Default The Sands of the Pharaohs

Okay to all those who made it past the cut welcome to the game, and I hope that we all enjoy it. But first I want to add a few things to help everyone remember them so if there are any questions they can be answered prety quickly by simply looking at the first post.

    Spoiler: Heat Stroke
    Show
At these low levels I will only be having the temperature go from Hot during the morning's and into the afternoon, while at night it will be in the Moderate range, this is while you are still early on mind you.

Hot : In this temperature band, unprotected characters must make successful Fortitude saving throws each hour (DC 15 + 1 for each previous check) or take 1d4 non lethal damage. Characters wearing heavy clothing or any kind of armor take -4 penalty on their saves. Characters whose protection against heat is at least level 1 ( such as the heat endurance feat or carrying a parasol) are safe at this temperature and do not need to make a save.

Now ways to counter this are pretty simple, and there are a good deal of ways.

The heat endurance feat is the simplest course of action
The endure elements spell (Lasts 24 hours and grants level 3 protection)
Armor bright (introduced in sandstorm gives you Level 1 protection
Desert outfit (One of the free outfits you can own) grants level 1 protection
Keepcool slave Grants level 1 protection

With the desert outfit its protection is neutralized if wearing armor so it would be good for the mages mainly.
Armor bright grants a +2 fortitude bonus against heat ( like the heat metal spell) and grants level 1 protection. It costs 50gp, and lasts 24 hours each time.
Keepcool Grants a +1 circumstance bonus on fortitude saves to resist damage from hot environments and also costs 50gp and lasts 24 hours.

Now you could have both keepcool and armor bright to have level 2 protection and a +3 bonus on fortitude saves.

If you suffer the effects of heatstroke you are fatigued until you become cooled off, no form of healing works until you do so (except for the heal spell). You can cool of by reaching shade, surviving until nightfall, getting doused in water, or being targeted by the endure elements spell. After this is done, normal healing applies for nonlethal damage. And once the nonlethal damage is gone you are no longer fatigued.

    Spoiler: Dehydration
    Show
To avoid dehydration you must consume 2 gallons of water a day, and while seeing you role play this from time to time may prove intresting it is not needed. So long as you tell me how much water you bring with you, I will be able to calculate the rest. Now with someone who is good with maps, having a guide give you the shortest path and such, it will make it pretty simple to do the math. But what happens if in a battle some of the water is lost, well then we have a cleric with create water, and the survival skill. This is merely here to show you the dangers if you neglect to take this into account though.

Any creature can go without water for 12hours + their con modifier before suffering the effects of dehydration (some races have a longer time. I am only using the base). After this time, the creature must make a Con check each hour (DC 10+1 for each previous check) or take 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. A dehydrated character is considered fatigued until they are treated, not even magical healing will work.

    Treating dehydration
Long term care (DC 15 heal check)
Requires 24 hours, and 4 gallons of water a day
Increase the check by +5 and double the time if they have taken lethal damage from dehydration.

A heal spell, or hydrate spell can accomplish this form of healing as well.

    Spoiler: Duststorm
    Show
-4 on ranged attacks, -4 Listen checks, -2 spot and search checks, Tiny creatures are blown away unless they pass a fort DC 15, small are knocked down, and medium are checked.

    Spoiler: Sand movement
    Show
Shallow sand (Unless I say otherwise this will be the main) : Costs 2 squares of movement and tumble checks DC increase by 2.

Deep sand : Medium or large creatures move threw it at the costs of three squares per move, small require 4. Tumbling is impossible in deep sand.

    Spoiler: Glare
    Show

Ever looked at the sun to long, same thing applies. Unless you have some form of protection for your eyes, (Veils, dark lenses) you are dazzled. Dazzled creatures take a -1 penalty to attack rolls, search checks, and spot checks. This penalty is doubled for creatures with light sensitivity. Glare induced blindness lasts 1d4 hours after you get out of the sun, or 1 hour if you go into an enclosed area.

