I wanted to do update the OP tomorrow and will try how it looks. Only thing I don't like about it, if I do that, I don't see any reason to write ALL-CAPS stuff not in all caps.

But I think I'm just going to add both (i.e. doing the exact same capitalization as in the comic) and if given add the articles used.

EDIT: OP Updated. For now I have adopted to in-comic spelling as good as possible (including capitalization). I also "officially" included non-character stuff.

Added. Though after this comic I honestly ponder whether it would be better to say that he addresses Vampire!Durkon/HPoH and not Durkon.

That's a good point. Belkar believes that the vampire is not Durkon, so I think it would make sense to have him addressing the High Priest of Hel.

Everyone is talking to the HPOH at this point, but Belkar is a special case because he knows its not-Durkon and is specifically calling out the imposter as he's addressing the imposter.

That's my point. Belkar knows it's not Durkon, and thinks of him as such. The Order, on the other hand, believes they are addressing Durkon.

As rodneyAnonymous pointed out I think it is better to draw no lines. I don't think there is a hard set of rules that we can really agree what is a name or not. So imo instead of adding countless discussion we just collect awesome stuff, and let the reader figure out whether it counts as name or not

On the Durkon/HPoH front: I'm still not exactly sure myself, but since I have counted two peoples who think a change is useful (at least I understood it that way), I'm changing that. But nothing is set in stone, so if someone wants to disagree, feel free to say something.

Oh, I thought per OOTS #957 (Takes One to Know One), we would be discussing Durkon's proposal for a new title for this thread: "Spontaneous nicknames and olfactory insults from Belkar".

    Mind = blown.

That hasn't crossed my mind in the slightest way, but it just seems brilliant to use an in-comic phrase if available! So this is done!

(But I'm not adding "olfactory insults" because I don't see a reason to collect those - but feel free to start a thread yourself )

I was wondering what had happened to the title.

Should we capitalize the "n" at the beginning of "nicknames".

If we use the phrase from the comic (which I really like), I think we should also use the given capitalization. (Otherwise I would most likely capitalize it myself)

So unless the Giant's changes the strip, I'm not planning on changing it again

Nuts-er definitely isn't a nickname, its a commentary of the fact that he already considers Elan to be a bit off. "nuts" in this case is being used like crazy.
“Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life. But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”

My thought while reading 989: "Count No-neckula is a nice nickname for the spontaneous nicknames thread. I sure will update it after reading the strip!"
*5 days later*: I get a message that someone posted in this thread and think: "Mh, I guess my attention span sometimes is as bad as Elan's..."

Yeah, unless I see other peoples who think that "Nuts-er" should be included I will not do so. Especially with the question mark and all it is imo clear that "nuts" is being used an adjective and "nuts-er" as the comparative to it. (Kinda like saying "Have you gone crazy? crazier??")

Indeed Belkar also use "nuts-est" about Roy. English is not my mother tongue, I wasn't sure it was used as a superlative :D

On the other hand from that same strip he refers to Roy as 'bigfoot' which would seem to be a spontaneous nicknames.

I do wonder why there's question marks after the entry for "rod of lordly might". Surely that's a reference to Belkar's.. er ... Trouser Titan.

Because it is kinda awkward to write something else into that field At least I know I don't want to write "Trouser Titan" because, well that is established as belonging to Roy .

Maybe it would be better to write something else, but I have no good Idea. If you have some good suggestion I'm up for it, but the only alternative I have would be similar strings like "###" or "..." (but somehow "..." messes with sorting by Addressee, so that imo isn't an useful option anyway).

I already have entries from Uncivil Servant and OtOoPCs, so I see no reason to exclude SSaDT or Haleo and Julean. As for whether the Stick Tales versions of Belkar qualify as Belkar is a good question. I would lean on the side of inclusion (because these characters are rather near their original).

Basically yes I'd say. When Fourth Wall Breaking the characters often act like actors acting out roles, so why not include the characters acting out roles in the story.

Mh, I don't really see much of any metaphors going on there. The only thing that would somewhat fit would be the "freezing my considerable assets off", though I'm not sure what it should reference.
I think it is pretty clear that “my considerable assets” refers to Belkar’s rod of lordly might.
