    Default The CHALLENGE chugs on!

    Continuing
    The incredible!
    The fantastic!
    The glorious...
    THE CHALLENGE!

If you haven't joined yet, now's your chance!

After filling out our first thread, we are still going strong - better, stronger, and more motivated than ever!

    The rules are simple:
    • Each week, starting the week after you accept the CHALLENGE, you are to upload six creative works done by yourself. Sunday is the deadline.
    • Every week you meet the CHALLENGE, you'll get a week counter. If you fail to meet the CHALLENGE, your counter will reset. At certain intervals, you earn prizes (see the FAQ).
    • For inspiration, every week a participant picks a theme. Feel free to use the theme in your works, but it's not mandatory.
    • Anyone is free to enter the CHALLENGE, and it continues for as long as there are participants.

Many thanks to Rockbird for starting the CHALLENGE concept! We hope many more will join!

    Show

Where can I upload my works?
Anywhere goes, really. DeviantArt, a thread here on gitp, Photobucket, PM the finished works to me, or anything else you'd like. The only requirement is that I must be able to find it, so please keep your contributions in one spot, or throw me a PM with links if you need to scatter it.

    What is a "creative work"?
The creative work may be drawing, sculpting, writing, anything creative. It needs to be an actual work (no doodles or unfinished pieces), but there are different requirements for different types of works.
If in doubt, ask. We can usually work something out.

    Drawings
The rule of thumb is that one drawing equals one piece. But any work with multiple pieces fit to stand on their own can be counted as multiple submissions. A couple of examples:
Two non-descript generic people playing chess, no background = 1.
Two distinct characters playing chess, no background = 1 each.
-//- playing in a cafeteria = as above +1 for the scene
-//- with a detailed mall/cityscape/other elaborate setting = characters +1 for immediate surroundings +1 for the larger backdrop. Possibly another +1 if there's a notable event or scene in the background.

    Writing
For writing, a piece is defined as 250 words. This can stack, so it need not be finished works (a full week would be 1500 words). Please include a word count anytime you submit writing.

A poem (any length) counts as one. Same does a comic script.

    Films
For shortfilms and the like, 30 seconds count as a piece. This can also stack.

    Figurines
One figurine counts as one piece.

What is the deal with the themes?
Every week, there's a theme chosen by a CHALLENGE participant. We go through the participant list one by one, and you're are free to pick anything.
A good theme is specific enough to matter, but vague enough to be interpreted in different ways.

The themes are not mandatory, but it's always fun to see how different people use different themes. In the status update, I will give special mention to whichever pieces followed the themes.

What if I'm prevented from uploading?
If you know in advance that you won't be able to upload, just let me know. You must give a return date which becomes your deadline for upload of the intervening pieces. That will not affect your streak at all. If you find yourself unable to give advance notice (due to e.g. a power outage), fair enough, life happens. You get three such "freebies" a year.

    What can I win?
    • For every 10th consecutive week where you both pass and follow the theme, Glass Mouse will draw you a portrait (in the style of her comic).

The list is kinda short right now. If you have a prize you want to offer, speak up.

    Ooh, new thread smell!

    Submission for this week:

    Spoiler: A crumbling complex, a broadsword, and a watchtower - 1864 words
    Show
She hadn't been in here in months. Years. The last she remembered of the sprawling complex was the shadows seeping over into the main hall as she had watched, wide-eyed in fear and fascination, from over her mother's shoulder as they and everyone else fled. And then it had happened over and over again, that same tireless cycle, until there was little left.

But it didn't matter. All she needed to keep in mind was her mission. The derelict center--had it once had "security" attached to its name? it had provided anything but--supposedly held some of the last relics of the bygone age. She had always found it strange that what they now called "relics" were more powerful than anything nowadays. Perhaps she could even replace the handgun she had at her side, so worn-out that she had only brought it along as a back-up. Well, she'd find out. Nervously tugging on the strap around her torso that held her trusty broadsword in place, she approached the boundaries.

A single crumbling watchtower gazed wearily over the long-rusted metal. The wind sifted through the tall grass that had taken over the first courtyard, and vines of some sort had enmeshed themselves with the multitudes of cables and wires that now connecting nothing to nothing.

It was quiet. Some would call it peaceful. Perhaps that was well. But perhaps it was just..well, the calm before the storm. She'd be as wary as ever.