So just cover your eyes with something and you will be fine and this wont apply. Those that get a desert outfit consider the turban to have a veil to go over your eyes. Everyone else, you will have to buy a veil, or at later levels have masterwork armor made perhaps that has dark lenses built into the helm?

    Spoiler: Sunburn
    Show
If your character has darker pigment they take a longer time to burn, hey I am getting this straight from the book don't be mad at me. Keep all your skin covered and this is not a problem don't and this is what happens.

After 3 hours you take 1 point of nonlethal damage
After an additional 3 hours you develop sever sunburn and immediately take 2d6 points of nonlethal damage and take a -2 penalty on fortitude saves to resist heat dangers. Those with darker pigment can go 6 hours before becoming sunburned, and 12 hours before sever sunburn.

    Spoiler: Mirages
    Show
A Will DC 12 disbelieves them, gain a +4 like an illusion if you think it is a mirage.

    Spoiler: Getting lost
    Show
Yes this will happen, especially in a sandstorm at least once so I am placing the rules here to make it easy.

Survival DC 12 will normally tell you where you need to go however in certain conditions modifiers may apply

Duststorm adds a +4 to this DC
    Map -4 to this DC
Heat shimmer +2 to this DC
    Glare +2 to this DC
    Mirage +4 to this DC

    Spoiler: Allowed Books
    Show

    Player's Handbook
    Dungeon Master's guide
    Monster Manuel
    Sandstorm

Spoiler: Allowed PrC's out of source
    Show

    Dungeon Delver
    Virtuoso
    Elemental Savant
    Divine Crusader
    Radiant Servant of Pelor
    Master specialist
    Cloaked Dancer
Kensai (Must serve Pharaoh or other important figure have not decided which yet as stated ealier still on early development of this)
    Dervish
Combat medic (Because those who have the courage to play a healer deserve it)

And here is the map that we have at the moment, as I edit it to add new areas you have been to and seen it will change over time to reflect them.

Lets see, yes it seems I'll get more water. I can stand hazard pay I suppose, and desert outfit means they won't drop dead in an instant. Out of curiosity are you counting on the mules drinking anything?

    Hogglemop Poggletop

    Spoiler
    Show

The Poggleflicks were of a refined and pure bloodline. That was to say that when a great lord had captured a dragon and dared any brave enough to ride it, one of the Poggleflicks had mistaken his meaning and draconic blood had mingled into the bloodline giving them something to brag about to the neighbors for hundreds of years, long past the point that everyone was sick of hearing about their draconic blood, but with it had come power over the elements. Ernest Poggleflicks was perhaps the greatest sorcerer to have come of that line, capable of making massive balls of flame explode in the sky, they even exploded where he wanted them to! Ever the refined mage he wore a deep blue robe, and maintained a comfortable lifestyle for himself and his family by hiring his services out to the local lords, and that's how he died, caught in between a raging giant and a shield wall. The problem was the giant breathed fire out, and seemed to suck the fireballs he tossed at it in as if they were but warm air.
    Spoiler
    Show

With Earnest Poggleflicks dead, it finally came to be that Mrs. Poggleflicks (Maria), a beautiful young witch of 96, began to see some swelling in her stomach, a young babe. A babe that kept her wrenching into her cauldron at all hours of the day, a child that wouldn't let her delicious homemade maggots paste and spider legs jam on toad skin stay down. Oh how that made her simmer, not only had she lost her husband, but now her odds of finding a better one were down the drain.

    Spoiler
    Show

Worst of it all the child's grandfather demanded to live with her to help raise the boy as a proper Poggleflicks. "Grandfather Flick" as the beautiful Mrs. Poggleflicks would call him, would never give the family legacy a rest. Worst off all the man had a single unruly splotch of green scales under his left eye. While Maria insisted time and again to the old man that his mother must have drunken some kind of spoiled potion with her cauldron's brew, Grandfather Flick would assert that it was indeed a manifestation and proof of his noble ancestry. Why Maria couldn't begin to count the times the old man had threatened to breath fire and then panted until he turned purple, or tried to fly, only ever falling far enough to complain about his injuries for months to come.

