Limited (Delayed Results): This Limit curtails the effect of a Healing power by making it function more like Regeneration. The power only removes one condition per round; if it achieves multiple degrees of success, additional conditions are removed in successive rounds with no further effort required. For example, if the healer rolls a 20 on the Healing check, the power would remove three total conditions - one immediately, one a round later, and one two rounds later. In addition, powers with this Limit must remove Bruises before any other conditions, rather than removing the most severe conditions first as normal (once all Bruises are removed, other conditions are removed in normal order of severity). The power cannot remove more conditions than the target has currently suffered at the time of healing; if a target only has two Bruises, for example, and the healer rolls a 25 on the Healing check, it will only remove two total conditions rather than the four it could have removed with that roll, even if the target receives further damage over the course of the next four rounds. The exact conditions removed may vary however; if the above target were Bruised and Staggered, and then received another Bruise, it would still only remove two conditions total, but they would be the two Bruises rather than one of the Bruises and the Stagger. A new instance of a Delayed Result Healing power on the same target immediately ends the previous Healing.

    Spoiler: Complications
    Show
No Mere Healer [Motivation - Recognition]: Lira is more than happy to take on the forces of the Void, though in truth, while she respects the importance of the mission, what really drives her is the glory. Growing up with four older siblings, the closest to her in age still five years her senior, she's pretty much sick to death of being the baby of the family. Similarly, the last thing she wants is to be relegated to the role of a mere healer - she's a laser-shooting battle-mage out to save the world from evil!

What a Rush! [Addiction]: With a touch, Lira can cure injury and banish pain in an instant. The rush of positive energy as it flows through the body and cures injuries does tend to induce a mild feeling of euphoria...which is only increased if the subject is, for example, charged so full of positive energy that every sensation is intensified. Lira enjoys the feeling of her healing powers rather too much. It causes her to subconsciously seek out dangerous situations and put herself in harm's way (giving her the excuse to heal herself). It also makes her more likely to heal herself even when fairly trivially injured, even when attacking or maneuvering would be a more tactically viable option.

Healer and Hero [Obsession]: Although Lira enjoys the glory of battle and is devoted to the mission of fighting the Void, she doesn't go without understanding just how much good her powers can do outside of that field. Although she knows she can't heal everyone, it is very hard for her to pass by someone who is sick or injured without at least trying. This can be a distraction in battle, or make it hard to keep her powers secret.

Can't Heal Everyone [Power Loss]: The power to heal is a potent one, and not without its limits. While Lira has more than enough power to keep up with a team of heroes during battle, she can't just go around healing every injured person she can find. Too much healing, especially in a short time, will degrade Lira's powers, including her Regenerist ability.

Friends and Family [Relationship]: Lira has her circle of friends, and is close with her parents and her four older siblings.

High School Campaigning [Responsibility/Rival]: Aside from her actual close friends, Lira's rather popular in general at her school, and is campaigning for class president. This puts some extra demands on her time above and beyond the normal requirements of high school. It also means she has to deal with other contenders for the seat, primary among them Ken Matsu, a young man she's had a rivalry with since grade school (and her best friend's boyfriend).

Intensified Senses [Weakness]: Lira's senses are heightened when transformed. This is a significant asset, but comes with a drawback. Lira takes a -5 penalty on resistance checks against any form of attack that directly assails the senses, such as blinding light, sonic bursts, or overwhelming scents. Even mundane stimuli can be painful, disorienting, or harmful to her in this state at certain extremes, potentially causing various hindrances at GM discretion. Her armor helps to mute this, reducing the penalty to -2 and preventing all but the most extreme of mundane stimuli from causing her undue distress.

    Spoiler: Power Descriptions
    Show
Lira's Lifestone allows her to channel potent positive energy. Primarily for healing, this raw life force can nonetheless be focused into a potent weapon.

Practical Magic - Healing Touch [Energy] [Positive]: Even at rest, Lira's Lifestone allows her to tap into and strengthen the life energy of others with a touch, banishing pain and healing injuries over the course of several seconds.

Healing Word [Energy] [Positive]: While transformed, Lira can heal others simply by speaking the word "Halcyon", beaming positive energy down upon them. Her basic Healing Touch no longer requires physical contact.

