Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
So because the other Metal Thread VIII disappeared I figure I might as well start one
Before we go on this wonderful quest I just want to say this
when I started posting in Metal Thread I was not a metalhead, I was 14, I had just moved to France, I listened to some heavier bands, I was lonely
3 and a half years later I have a successful metal blog, a record label (which just might pick up Amon which has ex-Deicide members) and owe a lot of significant firsts to metal (beer, kisses, etc) I've got some scars, some of which I think are permanent, but thats part of the joy for me
what brings you joy in metal?

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
There is nothing that helps me relax and get through periods of extreme anxiety like listening to metal. I know that sounds strange considering the music, but it really does work for me. If I'm having a bad day or can't concentrate, it really helps.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Does anybody here listens to Orden Ogan? I gotta say, the more I listen to them, the more I like them.
A few of my favourite songs by them:
The Things we Believe in (this band makes Fallout references and I love them)
Masks (warning, the video is a bit unsettling and graphic so it might be NSFW)
To New Shores of Sadness
About the question presented in the OP: I enjoy Metal because it makes my brain go like crazy, it makes me feel pumped, creative and it lifts my spirit when I'm down. And it comes in soo many subgenres I can always find something to fit my mood.Last edited by Kalmageddon; 2014-01-03 at 11:20 AM.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Did the other thread get reported or something? Or did it just disappear? I had things I wanted to say about posts people had made.
Anyway I owe Comrade a break down of his death metal + Melt-Banana list:
Carcass: This was pretty alright, but not quite my thing. I think I prefer their early days.
Defeated Sanity: Killer bass but the rest of it is also not exactly my bag.
Melt-Banana: I already love this album. :D
Exhumed: I like the way beefier chords break out into short melodies. The bridge was pretty awesome. I dig it! They apparently have a split coming out next week, too.
Suffocation: Pretty good. Didn't like it as much as the Exhumed but I already have the album so it'll get listened to eventually.
Extermination Dismemberment: This type of brutal death metal is not my field, haha. Nice band name though.
Katalepsy: Not my thing again. Sorry!
Wormed: Again, noticeably cool bass. I appreciate the musicianship but this kind of brutal tech death usually doesn't do much for me. I liked Deeds of Flesh's latest one for what it's worth.
Anyway my two favs were definitely the Exhumed and Suffocation. The Carcass was ok. Not big on the rest. If I understand correctly my kind of death metal is like black/death, old school Swedeath, catchy riffy stuff, atmospheric death, etc. and you're more of a brutal death, tech death, gore, etc. type of guy?
Related, my favorite death metal release of 2013 is no longer Bölzer's Aura or Verminous' The Unholy Communion! I've still been eating away at my 2013 list, despite it being 2014 already, and I listened to the latest EP by this band called House of Atreus, Into the Brazen Bull, and it is gooooooood. My favorite tracks are the opener "Bastards in the Hillside" and the epic closer "In the Shadow of Foreign Horses". It is quality stuff.
I also listened to Tribulation's The Formulas of Death and enjoyed it. Apparently their debut was well executed Swedeath throwback but then this opens with sitar (making them the fourth metal band besides Cult of Fire, Seidr and Grave Miasma to use sitar last year afaik) and goes on to be a bit of a mind ****. Really dark, interesting, somewhat progressive death metal album. It was someone I know's AOTY but I still need to give it more listens.Wonder Woman (DC Girls in Sweaters Style) Avatar by Astrella.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
I can agree as far as Carcass goes-- their Reek of Putrefaction-Symphonies of Sickness-Necroticism trifecta is my favourite from them-- but I still liked Surgical Steel. It was like Swansong done right.
That being said, while I can't deny a soft spot for the more brutal end of the death metal spectrum, I do also really like the thrashier side of the genre-- Morbid Saint, early Death, Deicide, Darkane, etc. But that's not to say I can't get down with some of the riffier, groovier old school ****, and I did rather enjoy the Beyond and the Verminous you posted. The only aspect of death metal I can really say I generally avoid is the strain of melodic death metal that seems to have an unfortunate tendency to neglect the 'death metal' half of the equation.
Have to say, I wasn't too big on the new Deeds of Flesh myself. Too heavy on the 'tech', not enough on the 'death'. Not execrable by any means, though. Still need to really listen to the new Tribulation, though.
Glad you at least enjoyed the Suffocation and the Exhumed!

What actually happened to the other thread? I hit the "new thread" link on the previous thread because I couldn't find it, and it gave me the "you don't have permission to access this page" message.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
I think there was some sort of glitch in the GitP server, the way I see it, is that its better that it happen when we only had one page up rather than thirty
I'm genuinely surprised at the lack of love for Surgical Steel here, I honestly think that may be their best record, it was my album of the year for 2013 for sure
And yes comrade
the suffocation and exhumed did kick tremendous amounts of ass
do you know about Rivers of Nihil?

I assume everybody in Europe in this thread are going to Hellfest like me and Grimbold?
You don't know why you should? Look at this line-up and try to tell me that again.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
I'd just like to clarify real quick
for me Surgical and Heartwork are roughly equal
Surgical is more varied and interesting, whereas for me, Heartwork is The Black Album of death metal
I don't actually like The Black Album, but what I mean is what it stands for, more polished, conventional song structures with a slightly more mainstream appeal

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Do you like Mongolian folk instruments? Throat singing? Black/folk metal? You need to listen to this album.
I never actually listened to Swansong due to its mixed reputation. Symphonies of Sickness is my preferred Carcass album, though I haven't listened to them in ages.
Glad you liked the Beyond and Verminous. I figured you'd at least like the former. I actually generally don't do death/thrash. Or thrash. Or black/thrash. For some reason, even if mixed with my favorite genres (death but especially black metal), thrash turns me off except in small doses. With the exception of certainy thrash/thrashy bands (Artillery's By Inheritance reigns supreme) or thrashy moments in otherwise non-thrashy songs. As far as melodeath... I wouldn't even call it death metal a lot of the time. More extreme NWOBHM/power metal. The genre has its moments though. Omnium Gatherum's first album, Kalmah, etc.
I can understand not liking the Deeds of Flesh. I only listened to it 2 or 3 times but it was enjoyable for a bit. I think Ulcerate's Vermis was my favorite techy album of the year, though I need to give the Gorguts more listens.
I don't remember if it was on my list, but Sacriphyx's debut is also pretty interesting and enjoyable as far as 2013 DM.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Hey, blame my friends. It was their music
And I didn't have any of mine with me. It would have been vetoed anyway :/
With a line-up like that, can you blame me?
Sigh. I need to move to the Northern Hemisphere.

Just found out today that one of my teammates is into metal as well! Apparently she's a huge Pantera fan. This made the day go a little quicker as we chatted about metal and the stuff we play for our kids.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
@Nameless- Nice!
@grimbold- Whatever I happen to be listening to. My youngest likes Rammstein, Eisbrecher, Samael...pretty much anything he can try out some headbanging to. The middle one is tougher to figure out, although he has loudly requested that I "turn that off it's annoying!" to a few things, Emigrate in particular My oldest is starting to like his own stuff. He's very into Imagine Dragons (we are going to see them for his birthday) and stuff that sounds like that. I'm trying to get him into Emigrate (he's ok with it) and he heard some Evanescence (which he liked). I will probably try to add in some Apocalyptica...
