Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Yeah that sound like a pretty good list tbh. I'm just poor at translating fluff into skill's, tend to over or under do it .

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
hehe, yeah, TBH i think half my issue comes from how detailed i like to get with fluff, have enough detail and you can justify almost anything. It thus becomes hard to separate the important bits for skill decisions from the mass.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Zaydos' votes have been tallied and the winners determined.
In 1st Place: Dragonsoul Acolyte, by Zaydos!
In 2nd Place: Draconic Warlord, by Dire_Stirge!
And in 3rd Place: Dragon Hunter, by Vaynor!
During this contest's voting period, I got a message pertaining to voting rules. It was suggested that we could implement something similar to how The Iron Mage contest's voting works: voting is mandatory for participants' entries to qualify for winning.
What does everyone think? I know it puts even more of a strain on people that do so much work on their classes, but it also gets more votes in and sort of deals with the whole "can't vote for self" rule.Homebrew

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I'd been meaning to suggest that myself, or that if you vote your class gets 3 points so that voting never hurts you, for a few contests just felt weird doing it, so I'd definitely second the motion.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Congratulations Zaydos! The amount of work you put into your class was commendable. I will, however, state for the record that it is unfair that this contest was about dragons since you so clearly are obsessed with them. I would like to request that the next contest be entirely dragon-free in order to level the playing field.
On a more serious note, we had a lot of great entries this round. I wish I had had time to read them all.
I would agree with the voting rules change.Last edited by Vaynor; 2014-10-25 at 02:10 PM.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
All hail Zaydos the Dragonbrewer!!!
I'm ok with the new voting rule: i couldn't manage to vote this time (a mix of IRL commitments and personal forgetfulness ) but i'll try to be more observant in the future!
For the new dungeon-theme contest i'm trying to develop a "trapcaster", since traps are an iconic presence in dungeon: it will be a class able to create traps as spell-like ability conjuring them from an homebrewed demiplane (it will also be posted).
I hope i'll manage to do everything and to do it well!Last edited by MrNobody; 2014-10-26 at 03:28 PM.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I was thinking about a class that's like a Spider from shadowrun that "plugs in" to the dungeon and takes control of all the traps and defences, but I realize that that is a very situational ability that does nothing half the time.
I'll have to think about it.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I stayed up all night and finished the Dungeoncrasher. Basically, he's Thog. At first level, he breaks opponents. At second level, he breaks objects. At seventh level, he breaks the world. At sixteenth level, he breaks the action economy. PEACHes welcome! At twentieth level, he returns to the broken remnants of the action economy and stomps them into dust.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
So, I've spent three long nights working on it. But the Ravensworn is done. It is dungeon-themed in that the creatures which it would ordinarily fight are typically found in dungeons. It also has a rich and I think, rather outstanding amount of fluff that would create an interesting canvas from which to draw inspiration for a character.
Anyone want to review it?

