre and what it is. It has relatively light comedy, that I still find very funny, and a whole lot of focus on how the relationship between the girls develop. The latter is unfortunately mostly pushed out of the first season that most people will watch first, but it's still clearly there in both the second season and the movie.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Wait, what - Tokyo Ghoul ENDED?! And here I was, thinking that it finally started for real. Of course, it is a manga adaptation and I suppose the manga is still on-going (and thus, there would be no real resolution). However, to me, there was no resolution at all. Okay, Kaneki did finally decide to grow some guts (pun intended), and that was quite cool. But it does not resolve any of the storylines.
Dang. What a bummer...Originally Posted by Joseph Joestar (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
I'm pretty sure Tokyo Ghoul's manga is over or ending soon. I'll marathon the anime after I'm caught up-- I don't want to be in two different parts of the story at once. I've heard it's either really good or really bad, but whatever; as a fan of the manga about halfway in, I'll more than likely enjoy it a lot.
Nozaki-kun was such a great show. I usually don't have a desire to read the manga (or books or whatever) after seeing the anime, but in this case I'm totally looking into it. The characters were such a joy, and the comedy hit home every time. Definitely left me wanting more.
The ending was fantastic, in my opinion, even if they never animate any more. I can't believe how much of an actual edge-of-my-seat notion I was feeling. Even by the end, I still couldn't feel confident in guessing what Nozaki was thinking.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Masochism, probably. Hoping that eventually Bones would deliver on gorgeous 2d mecha fight scenes. Thinking Enokido might be going somewhere with the plot.
Oh, I'd definitely agree with that. I just wasn't sure how far you were stretching the boundary, and hadn't remembered you raving about anything else that would even qualify recently. I wasn't thinking about older shows that came before the CGDCT genre was solidified by
I thought that this would have been one of your picks, but then I doubted myself based on the language you used in your post.
Well, Maria Watches Over us will probably go in my queue, but sadly I've already tried both Azumanga Daioh and K-ON, and neither really clicked for me, mostly because of a disconnect on sense of humor. That was years ago though, so maybe current me will like them better . . . but even then I'll probably give a show I haven't dropped already priority over one I have.
Its a manga adaption, and as such is intended to get you to read the manga. Cliffhangers are pretty great for that. However, I'd have to disagree that it didn't have any resolution. Sure it didn't resolve any plot, but it finished out the only interesting character arc in the show, and with it, delivered very effectively on the show's themes.
Unfortunately, the manga actually finished the same day the anime finished so the chances of a second season are pretty low. This season was probably a great sales push for the last two volumes of the manga, but a future second season wouldn't have anything to advertise.
EDIT:
At this point, you should definitely wait until all the volumes of the BluRays are out to marathon the series. The tv airing was heavily, heavily censored, with a lot of gory scenes completely obscured by black. I'm not saying this as somebody who likes excessive gore (I don't), just that several scenes completely lost their punch because characters were reacting in a horrified manner to something the director intended for me to see, but was covered up by the censor.Last edited by mallorean_thug; 2014-09-23 at 01:00 PM.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
I watched the first episode and decided against continuing because it reminded me far too much of School Rumble. Seems my instinct was correct.
One of the worst examples of this I can recall was Deadman Wonderland, which took the entire screen black for several plot-critical scenes. Why even air it at all if you can't show significant portions of the plot??

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
I'll have to look into this. One of my friends is sometimes in need of sweet/enjoyable stuff that doesn't get heavy, dark, and/or emotionally dramatic (because while that stuff can be really good, it's not so good when one is in a difficult emotional spot and/or under heavy stress), and this sounds like it could be some such thing.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
My, my - HunterxHunter (2011) ended, and there has been no mention of the last episode yet. Mayhap it's because we all knew it was coming? (Well, obviously all those who were watching the series weekly.)
