    Events!
People from Guilder, the Heartwaste and Lyradis have noticed thick plumes of orange smoke from the tall mountain that marks their three-way border: sign of a new Blazing Avatar having been found! The old one died twenty-four years ago, one can only wonder what this one will be like.

A number of Sympol hunters and Priomhcine traders have fallen ill after eating from very large eggs. Most died after several days, boils on their bodies bursting open like volcanoes, releasing thick blue pus.

One of the most famous dwarven stone-carvers from Sulvan's Fury, Gerriock Earthmolder, has disappeared without a trace.

In Aloren and Kasumor, scholars have been found dead, murdered with what appear to be razor-sharp feathers.

Unknown ships have been spotted off the coast of Meraska, flying purple and white colours. When approached by other ships, they quickly sailed away, against the wind!

[The new Mormaer's Hall, Razdis, year 335]
The new hall was far wider and cleaner that the cave that came before; it was hung with the black and white mountain banner of Razdis, the green Lyradis flag, and countless minor clan standards. Mormaer Razkai was seated on a dais of masterfully shaped stone, freshly carved with figures of Razdissi and mushrooms. Razkai cleared his throat to speak.
"Greeting, esteemed heads of clans. Isn't this hall better than that dingy cave? I have called you to meeting again; matters require my attention, it seems. For example, the elven envoys from Eyrecradia have been residing in our foreigners quarter for 5 years. This is unacceptable. Dispatch them back to Eyrecradia with the news that we accept their offer of alliance. On the topic of alliances, our long-standing treaty with the esteemed nation of Lyradis is due to aid us. We shall trade our stone for their grain. Hopefully this extra food will increase our numbers. Also, we shall send an envoy to their grand ball; my son Tuthin will probably find it amusing, and it should keep him out of trouble for a few days. Furthermore, yet more nations clamour to join the Silver Pact. I accept them, so long as they have sizeable populations of Dwarves and half-Dwarves. That reminds me, it is the fifth anniversary of my sons marriages; Ambvard (ahem) Elder Ambvard to the delectable Elder Jaten, and Razkai to Grelod Earthsmite. Rejoicing shall be mandatory for at least one Shou. Give my regards via courier. Moving on from alliances, I need more troops. The present infantry are not flexible enough. That should be all."

    My actions:

    1. Accept Eyrecradia's alliance.
    2. Trade stone for grain with Lyradis, with the aim of growing the population.
    3. Send Tuthin (with escort) to the Lyradis Grand Ball.
    4. Accept those who want to join the Silver Pact.
    5. Raise a mixed force of 500 archers/light infantry (leather/light chain armour, bows, bucklers, short swords) and 500 cavalry (on the Razdissi horses; chain mail, shields, Domhain Abhaile-wood-shafted spears, long swords.), both mostly half-Dwarves.

    Family:
    Razkai (55)
    Razkai the younger (27)-Grelod Earthsmite
Elder Ambvard (23)-Elder Jaten (both in Tekorva)
    Tuthin (20)

The cart jostled and bumped as it moved over the rough dirt path that had been worn into the ground and a particularly nasty bump caused Dyamus to drop his papers he had been pouring over.

"What are you looking at father?" Olwyt asked as he helped his father collect the fallen papers from the bottom of the cart.

Dyamus glanced up at the young man sitting across from him. He had been so engaged in the nation these past years he had nearly missed his son growing into a young man. He was dark like his father, with green eyes from his mother, and a quick wit and tactical mind that with experience would one day rival Dyamus' own, or so he hoped.

For a moment he contemplated dismissing his son's question for the sake of returning to his thoughts but thought better of it, realizing his son needed instruction if he was to take over as Khan one day or, in a more immediate way, conduct himself in a presentable manner at the Grand Ball being put on in the kingdom Lyradis.

"Trade notes and troop reports," Dyamus said, shifting over next to his son and showing him the papers, "See," he said pointing to a rough map of the lands surrounding Woodwind, "This area here is home to our new trade partners, the land of Eyecardia, I've readied orders to send a trade caravan of timber to their lands in the next year or so which should begin a lucrative trade deal."

"Are we going to be in an alliance with them?" Olwyt asked.

"That remains to be seen, for now we simply trade, this conference Shinguard Earthguard has called may change things."

"I thought we were going to a ball?"

"We are, and a conference is to take place within there."

"But I didn't know that's why we were going."

"It's not the reason you're going," Dyamus said, "You will represent Woodwind at the ball while I attend the conference and see what it is our neighbors are proposing." And try to keep them off my back when I march north, Dyamus thought to himself.

"But how am I supposed to prepare to run the kingdom if I can't meet our allies?" Olwyt complained.

"They're not our allies yet," Dyamus corrected him, "Only Kasumor is and you've met them, Correla Ironthorn trained you to swing a sword. And do not be so quick to dismiss the ball, there may be things there you can learn."

Olwyt nodded but still looked unhappy.

"And I will tell you what happens within the conference," Dyamus relented, "If you promise to assist me with a strategy for the northern campaign." Dyamus added, laying out the map and troop positions as the cart continued to jostle westward and father and son bent over the papers that represented a nation.

    Spoiler: Actions!

