"We could break the lock on the pasteurization door, and see if there's something in there to help but we need to deal with the rats in there before they eat too much of the cheese. We need something to bring back for Uncle Alfred's dinner."

*gulp* "Yeah... we don't want him substituting anything fow the cheese." Dwobwick looks down at himself as he says that. "Wobby, get anothew colow spway weady. Dindin, Ilven... come with me!"

Dwobwick moves to the door to the north and listens for squeaking. Presuming it's silent - to him at least - he opens it and begins searching for anything that may be of use moving a 150 lbs of cheese or dealing with rats.

The room to the north is silent. It looks destroyed by both negligence and rats. The floor is literally covered in broken shelving and cheese wrappers about waist deep on a gnome (just under the knee for everyone medium). It looks like the rats turned this room into a nest, but you don't see or hear any now.

The room itself is 25 by 25ft, and ringing the room are the tall shelves from the first room. These are empty though, except for the odd cheese cloth.

"These rats party pretty hard," Drindrin remarks, looking out at the rubble, which comes up even higher on him than it does on Dwobwick. "In another life we could have been bros." He gives a sanctimonious nod.

"So, do you guys want to root around in garbage and rat droppings, or should we try the other door? It looks like we could probably force it open, but we might get into trouble with the school."

"The school will be in even mowe twouble if we wepowt this wat infestation to the pwopew authowities." He seems to have become comfortable with his inability to say Rs around you guys... or maybe the sentence just necessitated it.

"Ilven, have one of the little invisible guys dig thwough all that." He indicates the garbage in the north room. "I mean, you can help if you want but... gwoss."

"Dindin, on thwee let's tackle that doow like it's a... something you tackle." A brief pause as he attempts to cover his embarrassment by beginning the counting. "One, two, thwee!"

Drindrin's brain works furiously to come up with a good response to "something you tackle," but to no avail. Just when he's about to resign himself to a "your mom" joke, Dwobwick begins counting and then rushing towards the door to the pasteurization room. Drindrin makes a half-hearted attempt to catch up, but decides against it halfway through and merely looks on.

(OOC: It looks like you're going to make the check, so this seems like a good chance for some character development)

The tiny gnome hits the door with a solid crack of wood breaking under sudden force. The latch gives way and the gnome stumbles into the room.

It is a smallish room, 15x15 with 10ft of head room. It is cuttered with cheese making gear and is dominated by a large L shaped tub (empty) with cheese making equipment and a furnace for pasteurization. There is a table just to the east of the door with a note

“Devan, I haven’t seen you for a while, so I assume you have been busy. I left you a kit for the furnace room in case you need it. There is a first aid kit and a little something to help you start the furnace, because I know how bad you are with a flint and steel. Make sure to use the proper stirring rod, as the steel ones flavor the cheese with a bad taste. I don’t even know why Smee favors it. He makes a horrid second cook – Pippin”

On the table there are two potions of cure light wounds labeled in a small neat handwriting and a scroll of burning hands (also labeled in a helpful manner by said small neat handwriting, same as the note)

In the corner of the room there are two metal sticks about 5 foot long. They appear to be a wooden staves covered in silver plating and steel plating respectively. The steel staff feels unbalanced and unwieldy, but the silver one feels light and extraordinarily well balanced (alchemical silver masterwork quarterstaff (medium size)).

In the north room.

The unseen servant starts shifting around trash and sorting though the rats nest. There is suddenly a large crash and the nest falls into a sink hole. It would have been a nasty fall onto sharp broken wood shelves if it wasn't started by an intangible unseen servant! The trash is pulled into the hole by the collapse, leaving a clear path to the door to the east. You think it must be the door you never searched in the first room.

Ilven's Unseen Servant continues to poke around in the north room as it was instructed, searching for anything that isn't cheese or broken wood planks.

Dwobwick snatches the scroll off the table and hands it to Ilven, leaving the potions there until they're needed. "You get to help kill wats, Ilven! Yay!"

The silver stick in the corner is much too large for Dwobwick so he pretty much ignores it. He does take a look around the room for rats, rat holes, half-eaten cheese, and anything else that may indicate an infestation.

Assuming nothing of import is found, he moves back to the central room and waits for Robert to finish preparing his Color Spray spell (apx. 15 minutes).

Drindrin casually walks into the room after Dwobwick. He reads the note and remarks, "I hope Smee's gotten better since this was written. Otherwise we're in for some unpleasant dorm food. Well, there's always Prestidigitation to make things taste better. Or alcohol."

He grabs the silver stick and walks back to the rest of the party. "If either of you big guys want this, it's all yours. If not, we can probably sell it."

When Robert finishes prepping his Color Spray, Drindrin turns toward the group and says "Alright, let's get this over with. Don't want to keep Uncle Alfred waiting..."

The plan goes off without a hitch. The cheese is lifted, revealing a hole in the floor large enough for a person to crawl through. The swarm of fat, stinky rats begin to rush to freedom, only to be met with a face full of glitter, causing them jerk and stop in place.

The burning hands scroll ignites the oil, but the spell itself isn't very strong (1 damage). The oil burns for 2 rounds, dealing 6 damage.

The fire goes out after those two rounds, and the swarm is still squeeking in rage, now smelling of burnt hair and melted cheese crumbs. They are still stunned and blind, and will be for 3 more rounds.

"How they not dead?!?" Dwobwick shouts as the rats twitch and squeal in pain and surprise. He sees Drindrin leaping into action and grabs his lantern, holds it into the flames to light it, and proceeds to swing at the remaining rats.

Under the onslaught of fire and silver coated staff, the overfilled rats die swiftly! You are left alive and unharmed in the room, where the cheese once sat there is a 18" across hole in the floor. You can clearly see it opens into a sinkhole behind the special reserve. You nose detects the foul damp smell of decaying flesh from a breeze that is now wafting into the room through the hole. You also see the glint of metal in the hole.

