The Lady seems to blink and tilt her head for a moment, taking in what he has said. She nods imperceptibly, having adjusted herself appropriately to the situation.

It has been as it always is. I make the coffee, I stoke the fire. I am here, as it is expected. Might I offer you a fresh cup of coffee, or would you prefer some cold water? Browse the shelves, and you may find something to suit your needs. Or perhaps it will find you? It happens that way sometimes.

The Lady shrugs and sips her coffee.

"Plenty of merchants. Some just passing through, some permanent. At least one came purely to turn a profit here."

"A handful of newcomers. Most people here are elders. Few children roam the streets."

"They're hiding something. Every one of them. ...They may not even be aware of it, yet."

A new day means a lot of things for a con artist merchant. For Eli, it meant it was time to see just how sturdy those borders were. However, beforehand Eli was going to need the type of courage that came from the bottom of a bottle, and thus set about trying to find a bar in this town.
Yuppies won't even know what hit'em, heh he.
He thought, scheming quietly to himself. He ignored the fact of the huge smooth barrier between him and his partner on the outside for the moment. That wouldn't be a problem for someone like him. (It should be noted at this point that Eli thought himself severely less afflicted by age and still in the spry body of his youth. He was closer to it than you might think.)
But first, a bar. Every town had a bar, except for that one place full of those strange gentleman. What had they called themselves?
Sounded Goidelic. Definitely Goidelic.
Eli affirmed to himself. Everyone knew that the Goidelic peoples kept far away from drink.
He didn't worry about the tent. Nobody was stupid enough to think it had anything valuable in it, just gillyweed (which looked like wolfsbane, but was actually very common from where Eli was raised.) and a few bullions, all forged. But forged very well.
And so Eli hurried along the street, looking for a tavern. Or maybe a bar. Either one would do.

The man, after having finished cleaning up his place, unlocks the door and turns the open/closed sign so that you can read "open" from outside. It's a small, dark building in one of the secondary roads of the town and above the only door of the building is a small sign reading: BAR

The village drunk stumbles into the bar as soon as it opens. She wasn't even drunk yet, and already she was stumbling about. "KeYeep!" she hiccups."A shoyot a borbon, if'n ya please, my good man." Alexia makes her way to a stool, and climbs up it as if reaching the top of an insurmountable peak. Her eyes are bloodshot, from a lack of sleep.

Everyone who's lived in town for a while knows her story. She was the mail-order bride of Erlund Brogin. She had seemed to be happy with her situation, and her husband was pleased as well. They were making a life for themselves, when tragedy struck. What had been reported as a hunting accident had left her a widow, and she fell hard. The only place she finds comfort is at the bottom of a bottle.

The schoolteacher wanders into the newly minted "bar", sits down, and orders an absinthe. She says to the bartender, "So...This stuff about werewolves, huh. They could be any one of us. I think, however, that peddler (Count Dingdong) who's new in town could be the source of this...Think about it. New...mysterious...He could have infected a few of villagers to form a pack, and now he's trying to wipe the rest of us out!"

[Zar Peter]

The man nods at the city drunk as he poors a glass of bourbon. As usual he stretches it a bit with water, not that there's less alcohol in it but just that she has more to drink and therefore don't order too often.

There you are, Alexia! Not too fast this time, you should savour the taste!

Then he turns to the schoolteacher, and, while he prepares the drink, speaks to her:

Ah yes, the werewolves. But haven't we already payed someone to get rid of them for us? You mean they really could spread their... werewolviness around? Weird. Ah well, here's your drink!

and he hands her over a glass with a sparkling green liquid in it.

The schoolteacher nods and takes a sip before saying, "That's what the old stories say, at least. 'Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.'...Or, at least, that's how the old verse goes. We need to watch ourselves, to be sure."

Leaving the Merchant

Val offers Eli's wares one more glance before leaving, giving the "merchant" no niceties in return for his time. The cloaked gentleman didn't know what to make of him yet, so he'd find information elsewhere. Hmm maybe he could listen in on some conversations at The Bar. He arrives just as the talk of werewolves begins, slipping in quietly and taking a table bathed in dancing shadows. He's easy to miss, and the other villagers could forget he's there entirely. Val Kanias raises his hood to cover his face and leans his quarterstaff in the crook of his arm.
While listening to the people speak, he'll close his eyes and pretend to doze off, lulled into slumber by the atmosphere of the relatively quiet village. could be anyone...possibly Sabeki Eli... he mumbles under his breath.

The sign on the tailor shop is switched from closed to open. The sign is carved in wood.

The young priest was beginning to lose hope after 4 years of preaching and converting to the faith. He had managed to enlightened a small congregation of villagers and they had even built a small library to worship in. But the masses were still unconvinced, the old beliefs were stronger than his masters had anticipated.
But his time was coming, that summer the town had drawn down demonic attention on itself and most of the population were afflicted with bloody diarrhoea. The young and the old died every day, and the young adults grew ever weaker.

