Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Ludo, Elsa, Viggo
SpoilerBriefly picturing a fight between Sieghard and Beppe- it was less entertaining than that between Elsa and Natasa, and had a far lower chance of roasted goat at the end- Ludo shrugged. "I was never entirely worried about any of this. There were always more interesting things to do."
A frown from Marek made him hop to his feet. "I hope it won't make anything too complicated."- Avatar by LCP -

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
All Bar Adelbert
SpoilerThe rest of the day passed without anything to remark upon. Elsa made her trip back to the palisade, and asked after targets and combustible materials among the halflings. The archery butts they used were disappointingly non-human-shaped, but one of Abdul's men showed her that the mercenary army was well-stocked with lamp oil. While it wasn't gunpowder, it would certainly suffice to create an impressive blaze.
It was towards the tail end of the day, when she had retired to her new quarters to make her plans, that she heard a faint commotion coming from the direction of the pass. With one of the wooden window shutters open, she could just about recognise the drifting sound of Adelbert's voice.
OOC:SpoilerNo more spoilers from here if you want to go see.
Adelbert
SpoilerIt was early evening by the time Adelbert reached the outskirts of Mirino. He'd taken the walk at a leisurely pace, giving his legs a chance to recover from his gruelling flight from Kheneb-Ptra-Urush. Fortified with good food and a decent night's rest, he was feeling much better about the world. He could even see the bright side of the last few days - he must be getting very fit.
Swinging wide around the town, he headed for the rocky teeth of the crater rim and scrambled back down onto the pass, opening a few new rips in his britches in the process. Dusting himself off, he hid the money the halflings had left him with under what he hoped was an inconspicuous stone, and set off determinedly towards the head of the pass - and the gates of Sforza's fortress.
There were sentries on the gate, as he expected - Sforza's own Tilean soldiers. They watched him approach, before one of them held up a hand. <Halt,> said the first. <What's your business in Mirino, stranger?>
Adelbert was composing his reply when a third figure detached itself from the shadows behind the gates. His heart fell to his boots as he recognised Al-Makir's man Rahim.
<This is Signor Schreiber,> he said. <Abdul speaks for him.>
He inclined his head towards Adelbert in the slightest of bows, with a smirk on his usually sullen face that Adelbert didn't like one bit. <You're wanted at the palace.>
OOC:SpoilerEnd spoilers here!
Hope I'm not treading on your toes here with how Adelbert approaches the town - just wanted to speed things along. If I'd been cleverer I'd have started this sequence a few Sieghard posts back.Last edited by LCP; 2014-09-02 at 03:57 PM.

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Adelbert Schreiber
Adelbert threw Rahim a filthy look, as if he barely restrained himself from spitting at him. <"If you wanted me you didn't look very hard! Do you know how long I was lying out there, left for dead? Believe me I want to speak with your master!">
With as much dignity as could muster in his filthy rags the scribe swept through the gate and strode towards the palace.Last edited by RossN; 2014-09-02 at 04:06 PM.

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Rahim said nothing, trailing close behind Adelbert as Adelbert headed for the palace. More guards stood aside at the Arabyan's reassurances, although Adelbert thought he saw at least one head off at speed ahead of them. It looked like he was going to give Abdul advance warning.
<This way,> said Rahim to Adelbert, gesturing to a side door. Following him through, Adelbert was disconcerted by the sudden change in his surroundings. They were in an unfinished-looking part of the palace, its long walls and low ceilings implying it might be intended as some kind of mess hall when it was done.
"Herr Schreiber," came Abdul's voice, echoing off the bare stone. Immediately, Adelbert could tell something was wrong. The Captain's paymaster had entered via the far door, and had five of his men with him. Armed men.
Behind Adelbert, there was a slam as Rahim pulled the door shut.
"I'm very glad to see you alive," called Abdul, approaching. "It's unfortunate we should meet under these circumstances."

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Adelbert Schreiber
"Indeed Abdul." Adelbert said, tone of scarcely repressed rage. "I ask, no not ask demand why no one was sent to search for me after I vanished? I must have been left unconcious for at least a whole day before I woke in a pool of my own blood with a splitting headache and not a schilling to my name."
He spat on the ground and jabbed a dirty finger in the direction of Rahim. "You couldn't even send your ape to check on me after everything I've done for this place?!"Last edited by RossN; 2014-09-02 at 04:43 PM.