There are no more sounds of squeaking or scampering of rats.

Dwobwick looks at the hole and back at his companions. He's obviously the smallest and lets out a small sigh as he hikes up his trousers and proceeds to crawl down into the hole to see what the little devils gathered for themselves.

"I bettew get an A on this!"

Drindrin watches appreciatively as the fire scorches the rats, but scowls and swears under his breath when he notices the rats still moving. "Well," he says resignedly, "am I a dragon or not?" and rushes headfirst, jaws wide, towards the twitching mass of rats.

EDIT: Drindrin spits out filthy burnt hair and rat's blood. "Blech... That's disgusting, but I suppose I've tasted worse." He grins, but his expression turns sour as he smells the stink emanating from the rat hole. "Ugh... What's down there bro?"

You find the bottom of a deep, dank sinkhole that appears to connect to a small ledge up 20ft. The breeze is coming from there, but you don't see any way to climb up, and the only holes you see up there would be tiny. In the bottom of the hole you see something more disturbing. There is the skeleton of a human, dressed in the tattered remains of a head chef's outfit. His name tag is still legible, reading “Devan, head cook”. Next to him is a box labeled "Cafeteria Lost and Found" and a bag labeled "Daily Cash". In the box is a medium sized breastplate, and the bag contains 307gp in gold.

The body was clearly chewed by rats.

"Whoa..." Drindrin says, after putting a claw over his nostrils and mustering the wherewithal to look down into the hole.

Dwobwick fights the urge to hurl his lunch onto the skeletal remains as the smell of rot has grown almost intolerable here.

"... I found Devan. He must have fallen ow something and then the wats took him down hewe. It left a big hole when he hit his head." Dwobwick pinches the skeleton's clothes and tries desperately to not touch the body as he drags it into plain view for the others.

After rooting around in the goodies to see what's there, Dwobwick pops up out of the hole and hands off the breastplate and coins before heading back in one more time.

Drindrin keeps his eyes on Dwobwick in case the gnome slips and needs a Feather Fall.

(OOC: Doesn't Robert have access to fancy movement modes through his special Transmuter power? Ah well.)

Dwobwick collects the 2 Cure Light Wounds potions from the table in the pasteurization room. "Well... I guess Devan won't be needing these now."

Dwobwick helps the others carve the wheel into manageable chunks. It's a heavy load for the stereotypical musculo-deficient adolescents, but with the Unseen Servant carrying 20 pounds, the other 4 divvy up the remaining 130 lbs without too much difficulty and begin the trek back up the stairs and to the kitchen.

"We should pwobbly tell Smee about the body..." he says as they carve into the cheese.

You walk to the entrance of the cellar without any trouble. The areas are all explored and the way clear of rats. Funny you should mention Smee. You see the head chef as you enter the first room, standing in the middle of the room. He is bent down, cradling a rat that you killed. He looks up at you sharply with a look of fear and anger in his eyes. He smooths his face over and drops the rat before turning towards you.

"You found the cheese I see. You didn't find anything else... interesting... down there did you?"

"As it happens we did." Drindrin eyes Smee for any sign of a reaction (his Sense Motive sucks, but hey, whatever). "This place is infested with rats. Or it was anyway. We took care of them for you. You're welcome."

(OOC: Do I need to make a bluff check for this? I'm not actually saying anything that's not true.)

Somewhat oblivious to the reality of the situation, Dwobwick continues with some of the details. "You might need a new doow fow the cheese making woom though... thought we heawd squeaking." Dwobwick notices Illven is still carrying the silver staff. "Oh, uh... we kinda used this to kill some of them. You might want to... wash it ow something befowe you use it again fow cheese. Ow just don't use it. That'd be weally disgusting."

Squee Mcwiskers looks at the group with a glare in his eyes for a moment, clearly judging what you said and weighing attacking you. After a moment, he shrugs and snaps at you.

"Good, just get out of here right now. Your professor needs his sandwich after all. Pippin can do that part. I will say down here and... clean up a bit"

He moves around you and heads back into the cellar, leaving the path to the kitchens free.

Dwobwick hustles as fast as he can up the stairs and back to the kitchen where there's safety in the form of other people Smee doesn't want to kill. He offloads the cheese onto whichever table or cart Pippin indicates and waits impatiently for the sandwich.

Pippin smiles as he sees you.

"Golly, it's good to see you back here. Smee was useless all lunch with worry. I guess he was really concerned about the rat problem we have been having. I hope nobody got hurt."

He takes the cheese, and in a flash he prepares a rich savory sandwich, that looks completely appetizing until he douses the whole thing is a sauce from a red tube labeled with depictions of fire and a skull and crossbones. He slaps the sandwich (of respectable size, but not so large as to be heavy) into your hands, along with a very large cherry pie and a small barrel of lantern oil.

"You just run that right up to the professor and we can all carry on with out day!"

As the group walks toward Alfred's office, Drindrin turns to his companions. "We should tell Uncle Alfred about the body. Smee's gonna figure out that we found it."

Dwobwick's eyes go wide at the size of the pie. He could almost swim in the thing! At least take a delicious bath. As they walk down the hall he breaks off a piece of the crust and munches on it.

"We should tell him Smee wan out of his gouda," he replies with a chuckle. "But yeah, Pwofessow Alfie will know what to do."

Dwobwick makes sure to leave the pie out of view in the hall when they enter the classroom.

"Hey Uncle Alfred," Drindrin says upon entering the room. "We brought your sandwich." He pauses for a moment before continuing. "We also wanted to talk to you about something we found in the storage room. The body of the old head chef is down there, and it looks like Head Cook Smee is the one who killed him."