It is actually ironic how good I felt about the ending, compared to my reaction to Tokyo Ghoul's ending. I would have preferred HunterxHunter to continue because I enjoyed it so much more, but I am happy about its ending. (Also, there's the fact that this way it will not degenerate into an endless stream of filler.) With Tokyo Ghoul, I was unhappy of how it ended and left so many things unresolved although I am relatively indifferent towards its lack of continuation.Last edited by VariSami; 2014-09-24 at 10:24 AM.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Really enjoyed that final episode of HxH, they wrapped things up quite well.
I am curious though, can someone give me (as spoiler-free as possible) the difference between the manga and the anime for the last few episodes?
Spoiler: Guesses about what they changedFrom guessing:
1) It looked like they cut off an arc about Pariston being a villain, what with the task force going to retrieve the Chimera Ant eggs.
2) Killua leaving Gon, which I would imagine was not the case.
3) The stuff Ging said about the Chimera Ants coming from outer space sounded accurate - that's a plot hook for a future arc if I ever heard one.
4) Was Gon supposed to actually meet Ging? I know they ended the first anime with them meeting after the Greed Island Arc, and I only found out with the second anime that was actually Kite.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
I'll probably do that, then. I've seen heavily censored anime before and it really does detract massively from the experience.
Also, apparently the Tokyo Ghoul anime is getting a second season in January. I guess I'll wait for that, too.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
I can't remember everything, since I haven't read the manga in a bit, but:
Spoiler
1. I think that was cut.
2. I don't actually remember if Gon and Killua went off to do their own things. The next chapters of the manga don't actually focus on them, but on Ging.
3. They don't actually come from outer space, but come from beyond the known edge of the world. Turns out the known map of the world is not the full planet. The edges of the world are super dangerous.
4. Gon did meet Ging up on top of a tree in the manga.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Spoiler: (belated) Aldnoah finale
First: *insert obvious necrophilia joke*
Now that that's put of the way, I'd say burial. Unless she really has survived because she's way fitter than she looks and Saazbaum is a crappy shot.
Am I the only one who felt the writing mostly really went downhill towards the end? The lat turns of Rayet's story?! Inaho is going to take down the guy who helped him fight a Kataphract but next episode gives a pep speech to the girl who basically murdered the princess and almost killed them all? Way to go, cool-headed protagonist. And then the princess cheers when Rayet has a (totally unexpected) turn of heart and appears next to her in a Kataphract. I'd be scared sh*tless she suddenly turns again and decides to step on my jeep.
Not that Rayet isn't kind of an interesting character, but she's still quite a bitch and I'd only trust her as far as I can throw her.
And this finale... when did Slaine catch the idiot ball? WHY would he protect Saazbaum, because of the ten second scene with the other Martian? btw, what did he intend to do with a gun against that Kataphract? What was that bs about "ending the cycle of hatred" shortly before the three mechas went through the wall? You started the freaking war, *******, unless you are as crazy as Char/Milliardo and plan to create peace by killing of most of humanity. You wanted revenge or something, but certainly not peace. And you never seemed so stupid before. Except when you told Slain your plan instead of using him to find out where the princess went. I guess it was because *use Zuko voice* "honor".
(Sidenote: I'd not be surprised if Saazbaum actually powered up the Tharsis because he in his genius knew how stupid Slain would be and expected him to interfere on his behalf. Maybe he injected him with stupid while he had him captive...)
The combining mecha was... stupid, too. Not totally mind numbing but definitely not needed. Also, I'm sure he could have won if he didn't fight like an idiot who just got handed a box of grenades. This suit had so many ways to take out Inaho, but he somehow decided to use them in a manor which would lead to him losing. Good job!
The finale wasn't all bad, if Inaho is actually dead we may lose a decent protagonist but we actually see what war is like... but some things just really annoyed me. See above.
Rant over.
Overall... the show is still decent and great at times and I kind of like the slightly more realistic war tone even if still far from an actual "war" but this finale and the way towards it... I'll have to see if I care for the next season. I'll look into it at least.