Wellspring of Light [Energy] [Positive] [Light]: When not wearing her armor, the ambient positive energy that it contains and channels instead disperses harmlessly into the air, radiating out as a bright light that clearly illuminates everything within thirty feet of Lira.

Angelic Armor [Energy] [Positive]: Lira's costume is a light suit of pristine white armor, complete with white wings composed of steel feathers. The armor not only offers substantial protection, but it absorbs and contains the positive energy that wells up from Lira's spirit when transformed. Without the armor, much of this energy dissipates into useless light, but while wearing it, this ambient power is retained and put to use for personal defense and augmentation.

Enchanted Mail: Lira's armor is empowered by the ambient positive energy it contains, allowing it to resist physical, mental, and physiological attacks alike. It's not perfectly sealed like a battlesuit; it's normal armor with a medieval look, and steel at its base, so the protection isn't perfect or impervious by any means, but it's still quite strong.

Regenerist: The wellspring of positive energy retained by Lira's armor surrounds her in a constant flow of healing magic, rapidly curing her injuries. In fact, when the armor is breached, the sudden surge of positive energy around that area is sufficient to instantly heal her from damage even as it is inflicted, effectively resulting in reduced damage taken before taking her healing factor into account.

Divine Costume: In her armor, Lira appears as nothing so much as a shining angelic champion, her armor softly glowing with the light it contains. Her personal presence (and, frankly, her own self-confidence) is noticeably increased in her armor. The wings attached to the armor are enchanted, and allow for flight at speeds of up to 250 miles per hour. The armor substantially curtails the waste energy beaming from her spirit; it still glows softly, not bright enough to see by, but certainly bright enough to ruin most attempts at stealth and cause her to stand out clearly in darkness.

Intensified Senses: When in her armor, the positive energy that suffuses Lira's body intensifies every sensation. Her senses all become sharper, her eyesight becomes eagle-keen and her night vision wondrously acute. Her sense of touch becomes so intense that she can feel the location of nearby creatures and objects just from vibrations and stirrings in the air. Her hearing becomes precise enough to pick up on even the subtlest of inflections, which also makes it much easier to discern when others are lying.

Channel Positive Energy [Energy] [Positive]: In addition to the various passive benefits of having a wellspring of positive energy in her soul, Lira can direct her spiritual energy outwardly as healing light. Although the energy she evokes is primarily a curative force, it is still raw energy; she can focus it into dangerously powerful beams to attack with, if she needs to.

Soulcharged Healing: When transformed, Lira can channel far more healing energy. While it takes somewhat more effort, she can heal more severe injuries, as well as curing various debilitations. Soulcharged Healing requires touch; it cannot be used through a Healing Word.

Energy Beams: Lira can fire a barrage of short, powerful beams of positive energy, about a foot or so in diameter. Narrowly focused in this way, any healing the energy might otherwise provide is more than outmatched by sheer concussive force.

Energy Bolt: By focusing her energy further, and unleashing it all at once rather than as a rapid barrage, Lira can achieve a devastatingly powerful cohesive beam that more resembles a bolt of living lightning than a laser. The beam fires straight for a single target and from there bounces from enemy to enemy under Lira's control. While the beam is precisely directed by Lira's will, it only "chains" upon reaching a target and must thereafter continue along a new straight-line path until reaching a new opponent. It also is not otherwise selective. The beam packs intense penetrating power, capable of piercing pretty much any armor or forcefield; the most applicable defense is to avoid the beam entirely. Its piercing nature is such that even incorporeal foes are subject to it, and it can skip through the veil between the Void dimension to attack foes on the other side, the life energy that makes it up instantly sealing the tear. The beam also cauterizes wounds as it inflicts them, making them much harder to heal.

Overheal: Now, generally, to actually hurt someone, Lira needs to focus her positive energy into a narrow beam, so that instead of flowing into them as curative power, it hammers them like a cohesive bolt of energy. That said, "too much of a good thing" exists. By touching a target, Lira can channel a massive payload of positive energy into it, too much for the body to process. This attack basically disintegrates cells as every molecule is so overloaded with energy that rather than reknitting, they simply fly apart. The positive energy also overloads the target's senses, intensifying every sensation and creating a feeling of euphoria that is at best distracting, at worst completely overloading all the target's perceptions. Finally, a charge of positive energy remains within the creature, infusing its own offenses; the result is a degredation of offensive power as every attack carries a charge of energy that instantly heals some or all of the damage done.

