Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Fair enough. I would still say that these pacts can be extended from fey to non-fey, considering the whole mythology on "Do not do deals with the fey." thing.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Oh, definitely. I'm thinking a kind of mutual minor geas thing, where each party agrees to the terms and is bound to follow them. Say, a will save is needed to act against the agreement. Then add in a clause about how it affects fey differently. Like, it's harder for them to act against the agreement, but if you break an agreement made with a fey, the punishment is more severe.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Consequences of breaking a geas:
1) The fey know you are an geas-breaker on sight, and thus any diplomacy checks you and anyone directly associated with you do with one of the fey increase. If an geas-breaker gets into a fight with a fey or a party with a fey in it, the fey will attack the geas-breaker first, unless necessity forces it to re prioritize. The flip side is that one who has a reputation for fulfilling geasa among the fey is respected, and any fey will be reluctant to fight you unless, by their eyes, you give them no choice.
2) If you end up under another geas, the Will save increases in difficulty.
3) The is a way to atone for breaking an geas, which is specific to the case.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
My two cents would be that, if a member of the little folk would really want for a agreement to be magically bound (which would only be in big deals with outsiders or interactions with more socially conservative/powerful individuals), they would actually get Cha'risa Greathorn, level 5 government-employed Shaman up out of bed, so she can summon up the right spirit to say the magic words and make the geas.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Fair enough. I think a spell with a little extra oomph when applied to fey would be suitable. We could throw it on as an SLA in some places, or add it to casting lists as appropriate.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Personally, I think that it wouldn't hurt to add that the fey have lost a lot of the power they once held, since the Little Folk currently are not the same tier as the Sidhe of legends. It also allows us to draw inspiration from the older stories without having to try and explain why there is such a contrast between the powers of the fey then and now.
A cool idea: The Fey religion is ancestor worship, as they worship the fey of old (Morrigan, Lugh, Erin, Gwyn ap Nudd, etc.)

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Hmmmm... What if we go beyond that a bit?
If we do something like the soul-pool thing I mentioned earlier, it's possible it's not quite ancestor worship. If these ancient, legendary few were powerful enough, 'large' enough in the spiritual sense, it's possible that their passing into the pool would have significantly changed the nature of the pool. Like dumping a cup of blue dye into a bathtub. It wouldn't be a strong influence, but it would be notable. In this way, all fey that formed after their passing actually inherited a fraction of these powerful fey's souls, a little something of their powerful ancestors.
Of course, it's possible that the powerful fey were banished from the mortal world, but, being immortal, are still around on the spirit world, holding court in a land far removed from mortals. they're not outsiders, so they don't feel the influence of mortal minds, leaving them unchanging and eternal amid the shifting realm of the spirit world. My Homebrew

Good point. I do not know how much kicking around we should have them do, unless they are all sitting in Underhill (in the barrows that are home to the Fey) and cannot/ will not leave.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
You know, considering how important the Merlinic wizards, perhaps we could do something interesting with Morgan Le Fay in the Little Folk nation.
Also, we need a name for that nation.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
"Second Home" should work with the name varying based on the language of the fey (Irish = Gaeilge, Wales = Welsh, Scottish = Gaelic)
Irish = Dara Baile (Second Home)
Welsh = Ail Hafan (Second Home)
Scottish = Dachaigh-ùr (New Home)
Scots = New Hame (New home)
Before these become official, I would advise double checking the translations, as the above were done with Translation software.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Hmm. I don't know, a brief google-fueled refresher seems to indicate Morgan was just a spellcaster of some sort, not actually fey.
Besides, with the nation so far west of England, I think it should have very little European influence. I'm sure we can find powerful new-world fey. Granny Squanit comes to mind, but I'm not actually sure if she's little or just mentioned alongside little folk. Forever Boy, a human child who was turned into a little folk with the blessing of the creator, could be a good one. If we can't find one, we could create a leader.
I do like the possible names put forth. I think if memory serves, I was bastardizing a couple of gaelic sources together to make words for Fae. Maybe rather than 'second' or 'new', though, what about 'true home'? Sort of implying that they never really had a home before, that anywhere they had to live in hiding wasn't really a home.My Homebrew

