Re: Civ V Multiplayer 7: Civ and Let Die
I'm here, but it feels like it'd be bad form to jump in after saying I was going to drop out. At least without hearing from Techwarrior, I think. If everyone is really keen to get this started now I could pick up a link though.

Re: Civ V Multiplayer 7: Civ and Let Die
Well, I think it is fair to say since I posted about it that I am rather eager for us to start, so i would be in favor of that decision.

Hmm, I decide I would try and join then, but all the links are giving me a "cannot join game".

Re: Civ V Multiplayer 7: Civ and Let Die
I thought the consensus was me being at least a week and a half-ish out from reliable Civ'ing was a deal-breaker. I'd love to be put on the list if someone drops, or you want an extra player AND can wait.

Re: Civ V Multiplayer 7: Civ and Let Die
And we're off, first post has been updated with game details and the player list.
Thus begins The Life of the Songhai People.
"Gao. The city seems to have stood since time began, overlooking the river for as long as it has carried water. Even before our people came upon it, Gao stood. But it did not rise until we, The Songhai, came to it. For even if a foundation is strong, it is how it is built upon that defines - and our ancestors were great builders indeed. Understand this when we look upon Gao: whatever it may have been, it is we who made it what is."
(I'll have a map for spectators up next turn).

I shot them a message today. Apparently they'd not seen that it was their turn. No word on how long it would be until they could play though.

And now it looks like Giant Multiplayer Robot is having some issues; I can't access the site and my desktop app isn't showing the game anymore. Here's hoping it gets resolved soon.

Re: Civ V Multiplayer 7: Civ and Let Die
Giant Multiplayer Robot has been back up and working for a while, but we are still waiting on NotAEvilToaster to take their turn. I don't want to be a jerk, but it is very frustrating for the game to get hung up for 5 whole days now before I get to even take my first turn. How much longer are we going to wait for one person?

Re: Civ V Multiplayer 7: Civ and Let Die
All is forgiven, friend.
___
After untold years of wandering and strife, a strong and scarred people laid down their burdens and ceased their endless wanderings. In the shadow of a lonely, icy peak, they laid the foundations of a new kingdom. They had known only the hard life of the nomad and the barbarian, but aching bodies and bloody memories did not stop them from dreaming of something better, of something greater; of civilization. In that hope, they made their home in the shade of the mountain, near the very beginnings of recorded history. They called themselves Swihoniz, meaning "one's own", but in time that would shift into Sverige, "Kingdom of the Svenskar (Swedes)".

Spoiler: Spectators Only!
Hello there, spectator friends!
So in all honesty I'm not crazy about my start due to the lack of real strong food resources. I really considered moving towards the coast or waiting for more scouting information, but in the end I decided to settle here. It does have a very strong luxury resource in Gold, and Stone, double Cotton, and Sheep aren't... terrible, I guess. The mountain is sort of a dead tile but it does eventually mean that Stockholm can get an Observatory, which is nice considering my plans.
I made my first tech choice Pottery for the Granary; I think I need the food badly, and if I can pop an early religion that could help too. I don't except to get the first religion, though, more on that later. I'll obviously want to prioritize Mining early to hook up my Gold, as well as Animal Husbandry and Plantations, but I was hoping that I could get Mathematics fairly early and try for the Hanging Gardens. In all honesty though, I feel that lack of a real solid food resource might put those plans on the backburner.
As Sweden, I want peace and lots of declarations of friendship as I run specialists and Great Person Point generating wonders to pump out the great people and hopefully get myself some advantages through that. Great Scientists are the best Great People (for the most part; science helps any victory condition), and are my primary aim for the time being. I hope to keep things peaceful until my unique units arrive and I have a secure position; then I may want to get more aggressive and push out. We'll see, though.
I am quite nervous, though, as the random draw has pulled out quite a few civilizations that seem tilted towards early game aggression to my eyes. Mr. Silver's Songhai is obviously aggressive with the razing bonus and the cavalry with no attack penalty against cities, and the unique building he has means he can aim for culture and religion if he wants to. I'll be surprised if he wants to play this game peacefully. GPuzzle's Brazil is a slower, late game civ, but when those unique units come he will certainly want to get his hands bloody. He'll be passive early game, and focus on building towards the culture victory his civ is designed for.
OrcusMcP's Poland is a little flexible, like Songhai, but has strong incentives to push out with Hussars and Ducal Stables producing powerfully promoted cavalry units. He certainly has the potential to go aggressive, much like Songhai, although his Civ power is not dependent on conquest like the former's. SaruSama drew Aztecs. Not the most powerful civ, but definitely focused on aggression, with a powerful Warrior UU (for the brief moment it lasts) and a very situational building (or is it a tile improvement? I forget.) His Civ Power will let him reap some benefits from being an expansive, Liberty/wide conquest focused empire.
NotAEvilToaster is Venice. Venice will want peace for nice trade routes. I think Venice will like me. His UU Great Merchant synergies well with the Great Person Generating bonus a Declaration of Friendship with me will give him. And I'll like his money.
Ryuho Tsugu's China is another example of a flexible civ, but one that can certainly push for aggression. Great General generation and the awesome Cho-Ko-Nu is a fearsome combination, and gold-earning Libraries are a nice bonus that will help him whatever he does.
banthesun's Byzantium is a civ that is going to head straight for a religion. Or at least, that's what I would do in his shoes. Other than that, I don't feel too confident predicting what he might be able to do. Religion is a flexible instrument capable of benefiting many routes to victory.
What I'm hoping is that some of the flexible civs, like China and Poland, choose to play nice, or at least nice with me, and don't point their potent aggression at me. I imagine the Aztecs and Songhai will want to be aggressive, so I just hope they aren't near me. And Venice, Brazil, and possibly Byzantium could very easily be in the bag as peaceful friends-with-great-person-benefits. Hopefully, I can get along with as many people as possible and pump out Great People until I am ready to act. Time will tell if this rosy scenario is plausible.

Re: Civ V Multiplayer 7: Civ and Let Die
6000 years of Chinese history starts with a single step.
Spoiler: for spectators
or rather, two steps.

Delayed the founding of the capital by one turn to get next to the ocean (or at least I hope it's an ocean and not an inland lake or something).
Pros of this position: nearby stone and marble, to get some early production (and maybe a wonder or two?), and some silver.
Cons: don't see any fish or hills, and unforested tundra to the north/east indicating plenty of dead tiles and a position well north of the equator.

Spoiler: Spectator Update
So here's Constantinople! Looks good so far, we've got a desert start, so hopefully a lot of early faith, and three luxury resources in range. My plan is simple, go wide, then take holy sites for faith tourism. So far so good, but we'll have to see how the other players interfere.Awesome Iron Chef avatars by Neoseph7! Re: Civ V Multiplayer 7: Civ and Let Die
Casimir sat in his throne room, reading the reports of the scouts. The river valley was fertile indeed, with many trade goods nearby. And further goods lay to the south east, near another river. Poland would grow wealthy and mighty in a land like this.
Spoiler: Spectators
Forked river with lots of hills, not a huge amount of resources, but a good variety of luxury goods is always awesome. Probably gonna go Tradition, aim for Rationality. I'll try to have value other than just science, though.

I have to say, in hindsight I feel kinda silly for worrying my timezone would slow the game down.