Blaze of Life: Lira can unleash a blazing aura of healing light, rushing out to fill the area within sixty feet of her. Most creatures in that area, be they friend or foe, receive a charge of positive energy that can heal several injuries over the course of a few seconds. Void creatures in the area, however, have their negative energy directly countered by positive, suffering severe damage that is difficult for them to recover from. Radiating out this much positive energy is draining, so Lira can only do so when she is herself uninjured.

    Spoiler: Description
    Show
Lira stands a couple inches over five feet tall, with a slim build. She has dark green eyes and shoulder-length blond hair, which she typically wears tied in some manner - braids, a ponytail, pigtails, a topknot, whatever, depending on her mood. Her features are clear and expressive, and her voice has a noticeable melodic quality. She is sixteen years old. When transformed, her clothes change to a light suit of pure white armor, complete with a visored helm with a gold band around the forehead that resembles a halo, and wings made of white steel "feathers" that sprout from the back.

Lira's an outgoing, enthusiastic person. She's rather aggressive, socially speaking, not at all afraid to speak her mind and having no qualms talking to adults as if she was a peer. She is on the debate team at her school, and running for class president; she's rather fond of being in the spotlight. She tends towards blunt honesty; she has a strong belief in the truth and isn't a skilled liar in any case. Similarly, she expects the truth from others, and can become quite furious if she finds someone intentionally deceiving her. She isn't fond of secrets, but they don't bother her as much. Tell her you're not going to tell her something, she'll accept it with good grace; tell her a lie instead, and she'll be quite angry if she finds out.

She's friendly in general and affectionate to those she cares for. However, she is extremely competitive, and plays to win in any sort of contest or competition. She can be a bit of a sore loser, and likewise, a bit of a boastful winner. People who don't take a game or contest seriously annoy her, and she's not above exploiting their distraction for an advantage. She also isn't above playing the people rather than the game, or engaging in some rules-lawyering, although to be fair, she'll be equally scrupulous about the rules whether they benefit or hinder her - she'll just make it a point to seek out the situations where they most benefit her.

She doesn't really have the strength or skill to be much of a physical fighter in her mundane life (although she's taken aikido classes, and if forced to fight can be a surprisingly aggressive attacker). She very much has a fighter's attitude though; she can be rather confrontational, it's just that she's more likely to dispense a righteous tongue-lashing than a beat-down. She does have a pretty strong sense of right and wrong, and doesn't like seeing other people hurt or bullied. Nonetheless, her first instinct on seeing such is to confront the attacker, rather than comfort the victim. Though her compassion and generally protective attitude makes her well-suited to healing powers, her aggressive nature and desire for personal glory are what allow her to turn those powers to such an effective offensive use. Nonetheless, she does sometimes regret that she doesn't have more raw attack power.

    Spoiler: Relationships
    Show
Lira's parents are Seida and Aiden Hikari. Her mother is a director at a local hospital; not a practicing doctor herself (although she's licensed) but involved more on the business end. Her father is an attorney. They're both fairly busy, but try to make time at least every other weekend for family occasions (missing them is...discouraged).

Lira has four older siblings, two brothers and two sisters; Aimi, Ren, Keiko, and Shiro in descending order of age. They're all closer in age to each other than to her (Shiro is 21, Ren and Keiko 23, Aimi 24), and they still tend to treat her as the baby of the family. Which annoys her, but she loves them anyway. Shiro is in the military, Ren and Keiko are taking after their parents (Ren in medical school, Keiko is law school). Aimi is a real estate agent.

Her closest friend since kindergarten is Mai Kamura, who is something of a brainiac. Very intent in her studies anyway, straight A student who makes it look easy. She tends to play the role of voice of reason to Lira. Lira, meanwhile, does her best to get Mai out of her books and into the world on occasion. Despite their differences, they do bring out the best in each other.

Ken Matsu is Mai's boyfriend, and a constant rival of Lira. The two of them can range from vitriolic best buds on a good day to outright hateful; they do have a certain amount of respect for each other, it's just that they're both highly competitive and have big egos. Their rivalry is definitely currently running hot since they're both competing for class president this year.

