Desolation of Smaug Question

I've been playing Lego Hobbit and I've just finished the events of the second movie where it feels like they're using the audio from the movie and I noticed something odd and I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before.

Can someone confirm for me whether Smaug identifies Thorin Oakenshield by name?

If this is true how does a dragon who was sleeping since expelling the dwarves from Erebor know about an event whilst he was asleep?

A) You don't know he was literally asleep the whole time.
B) the Thrushes told Smaug so there could be a more dramatic confrontation

He wasn't asleep the whole time. He just wasn't also actively reaving across the country side. He's quite aware of external events. His grasping on Bilbo's comment about barrel riding means he was aware of the practices of the men of lake town, a city that was set up after he created the desolation and entered the mountain. Tolkien also mentions dragons have a good idea of the current market value of the various treasure in their hoard. So Smaug has some form of intelligence gathering, fitting with the character.

Or maybe you're right and he took class levels in cleric.

Thorin was there when Smaug took over so he may have remembered the face and name (plus probably lots of portraits on the horde)!

Hopeless' question isn't about recognizing the deposed King under the Mountain, it's how he knew about Thorin's epithet, which he gained after Smaug attacked.

Somehow, I doubt the writers put that much thought into it. Everybody else knows the character as Thorin Oakenshield, so that is the title that Smaug uses. End of story.

Yes. Yes he does. IIRC, when talking about the Arkenstone, Smaug mentions Thorin Oakenshield by name as the one that Bilbo is probably stealing it for.