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
If your having the Gaelic Wee Folk over here, I think they would still think of the British Isle as their true home. They may have lived in Barrows, but they and their people have lived in the British Isles since the late Stone Age-Early Bronze (if we consider the coming of the Gaels in the Iron age to be the source of the myths that the Fae were allergic to iron.). The European Fae have not have time to really consider the New World as their true home, only as their current one.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
The idea was more that Gaelic had a root that was influenced by the Fae tongue, not that Fae descended from Gaelic.
Just because that's the name, and the view of the little folk who founded the nation, doesn't necessarily mean that it's the view of all the little folk who reside there. Yeah, some might argue their true homelands were elsewhere, and many would still reside in their native lands, but the nation is founded on the idea of a sanctuary where the little folk can live free outside the shadow of human influence.
Also, I suppose how long it would take them to regard the land as their true home also depends on an important question: Do little folk age? Are they immortal? Do they age extremely slowly, or just like people? My Homebrew

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Well if they have a 'home is where the heart is'-mentallity it doesn't matter how long they've been there, they'll regard the place as theirs.
If we want to keep the Little Folk close to the myths they're based on they're going to need a longer lifespan than humans. At least something close to a few centuries.
Maybe it depends on how powerfull every fey is? Normal fey have a lifespan of say 380-420 years, but more powerfull fey (read: the ones with class levels) can extend that lifespan by drawing power from the soul-pool. The really powerfull ones, the ones that become famous and revered, can eventually draw enough power from the soul-pool to ascend to the Spiritworld to become outsiders.
Perhaps if they are still revered on the mortal world they can get enough power to become gods? Or we take it a step further and say that the Little Folk are the larval form of all the gods that have ever existed?

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
I like the middle ground with the Old Powers of the Fae being Outsiders with their own courts. It would provide a good campaign to end up deep in the Fae lands in the spirit realm. Perhaps the soul pool acts like the concept of Nirvana, except that the Fae instead gradually ascend to join one of the Immortal Courts?

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Well, wiki-wandering hasn't left me with any clues toward a historical life-span for little folk, but I do think they probably would have a relatively long lifespan as they are credited with great wisdom and skill.
Still, there are issues with just saying they're immortal or very-long-lived, the same reasons that are brought up every time elves show up being 100s of years old and on equal footing with human teenagers. There should be some sort of mechanical tie-in relating to age if they're all that old, like I did with the huli jing. Maybe the 'base' little folk is <100 years old, and at each 100 year birthday they gain a level in a sort of racial paragon class thing that increases their wisdom, maybe improves their racial SLAs, and might even stack with spellcasting levels.Last edited by Admiral Squish; 2015-03-21 at 04:28 PM.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
I'd have them reach 'adulthood' in their mid-thirties, after which they simply grow old very slowly, with a top age of about 200+ years. Of course, that's the average individual, and one magically trained or especially in-tune with the world might live far longer. I'd expect that any over two-hundred would be little walking beards, though.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Oddly enough, there is some significant evidence of bearded little folk. They're frequently referred to as hairy-faced, which could easily be taken to mean they grow/wear beards. Also, some myths say granny squanit grew out her hair to the point that she looks like a haystack.
Still, I don't know about a maximum age. I suppose this ties into fey as a whole, really. Are fey mortal? A lot of them seem to be referenced as immortal or ageless. But a lot of little folk are said to look just like humans, too, so having old folks would make sense. But they also seem to have a sort of 'eternal youth' going on in some myths. Would it vary from fey to fey?My Homebrew

Perhaps it's more that they look old, but they do not have the age penalties? As for dealing with the problems with immortality, I thought that is what the reincarnation was supposed to do?