Finally is Mrs. Nirumi, Lira's favorite teacher. Although this is the first year that Lira's had her regular (sociology) class, Mrs. Nirumi has been her aikido instructor for three years (she teaches self defense courses on weekends). A sixty-three year old woman with a grandmotherly demeanor (which is covering the no-nonsense discipline of a lifelong martial arts master), what even Lira doesn't know (yet, anyway) is that she was one of the first wielders of a Life Stone back in the sixties.

A role playing game is three things. It is an interactive story, a game of chance, and a process in critical thinking.

    Spoiler: Complications
    Show

Motivation (Helping People; Escapism): Himeko acts rough and devil-may-care, but she cares about people more than she’d have them think. She has her own sense of justice, and will go out of her way to help the helpless and punish the wicked, void-born or mundane.

She also loves being a magical girl because it lets her play another part for a while. With the mask on, she isn’t Kiyotaka Himeko, the eldest daughter of a corporate empire, but a confident, powerful and noble young woman: a true heroine. As a magical girl, she can do things that she couldn’t have even dreamed of before, and she cherishes the opportunity. She is a little prone to melodrama when transformed, wearing the air of a performer at all times.

Identity: Himeko keeps the magical girl part of her life a closely guarded secret, from her family, her classmates and even other magical girls.

Relationship: Himeko’s relationship with her parents is strained. They consider her a disappointment; she considers them arrogant and oblivious. However, she does care for her little brother, five years her junior. Their parents were never around, so she feels a grudging protectiveness for the boy.

Reputation: Himeko has a reputation as something of a delinquent. Teachers and other students would be quick to assume she is in the wrong in any conflict. In addition, her family is well known for their wealth, so she can draw some unwelcome attention at times.

Responsibility: As a student, Himeko’s expected to attend school, do homework and attend basketball practices. She doesn’t care about skipping occasionally, but too much would cause unwanted trouble. In addition, her parents expect her to attend certain social functions befitting her ‘place in society’, regardless of whether or not the world needs saving right then.

    Spoiler: Description
    Show

A slender, dark-haired wisp of a girl, Himeko stands at an unimposing 5-foot-nought (150 cm even) and just under 100 lbs (~45 kg), below average even for a Japanese girl. The daughter of CEOs just as powerful – and twice as petty – as the kings and queens of yore, she is beautiful, poised and well groomed: the epitome of the modern-era princess in her silks, frankincense and myrrh…

Until she gets out of her mother and father’s sight, at which point a scowl forms on her lips and a harsh glare scorches the hide off of anyone who dares use any word even remotely similar to princess. She speaks roughly, without much regard for the politeness generally woven into the Japanese language, often injecting English profanity when particularly annoyed. Without the professionally applied makeup and elegant dress, faded scars become visible and her athletic physique becomes more apparent. Though certainly small of frame, she’s perfectly capable of – and willing to – get physical if it comes to it. It is almost comical, for everyone except the person being hit.

Like many teenagers, Himeko is a girl struggling with her self-identity. In the company of her parents, she plays the perfect daughter, unable to truly scorn their wishes. In public, she’s a scowling delinquent and an outspoken cynic, known for skipping classes and getting into fights. When the creatures of the Void emerge, she puts on the mask of a heroine, battling evil with powers gained from a mysterious precursor race. Quietly, she is a bit of a geek, loving all kinds of media from anime to theater plays, a girl who dreams of becoming a famous actress, eliciting joy and sorrow alike from audiences around the world. She wears a multitude of personae, myriad masks, but she isn’t completely happy with any of them.

Costume: The upper half of Velvet Mask’s costume looks like just that: a costume, rather than any sort of armor. It takes the form of a black, tailed tuxedo jacket over a starched white shirt, with a crimson rose pinned to the lapel. In place of tuxedo pants, however, the costume involves an elegant black skirt hemmed with lace, with dark boots and white gloves completing the set. In addition, a black, velvet cape is wrapped around her shoulders, and the classic Phantom of the Opera half mask covers the right side of her face. The outfit is comfortable and well-fitted, allowing for a wide range of motion.

It’s the costume that makes the character, so all of Velvet Mask’s powers are marked removable, but not easily removable. A certain je ne sais quoi keeps the costume together, preventing her from being disarmed without being first incapacitated.