A new day dawned.
The priest had been up most of the night preparing the corpse of the late Mr. Penguin, cleaning the body as well as possible and rubbing the skin with various oils. And yet he'd have to perform the ritual rubbing twice more before the body could be properly cremated and continue its ascension.
Reflecting this and since he was feeling unwell the priest confined himself with Tiddles in his study adjacent to the library, studying the few texts the library possessed on the heretical intruders.

Bereft their spiritual leaders guidance some of the faith decided to harass Chandra the Witch (BourgeoisJerry) by following after her and chanting passages from the book of true words.

The bar filled and the man behind the counter noticed all who were arriving. Some were drinking a lot, some were drinking less and some were just sitting there, doing nothing. Well, as long as the bar wasn't filled completely with patrons the man was fine with that. He was not going to ask them what they want, they had to come to the bar and place their order.

I assume Peddler's me, considering my character's name is, quite literally, the Peddler. And wow! I get the honor of first few votes! How great!

What is there to explain? I'm modifying a character I play elsewhere, since it fits the theme pretty well. I'm a salesman, little more, maybe much less. I care little for these werewolves scaring potential buyers and want them out of here so I can peddle my wares and get out of here with a profit and my life. I'm generally going to start days displaying the items in my shop, and I'll move to where the action is if I don't get much attention there. Right now, that seems to be the bar.

Mind you, no one was imaginative enough to pretend they're humans, phah. Probably some prank to chase away competition that backfired, methinks. My money's on that hack Eli (Sabeki). Even I can tell he's too greedy for a sell..."

Tander browses the shelves of the Green Dragon searching for a particular book. Finally, he finds it, a red leather bound one entitled The Beasts of the Wild. He pulls it off the shelf, and finds a comfortable chair to sit and read in.

Alexia takes the offered drink, muttering something under her breath about minding ones own business, and chugs near half the beverage down in defiance. Werewolveseses. She says, spinning around to face the school teacher. Thems been here long for a while now. The furry freaks poblemly killeded my dear Erlund.

She slips off the stool, the back of her skirt lifting unlady-like for a moment, as she steps in closer. Her eyes wide. Are ya sayin' the preacher {Elder Tsofu} is a wererwolf? she asks, likely invading the teacher's personal space. She reeks of booze and smoke.

The Lady glances up at the sound of Tander's voice. You are looking for wolfmen, Small One? It seems a topic much on people's tongues of recent years. There may be tomes from other times, or drawings of the wolves by The Elemental Art League. Over the years, many things have made there way into this shop. I hardly know what may be found anymore.

She sips her coffee and returns her attention to the book she is reading.

The teacher calmly sips at her drink and says, "Maybe...It could be any one of us. The only way to tell is if they get careless. And some of us will probably die by then..." Her voice cracks and she says morosely, "Why do you think I'm drinking? I don't want to die..."

Alexia's jaw drops at that revelation. She wipes her mouth, then goes back to her seat. Hey! Barmister. Keepum coming. The teacher says drink stops the illness. She throws back the rest of the first glass, then pushes toward the edge.

Amazingly, it does go over. Seems she has a keen awareness that if she breaks another glass, they won't give her no more to drink.

"Really? Is the drink here different than others? Most places I go the drink is super heavy. Thoughts and walking and decisions get all burdened and tend to flail about."

The gentleman with the sand blown hair seated himself on a stool nearby, grinning toward the teacher and bride. He had angled between the creaking doors after shadowing the hooded one into the establishment. As the wraith seemed uninterested in socializing, he had quickly pivoted toward the chattering activity.

"If things get too sloshy before the attack comes, you're like as not to see it coming. Seems anti-logical to me. If you mean to survive, I mean.What do they call people who imbibe like a profession? Badgers? Skunks? Whatever. Point is, none of those would take a wolf in a fight. And why is it called wolf's baneif it's blooming signals the wolves beleaguering us? Typically, …"

Suddenly he stopped, and seemed to take stock of his intrusion.

"Oh, sorry. My name is Matthias. Matthias Jacobus. Prolly obvious to small town, but I'm new here. Getting a bit jazzed with all this activity and new people and looming death over our heads."

He paused, and waved serenely to the bartender.

"Lemonade please. If that's out, something light that won't stab my temples when I wake up in the late hours. Or the special. Do you have a special?"

[BourgeoisJerry]

Chandra, for her part, tries to be patient with her harassers. She walks briskly, keeps her eyes forward, and says nothing, though her one free hand is clenched into a fist. When she is within a few blocks of her destination, she makes like she is going to continue forward, then doubles back and takes off running down a side road as fast as her legs will carry her. She is out of breath by the time she reaches the Banister house, but at least she's confident that those sheep from the church didn't follow her.

It truly is amazing how riled up some people can get over silly superstitions. It can also be truly infuriating, though Chandra can't afford to stay angry for long. Mrs. Banister is about to go into labor, and Chandra has a lot of work ahead of her. If she's lucky, labor will only last a few hours. If the Banisters are lucky, their family will last more than a few days.

((Elder Tsofu, for obvious reasons. Nothing personal of course; I'm glad you took the witch thing and ran with it. But I don't have any in-character justification for voting for anybody else yet, so you get to be my opening target.))
