Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
True.
Thank you.
I started by copying many drawings from J.C. Amberlyn's two books: Drawing Wildlife and The Artist's Guide to Drawing Animals: How to Draw Cats, Dogs, and Other Favorite Pets. From there, I started trying to do the same sort of thing except of of animal photos I found online. And then I practiced.

Since I'm being a good boy and all caught up now, here's a single drawing at a time!

Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
Good layout, as usual. The colors themselves are good too. I think it could use a bit more texture, though. Maybe drybrushing, particularly in the shadows, would work. I'd suggest a bit of scratching (it's a legitimate watercolour technique; I know; I read a book about it) for the highlights, too, except that it looks like you used non-watercolour paper, so it would probably not work right.

Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
They are cute.
Yay!
Thanks. Yeah, I would've had to have planned more texture. Looking back, the background should have been planned to have more detail.
Yes, this was in my sketchbook, as I wasn't originally planning to do washes and then went all what the heck I'll do it anyway.
Spoiler: Day 206
This is a headshot of a large parrot that lives on a few safe islands near New Zealand. They used to be numerous, but since predators were introduced to most of their habitat, there are only 136 of these birds left. Kakapos walk on the ground, as they do not have very powerful wings, and are about the size of a chicken.
...I want one.

Thanks! I hope you like parrots, because I just started a series of Critically Endangered parrot species drawings.
Spoiler: Day 207
This is a Glaucous Macaw, which is possibly extinct, unfortunately.

Wow, they do look cool. Also that's a great drawing, very expressive for a bird. Got chubby cheeks!

I messed the proportions up a little, so it looks more like a conure.
The Puerto Rican Amazon has under 100 member in the wild and only 300 or so in captivity.

You know, you're really good at that...scaling/feathering thing! Making their feathers look nice and scaled, I mean. It's layered nice.

Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
Yes, but then again the last one had more distinct feathers. They were puffed out and away from the body, giving them clear edges.
Spoiler: Day 210
There are only a very few Blue-Throated Macaws left, as they’ve been shot and trapped until relatively recently. The wild population is 300-400 strong.

Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
Any chance that with your new bird-drawing skills, you could draw something a little more fantastical, like a gryphon?

Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
I will, at least for the near future.
There is a decent chnace, once I'm done with this set.
Sorry I forgot to upload this last night.
Spoiler: Day 211
Under a thousand red-vented cockatoos exist in the wild, and they have both lost habitat from deforestation and been illegally trapped.
Not as happy with this one.

Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
The biggest flaw is that you didn't go with the flow of the image and gave him a big ole pot belly. He looks so poofy and fat but his chest suddenly gets flat so it meshes with things poorly.

Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
The ears, nose, and eyes all look good, and the form itself is mostly fine. 3/4 view is very forgiving, too, so that helps. That said, it looks like there are a few spots where the fur isn't quite right. In particular, the muzzle looks partially hidden by an odd flowing lock coming from the top of the snout.

Oh gee, what would make you think that?
Spoiler: Day 214
The yellow-crested cockatoo, also known as the lesser sulphur-crested cockatoo, has been trapped illegally and legally in vast number for a long time, and its population is now estimated to be under 7000 and falling.

Re: Cuthalion (tries to) make a daily drawing.
I just found this thread.
It's pretty good, certainly better than what I could do. I like the wrinkles on the eyes, and the detail on the crest.
Iirc, cockies have grey wings, which I can't see here. I might be thinking of the greater Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, though...
I also think of them with their crests up, so that looks a little off on first glance, but that's me again.
Also, they don't take the trapping lying down: they eat houses!
The trapping and mistreatment is a horrible thing though.Spoiler: Pixel avatar and Raincloud Durkoala were made by me. The others are the work of Cuthalion.

Thank you.
Spoiler: Here's a picture of this species.[IMG][/IMG]
Indeed.
Peopleeee.
Spoiler: Day 215
Don't ask me.
Spoiler: Day 216
Sorry for the poor quality, but both of the next two birds were reconstructed from illustrations; they're not very common.
The blue-fronted lorikeet only lives on one ~3,000 sq. mile island in Indonesia.
Spoiler: Day 217
Burg Eltz, a castle in Germany. It looks even prettier IRL, check out pictures!
Spoiler: Day 218
The New Caledonian Lorikeet is only listed as critically extinct because there’s a chance of flocks still existing in rather uncharted parts of the islands. Nevertheless, it's assumed extinct.
Spoiler: Day 219

Spoiler: Day 220
The Spix’s Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii), or little blue macaw, is a small macaw that lives in Brazil. Its population has been reduced to 93 specimens, who are all bred from seven individuals that lived in two nests, that were as far as they know the last wild macaws.
