Default OotS Style - What program do you use?

    Heya Artists,

I recently got inspired to doodle some OotS inspired avatars, and was enjoying it so far. I wanted to keep do it as a regular thing, but I felt quickly limited by the software I am using, Paint.Net. My lines either end up too blurry (with anti-aliasing on), or too pixelated, and that is before scaling pictures down to forum size. Blurry is often frustration when dealing with selecting parts, or filling fields with a color but does look decent on small avatar-size pictures. Pixels work far easier, but look so much more jarring.
I don't know a lot about art software and all that, but I figured I needed something else. I understand a vector based program might be the solution, but I have no clue what the good ones are.
So I come to you with the simple question: What program do you use for making OotS style artwork/avatars?

P.S. Some other general hints are also welcome, especially on the subject of dealing with blurry lines, pixelated lines or downscaling and how it ruins images.
Current avatar by me. Just started making them but if you have a simple request, I can make you a simple avatar too.

I use normal MS paint, because Paint.net irritates me to no end, but most people use Inkscape.

A lot of people round here use Inkscape.

It's free and pretty easy to use and learn vector drawing program.

Inkscape is (was) easily the most used program by the Playground's artists. There are multiple tutorials scattered throughout the forum. However, paint.net as well as MS Paint have their own loyal followings, and some of the best Oots images I've seen were made in MS paint. Gimp was pretty big here at one point too.

There are other fringe programs used, I heard the Giant himself uses Adobe Illustrator and I knew like 2 other people here that did too. But they're gone now and I myself use Adobe Flash and have met around the same amount of people here that did too. But they're gone as well. *shrugs*

But Oots artists are a dying breed here, anyway.

You're just more creative with it than most.

    Curious, why GIMP?

Also, what do you think of another DYF?

Everyone, thanks for suggesting Inkscape. I like it and it fits like a glove.

Now let's see if this becomes a permanent hobby or just something temporary. You might seem me around here in the future.

Well, when I started with Inkscape,(back in 2008, I think ?) it was still pretty limited in it's saving options out of .svg (it had a pretty crappy "convert to pdf" option that played havok with transparencies effects and that was about it as far as I remember). GIMP could open svg and save themin jpg then png with a very little tono loss of quality.

Now that Inkscape can directly save in .png however.... I... er... I guess I just hadn't noticed that the latest version could do that till you brought me on the subject, actualy ^^'

I actually use Paint.net. I make my avatars and such at 4x size (480 x 480 pixels for standard avatar) and color on different layers to the lineart. A trick I use when coloring is to duplicate the lineart to two layers, set the fill tolerance to 70%, and color on the lower layer. You fill the whole space without leaving any uncolored anti-aliased bits, but the lineart on the top layer leaves the anti-aliasing intact.

I'm also new at making avatars, and started out with Inkscape. It is easy and simple to use and understand. Made my current avatar with it. Hope it works out well for you.