    Spoiler
    Show

Then the babe was finally born. FINALLY! Almost the next instant Maria asked grandfather flick to leave... then told him... then threatened his life if he didn't. Enraged by the fool well past the breaking point Maria screamed, the kind of scream that only someone distressed and struggling with their sanity can unleash. "Fine! Stay with your child, and may he be Hogglemop Poggletop, a mockery to all of your line that you're so proud of. Let him be the bane of all your legends and the end of your so sacred line!" as she spoke the words of power took hold, rooting to the child, for the curse of a witch is no small force to be trifled with. in all the heated arguments that followed, not once did anyone look up to the stars, for had they they would have seen that forces of fate had much larger plans for the child then that. Hogglemop Poggletop was born under the aligning of the eight sacred stars which symbolized, above all else, magic.

"Hogglemop Poggletop, did you hear me, I said to fetch the shattered shells of crab, quickly now before it's too late!"
    "-but gramp-Flick said..."
"I don't give a unicorn's hoof what that dusty old fleabag said, bring the shells!"
Running along the floor a young Hogglemop Poggletop bounded before his legs caught on something sending his face hurtling straight into the eyeball jar, and with an audible shattering and squelching sound a whole jar of perfectly good eyeballs were lost covering young Hogglemop's face with eyeball mush. dizzily he tried to stand up, but fell again. After two more attempts he was up again, managed to grab the shells and was hurtling towards his mother's culdron when suddenly his mother appeared in the doorway before him. bumping into her he bounces back landing flat on his bum, and sending shattered shells of crab all across the house.
This Hogglemop Poggletop, this is why you are a failure and always will be a failure in life and even in death! Clean those shells up, wash your face, and go gather more eyeballs! How am I supposed to divine anything without eyeballs!?" It was not easy finding eyeballs in the sea of dust.

    Spoiler
    Show

In such a manner it was that the story of young Poggletop's life played out. In time, when he turned twenty five he obtained a familiar, a lizard that squirted blood from its eyes. That always cheered him up. Nothing like a glorified frog shooting blood from it's eyes to warm a young man's heart. As a familiar the creature survived abnormally long, living with him through his adulthood, and even now with his grey beard, and over time the two of them grew closer.

    Spoiler
    Show

hogglemop Poggletop was returning from the desert where he'd been hunting with Bennet for Bennet's lizard food when he smelled something odd... smoke. Now, it's important to remember, wood is a rare commodity in the sea of dust, certainly not something that just anyone would burn, but there it was, right in front of his house, a chard wooden stake with a scorched corpse hanging on it. Now it's long been said that fire is a purifying force, and that it consumes even magic, and while the villagers had scoured their homes for wood to burn her out of superstition one thing was sure, Maria's curse was fading. No longer was Hogglemop Poggletop bound to be a failure, from this point on he would be a failure by his own making or not at all. Solemnly he dug a hole in the sand for his mother. It wouldn't do much, the wind blew the sand as quickly as he could shovel it, but he buried her all the same. That day he left town. He wasn't sure if his mother had finally pushed someone too far, or if it was just hatred of witches, but he didn't want to find out what they'd do to a witch's son...

There it was, in the next town that he heard of a group of adventurers seeking "a mage to light their way". hastily he bought a number of torches at the store. He was growing more and more confident by the day, and for the first time in his life he could do magic! not like his father, but at least so much as his grandfather, that made him an expert mage, a genius, a master. Hurriedly he found some apprentices to remind him how amazing his magic was, and to school in the ways of sorcery. "It's like this and that... no you had it right, I swear you did, but i don't see any light so you must have done it wrong. Keep trying until morning." Alas, little did young Hogglemop know, sorcery was a natural gift and could not be taught...