1.) Send Dyamus (Married) and Olwyt Ignato (Bachelor) to Grand Conference/Grand Ball respectively (Accepted Eyecardia's trade proposal of timber for minerals; Join the Grand Coalition; Begin trade of Woodwind boar meat for Gunung Iron/Steel)

As Lord Bordeux sits within his study, penning a letter to Castellan Finir of Adessa, explaining why he was leaving for a far-off eastern nation, he looks up as his slightly eccentric Minister of Science, Simon Hardin, barges in unannounced.
Hastily bowing, he says, My Lord, I believe I have made a discovery of great importance. As you know, I recently visited the home of Castellan Finir. As I looked through his library, I noticed a loose floorboard. Upon further investigation, I found ancient books! written by the great astronomer Servius. I believe that the books were hidden there during the Revolution of Fire, a terrible time. You know, your ancestors, they at one time were very traditional, ordered many heretical book burnings-
Yes, yes, Simon, I'm well aware of the crimes of my ancestors. Now, please, the writings?
Yes, well, they detail some advanced astrological knowledge, something that has not been seen in Bordeux in a while. While they are in the Old language, I have some of my best scribes translating them as we speak.
Thank you, Simon. Is that all?
Yes, my lord. Thank you for your time.
As he leaves, another minister, Viscount Cartier, enters the room.
M'Lord. I have raised the requested amount of troops. However, I have some concerns on poaching and fighting within our home of mountains and forests. While our current force of heavy infantry and Calvary is commendable indeed, I believe we need men capable of maneuverability within the Freeman Forest. Thus, I request immediate training of a force of light skirmishers.
Permission granted. I was thinking about something similar myself. Now, before you leave, I have something else I must discuss with you...

Year 340, second cycle of the sun, 7th pyrith: Mystery, Day of Mystery, Shïnguards chambers

"Balls, armies, new areas...what lies in store after this." Marius thought to himself. The last couple of years went by like a storm, from the Grand Ball and Conference, to the repopulation of Kasumor's old fortresses. He thought of the search party he send out to the sea to seek new lands. "I hope they are oke over there." He murmured. "Who has to be oké father?" he heard above him. When we has looking up, Nyllana floated down with a grace she had only acquired recently. "I'm getting more predictable by the year, aren't I?" Marius asked with a smile on his face. Nyllana smiled and said: "Yes father, and what I also predict is that you need a massage from mother. You never look this tired before." "She is too damn sharp, time goes too fast, she is already 20." He thought with a grimas on his face. "I'll do that sweetheart. Talking about being tired....You don't look quite tired enough to fully read your lessons." He looked her in the eyes, while her face went pale. Marius laughed a hearthy, deep laugh. "I'll not tell your mother if you listen to my tiring problems. You might learn something about ruling a country." Nyllana's face brightened: "O yes, father, I would like that!" "Well then, it all started with this ball...."

Year 336, first cycle of the sun, 5th pyrith: Honesty, Day of the Beetle, Shïnguard's study

"Everything is ready, my lord. You can leave at a moments notice." A officer said to Marius.
Marius nodded, but his expression was grave with concern. What if the conference failed. No, he wouldn't let it fail. The other leader would see the threat and respond accordingly. He could not let himself falter.
"Thank you, lieutenant, we will leave in half an hour, you are dismissed."
The officer saluted and lets Marius' study. He walked to the window, taking a look outside to the rolling hills outside the city.
"Lyradis huh, is has been a long time. I wonder how Gerath is doing..."
He smiled to himself, memories of more then a decade ago rolling back into his mind. Memories of a less stressful time, without responsibility except his own. With only a good sword and drinking companions at his side. He shaked his head. This wasn't the time to be caught up in sentimental memories. He went out of his study, making sure everything was closed off.
"Nyllana, Ryella, we are leaving to Lyradis! Better come to the Verpad or I'll leave you behind!"

Year 337, second cycle of the sun, 2nd pyrith: Prowess, Day of the Mantid, Kasumi Plains

Scholar Cot Shortreach journal. Kasumi Plain research #37
"Today we found a weird creature in the inner regions of the Kasumi Plains. They look like normal sheep, but they look more like...plants. Also, their "wool" is not really like anything we have seen. I think I'll call it "Coton" after myself. The substance itself appears to be usable for creating clothing and lets aflame easily, as expected of a plant-based substance. My advice to the Shïnguard is to hunt a pack down, capture them and domesticate them in Kasumin. Some early experiments have already been done. As long as their are at least some Sleep-flowers in their patch, they thrive. Other information that might be handy I have summed up below:

    - Average lifespan: 5 years
    - Average amount of "young" per year: 6
    - The body is eddible and tastes akin to brown beans.
    - Diët: Normal grasses
    - Other prerequisites: Needs some Sleepflowers in their patch.

I hope this discovery can benefit Kasumor greatly. May your and my prowess never fail.
    Hail the Shïnguard!"

"My brothers in arms, you are the chosen ones, the first ones who will take the path of the Mantid Cavalary! Your prowess with be unmathed in all of the world. All threats, no matter where they come from, south or north, east or west or even from the sky or ground itself, we will crush them, together with our trusted mounts! This I swear upon my Kuroyume, my trusted blade!"
Marius unsheated his sabre, with its gleaming blade of Shintouite and saluted the 1000 soldiers before him.
"My brothers, this day is the day, the day Kasumor will take the first steps to its former glory, and beyond! Both in defense and offense, we will be unmatched once more. FOR KASUMOR!!"
A loud clamor rose from the soldiers:
"KASUMOR!, FOR THE GLORY OF THE SHÏNGUARD!, WE WILL LET THE CLOUDIZ RISE AGAIN!"
Marius smiled, knowing that he had an army unmatched by any other. His mantids would make sure of that.