    Spoiler: Relationships
    Show

Shizuko Yokoyama and Jin Kiyotaka are Himeko’s parents. Both her parents were old money entrepreneurs, CEOs of multi-million dollar companies. To the surprise of many – and the outright disbelief of some, including Himeko – their marriage was one of love rather than economics. Nevertheless, they’re far from romantics; in fact, both are pragmatic, imposing and distant figures, equals in shrewdness. Perhaps that was why they got along so well.

Himeko has a troubled relationship with her parents. Out of distaste for being a “rich girl”, teenage rebelliousness, and perhaps a desire for attention from absent parents, she acts out in what ways she can, skipping classes at school, dressing “improperly” and getting into fights. Yet she doesn’t truly hate them, and can’t bear to disobey them directly.

Hiro Kiyotaka is Himeko’s 11 year old younger brother. A polite and intelligent child, he is much less of a disappointment to their parents, excelling academically and socially. Himeko genuinely cares for him; she has few friends and her parents are rarely around, so he is one of the few people she feels close to.

The teaching staff of Mirayama Academy doesn’t like Himeko very much. She gets into trouble often enough that they expect it from her, and many treat her with disdain. Not that she doesn’t deserve it a little; she’s fairly disdainful towards them as well. If it wasn’t for her parents’ money and connections, she probably would have gotten kicked out already. Most of the few teachers and counselors that tried to connect with her have given up already.

The general student body of Mirayama Academy doesn’t like Himeko much either. She’s seen as a delinquent and a troublemaker by many, and her sarcastic, biting attitude doesn't help that. She doesn’t really get along with other “bad eggs” either, as they tend to be the people she gets into fights with, usually when she’s trying to stop them from doing something that offends her sense of justice.

Ironically, although her rebelliousness stems from her desire to be her own person, separate from her parents’ money and family name, many students see her as a spoiled rich girl, able to do whatever she wants because of her wealth. Himeko is largely a loner, and has been trying to fool herself into believing that she prefers it that way.

Girls’ basketball team captain Aoi Fujioka believes in Himeko. She was the one that dragged Himeko into the basketball team, and has made it her personal mission to make sure every team member is doing great. She pesters Himeko to be more diligent and tries to cheer her up. Although this irritates Himeko at times, she finds herself bemused by the Aoi’s passion and genuine belief that Himeko is actually a good person. It’s refreshing to be cared about.

2KoRo is an online pen-pal that Himeko met on an online messageboard. Although she doesn't know 2KoRo's real name, gender or age, she considers the user a friend. The anonymity makes Himeko more comfortable with talking about herself - though she has avoided putting up personal information - and 2KoRo is the only person she's confided her troubles in. Interestingly enough, it may be that Himeko behaves most like her real self when in her online persona.

    Spoiler: Power Design Notes
    Show
Velvet Mask's gloves are keyed to utility powers like illusions, teleportation, invisibility and the creation of objects, themed around stage magic: special effects and props. For direct combat, her cape - the Cape of Creatures, though I'm considering Movie Monster Mantle for the extra bit of alliteration - conjures up a variety of body parts cribbed from mythological, movie and comic book monsters. Combat tentacles, basilisk eyes, wings and projectile quills. Her mask is keyed to passive buffs, which improve her defenses and general combat ability.

Her soul gem Life Stone's practical magic is basically the disguise pen. It was a major pain to make it fit 4 points though, because morph is really expensive... I had to figure out enough drawbacks that fit thematically. It takes a deception check to activate - which makes sense, she has to picture the disguise - takes a full standard action to use and the process is distracting, causing her to become vulnerable after using it. That means it's pretty much reserved as an out-of-combat power, which fits the idea of "practical magic".

Yankee Cheer is Yuki Jackson, daughter of an american soldier and the local girl he fell in love with. After visiting her grandparents' ranch in Texas as a child, Yuki fell in love with the USA in general and cowboys in particular. She's as much a Texan as a girl raised in Nagashima can be. She often peppers her conversations with 'y'all's and other american slang, she loves country music, and she's a cheerleader for Nagashima Public's American Football team. She also inherited her daddy's blonde hair and some other more, um, Texan physical features. You know what they say, everything's bigger in Texas. And she speaks in Royal Blue.

Looks like Yuki and Himeko might run into one another.

Now what kind of misunderstanding is most likely to lead to an awkwardly sans-superpower fist-fight of friendship? Or y'know, band together against evil.

But that's not why we're here, right?
