Do be careful. If that's a syndrome of some kind, it could be contagious.

Engage quarantine measures. RELEASE THE MAGMA!

Claspedchurches: This is a mudstone dwarven fortress. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with bauxite, studded with ice, decorated with gold, and adorned with hanging rings of magma. This fortress menaces with spikes of steel, iron, bronze, and silver. On the fortress is an image of an image of cheese in pitchblende.

On the fortress is an image of a megaweapon in gold, silver, jet, obsidian and adamantine. The goblins are burning.

Luckily it seems it was a blood thing or acid spit as only he had it on him, nobody else showed signs of infection (but that is why I put the burrow/hospital in his room with the double doors+fortification vents, just in case the miasma got worse and he started killing people around him I could lock it off easier), also remember the magma is waaaay down deep due to the water glitch, which I think I figured out part of, I put cavern openness to 100 apparently, and I had minimum cavern water to 15, tried another fort with similar but modified settings, trying to get one with more usable z-levels and hopefully at least iron somewhere around there.

No luck on iron yet, but well...

At the bottom of THIS waterfallcano it apparently gets cold enough to form ice on top of the obsidian after it cools, unfortunately I get periodic collapse spams from the ice freezing and then melting away each winter.

Engraved here is a rendition of an image of the Dwarf Fortress learning curve. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It depicts an obsidian overhang which menaces with spikes of obsidian and tears. Carved on the overhang is an image of Toady One and the players. The players are curled up in a fetal position. Toady One is laughing. The players are burning.

I don't mind if you take a bit long, the fort does crawl along ever so slowly thanks to all the dwarves we have. If Clown Drowner hasn't filled yet, that might be getting you some extra lag as well.

    Ok, I'm officially stumped here.

I noticed some fixes for 40.08 were up and got it loaded and working, but the keybinds are all wonky... figure maybe it was the save so I try a fresh install, nothing. Tried lazy newb pack, nothing. No matter what I do with the keybinds, no matter how I set them, my options are this:

Hoping I get the right keys linked up because it is really hit and miss if you change anything accidentally because ONLY those keys work for those functions apparently... or I can try to clear the problem binds out which just gives me a bunch of ???? instead of the binds showing up.

I don't see how these binds for the visible keys there:

Turns into that weird and troublingly persistent binding. Is this a new default layout that I just can't find mentioned anywhere? Did I end up in bizarro world? Anyone from another country and recognize the binding as being the same as would show up in their native tongue maybe?

I may have trimmed the wrong ones from that one just now, I just shortened it because it was waaay too long to post, but yeah, it's basically the default layout except for the numpad mappings (5 to enter, 1/0 to z up/down, 7 and / to secondary select up and down, * and + to page select up and down, . to pause, - to esc) so I'm really confused here.

Edit: it seems to be possessed, when I tried to remove all the binds, it made some work which were missing (wealth on m, query on v, unit list on s) but it made some disappear entirely, designations, unit look, and announcement I think?

Putting them back just mixed up the order more, and even trying to put the right ones back on to reproduce the original messed up layout didn't work. Gonna do a pacman -Syu and see if that fixes a library or something that might be borked?

Engraved here is a rendition of an image of the Dwarf Fortress learning curve. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It depicts an obsidian overhang which menaces with spikes of obsidian and tears. Carved on the overhang is an image of Toady One and the players. The players are curled up in a fetal position. Toady One is laughing. The players are burning.

    Sounds like lots of !Fun!

Regarding the keybind issue, it doesn't seem to be messing with 34.11, but I don't see anyone else reporting it as a 40.08 bug so that's a whole other kind of fun.

It doesn't look like they can get in to the fort, at least.

I don't know if I can finish this turn. It's taken about two hours to get through two months, probably due to the filling of the *unprintable* drowner (a;though the massive amount of junk probably isn't helping), and I don;t have the patience to play more than a half hour or so at a time when it;s like this.

    Death to FPS.

On the upside, DF2014 is looking more and more stable.

The intake valves for the water tank can be closed, you just have to find the right levers is all.

From the way it looks, that won't stop the speed problem for a long time. It takes forever for water to level off when partially depleted, and that's just as draining.

Also, I hope nobody minds, but I've been using DFhack's clean map function everytime something dies (dug a pit toward the lava, but didn't finish the last tile. Was dumping goblin prisoners down it when one got loose, spooking the handlers of the other ten prisoners or so that were being dumped. Took awhile, and a few losses, to put them down. Honestly, I'd be tempted to throw all the babies down there if I could figure out how there's like twenty of them, and I've had four births already). Unless there's a syndrome involved (which there isn't), blood spatter is just an ugly headach, and something else for the machine to track.

And track it will. On the dogs, on the feet, to all that said feet touch.

dfclean is practically REQUIRED for any fort above 150 pop.