Year 339, second cycle of the sun, 4th pyrith: Steadfast, Day of Mystery, Kasumor-Woodwind Border

Nyllana watched the expedition party go into Woodwind, on their way to the coast to make their way south. She could not join them, for it was way to dangerous for the heir to explore into unknown lands. However, her father promised her they would visit the new location if a suitable underwater area had been found. A nation underwater, made up of all Cloudiz-blooded. Her father was already setting up an invasion for when it seemed necessairy.
"A queen of the waves, plains and mountains." She whispered to herself, a small smile appearing on her lips.

"So Ignias, Laos, about the murders with the feathers. I want you to find the culprits at any costs. I'll give you the men you need, 1000 foot soldiers, each well trained. Just do not disappoint me. We need our scholars and we need them alive, not dead and looking like a dismembered chicken."
Marius looked the two old scholars in the eyes.
"Can you two do that? Lead this investigation?"
The two old friends looked at eachother and nodded.
"We know where the victims died, what they were doing when they died and at what times they respectively died, more or less." Laos explained. "We will smoke the culprits out and punish them for this grave transgression."
"Wait, them?" Marius asked with a look of surprise on his face.
"Yes, my Shïnguard, them. Two of our victims died at around the same time, but were tens of miles apart. Nobody could travel that fast, not even on a dragonfly." Ignias said.
"Alright then, but make sure you get all of the transgressors. I won't tollerate any heritics of knowledge in this country. Dismissed!"

1: 336: The King of Ashenia attends the Ball.

Having received so gracious an invitation, and desiring to see his second son again, the King of Ashenia rode forth from Adrakand accompanied by his queen and three eldest daughters, Idrisa, Salline and Mira, each of whom remained unmarried. This ball would likely prove the perfect opportunity to establish dynastic ties with foreign lands. (In 336, they're twenty-five, twenty-three and eighteen respectively for any eligible bachelors who are interested.)
Accompanying them was a guard of three hundred mounted warriors, their armour accented with silver, and a retinue of an equal number of servants. They brought with them many princely gifts, one for each known monarch, plus additional gifts should their geographers be mistaken. But for the King of Lyradis, they brought the finest gifts. Twenty white horses laden with exquisite silver jewellery, tableware and woven carpets from Severikand.
It would be weeks before they reached Lyradis, and everywhere they passed through, the common people were amazed at the sight of the King's splendour.

Year 25, Jaten Era, Spring [336]

Though it was spring, the weather was quite warm in this region. The large, heavy horses plod along contentedly as the party continues along the mountain path. Elder Jaten scratches her beard in deep thought, barely noticing one of the scouts returning to the party.

"Elder Jaten," the scout keeps his head bowed as he continues in Formal Speech, "Ahead is the city."
"Check the goods." Jaten dismisses the scout.

As the city comes into view, the party dismount for a final approach. It is considered bad manners in Tekorva to do otherwise.

A cool breeze playfully dances around the party as they lead their horses through Lyradis.

Fluff will be appended below as written:

#1: Increase military strength by convincing the rest of the independent ship captains to join up. [raise more sjhips]

#2: Increase military strength by establishing shipbuilding and navigation guild. [increase military capability of ships]

#3: Increase resource output of sea-olive oil through R&D. [start to improve good resource to great]

#4 & 5: During the year 339: Take a year long sea voyage stopping at the port cities of Meraska, Crima, and Celero. Attempt o make contacts within the guilds and port authorities to build goodwill. This will not be an attempt to make contact with the rulers of those countries, merely laying the foundations amongst their merchant and shipping classes.

Addendum- with Celero in upheaval, part of our tour will be to let the locals know how to call upon our navy to protect them, if they choose.

Jonas stood in the ceremonial circle. Behind him, a large bonfire burned, roasting a pair of wild boars. A dozen spirit poles formed the outer circle. He was surrounded by the senior crew of nearly every pirate vessel who regularly stopped at the Jewel Cities. Their expressions ran the gamut from calculatedly disinterested to supportive to downright hostile.

Free beer and free food kept their overt hositility to a minimum, however.

Ok, settle down, we all know why we are here”, he began.

“Free food! Free beer!” Shouts and laughter came from the crowd.

He took the laughter in stride. Dealing with the independent nature of sailors was something in which he was well versed. He waited for it to die down. “You have all seen what I have seen. The last five years have brought countless rumors. The continentals are organizing. The realms are strengthening ties with each other. This is not good news for us.

Why?” A voice from the crowd called. “More trade means more ships to raid!” The crowd cheered in assent.

More trade’ll pay for stronger navies to protect the merchantmen.” Jonas responded.

Yea, and make it harder to fly a fake flag and get their neighbors blamed for it.” Someone added, and the crowd grumbled.

Jonas nodded. “There will come a day, mark my words, come a day when we will have to choose- hang together or be hung one at a time. There is no running from this coming storm, you all can see that. We need to get our bow into the waves and now.”

Our bow, not yers.” A shrill voice cut the hubbub. This one he recognized.- Pauline, captain of The White Osprey, aka Pauly Feathers. He spotted her in the crowd. “At least she did not come dressed for war”, he mused privately. Pauline was known for her feathered headdress and cape she wore into battle. Pauly continued, “Yer ship is beached in Opal, has been fer years. Yer lackeys are out earnin a living fer ya.” Shouts and accusations ran through the crowd, quickly countered and challeneged.

