Evidently. Which is fine, it's good news to me. I'm just confused as to when/why it was removed after having been in there for quite some time.

As far as I'm aware, Smogon has never enforced Item Clause. It's not a matter of when/why they removed it, it was never there to remove.

Smogon predates the VGC by 5 years, so there's that. I don't know when exactly they came up with their ruleset, but it likely had nothing to do with the VGC rules.

Item Clause was definitely a thing during Gen IV, or I have memory is far worse than I ever imagined...

Looks like Smogon had a facebook post on it last year. Er, looks like Smogon has a facebook.
Item Clause is one of the few clauses that exists in the VGC Metagame that doesn't exists in Smogon Metagames. One advantage of Item Clause is that it increases the predictability of the battle when only one Pokemon can hold an item (such as Choice Scarf), while also increasing the diversity in the items that Pokemon will use, such as more Type Gems and Type Resist Berries. On the other hand, item clause is viewed as an unnecessary ban fixes a problem that isn't really there, adding a rule where one isn't needed.
I also found a thread on Smogon's forums from 2007 (roughly when Gen 4 was released outside of Japan) where people were discussing whether or not it should remain standard, so it probably trickled out of usage from there.

I kinda imagine the only reason why it remains in official play is just friction from the GSC era, when the only real worthwhile items were Leftovers and the status restoring berry, so everyone loaded up on those.

So the summer has been busy for me. (I've only logged ~150 hours over the past three months - the shame!) However, my list of breeding leftovers has only grown. All have at least 4 good IVs, are completely free for you to take, and are first-come/first-serve. If you had previously asked me for something, and would still like it, ask again, as I don't remember whom I traded with before I disappeared. If you want to set up a particular time for trading, PM away; otherwise, I'll trade when you pop up online.

I'm sorry to hear all that, times like this are never easy. It sounds like he went out more or less in a way that was acceptable to him, though, and that's something to embrace. I hope you all manage well with everything over the next little while.

To carry forward - I'll keep an eye open for you, and next time I see you on, I'll let you know what your third Safari 'mon is.

Okay, that was... not all that short in the end but I do tend to go on a bit at times like this...

    Aaaanyway, back on topic.

Both are in the OP (but name is Bleakbane for reference). Added both you and JustPlayItLoud.

I also had another stab at the Great Charmander Breeding Project and I appear to have got at least a couple of female Solar Power Charmanders - literally my next job is going to go check their IVs and see how good they are before I can start back on the next round.
Sorry for your loss. It can be tough.

So, I haven't been to active in the XY metagame since the launch. However, yesterday, I helped my friend--who I've wanted to join the metagame for sometime now--design a team. So far, it has won every single game it's been in.

When designing my friend's team, we started with his favorite Pokemon (Scizor) and went from there, building the team not so much around it, but more using it as a catalyst, if you will. I'm finally fired up to get in to the XY metagame myself, but I just can't seem to do the same thing. (Namely because my fave Pokemon (Suicune and Salamence) are UU this gen, and I really just want to stick with OU.)

    It's really rather infuriating.

Does anyone have any pointers on team building?

Salamence is actually BL at the moment. Considering that even UU stuff can work in OU with a little work (sometimes, even RU, situationally), I don't think you'll have much of a problem.

EDIT: Got the Pinsir event. Mine was Adamant, female, Mold Breaker. Unfortunately, all I got from the IV guy was "fantastic" HP, "above average" overall. And Hidden Power Fighting. So 28 / 22 - 23 / 20 - 21 / 8 / 16 / 16. Could be worse? Not sure if I should try to train it up... breeding a better one is so much work.

'Mence can work, still, it's just that it can have trouble dealing with things like Azumarill (immune to Dragon Claw/Outrage, potentially ridiculous physical stats for i.e. Play Rough), Greninja (Protean Ice Beam OHKOs Multiscale Dragonite, 'Mence doesn't stand a chance), and MegaZard X (just as fast as a non-Scarfed 'Mence, but has Tough Claws and STAB Flare Blitz to do the same things better).

MegaMence will probably shoot right up back to OU and possibly beyond, though. Aerilate Return is seriously powerful.

Barring Rock, Electric, or Dragon types, it can OHKO everything Scarfed 'Mence's Outrage can, and a good number of the things Banded 'Mence can. Unless it gets a ridiculous boost to Attack (instead of just a decent boost), it's unlikely it'll beat Banded 'Mence's Outrage across the board.

    Surprises are always fun!

Re: Salamence, the thing also learns Double-Edge, a.k.a. Thrash without the lock-in. Dragon Dance/Double-Edge/Earthquake/Roost will be nuts.