Thus it was that Hogglemop approached the tavern, aromas of choice cut snake fat and fried lizard eggs reached him managing to make him, if anything, more nervous about the encounter. taking a deep breath he walked through the Inn, ignoring it's wonderful and vaguely nostalgic smells.

"Hogglemop Poggletop at your service." The mage greeted them with a flourishing bow. While he certainly looked like a mage, he didn't look all too impressive. A pointed hat covered the top of his head, and a ragged untamed beard the lower half, with singe marks all about him. He wore not a flowing robe of stars and moons, but a simple brown robe with holes scorched into it, and all manner of powders and fungi accumulating upon it. "I heard you were heading off to that... uh... sandy place, you know with the heat, the sand, the scorching, and the burning. I'm good at that you know, so don't you worry about a th... ah... ah... CHOO!" A small cloud of glittering blue dust flew from the mound-of-beard that was the mage's face, sticking fast to those before him like slime. Ectoplasm? But it was blue... Mages, a breed all their own, each with their own ideas, and each with their own oddities. would he be forgetful, clumsy, perhaps his bones would rattle, but one thing was sure, if it was a mage, especially a mage that claimed skill with fire, there would be serious power in those bones, and serious hell to pay if that spell didn't turn out alright...

Drack spot and listen are untrained skills if you don't have points in them you know? I will roll for the commoners so you don't know their sheets. All you need to know is between the 5 of them they bought 50 clay jugs, spears, slings, 3 donkeys, backpacks, saddlepacks (each donkey is at their max of carry) shovels. And that once you have told them how many days of food they will need they will buy that.

Well Drack if it makes you feel any better I roll well so your hirlings, even though they are untrained, are pretty durable. Can't dish a lot of damage, nor take many hits, but they can be a pretty good distraction and have a few useful talents. Keep ion mind with hirlings with the more danger added the more chance of them to become unfriendly, they start at neutral though.

Once something is rolled that is the number, Also I would consider that more of a craft then Profession, though will let it slide. Keep in mind however that making such a check means you are spending either 8 hours a day for a week on it, or you are spending 8 hours in one day working on it. Same rules apply as with craft.

1 Week = check result in gp for the week
1 day = check results in sp for the day

If you want I can work it into a system for hours however, the minimum will be 1 hour though and it will be in cp.

No matter what you were making though you failed, however I need to know exactly what you were making as if you read the rules you may have just lost half the materials. From now on you need to tell me what you are trying to make, this way I have an idea to set the base at. Other DMs may run it different, but not me. If you leave something vague and open to interpretation like that I will become asmundous and make it so no matter what you do you lose. Give me something to work with, and I can be your best friend.

It was more to signify the culmination of his work during the journey he had made, and less threats would be appreciated. Honestly, I don't really care what happens to this stupid carving, I just wanted him to have something to do.

I didn't say they could do magic yet nor that they would learn any wizardry from a sorcerer.

Gah, you know, I think my original avatar and emoticon spamming suits me best. Let the good times roll.

Dude, I don't even know. Might've been a combination between the ****ty DMs I've had in the past that got real upset with me when i'd try to do something clever, and all the **** that I'm going through right now. Just ignore the bits where I get testy, yeah?

So glad I'm no the only one XD

Also, I just thought of a great way yo fail my Profession check.

Oh, and I looked it up: Creating an object can either be an applicable Craft or applicable Profession roll, just like creating a MAgical Object can either be a Craft or a SPellcraft

    Wait, what?

Anywho making items is craft, fluffing fulfilling some job that can be making or not but ends up giving you gold is profession.

Question: Do you prefer rolls IC or in the OOC. Different DM's prefer different things. I rolled in OOC because of habit. And I can fix that. But I'm just wondering.

Well, I've looked into it, and it never specifies what rolls you make for Magic Items. Strange, since PF has this in a tidy one line of text and says that all three can be used, where appropriate.

So what in the hell DOES Spellcraft do in 3.5, if you can't use it for that now?