The gates posed no problem, the hinges and bars and wires having weakened or long ago disappeared, leaving the also-disintegrating posts parading mournfully across, unable to keep anything secure. She briefly pondered climbing up the watchtower to scope out the area. The more prepared she was, the better. The ladder didn't look quite so good, though. Lifting a booted foot, she gingerly tests the first rung.

Well. That was good. The rungs might look horrible, but underneath they were still solid. Gripping the roughened reddish-brown bars, she pulled herself up. The room at the top was small, as it only needed to support one--or maybe two, she supposed--at a time, plus any controls they once might have needed. Almost at the top, she listens again, just to be safe...

Silence again. She didn't know if that was good or bad. Perhaps the complex really was empty, like they had said. As she enters the small room through the side door, she notices something on the floor...

Strange. Perhaps they had kept a small fire-starter kit in here for emergencies. It was a way out from any civilization. Or at least now it was. She wasn't sure about Then. The flint and steel might come in handy. Reaching down a gloved hand, she secured them in one of her belt-pouches.

The room, as she had expected, was decrepit. The consoles were patched with holes and the occasional web, and a small plant was even sprouting from one of the old consoles. Even with these signs of life, though, the tell-tale inky-black patches were still there, a reminder of those dreaded days. And a reminder to her to careful still. The windows were long gone, the smooth shards in piles on the floor. The landscape outside was almost surreal, like she had had pictures, or projections, or something, on the walls of the chamber. Pictures was an almost haunting beauty. But she had to be careful. Leaning out slightly, she scanned the area, or what she could see of it...

Suddenly, a flicker. A blur. An empty hole in the light. The complex wasn't empty. Even though she had been trained all her life against these...things, and had even witnesses them first hand, they were still disconcerting. The winds seemed ever so much more chill now, and she shivered. But that was just the cold. She had packed warmer gear. In case. It was just the cold. The cold, and nothing more.

Judging from the sun, she had a few more hours before dark. She wasn't sure if she really wanted to spend a night and that complex. Actually, she didn't want to spend a night anywhere near here at all. But if ever, the tower was her best bet. If she started now, she'd be able to get it relatively hospitable before sunset.

After an hour of sewing, tying, hooking, and crimping, and another of foraging in the grounds below--outside the complex, of course--she'd manage to cover the windows somewhat securely. After some scraping and coaxing, the mechanism to lift the ladder had groaned to life, and she had been able to crank the rungs up. She was prepared. Or she hoped she was.

Spreading out her survival blanket on the floor, she sat and leaned against the wall, unfolding her second one to cover her. She had left one of the windows uncovered, the small west one. Her instructors and guides and partners had always told her she was too dreamy. The world was a harsh and unforgiving place, and the things she might find out in the abandoned places even more so. But there was always a beauty in it too that she saw.

The blue faded to pink, then orange, then to a vividly deep blue again, as the white-hot hole of the sun sank below. Had people sat and watched the sun set, free of fears, so many years ago? Had they stayed until the blue deepened to black, and counted the spray of stars above them? Nostalgia. That was it, that was also what they had called her. Nostalgic. She preferred to think of it as ghosts, old memories that didn't leave, but just lingered on, touching all those around.

But she needed to focuse now. Cover the window. Secure the ladder in place. Close the door and cover that. Lantern, two of them to be sure. After she had checked that everything was secured thrice over, she finally lay down on her makeshift bed. After a short time, she pulled her rough blanket over her head. She didn't want to be staring at the scars the place bore.

She wasn't sure how much later it was, but everything outside was dark. She jerked upright. There...had been a sound. Something moving. Below? Her heart raced. She was safe. In this trap. No, she was safe. Everything was sealed. She had light. Maybe it was just an animal, a deer, or maybe a coyote. Hand on her gun, she listened carefully, fearfully. Nothing. The wind now, but nothing else. Just...a deer. Or maybe some crumbling metal, held only by a thin pivot of frost-thin rust, had finally fallen. Yes. That was it. That was all. Nothing more. Nothing to fear. Nothing, nothing at all.

If she hadn't been so tired, she would never have gone back to sleep. As it was, it took her some time before she could drift off again, listening to the wind and the reluctant silence of the night. Her dreams were dark and deep and spotted with ink.

She slept through the rest of the night without wakening again. It was the sun filtering though that woke her. The fears of the night were past, and as she packed her supplies and re-opened the western window, she felt strangely confident. Optimistic. Cheerful, almost. She'd be in and out by late noon, and be quite a distance away before nightfall. At worst, she could spend the night here in the watchtower again, and if anything bothered her, she'd have the Relics. She didn't dare to hum--it felt wrong to shatter the silence--but a melody was running through her head. The song was a sad one, about ghosts and maybe the sea, that a wanderer had taught her five or six years ago when both of them were waiting out a storm. She couldn't remember all of it, exactly, but it was like the world before in that way. And somehow it comforted her.

