    So...

I'll be at a convention next week. There will be free food (mostly rice), there will be guest stars (whom I won't be paying attention to), there will be a menagerie of costumes (wonderous and frightening), there will be gaming, discussion and vast amounts of walking...

    ...and there will be Mafia.

Any good advice from anyone who's played this in real life? What's different, what's more effective, things to keep in mind? If, in a strange confluence of events I manage to win, I will personally credit everyone here for my victory.

Ah, in-person WW. I like it less due to it being less strategical. I also like it less due to pretty much always getting baner (out of 8 games that I can think of, I was baner 5 times and vanillager the other 3; one of those games didn't have baner) and turtling. Anyway, there is much less strategy, as players have a lot less information to work with. Generally, you aren't able to pressure each person during the day: you accuse one person, they say why they're not suspicious, and it's a vote to lynch or not lynch them; majority decides. Some rules go until one person is chosen to be lynched during the day. Others also have a maximum number of people up for lynch. The big difference here is that you don't have as much of a vote record: you only know how people feel about one, maybe a few people instead of who they're willing to see lynched over everyone else. Also with the vote record, you won't necessarily have perfect recall of who voted where...

Another big difference: body language and movement. During nighttime, if you're in a bad area, or if someone has clothes which make noise when they move, it's possible to figure out who's who from sounds when they make their action. You can also read a lot more with nervousness from body language than from posts on a forum, so try and take advantage of that. Of course, it always helps to know the people as well, though after a few games, you'll get a good idea.

General thoughts: pay attention to everyone and see what they react to and how. If something seems off, confront them on it, and determine from their answer whether you think they're town or not. Pay attention to votes, but unless something seems really off, it's not as important as on the forum, at least until you know who's a wolf, in which case it's great if you can remember who voted to lynch them and who they voted to lynch. I was in a blind game (no reveal on death), and I noticed that wolves are unlikely to vote for each other without good reason. Some of the game is gut feeling, but if you can figure out who's unwilling to lynch someone else, you'll go far. Even if it means you'll point at the seer (or masons, if the game has them) for not wanting to lynch someone, they should know that if they're up for death, they should claim and survive to be night-killed. Town are likely to sheep, and wolves are as likely to hammer town.

...and I'm rambling, but I hope it's helpful? I'm not hugely experienced, but I can say it's a very different type of game from forum games. Once you play a few games, you should start to get a feel of the people you're playing with, and experience with the variety of people playing here will definitely help. There will be less talking, and it will be faster paced, so be prepared for that. I trust you at least understand how day/night phases work in irl games?

The nurse always, always banes themselves. Chances are, they will never be attacked.
The sheriff is occasionally someone who starts talking during their scry. Be cautious.

Avoid changing what you're doing. If you're assertive, stay assertive. If you're passive, stay passive. And I would suggest being assertive. Partly because it's hilarious when you're Mafia and convince everyone else to kill someone who is not. And being passive is boring.

If you are Mafia, kill whoever talks most. Passive people will take care of themselves. In fact, your targets should be similar if you are the Baner or the Seer.

If you're the narrator, it's difficult to stay impartial.

Also: Your claims will not save you.

So, I was going to disappear from the forums earlier this year, but rescinded it later. Well upon review, I really do want to take a break. My play has been lacklustre at best, and my care has been up and down depending on the moment, stymieing any attempt to be a really effective player no matter what side I'm on. I will continue in the games I'm in, and since there are people struggling with numbers, I'll stay signed up to the games I'm already signed up for.

I'll admit right away that one of the reasons I stayed was because Pizza showed up and he really impressed me. I wanted to ... show off I guess. Wanted to re-establish myself as one of the scariest players on Gitp. But my flagging confidence and on and off attention span has left me rather less than impressive compared to how I wanted to be seen.

So, yeah, I'll be around for a while longer, but as soon as I have died, I'll probably be out until the end of the year.

Makes me a sad panda, but I understand your reasons. If you let enough WW games pass you by, or get jaded by them, dipping out to recharge your batteries is a good call.

Small plea here; I ideally need another 17(!) players for World of Darkness II - Asylum WW which I know is a big ask. I could just about run with 25, so I'd at least like to get to that. Knowledge of WoD is not required, but some appreciation of modern horror might help.

This is unfortunately true. I keep trying to think of ways we can attract more players (while allowing those who want to take a break to do so of course - I understand that, it's why I disappeared for about 2 years).

    On a related note...

    **Attention All Werewolf Players**

The following games are still in need of players:

Schoolhouse Werewolf - 15/?? (due to start tomorrow, so this is last minute)
Do It Yourself WW - 14/20 (due to start when it gets 20 players)
World of Darkness WW II - 18/35
    Deserted Island WW - 9/20
Castle WW - 5/30 (due to start 7th July, depending of signups)
    L-Space WW 2 - 3/?? (due to start 14th July)

I know most people can't manage to play every game that comes along, but take a look is you can. Tell your friends. Help all the poor player-deficient narrators out.

I must second this. I limit myself to 3 active games at once so I don't get overwhelmed. If the games were spread out in time I'd be more than happy to join them.

This used to be a problem on another site I play on alot until we limited the amount of active games going at any one time to 3. This allows people who can play in alot of games to be able to keep track/pay attention to them while not over-stressing the ones who can only play in one game at a time. To do this we just had a narrator que where someone who wants to host a game signs up and then waits there turn. When they come up they start signups and when its full the go.

Over there we also split them between Basic and Advanced games depending on the types/number of roles involved in the game, but I dont think you guys should need that here. You seem to have a pretty static set of roles so no need for the different categories.

Another thing ive noticed is its difficult, atleast for me, to notice which games are still in signups and which have just started. Im sure ill get better at noticing that, but where im from we have a separate thread for a game labeled SIGNUPS for [blank] and then start a new thread for the actual game itself. It helps us keep track.

The closest we have to that is a schedule. One game with over 20 players can start each week, and 2 with less. That way, we don't have two giant games starting the same week.

There are about 74 players forming the current base of profiles. This is diluted a bit by a few one offs, roughly 10%, whose participation in future games is not particularly assured.

Of the various still active and recruiting games, the percentage of the active player based is engaged as follows:

    26%
    10%
    5%
    60%
    22%
    40%
    20%
    18%
    6%
    18%

This ignores the few other non mafia games, which are much smaller, as well as the tournament, which has too much turn over to compared as simply. As most of the player base is not participating in more than a half dozen, fragmentation is pretty inevitable, especially as the rate of game completion is less than creation. For an established outlier to this, Typical is very near to completion, but it's been going since March.