He moved to defuse the situation, “You are spot on, Captain Pauline. I beached the Rising Tide when I settled down. But the other 5 ships under my command are still out there, plying their trade. You know them, Pauly,” he continued, his voice softening, “not a one would run from a fight, though they have run into their fare share.” That brought chuckles to the crowd as they settled down once again. “They bring rumors of trade alliances and grand conferences. You have heard the rumors too.”

He continued, “So where’s my skin in the game? Is that what you all want to know?” The crowd murmured its assent. “Ok, so here is what I offer. First, I wont stop your activities. Your ships are your soverign territory, as the code says. Second, I will establish and pay for a navigator’s guild. Any captain who donates their charts will get copies of everyone’s charts, even mine.” Shock ran through the assembly- Jonas’ charts were legendary for their accuracy and veracity. “Third, any who sign on will get a 5% reduction in cost on in-island transport.”

    “15” Pauline countered

7, and I’ll buy you a new hat.” Jonas replied to chuckling from the group.

8 and a half, and you join me in me cabin for the night.” She offered, wiggling her attractive bits about.

10, and you never offer that again!” Jonas bellowed over the catcalls of the crowd.

Sold!” The crowd noise became downright boisterous for a time.

Sober voices eventually cut through the din, “So what do you ask of us?”

Three things I give, so three things I ask.” Jonas proposed. “First, we stand together in trade and in defense of our lands. You fly the flag of the Jeweled Cities when on official business. If not, then you fly your own colors. Second, If I call, your ship will be there. We will stand together and defend our islands or interests are attacked.” The crown hooted the assent to standing together, with many a call of Cousin’s united. He continued, “Finally, I will go out into the continent and attempt to secure proper honest trade, and will parcel out the contracts to the best suited to them.

A Meraskan man had managed to climb up a spirit pole, to get above the crowd. As Jonas finished, he demanded attention. Jonas recognized him as a captain referred to as The Blue Monkey; for he was short even for a Meraskan, had brilliant blue hair, and knew his way around rigging like few others in the world. “A honey trap you set, Jonas. You make beggar’s of us, coming to your table’s bounty. I demand fair winds!”

The man was popular, and the chant of “fair winds” broke out in the crows. Privately, Jonas had hoped to retain control of the contracts and their incentives. But one last concession, and he might come up with the big pearl after all.

Done, Captain! I will post each contract 30 days before shove off, and each captain can weigh anchor upon it.” Cheers broke out in the crowd.

Enough talk! Lets eat” Someone in the crowd demanded. “And drink” came other voices. The meeting quickly devolved into the party Jonas promised. It lasted the better part of three full days, spilling out into from the small ceremonial island and into the city of Pearl proper. The money Jonas spent on food and drink was recouped quickly as the captains let their crews loose upon the taverns, inns, gambling halls, and brothels of the city; many of which he owned.

The sun was setting over the western ocean, spilling its golden rays over the comfortable grass cabin on the beach. Jonas reclined in a hammock, curled up with Ginger. Their twin girls sat upon the floor, playing a counting game with their ‘aunt’ Mary Ann. The snort of an approaching horse and the scattering of ground parrot was all that broke the peace of the evening.

Roy Hinckley had arrived, making his way down from Opal to Mary Ann’s cottage on the ocean. His mood was at odds with the tranquil scene.
What was so important you made me come all the way down here?” He asked as he dismounted, then ascended the porch.

Uncle Roy!” The twins shouted, rushing over to him. They both began yammering at him, attempting to fill him in on every detail of their lives simulataneously and at great volume. Prying himself loose, he handed the twins two round opals the size of walnuts. The girls ran off to hold them in the sun and count rainbows.

That’s a dirty trick, Jonas, siccing those two on me.” Roy smiled ruefully, much of his anger gone.

Ginger raised her head, “Is it our fault our girls know how to twist their favorite uncles around their little finger?” She said in a pouty voice.

Of course it is, dear.” Jonas answered. “You have taught them well.” He disentangled himself from his woman and moved to a small chair. Roy took a seat as well.

I want to triple the islands production of kelp-oil” Jonas began without preamble.

    “Jonas, I…. triple?”

Yea, triple. We can survive here, even have a good life. But the continentals have resources we don’t. We can sell them on it, I know we can.” He leaned in, his earnestness showing. “It burns cleaner and with less smell than fish oil. Mix it with the husk fiber, and it waterproof’s a ships hull like nothing else. It’s a gift from the sea gods.”

Roy ignored the religious note, having little time for such things. “Even if you could sell it, I don’t think we can produce enough…” He countered uncertainly.

Professor,” Jonas said, using his nickname for the man, “You know more about how things work than any man I’ve ever met. Your brewery pumps out more beer than the next half dozen combined. You’ve got a mind for wheels and gears the likes of which I’ve never seen. If anyone can figure out how to do it, you can.”

The two talked long into the evening, Roy remaining unconvinced and unwilling to take on such a task. The two women and the children retired to their beds as darkness overtook the island. Eventually, Jonas rejoined Ginger, and they spoke quietly for a time. Ginger waited for Jonas to fall asleep, then slipped away for a time.

In the morning, Roy left early, with assurances he would, indeed, tackle the challenge. Ginger took the girls swimming, leaving Jonas and Mary Ann alone to eat breakfast. He watched her leave.

“You know she spent the night with Roy, don’t you?” Mary Ann asked.

“OF course she did.” He answered calmly.

Mary Ann shook her head, “I don’t know how you two manage to stay together at all. I have geese who show more commitment.”

