Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Tengger Cavalry is awesome.
As for Carcass I really like the new album, although I gravitate towards the Symphonies of sickness style.
As for Black Metal I've been listening to Seeds of Iblis. So good.
Also really enjoying Thy Kingdom Scum from last year.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Also catching up on some of last year's stuff.
Got Eye of Solitude's Canto III last week and whoa. That's some heavy **** right there. Haven't felt such suffocating doomyness in a while.
Also checking out Leif Edling's new thing. And along with last year's Sabbath, it looks like I'll be riding the doom train for a while.
Still patiently waiting for my new Iced Earth.
Oh! Do you know Ruoska? Sort-of like a Finnish Rammstein. Check them out. Pretty good.
Cool. I just need to bribe my company to send me on a business trip for a week or so. :/Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Hahahah oh wow I just had the most random flashback.
Fifteen-odd years ago I owned an album by this German chick-slash-band called Doro. I lost it with all my other music about 7 years ago in a fire, and forgot all about it until just now when I read your post. Oh man that was a great album. Had a cover of Billy Idol's White Wedding on it. I remember the chick had a rocking voice. I'm going to track it down right now.
Strange how memory works, isn't it? I have no idea what triggered it. But thanks anyway
Edit: The album is Calling the Wild. Now to find a copy of the damn thing.Last edited by Feytalist; 2014-01-08 at 10:07 AM.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
@Nameless- No worries. I love Unheilig (wait...still German), Eisbrecher (hmm...having some trouble here). I like Samael (there we go!), Pain (LOVE their cover of Eleanor Rigby!!!), Kovenant, Dimmu Borgir, Dethklok.
My obsession though...yes, I'd say that's German metal.

I know not many folks here are too big into thrash, but is anybody else into Demolition Hammer? Their album Epidemic of Violence of one of the few albums I can listen to over and over again without getting tired of it. As far as I'm concerned, it's the pinnacle of thrash metal.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
So... Yossi Sassi has left Orphaned Land.
Well, that sucks.
(Additionally I also found out that Crimfall's vocalist Helena Haaparanta also left, but I'm guessing less people care about that one. Shame.)Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Do you listen to Windhand or Pilgrim Feytalist? THAT is some top notch doom right there (Also I had an epic conversation with Pilgrim about our dungeons and dragons playing habits)
Also, is anyone else in Europe going to see iced earth on this tour? I have my place to see them January 15th, the day before my birthday
And yes feytalist, get that business trip
this is your chance to break free of the shackles of south africa and become a truly european man!

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Wasn't aware of them, nope. Both pretty recent? I'll take a look, thanks.
Alas, no European trip for me :C ...I wonder of stowing away still works?
Edit: So I got Plagues of Babylon. Starts off crushingly heavy but kinda slow. Stu Block still bringing it, even better than Dystopia. Yeah, this will do nicely.
Another edit: Seems like Ulver and Sunn O))) is planning a split or joint album or something. Could be interesting.Last edited by Feytalist; 2014-01-10 at 03:17 AM.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
It's good, innit. The rest of the album slows down a bit, but it's still a good spin.
Bastard. Heh.
I liked Dystopia, but I thought it was a bit bland. I feel that Plagues of Babylon is a bit more technically interesting. Maybe not quite as catchy, but the riffing on a couple of tracks is pretty damn excellent.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
That's certainly fair enough, I think I'm a sucker for concept albums though so that helped to make Dystopia one of my favorites from Iced Earth...

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
So new Alcest is coming out tomorrow.
I've read some good and some really really bad reviews. Sort of wondering what it's gonna be like now. (Also I guess the metal thread isn't really the place to discuss Alcest any more, heheh.)Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
Got Shelter, been listening to it.
It's... very pretty. But it's also a bit bland. And not just because of the lack of harsh vocals or blast beats or whatever (although yeah I miss that too), but something that was in Les Voyages de l'Ame is a bit missing. Honestly I'd much rather listen to the new Deafheaven. Much more substance.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
I get what you mean, the blast beats and screams made it so much more special, yet this is still an excellent album. I was talking with nameless the other day and its more on par with Ecailles than Voyages as far as general excellence, so pants crappingly good but not SUPER pants crappingly good
also, on a rather metal note
enjoy this picture of me with my new kilt and drinking horn at my birthday party

Re: Metal Thread VIII-Playgroundklok
As Grimmy said, it's an excellent album, but far from Alcest's best.
I'm not upset that Neige has changed the musical style of Alcest, I actually admire artists that evolve or change and aren't afraid to try new things, and the same goes for this album; it's good to see that Neige is trying something a little different, it's something which is especially hard if you're tied into the Metal community. However, I do prefer their older material. It felt more unique and interesting, and for me, Les Voyages really set the bar for Alcest. It was such a perfect blend of different sounds and whenever I finish listening to the album, I always feel like I've gone through some weird and euphoric journey.
Don't get me wrong, this is a very good and enjoyable Post-Rock album, and definitely worth the listen, but nothing more. It's excellent, but not special.
What did really disappoint me though was the album cover. This is just a nit-pick really, but let's go on an Alcest album cover journey through time.
Spoiler
Ohh, this is pretty. Really nice photography, great colours, nice composition. It's simple, but also very unique and interesting. Really caught my attention when I first saw it.
As always, some Very nice illustrative work by Fursy Teyssier. Kinda surreal and perhaps a little symbolic, fits in with the theme and music style really well. Would make a great poster. (Yes, I have this on my wall)
HOLY BALLS THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.
It's... nice.