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Joining in late missed the previous one but I have time all of a sudden!
I'll be putting up a reserve post with most of my mechanic ideas.Realized I might need two or three posts in a row since I'm basically making a completely new spell list, so I'll hold off until I've got most things done For now:
Spoiler: EngineerGood reflex, will, 3/4 BAB, d6 hit dice
Spell progression as Bard
Contraptions: Use/day as spells/day.
Camouflage: You become better at hiding traps, automatically requiring a spot check to see.
Name:
Type (level):
Setup Time:
Trigger (range):
Duration:
Effect:
Save:
Types:
Construct - Creates an ally.
Trap - Has a trigger and a generally one-time effect.
Gear - Improves or creates equipment.
Triggers:
None - Effect occurs immediately after making the contraption.
Area (Length x Width, Range) - Effect triggers when an enemy enters the noted area. Range indicates how far away the target can be from the origin of the effect. A range of 0 indicates that the trap trigger area is the same as its effect area.
Contingent (Cause) - Effect triggers when (cause) occurs.
Contingent Area (Cause, Length x Width, Range) - As Area, except only if (cause) is in effect.
Remote (Range) - Effect triggers with a free action that can be used outside of the Engineer's turn.
Note: Save DCs are (10+Contraption Level*2+Int Mod). Unless otherwise noted, traps require a DC (15+Contraption Level*2+Int Mod) spot check or that DC -5 search check to find.
Spoiler: Level 1 Contraptions
Crossbow Turret:
Type: Construct/Trap 1
Setup Time: 1 Standard Action
Trigger: None, Area (5x5, 100)
Duration: 1 minute
Save: None
You place an automatically firing turret on the ground, setting it to fire at a certain area. Creates a medium sized turret with 6 AC and 7+3/Engineer level hit points, which attacks at enemies in the targeted or trapped square, dealing 1d8 damage on a hit.
At TL 5, and every five levels thereafter, the turret increases one size category (gaining appropriate modifiers, including increased damage) as well as 20 bonus hit points and 5 armor class.
The turret is extremely easy to see, and unless otherwise hidden, takes no check to find.
Alchemical Trap:
Type: Trap 1
Setup Time: 1 Standard Action
Trigger: Area (5x5, 100)
Duration: Instantaneous
Save: None
You set up a small launcher to fling alchemical substances at an enemy. Upon trigger, the trap make a touch attack at the triggering enemy with any single grenadelike weapon.
At TL 4, and every three levels thereafter, you may put an additional weapon in the trap.
This trap is easy to see, lower the spot and search DC to find it by 5.
Flame Trap:
Type: Trap 1
Setup Time: 1 Full-Round Action
Trigger: (5x5, 0)
Duration: 5 rounds
Save: Reflex Half
You set up a small area with flammable oil. Upon trigger, the trapped five foot square lights on fire, dealing 1d6 damage and lighting enemies on fire.
At TL 4, you may increase the area to (10x10), and make the trap trigger only if a certain number of enemies are standing upon the , as well as increasing damage to 2d6. Every three levels, this area increases by +5/+5 and the damage increases by 1d6.
Charged Knuckles:
Type: Gear 1
Setup Time: 1 Standard Action
Trigger: None
Duration: 1 minute
Save: None
You equip a sort of power-charged, armored glove, allowing you to make unarmed strikes for lethal damage. Additionally, by reducing the duration of the gear by 1 round, you may charge the glove with energy, dealing an additional 1d6 damage with an unarmed strike. The type of energy is chosen when you create the contraption, and cannot be changed.
At TL 4, and every 3 levels thereafter, the additional energy damage increases by 1d6.
Pitfall:
Type: Trap 1
Setup Time: 5 minutes
Trigger: Area (5x5, 0)
Duration: Instantaneous
Save: Reflex Negates
You dig a short, spiked pit trap, camouflaging it. The pit trap requires a DC (15+Int Mod+1/2 TL) spot check, or a search check of 5 less. If an enemy falls in, they take 2d6 damage, and must spend a move action which provokes attacks of opportunity to get out.
At TL 4, you may increase the area to (10x10), and make the trap trigger only if a certain number of enemies are standing upon the area, as well as increasing damage to 3d6. Every three levels, this area increases by +5/+5 and the damage increases by 1d6.
Charged Armor:
Type: Gear 1
Setup Time: 5 minutes
Trigger: None
Duration: 24 hours
Save: None
You rig your armor with various supporting mechanisms, granting the same bonuses as Mithril, as well as an additional +2 to the armor bonus. Only you can use this armor, as the many nuances of the design are difficult to manage.
At TL 5, and every 5 levels thereafter, the bonus to armor increases by 1. Also, at TL 10, the design improves as to allow you to grant this to other allies.
Clockwork Construct N:
Type: Construct N
Setup Time: 1 full round
Trigger: None
Duration: 1 minute
Save: None
You craft a clockwork creature, quickly assigning it a task and letting it run. This is equivalent to Summon Monster of the same level, except that the resulting creature is a construct. This removes all (Su), (Sp) or (Ps) abilities, but hit dice, saves, base attack bonus, feats, and skills do not change. Hit points remain mostly unchanged, but all Construct traits, including bonus hit points are gained.
Like Summon Monster, this can be used to summon multiple creatures of a lower level.
Spell Trap: Store spells as traps.
Spell Turret: Continuously fire spells of up to half max level. Spells have CL lowered by 2/spell level.Last edited by r2d2go; 2014-11-08 at 02:01 AM.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
So its been a long time since I last posted... well anywhere on the giant's forums, but I have found myself drawn back by the good memories of the fun I had making base classes (Trueforge and the Dimensional Double) for these contests. I'm really pleased to see that even with 5e walking the world it still exists. Thanks for keeping this running Temotei!
Anyway, I've decided to enter with the Architect, a class based around basically minecrafting the world around you. Breaking blocks and placing them elsewhere is the name of the game, complete with the ability to reshape them into (sacrilege!) non-block shapes.
Dig deep into the earth in rapid time, build entire citadels out of mud or bring a mighty fortification crashing down!
Its all still very much a work in progress but its good to be back!Last edited by kanachi; 2014-11-09 at 01:33 PM.