I gaze upon the CAT HAT and for a moment I forget, transfixed as I am by its felid majesty. But then the moment passes and once more I feel this gaping emptiness, this void left by something indescribably precious that has been torn from us. I weep, knowing that no more shall there be DATABASE DATABASE LIVING IN THE DATABASE WOW WOW.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
I keep seeing and hearing good things about that anime.
But then I glimpse the black-white furry that seems to be one of the main characters of that series and turn around to go watch something else in my free time. I don't hate furries per se, but that particular design completely turns me off.
Cat Hat still looks awesome. Cat face not so much.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
I actually quite enjoy animal ears and tails and love it even when normal human characters dress up like that for fanservice, either male or female. It's just when the face itself starts becoming a human-animal hybrid that I do mind.
Speaking of which, one of my current favorite readings is Centaur's Worries.
Spoiler: First volume main cover and back
That happens in an alternate modern Earth where everybody is some kind of human-beast combination. But they still have human faces, so I quite enjoy their designs.
Ok, later on they have one race with full animal head, but I managed to tolerate that particular faction, since
Spoiler
the serpent-headed people actually put their long heads with sharp fangs to pratical use. Also the author doesn't try to make their faces any kind of strange human-beast hybrid.
Anybody else around here reading it?Last edited by deuterio12; 2014-09-29 at 01:09 AM.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Just finished re-watching Gurren Lagann with a friend who hadn't seen it before. Why does Dave Mallow not have more major roles, he's amazing as the Anti-Spiral.
On a related note, the next series I intend to show to the friend in question is Madoka Magica. Hopefully some time within the next week while he's still hopped up on TTGL hype.
I'm a bad person.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Yup, been reading it for a while. It's good, and super cute when the younger kids are involved, but a little odd; I can't tell if the digressions into history and politics and mysterious UFO happenings are building to something, or just the author indulging in worldbuilding. I'm also a little leery of recommending it to people because it sounds like something rooted in fetishism, and there are a handful of points where it seems to be skirting close to that, but it might just be innocently weird.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Hmm, excellent question. I believe it's either the author having mood changes ("this week I'm depressed, so here's bloody conflict or conspiracy theories"), or he's just messing with our minds for the lulz (like the episodes where they suddenly turn into D&D/videogame adventurers)
Magic Girl Democracy in particular is definitely parody.
On the other hand one thing Centaur's Worries definitely considers one of its secondary themes is racism. We see an ongoing struggle of conflict, misunderstanding and ignorance between the different fantasy races just because they have different bodies, with hints that it was much worst on the past, but it's still there on the present.
Also there's some supernatural bits like that ghost. Unless it's also UFOs.
I didn't really sense any fetichism over the norm. If anything, I would say it's one of the least fetichist mangas out there, because it dares to have a bunch of sentient races without any actual human character!Last edited by deuterio12; 2014-09-29 at 04:17 PM.

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Spoiler: Thoughts on Madoka
I actually think it works precisely because Gurren Lagann and Madoka Magica are works that have a massive amount in common. They wield the tools of deconstruction in a reconstructionist way.
Gurren Lagann systematically goes through every era of mecha anime with reckless abandon, and then builds its own thesis of mecha anime on top of them.
Madoka Magica cuts through the bright lights of the mahou shoujo genre in order to reveal its heart: the emotional ties that bind the protagonists and the ineffable power of love. Before one calls it a deconstruction, they ought to think well on the fact that the series ended with the defeat of despair through the ascendancy of hope, empowered by Homura's love for Madoka.
So, both series were an expression of pure defiance in the face of ultimate crushing despair, crashing through to bring goodness to everyone and daring anyone else to say likewise.
To sum up:
(Yes, I just made this meme thing.)

Re: General Anime/Manga Discussion: Where Are We Golgoing 13?
Please no. Gurren Lagann is not a reconstruction or a deconstruction, and the "it goes through every era of mecha, starting light and silly, slowly becoming more serious, then dropping into deep angst, then becoming idealistic and upbeat again" idea only betrays that whoever claims it is not very familiar with mecha shows and thinks that Evangelion started an era of serious and angsty mecha shows.