“ I love her, and she loves me. We are one mind, pushing our vision for the cities, and for our children. Her abilities are just more… tactile than mine. Come now, cousin, have we not evolved beyond jealousy?”

Mary Ann did not reply. She simply sat, pondering his words.

It felt good to be captaining a ship again. It had taken a few years to get her built, but the “Coral Skipper” was the finest ship he had ever seen. Getting the Captains involved had been a stroke of brilliance. Their competitive streak and desire to show off reaped huge rewards in ship rigging and hull design. She was an armored merchantman, part cargo ship, part man of war, fast and agile under sail.

Now, it was time to take her on a grand tour, show her off to the world at large. He glanced around. Off to port sailed The Crimson Widow, still under the command of Captain Pauline. To the starboard cruised The Gambler, Blue Monkey still captaining. The three ship flotilla flew the flag of the Jeweled Cities. The holds were loaded with the treasures of the islands- barrels of kelp olive oil, fruits of many kinds, chests of jewels, and cages of ground parrot. At each stop along their tour, they planned to be more than generous, allowing the bounty of the Cities to be known. They had no plans to talk directly to the rulers of those lands. That would come in time. The first step was making positive contacts in the harbor towns’ merchants.

Captain Jonas Grumby looked down to the main deck. There, amongst the hustle and bustle of a professional sailing crew, he saw his family. Ginger and the two girls lounged on deck, watching the crew. Amber and Evelyn were ten now, and as inquisitive as any two could be. Evelyn was practicing her knots, ever the diligent student. Amber was more gregarious, and more than one sailor found themselves defending against a belaying pin tuned child’s sword.

Their first stops will be in Meraska. The Blue Monkey will take the lead, with Pauly's ship laying offshore some distance.

    [The Royal City of Cree]

"High Chieftain, there is a letter for you here. I would not be so uncouth as to read your personal correspondence, of course, but the subject line says something about a Grand Ball in Lyradis?"

Umajin scoffed atop his horse, spitting upon the dirt-carved street below as he passed through the city's gates.

"Tarjin, I don't care. King Toranth and Lord Bordeux are already representing the Union, and no doubt doing a fine job of it. Also, Lyradis is on the other side of the continent, and so I have the luxury of ignoring it. The same is not true of any other matter on my mind."

The herald rode alongside the High Chieftain upon his own steed, surveying the city. It had come far in the last few years, after the bandits were dispersed and the survivors either recruited into the army or forced to surrender. Trade had flourished and Crima's alliances had proven beneficial. Food was plentiful, for Bordeux Cedarwood had a fine incense that had nearly driven out all of the traditional crop-destroying insects and trade with Ashenia had helped even the poor folk attain some dietary variance. Perhaps most importantly of all, at least to the High Chieftain, trade with Sulvan's Folk brought in wonderfully-crafted armours and weaponry, forged from fine iron and the yet finer, mysterious Mithril.

The City itself was now one of the finest in the world: Great buildings crafted from Crima's own mountain stone reached toward the skies, with beams of Bordeux timber still lying underneath. Men and women clad themselves in furs and hides, for they had no need for rags. All but the poorest of the poor could even afford a horse or two to travel quickly and take goods to market.

"Still, though, I think we've done some good. I just can't afford to let my grip slacken now, while we build. Send a letter of apology to Lyradis, but I can't attend because I don't trust that the bandits won't return if I do."

As the two passed through the market on the way to the keep, the herald frowned a little bit. He didn't really think it was a good idea to ignore outside diplomacy like this, but couldn't really offer a decent counterpoint.

"I...suppose so. So what are these other matters that need attending to?", asked Tarjin, changing the subject. High Chieftain Umajin, in response, pulled off the mithril barbute he wore, and simply said "I'm going to recruit a new army."

Tarjin nearly choked on his tongue as he heard that "What?!", he shouted, though after a short pause he amended this to a quieter and somewhat more respectful "What? Why?"

Umajin chuckled and continued. "We have a thousand men and women on horse, a fine force of course. They're shielded by boiled hide and the strongest metal this side of adamant, but lighter to boot! They're wielding fine lances and arrows crafted from Bordeux timber and Sulvan's iron. They are mounted atop the best Crimar and Ashenite horses that we could muster, and given the finest training that Crima could offer.

But as great as they are, they are only a thousand men. What would we do if two thousand were to attack? Five thousand? Ten thousand? No, we need a strong base of conscripts to work with. They do not need to be mobilized at all times, but we need a base of soldiers we can call on at a moment's notice."

Tarjin couldn't deny the logic, paranoid as it was, but where would it end?

"Chieftain, with all due respect, please tell me that you aren't planning on conquering our neighbors? We don't have the resources for full-scale war and we shouldn't be aggressors if we don't have to."

Umajin smirked, and went on to say "Of course not. This is a defensive measure, and only a small part of my plans. I'll show the world Crima's strength if necessary, and if it works like I hope we won't even need to use it much. Besides, I want people to feel safe while we work on the educational system."

That also got Tarjin's attention. "Educational system?", he said. "We already have schools for the merchants and nobles. Unless you're saying you want to teach the peasants how to read and write?" He was making a smart comment, so it came as something of a surprise when the High Chieftain responded with a smile and the word "Exactly."

The Herald stopped his horse in its tracks, causing it to nicker in surprise at the sudden stoppage. "You're not serious. You...can't be. Building enough schools in the villages to serve everyone would...that's dozens, if not hundreds of new schools and new instructors to hire! How?! What would we even gain? You don't need to read and write to farm! Nor to hunt or fight!"