Please feel free to PM me any thoughts on my homebrew (or comment in the thread if it's not too old).

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I am contemplating going with the laziest idea possible. The jack-of-all-trades dungeon delver, but my other ideas are just bad (person whose soul is a cage for some sort of entity, person who becomes an aberration or other creature anathema to the normal world), at least this could be kind of a fixed Savant (I love the concept of savant and a lot of the abilities but the execution was bad). But there's already factotum... decisions, decisions.
Current quick sketch would be the Ruin Delver: Medium BAB, 5th level Wiz/Cle casting (one 6th level wizard Transmutation, two 6th level cleric Conjuration (Healing) and one 7th level cleric Conjuration (Healing)), either all good saves or Good Ref/Will, 6 + Int skill points, Trapfinding, better Trap Sense than a rogue, +Level to Appraise/Decipher Script, ability to allow allies to use their skill ranks for a skill in place of ally's own (may have some limits on what type of skill it can apply to), benefits when using or receiving Aid Another/Flanking, some limited ability to go to full BAB for a bit (probably presented as some sort of adrenaline surge), maybe a few (fighter?) bonus feats, some search abilities.
Sound worth making? Mostly just marking down my ideas to see if I like them at the moment to be honest.
Edit: Finished class except for fluff; I'm going to have to actually read Savant for the first time in... when did Dragon Magazine Compendium come out? And see if it's too close to just being a fixed Savant. Looking over Savant their skill assistance abilities work somewhat differently (Ruin Delver can change the skills more easily but Savant's seems to actually have a re-roll rolled in since it implies you still roll with your skill ranks and the DM rolls with the Savant's in secret and then you decide which you want), Savant gets sneak attack and less restricted but fewer bonus feats, Ruin Delver gets skill mastery, pseudo-ranks in all skills, significantly better casting, ability to go Full BAB for a short duration, search based stuff, and improved aid another/flanking. I don't know I'll need 2nd opinions there.
Edit 2: Finished fluff, added Psionic and Shadowcasting variants (replacing one of Arcane or Divine magic, theoretically compatible), and added an arcane only variant for worlds where divine magic is more closely tied to the gods. Feels a little slim for a class, might should add feats, racial substitution levels, or something, but not sure what. Ready for PEACH exchange if requested.Last edited by Zaydos; 2014-11-19 at 04:30 PM.

Well if you want it.
Encounters don't have CR they have EL which is based on the individual CRs of the creatures which comprise them.
Also NPC wealth by level tables are used for NPCs even if they have PC class levels. I am not 100% sure how much wealth a > 1st level character with only NPC classes are supposed to have since to my knowledge there isn't a table for that (the closest would be the encounter rewards tables for their CR or use level -1 NPC table since it's the same CR).Peanut Half-Dragon Necromancer by Kurien.

Cool, thanks.
I would find something from yours to complain about, but really my main complaint is "It's really confusing" and not much else.