EDIT: Mega Charizard X is probably the best Dragon Dancer at the moment. Non-Mega Salamence has the same Speed and slightly higher Attack, and Aerilate Double-Edge hits almost exactly as hard as Tough Claws Flare Blitz (and arguably with a better offensive type). Any Mega stat boosts are gravy on top of that. No matter how I punch the numbers into my calculator, they make a happy face.

I am unquestionably building a team around Mega Mence when OR/AS come out. I still have my perf. Mence from DPPt. Love that little guy.

I think we'll be eagerly awaiting a stat spread for MegaMence. Going from being banned for part of Gen IV to slipping out of OU bums me out. The other fat dragon got plenty of love with Multiscale, hopefully Mence gets some love to bring it back to the top. I doubt it will, but I also kind of hope its stat boosts bring MixMence back. I've always liked going mixed with the big dragons.

I can do surprises. If I don't catch you in the next couple days, I'll PM you and try to work something out.

Just some idle musing on my part... we have the abilities refrigerate, aerilate, pixilate which boost power and change types of normal moves... what -ate abilities would be given to other types of pokémon to do the same?

    Grass: Germinate?
    Fire: Immolate?
    Dark: Eliminate?/Terminate?

ION: i'm designing a team, but since i know nothing of the meta it probably won't work very well but it'll win battles in my friends group at least

    Spoiler: team (WIP)
    Show

    it consists of:
    • shuckle, gluttony, [current moveset: power trick, power split, guard split, bug bite], 252 def and SpD, the rest is speed [the RNG hated me, gave it perfect SpA IV's, and made it Rash]
    • ferrothorn, iron barbs, [current moveset: self-destruct, ingrain, power whip, gyroball], brave, with perfect def IV's, maxed out both defenses, and put the rest in attack, it holds a rocky helmet
    • aegislash, perfect IV's, Quiet, [current moveset: king's sheild, shadow ball, night slash, pursuit], maxed out defenses EV's, rest is in HP, holds a leppa berry
    • drapion, battle armour, careful, 4-IV's (HP, Atk, Def, SpD), still training it, and deciding on moves (still need to evolve it)
    • forretress, sturdy, relaxed, holds an occa berry, maxed out defenses, rest in HP, 5-IV's (missing speed), [current moveset: toxic spikes, spikes, stealth rock, gyro ball]
    • gliscor, impish, poison heal, toxic orb, 4-IV's (missing speed and SpD), [current moveset: u-turn, knock off] (need to train and evolve)

the party has 2 untrained/unevolved pokemon at the moment (hopfully they'll be finished by this time tomorrow)

tl:dr. the party is; Shuckle, Ferrothorn, Aegislash, Drapion, Forretress, Gliscor (two of them still need training and evolving)

Actually, I was looking for a HA Weedle quite a while ago. No one here seemed to have one, so I went to the GTS and managed to find one. I've got some 5IV Jolly Run Away Weedles, if you want one. And access to your Safari is more than enough in trade for it (though if you don't mind, I'd be more than willing to take one of the Bagon off of your hands).

That's a mighty bulky team. At the very least, grab Knock Off on Drapion.

I saw you last night, Zelt, so if you're having trouble getting ahold of Rez, I can give you an ESpeed Dratini.

I just went through the trouble of chasing down the Sea Spirit (Arcticuno for me). I am now confused. It's Level 70, which I assumed would be a problem because immediately after getting to Kiloude I stopped training my original team and started breeding things and training them to battle-usability (usually around 50).

I sent out my Level Fifty-Something (<55, but I've run out of battery so I can't check) Mega Blastoise. One Aura Sphere and three Dark Pulses and the Arcticuno was at one pixel of health, give or take, having used Ice Beam, Reflect, and I-don't-even-remember to bring Blastoise down to still-more-than-half.

And then I caught it first try in a Nest Ball.

    Something feels wrong about this.

I can help with Weedle, too, I found myself in your position a little while back. I now have a half dozen Jolly HA Weedles. A HA Tangela would be appreciated, I don't need any specific number of IVs, just the ability would be great.
    Pokemon friend code : 3067-5701-8746

Trade list can be found on my Giant League wiki page, all pokemon are kept in stock with 5 IVs, most with egg moves, some bred for Hidden Powers. Currently at 55 in stock and counting.

So I started Pokemon Y yesterday after a years long break from the franchise, and I'm loving everything so far. But I can't help but get a niggling feeling of being expected to do things a certain way.

I mean you've got your basic starter, one of the G1 starters, the fossil pokemon, and the pikachu that the game basically expects you to capture early on. Before you hit the second gym, that's basically two thirds of your party set.
