Names withheld for privacy, but there was a game where a mafioso decided to claim that he was a traitor to the mafia, and named all of them, in an attempt to confuse the village.

Not only was he lynched, but so was the rest of his team.

The team managed to recruit one person before they got obliterated, and that someone was me.

For example, they then allowed the newly-minted Don Pizzaguy to personally kill off their trusty townie Mayor with his even more trusty fireman's axe, then they voted him in as the new Mayor, granting him access to their network's most heavily guarded secrets, watched him wipe out the opposing gang, and then saw him crush the town as well.

Ordinarily in a closed setup I wouldn't comment, however, I've also taken the step of detailing everything that is reliable in the game, and what is not. Consequently, this falls under that particular domain.

The effect of one's power (if it has any actual effect) will be spelled out, so there won't be a doctor that accidentally kills his patient. If you target someone and they die, it's because you were prevented from your power being at all effective, or you are a naive doctor. It won't be because of hidden additional negative qualities such as not knowing whether or not you're secretly a killer.

There may also be roles in the game which gain powers or abilities under certain specific circumstances. Those powers or abilities, once gained, will be spelled out (as above) just like every other role with a power.

Weak doctors, if any, would be spelled out in the role PM- in fact, the only hidden aspect of one's power is whether or not the power is functional, or non-functional ("naive" to use the mafia terminology).

The win conditions of neutrals would be spelled out at game start for those players in their role PM. However, it may be possible for neutrals to voluntarily join the side of the Protagonists or Antagonists, and thereby share their victory condition, replacing their own initial win condition. The victory condition of those teams is about what you'd expect- Protagonists need to utterly wipe out the Antagonists to win, and Antagonists need to achieve parity with the remaining Protagonists and Neutrals combined.

In other words, Neutrals count as Protagonists for the purposes of parity, and are thus considered at least potentially valuable to the Protagonists, particularly if the numbers of the Protagonists dwindle. However, since they can elect to vote with the Antagonists, and do not need to be defeated by the Antagonists, they are less of a threat to the Antagonist side. They are designed such that either team could consider them a potentially useful ally, and not specifically a threat.

The reason for this design is that neutrals are often thrown in as a bit of flavor, but are usually teamless, uninformed, unwelcome and unwanted by everyone, village and mafia alike. They are typically just lynch or murder fodder with a fancy name and victory conditions which will likely never be fulfilled. When I put neutrals in a game, I try to design them such that they are considered welcome and useful to all sides, and have realistic victory conditions which don't conflict with most others (otherwise, they wouldn't actually be neutral). The challenge is in convincing a team that you'd be useful to them, or at the very least, not useful to their opponents... or trying to achieve a win before being killed off.

Soon, I'm running a bit behind because vacation time was unexpected, badly needed, and a much higher priority than anything else in my life.

I have two days off as soon as my next work shift ends tomorrow, I intend to have the game running shortly thereafter, but sign ups are still open.