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Abdul came closer, spreading his hands in a mollifying gesture. Adelbert couldn't tell if he was buying it.
"I am sorry to hear you say these things," he said. "Truly, I am. You must understand, the hills go on for many miles. I had no idea where your expedition was headed."
The mercenaries had kept pace with their master, and had now drifted nonchalantly into a loose crescent surrounding Adelbert. None was far enough away that they could not immediately move between Adelbert and Abdul.
"That was, until last night," Abdul corrected himself. "Your friends told us a remarkable story. You can imagine my concern when I saw you had not returned with them." He smiled solicitously. "I thank the gods that they laid my fears to rest." Sadly, he looked down and shook his head. "I only wish you had shared their good sense."
"Where is the gold, Herr Schreiber?"

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Adelbert Schreiber
Adelbert folded his arms to show Abdul's thugs he was not about to throttle their master. His expression was filled with disdain and anger however.
"Why don't you tell me Abdul? It was three Mirinese that robbed me unless theses hills are just crawling with random Tileans these days. Where is my gold Abdul? My gold?"

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
"Robbed by three Tileans," said Abdul. "You accuse the men of the Iron Company? The Captain will order a full inspection of the camp. So many strange coins should be difficult to conceal, no?" He paused. "Of course, if the gold was not found, the men would not like to be slandered so. A bold accusation, Herr Schreiber, very bold. The guilty parties will certainly be flogged."
He turned as if to leave, but hesitated and turned back.
"I must tell you, Herr Schreiber, your friends told us a different story." He paused. "They told us you were afraid the Captain would take your gold from you. That you went up into the rocks, to pass us by without being seen." He waited, watching Adelbert's face. "Are you sure that is not closer to the truth?"Last edited by LCP; 2014-09-02 at 05:14 PM.

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Adelbert Schreiber
Adelbert looked astonished - sincerely so. They sold me out?!
He quickly shot the Arabyian a look of deep disdain. "I would say that firstly my friends let their imagination run away with them, second that I would be very foolish to return to this dungheep if I still had the gold and thirdly.... just who do you think sent those soldiers, hmm?"
He laughed bitterly and gave the Arabyian a knowing look. "Perhaps your Captain has found a way to take all my gold from me after all?"
He was silent for a moment, visibly trying to control his anger. With grave dignity he said:
"I think you should know Abdul that the court can no longer any business from me."

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Abdul looked... disappointed.
"Herr Schreiber," he said, with a shake of his head. "If we had stolen your gold, I think I would know. But, I am afraid you are right. We will not be doing any further business."
He nodded, and two of his men stepped forward, seizing Adelbert's arms. Two more placed their hands on the hilts of their swords, while Rahim just stood there and smirked.
"Take his weapons and lock him up," said the paymaster, wearily. Adelbert noticed he was still using Reikspiel, the better for his captive to understand. "The Captain will want to speak to him in the morning."Last edited by LCP; 2014-09-02 at 05:31 PM.

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Abdul looked rather taken aback by Adelbert's venomous words. Still he made no move to stop his mercenaries as they dragged the scribe away.
Adelbert was frog-marched through the dark stone corridors of the palace and out into the palisade yard. There, a low, sturdy timber structure stood on foundations of packed stone behind the barrack blocks, its only windows small slit apertures high in its wooden walls.
One of the Arabyans selected an iron key from a heavy ring at his belt, and opened the reinforced door. Stripped of his weapons, Adelbert was propelled roughly over the threshold.
Inside, a rectangular pit had been dug in the raw earth, and covered over with heavy iron bars. This, it seemed, was Sforza's gaol. It looked like it had been designed for the confinement of drunken mercenaries, but it was currently empty, freeing it up for its new occupant.
A trapdoor was pulled open, and Adelbert was pitched inside. Bouncing off the wall of the pit, he pulled himself up out of the muck and slime at the bottom to see the trapdoor clang shut again. Even if it had been open, he could not reach it - standing on his tiptoes, the bars were still a good yard or so out of reach.
The door of the building swung shut as the Arabyans left, laughing and chattering in their own language. Inside, darkness descended.
Watching from the open window of her quarters in the barrack yard, Elsa saw them go.