Securing her pack, she climbed down. As her feet touched the ground, she noticed something strange. A shotgun, lying not a few feet away. What in the world...? Her mind lept back to the sound in the night. Well...another weapon was always useful. Though she wasn't quite sure whether this is more helpful than just unsettling.

The courtyard was long overgrown, with golden stalks rippling in the breeze and vines twining themselves over their previous generations and the walls. She approached the massive doors at the front of the building. They had once operated on some electric system, but any source was probably long since gone. Any sources near the outside, at any rate. The security system was designed slightly strangely that way, she supposed. These were only the outer defenses, though.

She gingerly tested the doors. Still firmly sealed. The building didn't have any windows--or any accessible ones, at any rate--and the doors slid open and close, so there weren't any hinges to bash. Maybe she could try the center were they joined, though. That would have the unfortunate side effect of alerting any...thing in the complex to her presence, though she had the feeling that they would already know anyway. Well, she couldn't go back without at least trying.

Drawing her broadsword, she calms at the familar heft. Gripping it with both hands, she steps back, planting her feet in a firm stance. Then she lunges, swinging the heavy blade.

A resounding crash. But the doors still held firm. She was about to step back and try again when she heard...something. Almost like a slight shifting, a rustling of leaves. Slightly unnerved, she gripped her broadsword tighter. She'd have to face whatever was in there. Once she got the door open, that is.

She retreated and brought the blade down again. Another crash, metal against metal.

With a torturous splintering sound, something between the two doors gave way, to her disappointment. The doors themselves are forced slightly apart, the crooked gap between them letting a slice of light into the dusty interior. After listening a few moments and ascertaining that nothing with immediately inside, she pushed her broadsword into the ground and set her gloved hands against the doors. The doors, with much groaning and protests, slowly grind open, until the gap between them is wide enough to enter.

Taking her broadsword in hand, she secures its weapon cord to her forearm-guard, and slips inside into the unknown. No time for doubt now.

The room she entered had once been a lobby of sorts. Decrepit frames of metal with strands of foam and fabric hanging off of them, probably once couches or chairs, lined the walls or lay strewn about on the floor. A desk is immediately opposite her, with a door behind it. Another set of doors is at the far end of the lobby. What had once been some kind of houseplant was now a twisted wooden stub in a ceramic pot, miraculously still untouched.

In the middle of the lobby, a scraggly plant is struggling to survive in a thin thread of light. The tiny leaves somehow made everything less...desolate. Less sad. A spot of green. A spot of hope.

    Shiny new thread!

Also, due to the changes in the offered prizes, I decided to offer prizes on my own. So, for every 7th consecutive week passed, I will paint an watercolour painting (worth up to 3 pieces, so e.g. 2 characters + background) of your choice. For every 21st week, I will mail you the three original paintings (if you're willing to give me your address.)
You can call me Juniper. Please use gender-neutral pronouns (ze/hir (preferred) or they/them) when referring to me.

Here are my submissions for the week:
    Spoiler: A Very Old Child
    Show
A character from an upcoming adventure in the D&D game I'm running. She's going to offer the PCs a difficult choice.

    Spoiler: Pointer v. Ringo
    Show
Yeah... I'm not saying I've got the most unusual duel... But I think I might have the most unusual duel.

    Spoiler: That Which You Were
    Show
Just a little idea I had.

    Spoiler: Aragorn as Strider
    Show
Lord of the Rings fan art. The Tengwar at the top says Elessar which means Elfstone, and is one of Aragorn's many names.

    Spoiler: The Witchfinder General
    Show
This is my second unusual duel. It's the witchhunter Matthew Hopkins, also known as the Witchfinder General. Here I portrayed him as a traitor witch, duelling another witch.

    Spoiler: OOTS Fanart
    Show
Just Vaarsuvius and Inkyrius, sitting by a pond in the woods all peaceful and not terrifying. Partially influenced by Lycunadari's paintings, which I've looked through on DA and the LGBTitp Arts and Crafts page.

    Spoiler: An Origami Dragon
    Show
Another original origami design of mine. Mostly the same as the crane, with a few modifications.

