    I dont think I've seen it elsewhere. At least not in any other japanese films. God knows I watch enough of em.

    My wife's not familiar with it either. The closest she can think of is in the anime Ikkyu san, where the title character does the same circular motion on the sides of his head before thinking/meditating.

    The only possible answer I can come up with is that it may have been a reference to the ring motif of the film.

    I'll look, but given the term 'serial killer' didn't come about until the 1970s, it's unlikely. There was a German phrase 'serienmorder', literally 'serial murderer' used in 1930.

    That's not to say there weren't people who went on killing sprees (Wikipedia link), just that there wasn't a neat catch-all term for them. I'm wondering if another description would be suitable - mass murderer/killer?

    Perhaps just the term for murderer them? Just about every society has one of those.

    I suppose Hitogoroshi is the term you'd be looking for, although I don't know how old it is.