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Not Adelbert
SpoilerElsabeth was more than a bit shaken to see Adelbert marched into the city as a prisoner, dressed in rags and protesting all the while. Though she knew he might well be caught, she had not fretted about it overmuch, assuming he would prove reasonable and cooperative like Sieghard, Ludo and Viggo had been.
She hurried out of the camp and headed first to the Serpent, then to the Chalice, to report to her friends: "Some of the Captain's men just came back with Adelbert and led him into the castle. He looked spitting mad... I don't know what was being said, but he looked like he was not about to help his case. When they came out, they locked him up in the army's jail."SpoilerRunning:

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Sieghard
SpoilerSieghard was leaving the Serpent when Elsa found him. From his expression when she said what had happened to Adelbert, it would've been reasonable to think he had misheard and thought the scribe had sprouted a tentacle.
"Shallya's merciful tits, do all of you Imperials feel the need to get yourselves thrown in a dungeon? Should I be worried that Viggo is going to do something dumb to get himself locked up next? He asked, burying his face in the palm of his hand and shaking his head in frustration.

Spoiler"Do you think this is because he snuck off instead of coming back with the rest of us?"
"Might have to do with it... or with how the fool wasn't cooperating at all," Elsa sighed, already forgetting how she herself had resisted (and later escaped) arrest, weeks ago. "I hope he's not making things worse for himself. I'd hate to have to defend his attitude, but we'll probably end up doing just that."SpoilerRunning:

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III
Not Adelbert
Spoiler
Viggo had just finished playing a tune, which had managed to get most of the inns patrons clapping along in time with the melody, when he noticed Sieghard and Elsa enter. They've probably been smooching again! He gave the pair an exaggerated wink and launched into a light romantic song about two star crossed lovers that was popular amongst the locals.
Once he'd finished, he crossed the room and listened with growing horror to Elsa's tale. His brow furrowed in anger, "It's all his bloody fault!" he shot an accusatory look and jabbing finger in Ludo's direction, "What are we going to do? We can't just leave him there to rot!"
Viggo scratched at his head, deep in thought. "We need to get a message to Adelbert, tell him what that litt... what Ludo.. told the Captaino and what we've agreed." He had to agree with Elsa, "If he carries on denying it or telling a different story, it's just going to make it worse for him isn't it? Do you think they'll let you talk to him Elsa?"

Re: [WFRP] The Bloody Crown III

SpoilerElsa sighed. "I can give it a try, but there's no easy way out for him. Either he keeps lying until he gets caught in his lie, or he comes around and has to confess he was lying the whole time. One way or another, Captain Sforza won't be happy. I just hope Adelbert doesn't drag us down with him," she said darkly.SpoilerRunning:

Free is the Magic Number
Spoiler
"First thing tomorrow, we speak to Sforza and beg clemency for Adelbert."
Viggo broke himself away from his consideration of the serving girl and rose an eyebrow in Elsa's direction, "Want me to come back up to the.. fortress with you?" He tilted his head in Sieghard's direction. "Or would you rather somebody else accompanied you?" He just managed to stop himself from sneaking in a knowing wink, but he was unable to contain a cheeky smirk. "Perhaps a romantic stroll through in the evening air..."

SpoilerHe tilted his head in Sieghard's direction. "Or would you rather somebody else accompanied you? Perhaps a romantic stroll through in the evening air..."
"Ugh, I'll go ask Abdul," she grumbled. "No use bothering the Captain about this. I'd rather go alone; we don't want them to think we're about to try something stupid in there."

SpoilerSorry for the delay. Can we fast-forward past the red tape? Elsa will tell Abdul (truthfully) that she wants to convince Adelbert to cooperate, but only if she can have a private conversation. If Abdul insists on accompanying her inside, she'll drop the matter and go to bed.

Elsa
SpoilerElsa found Abdul quite unprepared to see her. It seemed she'd disturbed him when he'd been about to go to bed, but if he was annoyed he gave no sign.
When she explained what she wanted, he nodded in a non-committal kind of way.
"It cannot hurt," he said. "Please, by all means go ahead. There is a guard on the door, but he will not stop you." He gave her a weary smile. "You are an officer, after all."

SpoilerElsa was alone. She came dressed in her heavy leather coat and boots, not her red dress and sandals. And she looked extremely annoyed; the orange tattoos on her face even appeared to be glowing slightly.
"The others are perfectly fine," she said, throwing Adelbert a hard stare. "They're at the Chalice, enjoying food and drink bought with their hard-earned gold.