Also, I'd be willing to do a prize, starting towards the end of May. I'd do up to three index cards (since they don't usually take more than half an hour apiece) in either pen or inkwashing (link to examples) of a subject of their choosing (within my ability, the more specific the request the better) for every five weeks of participation. And since they're index cards, they'd be about as cheap as it gets to mail, even internationally, so anybody who wanted the originals could have 'em.

Not a (comparatively) very prolific week for me. I got two stories:

Spoiler: Sal Miller, on frozen planet Asimov VII (1126 words)
    Show

Spoiler: Two robots try to pass off as human (1544 words)
    Show
    Link
I'm actually a bit disappointed in this one. I think the idea had more potential. I might rewrite it at some point.

Apologies for the delay in my entrance to the new thread, this is my first free moment since the weekend. Unfortunately I've come up a bit short this week, with only 937 words, but I still intend to share.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0f...it?usp=sharing

The analysis is incomplete, which should surprise no one. It will be necessary to complete at some point for my own understanding, which should also surprise no one. I would say in fact that the only thing that would surprise someone is if it managed to occur this time around, though I'd welcome the surprise if it did.

I'm still pondering a theme. Soon as something sparks, I'll bring it by.

And since they're index cards, they'd be about as cheap as it gets to mail, even internationally, so anybody who wanted the originals could have 'em.
You guys rock! I’m adding your prize offerings to the FAQ now

I’ll try to keep an eye out for you and let people know when they earn a prize, but I’ll probably forget, so… That part’s on you

Firstly, there are no skies. The grey winds move relentlessly across the vast plains, the aether stretching out above into an unending nothingness. They say that once the stars began fading out, the skies did the same. They don't say how long ago that was. Perhaps no one really knows. Or maybe we never had a sky to begin with. The dull, vaguely luminescent space above us is surely not a sky. When we were young, we poured over collections of old myths, eagerly devouring descriptions of those wondrous blue skies, and trying to make do by saying the space above us was really a sky, just a certain type of sky. But skies change, don't they? Ours is monotonous and blank. As we grew older, we started shedding those dreams to die in the hidden corners of our minds. We did not have a sky. We couldn't change that. We had much more with which to occupy our mind than some far-distant fairy-tale. And the wind blew, and the rain fell—was it really rain that fell? from where did it fall?--and so we grew older, and lived and laughed and cried and sang and loved and died. And then we were again, another world of hopeful minds. And the skies were gone. And perhaps we cried over that a little, and then we grew. The old stories did not matter. We had no sky, but that was our world. We had our lives. That was enough. But maybe one day, we would see the skies again.

    * * *

The stars. But it wasn't the stars, really. It was the ones beyond them. Beyond. Somehow. In that uncomprehensibile, unimaginably distant tapestry of darkness. That beautifully woven tapestry. They were the ones who had woven it, she knew. They had woven the world. Before time. Before space. Before everything else. They were rightly called the Elder Ones. They were Before. Beyond. Transcending mortal thought. Most mortals, anyway. The ones who didn't see Them. The ones who didn't see the beauty of the night. The ones who gave her those strange looks. The ones who could never understand why she followed Them. The ones who called Them abominations. Aberrations. If those people meant unutterably powerful, then she supposed they were right. But that was never what they meant.

The stars. She wondered how They had woven them. Small essences of--of what, exactly? Pieces of time, maybe. Extensions of Them, maybe. They had no need for time. Like They had no need for form. Their vastness was beyond space. And They were teaching her. Maybe one day she could fully, truly see the Tapestry. But for now she had to be content with the strands and threads and slivers that They uncovered for her. There was more. So much more. And she was learning. Learning. The stars, the Ones Beyond, They would teach her. Why were others so afraid?

The stars. Leaning back, she inhaled the deep scents of the dark. The stars shone above her. Whispering. Teaching. She would listen. She would be Theirs. She would be of the stars.

    * * *

Well, so I suppose you once heard the tales about this place. You were young, probably eight or nine, eager, and delusional. As the years grew on you, so did that lingering promise of fame and fortune. And then you left, trying to come here. Delusional. Yes. Yes you were. So were all the ones who came before you. And all the ones who'll come after, I'll wager.

Go on, draw your sword. They all did that too. Grasping at what little threads of misled hope they had. Or maybe it was a bow. Or an axe. It didn't matter. You've got a sword now, then. What, exactly, do you actually think your're going to accomplish? Overconfidence killed more than curiosity. Though maybe it's more desperation than that. All of you. Grasping at straws.

Why? Why do you feel the need to do this? What is so important about treasure and fame? Are you all so foolish?