Umajin silently continued his slow trot up toward the Fortress' gates, leaving Tarjin spurring his horse forward to keep up. "Wait, please! I just want to know what you're trying to accomplish!"

The High Chieftain stopped his horse in the Court stable and dismounted from her before going on to unsaddle the beast and close her pen.

"There are a bevy of reasons that I'll go over later, but the fact of the matter is that an educated people is more effective at virtually everything than one that isn't. Besides, you're thinking in the short term. We'll start near Cree and radiate toward the borders over the years. It'll take a long time to finish all of them, and the first ones will encourage scholars to grow, who will help supply the further schools with instructors. A smarter populace will haggle better with the merchants, work their crops on better schedules, and generally be far more productive. We'll make back the money we spend tenfold."

The Herald was not precisely sold on the idea, but opposing Umajin directly would be...poor for his future employment.

"...Alright. I trust you. Are you still planning on holding a feast to celebrate your victory over the Elkan Band?"

The High Chieftain Umajin simply smiled as he held the helmet at his side and one of the servants helped him take off his mail. "Of course, Tarjin. Of course."

The Gardens of The Temple of Flames, Calorum, 337

That night High priest Combulei was walking in the majestic gardens surrounding the temple. After doing his normal round of walking, he found himself sitting on his knees in the middle of the garden right next to some sunflowers. He felt strange, could no longer think strait and could swear that he saw something in the night sky. The stars seemed to shine slightly more bright and the dark seemed to pull him in. as he sat there he raised his hands and tried to touch the stars. His hands made strange patterns in the dark sky as if one were to stir a bowl of creamy soup. he lowered his hands again and saw the lines connecting each star to the others. they were not the lines of the known constellations. These lines formed one figure, it was a round tube that seemed to be very deep... and at the end... at the end there was truth. So much truth in fact that Combulei could not understand it all. But he understood one thing, this was a sign from the Lord. The Lord had chosen him to carry forth his believes, but Combulei would only be able to do so if he himself had seen at least part of the truth.

The following day he told his priests of his encounter with the Lord. The priest all fell to their knees chanting: Oh holy and flame ascendant. We pledge ourselves at your feet. In your path we will follow. Your advise we will take.

Later that day all citizens of Calorum were summoned to the temples were the priests told them of the favor that the Lord had bestowed upon them. A great happiness took grasp of their hearts and for two days a festival was held!

Year 27, Jaten Era, Autumn [338]

"What is this?" Jaten raises an eyebrow.
The Hunter looks a little surprised. Jaten had moved so quietly and he almost didn't even recognize her. She had matured well and now had the beginnings of a glorious beard.
"Elder Jaten. This is my humble attempt to make our berries grow more reliably." the Hunter bows as low as possible whilst explaining in Formal Speech. Jaten hides just how pleased she is at the progress made. This harvest was indeed quite a bit bigger than last years'.

Year 28, Jaten Era, Summer [339]

The hammers ring out as usual despite the intense heat of the day (at least by Tekorvite standards). Rumour has it that Tekorvite metalwork is the best in the land, but of course each country would claim their own is the best. Ambvard always tried to hide a laugh at this. The metalwork of Razdis was second to none! At least... He thought so. Though these Tekorvites were investigating this and that almost non-stop.

An excited shout in Casual Speech disrupts his thoughts as a Tekorvite smith rushes up to him with a steel sword. As if steel wasn't hard enough to make reliably, the Tekorvites were wasting it on experiments.

"What is it?" Ambvard asks in Polite Speech. The smith seems shocked as he realizes exactly who he was speaking to, but not for long. Bowing low in apology he starts rabbiting on about 'just the right heat' and 'if you do this' and 'hammer it in this manner' and even 'using this grindstone'. A little bored, Ambvard gently takes the sword. Evidently it was made for the almost 8 foot Tekorvites, but even by simply inspecting it Ambvard found the sword to be of extraordinarily high craftsmanship. It was incredibly sharp, light, but a little strange. Unlike the broader swords he had seen, this sword was long and slightly curved with only a single edge.

But... Considering the Tekorvite fighting style, is this not the perfect sword? Ambvard was deeply impressed and hoped that Razdissi metalwork was still better.

Year 29, Jaten Era, Spring [340]

Havus sighs lightly as he perches atop the cliff on the 'Korvan side of the border between it and Sympolemeu. The sight is quite inspiring, but alas he is no painter and could not convey it properly in words to the others in Metako. Instead, he writes important words upon the scarce resource currently known as parchment. Were one to look over his shoulder, only the title would be clearly visible.
    Metallurgy

His billowing red robes flow around him as a sudden wind threatens to steal his life's work away from him. Thankful that it did not, Havus quickly retreats for night is surely approaching.

    Spoiler: Action
    Show
340 - Tekorva begins writing tomes of Metallurgy [Curiousity]

Note - Tagging actions with intent is an awesome idea! I am stealing it and wish I had been intelligent enough to have thought of it myself.

((EDIT - The word I chose for 'ice wine' was incredibly lame. Also, even I could not pronounce it elegantly out loud. It also makes more sense to the story if it is in High Speech rather than Common.))

Calafiort, The Domhan Abhaile, Year 336

Hall of Visitors, Naomh Fionn's home

    "A ball, you say?"