    Yeah.

Luckily, for DF2014, a strict hard cap of 220 is now automatically enforced for new games, and you can set it even lower if you need to. I'll heartily recommend capping it to a 100.

Speaking of, I apparently fixed the keybind thing by trying to update on another account on this system, then logging back to this one and updating put them back to normal, which is yay. Still haven't gotten dfhack working on either version, though I hear it is due to be working for 40.08 any time now.

You're welcome to abandon and start a new fot since you weren't able to finish a year. I'm not having this pinned on my however!

From the looks of things. 40.08 has most of the nasty bugs sorted out. Should I gen a world in that and start a new foprt?

Tips I found for more fun in 40.08: Set Volanism Mesh to the highest one for the map size, set the weighting to something like 10/8/6/4/2, raise minimum volcanoes to like 10 and keep hills/forest minimum from being too high, POW, tons of volcano sites to choose from. :D

Edit: I found a totally flat embark site with a column volcano in the center. :D

What kind of biome would you be settling in?

Honestly, I rarely look at the biome unless I want freezing water. I mostly look at aqueducts and minerals.

EDIT: Been busier than expected today, so I'll do the turn tomorrow. I'm reclaiming a destroyed (worldgen) fort that has all the civs as neighbors. This should be interesting.

Didn't see the post til just now, was trying to figure out why I was getting so much FPS drop with the newer versions, note that I made this save with 40.08 originally as I recall, but it works with 40.09 as I just tried it.

    http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9434

I have tried lots of setting tweaks but I keep getting hits from starting at 150 FPS (30 graphical refresh) and pretty quickly after setting up and starting to dig out store rooms and bedrooms and such it kerplops to 84 (29) or even down to like 64 (24) which is just maddening. Running much bigger forts with the same settings works fine in 34.11, and I didn't get the same issues in 40.06 or earlier.

Remember that the new version is also simulating the larger world around you, which didn't happen in the previous versions.

I'm not sure we should use this fort. I expected to have to carefully clear out the ruins slowly, digging in on the surface and methodically clearing each level. So far, I've recovered 200+ forges in an immense (if incredibly ugly) excavation, and not a single sign of any hostiles.

Don't forget the massive empty entry yard with the weird 1 square path around it (how is it they can get wagons to path over that but I forget to remove one up ramp and I get nothing but depot inaccessible?) and the neverending spiral ramp of forevernessery!

I've yet to see a reclaim fort without those.

Now, I admit, I didn't really get the knack of stairs until very recently (shhhh, if you happened to grab one of my saves, pay no attention to the mess of ramp spirals) as I didn't realize you can just:

    j (down stair) >
    i (up + down) x
    ...repeat ...
    u ( up stair ) <

...and vice versa in a single column mineshaft, so much time spent doing the:

    c(h)annel - (d)ig - (d)ig
    --------------------- c(h)annel
    ---------------------- (d)ig
    ---------------------- (d)ig

    Type of spirals for nothing...

As for the FPS, I've got a 3x3 embark in a 63x63 world, only 250 years of history, so little population that I suddenly found myself with a Queen and a Baroness (who nobly sacrificed themselves in a charge against a werepanda and some animated corpses after I conscripted them into the military due to them being less useful than the 15 non-noble dorfs I had at the time) and I'm currently puttering along with something like 31 dorfs, I've got quantum stockpiles going to reduce pile size, I did begin carving out a huge bedroom/throneroom and less-huge bedroom/office for the queen/baroness, was in the process of smoothing everything, loading it with high value goodies, spamming cabinets, and alas, they decided that rather than waiting to let things try to make it into the meatgrinder hallway I so carefully built before cracking the outside wall, or perhaps doing something like hanging behind the competent hammerdorf in full iron plate, or the novice axedorf in slightly less impressive armor, they would take the scraps of armor they had picked up and lead the charge.

Honestly I didn't intend that to happen, they were stationed at the back of the barracks, which was tucked back behind a hall with four or five excellent to masterwork mechanism'D weapon traps, plus two bridges arranged to push stuff into a 2 z drop with atom smashers waiting at the bottom.

I figured the werepanda+undead would start trickling in and get chopped into goop which I would then order the military to go hammer flat, as per my usual early siege tactics... and instead I see my two unskilled, poorly armored, newly christened members of royaltly pick up a *Iron Short Sword* and *Iron Shield* each, and charge to their doom, only managing to trip up one undead and taking off a limb from the panda I think. The rest of the military let the goons trickle into the traps before finishing them off, but my royalty problem solved itself all the same.

I've just started repurposing their chambers, got six smelters, four forges, a kiln and a glass furnace plugged into the volcano downstairs, four farm plots, and yet I'm still seeing the "year 2~3, fps = 0.5" trend all the same. I'm stumped.