Almost, there. Unfortunately for you, just almost. Not good enough. Like you probably thought of yourself. Were you one of those poor fools out to "prove themselves?" Quite frankly, it's hard to prove your worth when you're dead. Unless that was your worth. Well, there goes your torch.

Ah. The darkness. Why does everyone say the dark is evil? It's not. If you all knew that, you wouldn't be so hell-bent on detstroying it. Or at least, it's not any more evil than the day. You say it's because the monsters roam the night? How interesting. What, exactly, are these "monsters" you speak of? Killers, stalkers, destroyers, cheaters, the blindly furious ones? Strange. I seem to know of many day-dwellers--supposed light-bringers--who would fit this. Many of your kind. Who are the *real* monsters? Don't swing like that. Blindly. Furiously.

And all your monsters, they fight to simply because they have no other choice. You spread tales and stories and fears of rampaging and villages burned to the ground. But what do you yourselves do? You burn *their* towns, drive out their people, kill their brothers and sisters and husbands and wives and young ones, all for some phantom feud that you yourselves started. What was that you called it? Justice?

The quality of this sword is pathetic. Look at how it bends. Justice. Perhaps you'd like some of your own...

Firstly, about the prize I promised: I will, to provide a clear start point, begin that in June. It would appear that the first ones lined up for that are Rysc and Lycunadari, on the week of June 2nd to 8th, so that's effectively when I'll start.

Now, my submissions for the week. There are a lot of big pictures, so I'll just link to them. I may start doing so in general.

I'm falling short this week... Boo to me. I only wrote one piece, The Sentience, which isn't really good to begin with and only 858 words long, barely over half what I should have written. Starting at week one next week it would seem!

I was hoping to have my written materials from the week typed up in time, but...honestly, I fell asleep mid-transcription. Spirit is willing, flesh is weak and all that. Night shift is a hell of a thing.

Still, every week is a new streak opportunity. And may I say, with my most recent topics of discussion, I've got this week's theme in spades.

Since I began the transcription this morning, a bit too late anyway, and expanded and reformatted it thoroughly from the handwritten notes, I think it's fair to count it towards this week's work. And by that count I've gotten 1188 words down, and have a clear direction for the rest - just as soon as I get a bit more sleep. Stay tuned.

I'm sorry that I disappeared without a word, was busy getting a new job. Not that I wouldn't have had enough time to tell you, but I kept promising myself that I would produce something the next day. I won't be able to work on stuff on a regular basis for the next time, so I'll have to withdraw from the CHALLENGE, hopefully only for a hiatus.

    I worked in the theme!

    ...Accidentally.

    Also, hey all o/

I tried to enter the challenge a few months back but definitely didn't have the commitment necessary to complete The Challenge. However, I've grown up a bit since then and believe I'm ready to take it now.

I'm also going to put the offer up for every ten weeks in a row, starting this week, to do an honest(If not edging toward overly blunt) critique of a weeks worth of submissions for writing. I will probably decrease the amount of weeks required after the first ten week span to something lower, once I learn to balance writing and school/work better then I do right now. If you don't have a writing, I can attempt to do a general impression of a work, given that I most likely won't have expertise in your art form. I'm a firm believer in communal critiquing so this is my way to contribute in that regard.

A little bit late, where I am, at least. But I don't think fifteen minutes probably matter, eh? Especially since they were all done already, I just had some issues with the internet briefly.

    Firstly, an index card piece:

    Secondly, a tisane:
Violet and Nettle Tea; It's Aquamarine!
Me, in a Demon Mask and black cloak:

    An old Mask, repainted:
    Odin Mask
    A Character of Mine:

I would like to remind those watching at home that working night shift and a terrible propensity to pass out at one's laptop are less conducive to late-night editing than they may appear. Nevertheless I'm going to hope I got up early enough to skiiiiiiirt in here. If not, well, week in advance and no harm.

Neither of these documents is per se a finished product, but each has solidified more than enough for me to make them worthwhile. And I still feel a little disappointed that I'm largely riding on the previous document, but the latter certainly has room to grow.

So without further ado, a total of 1663 words. Here's the first 1188:

I went to the Maker Faire in San Francisco and built a few things and learned to crochet and needlework. I don't have pictures right now though, and a lot of the projects are really not worth counting as one (like, a duct tape bracelet).

So I probably failed again :S Tonight I'll take pics and upload them anyways, and today I'm using my newly taught needlework to make a little robot :) That should definitely count for this week, at least.