Fionn paced back and forth, considering the messenger's words. Of course, Fionn knew of Lyradis in the south. Razdis lay under the nation, and the dwarves were good trade partners by now. But this...this was the first formal contact Lyradis had made with his nation. To invite him to a ball? A party? They would almost certainly be late at this point. The messenger had made the mistake of coming by land, of all things, and had needed to pass through the Samhnas Swamps to reach Calafiort. But it would be a dishonor to not make the effort, and Lyradis was a neighbor.

"Oh, go, why don't you." The aging Keelin popped her head from behind the tapestry where she had been eavesdropping. A wicked grin on her lips. "It will be fun! Mingle, meet with your fellow rulers. Get a sense of the world."

"Keelin, I don't have time for fun. My people need me here. There's sickness to the north, and there are rumors of a new Blazing Avatar, which is sure to send ripples through the spirits, even up here-"

"Fionn Sheenan. You are twenty and five years. You have already done much for your people. You have earned the right to step outside our borders. The other chieftains and I can handle those things. Your father taught me a thing or two about the spirits before he passed, and Peadar is already investigating the sickness. We will survive without our exalted Naomh for a few months." Keelin straightened out Fionn's robes, shaking her head. "Besides, it is high time you found yourself a wife. Who knows? Maybe some young foreign lass will catch your eye."

Fionn blushed a little at this. "Chieftain Aoire, please. We have a guest. Show some decorum."

"Oh, you know better than that, young sprout. I'm just a strange old woman. I'm sure our messenger friend will forgive my lack of propriety. And if you've no interest in foreign women, perhaps you should bring Lady Fiain."

    "Keelin!"

Frostpeak Mountains, the Domhan Abhaile, Year 337

Peadar clambered over the rocky wall, the wind blistering across his face. The strange plague had been spreading amongst Priomhcine traders who had journeyed north to Sympolemou. After interrogating several of the ratmen who had come south, the only link Peadar could see between all the cases was the consumption of some strange, massive eggs. The Sympol had given him a map to where a clutch of the things could be found. Hopefully, they had not lead him on a wild goat chase. If something could not be found to stop the spread, Peadar was seriously considering closing trade with the northern neighbors until the next Council, which could prove disastrous...

Calafiort, the Domhan Abhaile, Year 338

    Docks

Diarmuid ran his hand over the bow of the mighty vessel. It had taken years of studying Qarimian technique, drawing endless sketches of their ships, the masts, the planking and riveting and a thousand other tiny details. Years of models and tests and failed attempts. But, finally, he felt he had done it. This was the ship. The ship that would carry the Togalai - no, the Priomhcine - out onto the open sea. Out of sight of the coast, into the shinning, setting sun, into the domain of Mother Ocean. Now all that was left was to give it a name.

"Ghloir Maidin. A fitting name for the rising sun of our people."

Toirneach Foothills, the Domhan Abhaile, Year 340

A lone, hooded man gazed up from the path at his feet. Above him, the eternal storm of Lord Sky circled Father Mountain. Always holding back the winds of winter, always maintaining his lonely vigil. Well, now Father Mountain, for the first time in a long time, would receive a visitor. The man could only pray he had made the right choice.

    And he climbed.

    Actions 336-340

Aitah the first Lava King of Gunung

year 336 of the Kasumori Calendar:
King Aitah looked upon the entrance to Itzli with pride and joy as he finally returned from the grand ball and the exhausting, but fruitful grand conference. Pacts had been made and it was time for Gunung to make good on it’s part in these pacts. Among the many minor projects needed for Gunung’s new place in the newly formed Grand Coalition would be further expansion of its roads to accommodate the trade that would soon start, the announcements to the general populous and the construction of an Inspad on the top of Acachto directly above the city Itzli. And sending messages througouth the kingdom about the alliance and the opening of the borders to all coalition troops. Most taxing however was the expedition sent to a small Island of the Celeri coast to found the at first small shared Grand Coalition port. The small port was named Acaltica. Lastly several new malls for pouring adamantium where also produced (for trade).
(See the official Grand Coalition document for details)

End of the year 336 of the Kasumori Calendar:
Finalizing the expansions to Gunung’s farmland started several years ago, Aitah oversees the rapid and extensive expansion of Gunung’s farms allowing the trade of Farm produce from these farms, a trade which is immediately started with carts laden with food travelling across the obsidian roads to several outside destinations. In addition Aitah makes sure that all the foreign food coming in through trade as well as excess food from Gunungs farms is spread among the population in such a way as to promote growth

year 337 of the Kasumori Calendar:
With the formation of the grand coalition the project of using the army to expand Gunung’s border fortresses and expanding the “obsidian road” changes slightly. With a new focus on connecting Gunung’s roads to Pyronia, kasumor and Celero. In addition guards at the Cellero border are given strict orders to redirect any fire priests as per the agreements.

Year 338 of the Kasumori Calendar:
Following the kasumori example and utilizing the mantids gained from their 5 year trade deal Gunung trains 900 riders on huge Matids and 100 riders on Huge Dragonflies. All are equipped with steel tipped lances and a new type of tower shield using several alternating layers of woodwind wood with an outer coating of Guilder bronze.

Year 339 of the Kasumori Calendar:
The governmental Gunung explorative group is formed, consisting of a mix of mountaineers, priests and mapmakers. As well as a scout force consisting of 50 giant dragonfly riders. This groups first task is to head north exploring the region to the north of the white plume mountains.

    Going for +2 curiosity

    Spoiler: Actions

2: 337: Sometimes you need help looking at the stars...