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
I'd guess that there are some fey that almost always resemble elderly humanoids, like, say, redcaps or most forms of hags. I'd imagine that many 'mainline' little folk have the same thing going on, with some associated with wisdom and helping idiot humans in finding things always rocking the 'tiny old sage' look, while traditional europian dwarves almost always looking old but having a great big pecking order among themselves regarding age.
I would say that the fey are effectively immortal, but because they're fey , what could cause them harm are all really subjective and would need to be broken down on a case-by-case basis, because they're like that. Some might have youthful periods of hundreds and hundreds of years, before settling into a stately middle-age, while others age like humans but never die of age. If there's one thing the fey are, it's not orderly. Why would their aging be any more defined and understandable then their magic or their personalities?

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
You raise good points.
I could certainly imagine the appearance of age actually being largely independent of actual age, and varying widely from one type of little folk to the other. Some appear eternally children, others are bearded and old as soon as they can walk.
And I could imagine the rules of aging and growth varying from fey to fey, too. Some are immortal, others are short-lived like flowers, some grow from seeds, others are born, or hatch from eggs.My Homebrew

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
So why not bump up the chaos a bit more and remove the ageing effects for the Fey. They don't get the -1 str/dex/con and +1 int/wis/cha when they age.
Maybe to replace that they take 1 trait and 1 flaw when they advance an age category? Or a flaw and some skillpoints? It would make them even more interesting to play.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Hmm. I don't know, I don't think PF has traits and flaws as they did in 3.5.
I do think I will be making them 'ageless' in that they never change age categories. No penalties or bonuses.
I still like the idea I had of a repeatable one-level dip to represent advancing age and power. You get skill points, hit points, maybe an increase to wisdom, and probably advanced spellcasting/spell-like abilities. My Homebrew

Skype Call!
Oh, hey, I just realized, It's the last weekend of the month, which means that next weekend is the first of the month, which means another skype call! I gotta say, I really love how productive these calls are.
Anyways, It's the usual day/time (Saturday the 4th at 3 PM, EST) and I'mma have to be firm on this one. I can't move it any later 'cause I'm gonna be running around Saturday night and all Sunday, cooking and getting ready for an Easter dinner party thing.
If you want to take part, just message me here or on skype to let me know you're in, and if you're new and want to get in on the calls, just PM me with your contact info and I'll add you to the list.My Homebrew

It's end of semester for me, so I won't be able to attend this month's call.
I really need to find a local museum on Native history that talks about Inuit history as well. There is no other way I can finish the Arctic Over-culture otherwise. At least, not to my satisfaction.

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Unfortunate, but understandable. I'll be sure to post up the cool stuff we talk about for everyone who misses it.
I wish you luck, it doesn't seem like native american/first nations stuff gets a lot of floor space in most museums. Still, who knows, you might get lucky. Or maybe there's a virtual tour or something at some more distant locale you could check out?
I really like what you've done so far with the arctic culture, I'm entirely confident you'll finish it off quite nicely.
I'm thinking about how to make the crossroads world more easily approachable to newcomers, two massive threads can be a little intimidating. I'm coming back to the idea of a wiki recently. Only problem is, I don't really have the time to write up everything. If I were to make a wiki, do you guys think you'd be willing to pitch in to help fill it out?My Homebrew

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Well a wiki could have any finished product copied directly over, which would cut down on writing time (if you can directly copy and paste the text, then alter the formatting as needed). It would also help with planning out things that need to be fleshed out.
I might be able to help out after this semester, as I will likely have a lot of free time this summer. Is there a cost to be expected though?

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
Well, the biggest challenge of the wiki is mostly going through the threads and gathering up the details we've decided on for each subject and putting them together in a semi-coherent fashion. The wiki would be more about the world and the fluff than the mechanical stuff, but we could put mechanical stuff there too. Basically, we're trying to make something that would make it easier to find information about the setting than sifting through two rather long, wordy threads.
I don't think there's a cost, I think it's free to make, they just make money with ads and stuff. My Homebrew

Re: Crossroads II: I'm on a Mammoth.
I'm available on saturday. One question: did you Americans switch to summer time this weekend or isn't that a thing on the other side of the pond? We went one hour forward last sunday.
Anyway, a wiki sounds very usefull and i could probably find some time to help you dig through the old thread to fill it all out.