Their fledgling institution was but two years of age, and already it had gathered hundreds of students and tens of the best minds in Ashenia. While the teachings of law, philosophy and history proceeded at a leisurely pace, that of mathematics and particularly astronomy boomed under the guidance of the University's leadership. However, there was only so much they could glean from the heavens with only the aid of their current instruments.
Thus, they devised a plan to build new instruments. Great stone ones, more accurate than any other built. A great sundial to mark time more accurately than any other, observation rooms to sight stars, instruments aligned to the main constellations, each one a precise feat of geometry.
The initial work complete, they presented their proposal to the King, citing an improved accuracy in the calendar and more accurate predictions of eclipses. After some thought he agreed, the last eclipse had caused a certain degree of panic after all.

3: 338: Exploration, possibly for riches and glory.

Despite misgivings from his parents and his wife, Prince Hazael was determined to lead an expedition to the uncharted lands to the South, even if he had to pay for it out of his own pocket. Knowing what a disaster a poorly funded expedition would result in, the King assented and made funds available.
As such, an expedition of one hundred men and horses with supplies to last a full year was amassed in the Esedan city of Desana. The Crown Prince rode up before them to make his address.
"Men of Ashenia and Eseda! The world beyond our lands is incomparably vast and filled with wonders to equal Ashenia's own. And we know this for our beloved King has himself travelled to distant lands to the East and beheld before him realms as gifted and blessed as our own and spoken and dwelt with kings and queens his equal in wisdom and majesty.
"But what of the West? And the South? Of what lies beyond this wilderness, we are sadly ignorant. The same complacency that prevented our ancestors from claiming the plains of Crima in centuries past has led us to ignore the forested wilds to the South of Eseda.
"But I say no more! We will forge a new path into the unknown! And together, we will bring the glory of Ashenia to the corners of the world!"

4: 339: Building up the army.

((I can't think of a good way to write this... So I'll just come straight out and say it. I'm doubling the size of my army by raising another thousand light cavalry.))

5: 340: They may not be the prettiest, but at least they're handy.

As the University of Severikand grew, scholarship spread throughout Ashenia leading to a greater demand for books. Where once only a few nobles and private citizens had felt the need to keep more than a few books of law and literature, now there were many who were educated. Each one desired copies of new works of the works being published by the University scholars, and many of those not at the University published their own works as well which led to an even greater desire for books.
The old ways of calligraphy and illumination were too slow to keep up. A faster method was needed, and as such, vast copy-houses were set up near Severikand where pages were written out in a simple neat hand, gathered together and bound in leather. Books were still produced in the old manner, but the plainer books allowed many more copies of each text to produced, and soon there was a surplus.

    Spoiler

2: Construction of a great observatory at Severikand, similar to the Jantar Mantars of India. If this is a great project, let me know.

3: An expedition headed by Crown Prince Hazael heads South into the unknown.

4: Raise one thousand troops, light cavalry armed with light lances, swords and javelins.

5: Curiosity five action: New Resource: Books.
It's all part of my secret, totally-not-evil plan.

The University of Severikand sounds like a Project, yes. Possibly a Great Project. Estimation: 3-4 rounds total to construct.

    Events!
In Kasumor, near the border with Celero, newly built shrines to Ashmar have been found burnt down.

A Priomhcine sage has noticed that for one day, it seemed as if Lord Sky's winter storm was briefly calmed.

In Crima, a peculiar horse was born. Though unlikely to have been from its ancestor's crossbreeding with Ashenian stock, it possesses vestigial wings.

In Keldagrim, several tunnels now bear the curious inscription "GERR-->".

On the border of Gunung and Pryonia, a volcano has erupted with blue lava. It took much longer to cool.

During the New Year's celebrations of 342, the Northern Lights were seen in Sulvan's Fury and Bordeux.

[The Mormaer's Hall, Razdis, year 340]

A new addition had been made to the Mormaer's Hall-a lower seat had been placed to the side of Razkai's Throne. The Mormaer, still seeming virtually unchanged by his age, sat in his accustomed throne whilst Razkai the Younger sat beside him. The Mormaer cleared his throat to speak:
"Lords of Clans, hear my words. I have placed this seat next to mine own, and called you all to this chamber, for I have momentous news. My eldest son, whom you all know, has children. Not only that, but twins. The two are both boys, and I name them now Vali and Ali. One or both of them will rule over Razdis when I am gone; we shall hold a true celebration after this meeting. Due to events at the ball held five years ago, the world is a stranger place than we thought it was. The Blazing Avatar lives, and according to my son Tuthin, who cannot be with us at this moment; I shall explain later, is possessed of strange powers over fire and heat. Fire is all well and good to forge our tools, but to worship such a destructive force is pure folly; it is akin to worshipping Finbael's Deep."
A number of the Clan leaders here clutched talismans of iron or stone in fear. Finbael's Deep was not spoken of lightly.
"Calm yourselves, Clan leaders. Moving on, a far more positive consequence of the ball is the strengthening of the alliance between Lyradis and ourselves. We are to provide our craft and industry to strengthen their fortifications. Such is necessary in these harsh times. Now, on to Tuthin. He is assisting in command of the training of 2000 new Razdissi soldiers; furthermore, he will command our smiths to investigate this new phenomenon of steel"."
"Such is the will of Razdis. Now, on with the celebrations for the births of Vali and Ali…"
The Clan leaders merrily filed out of the chamber; a banquet had been set.
Razkai the Elder stayed behind for a moment. Apparently speaking to a shadow, he muttered:
"That should distract them. Now, on to our real business…"
